L. S. HELPHREY DIES HERE TODAY
L. S. Helphrey, 75, Jasper county farmer, died this
afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at his home southwest of Newton
following a five day illness of pneumonia and heart
trouble.
Besides his widow, he is survived by two sons, Percy of
West Concord, Minn. and E. M. Helphrey of Newton and a
daughter Mrs. Allen Moore of Newton. ~ The Newton Daily

Helphrey Rites To Be Held in Newton Saturday
Funeral services for L. S. Helphrey, 75, Jasper county
farmer who died Thursday afternoon, will be conducted
Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the First Methodist
Episcopal church in Newton by Dr. L. B. Logan. Interment
will be in the Sugar Grove Cemetery.
Members of the Palo Alto Grange, of which Mr. Helphrey
was a member, will attend the services in a body and will
meet at 2:00 o'clock at the Murdoch Funeral home.
Mr. Helphrey is survived by his widow; two sons, Percy of
West Concord, Minn., and E. M. of Newton, and a daughter,
Mrs. Allen Moore of Newton. ~The Newton Daily News, April

HOLD HELPHREY RITES SATURDAY
Palo Alto Grange Members Conduct
Graveside Rites at Sugar Grove Cemetery
Funeral rites for L. S. Helphrey, 75, were conducted
Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the First Methodist
Episcopal church by the pastor, Dr. L. B. Logan.
Music for the service was furnished by a quartet composed
of Mrs. William Ainsworth, Mrs. James Dodge, Mrs. Ray
Whittaker, and Mrs. E. C. Hoffman with Mrs. George Walker as
accompanist. They sang "Jesus Savior Pilot Me" and "Down the River of Time."
Interment was in the Sugar Grove cemetery, with members
of the Palo Alto Grange in charge of the graveside rites.
State Master Ralph Smith, member of Sugar Grove Grange,
acted as chaplain for these services. Those serving as
pallbearers were Harold Marshall, Vernon Brock of Prairie
City, William Marshall, Charles Hickman, William Aillaud of
Laurel, and Harold Aillaud of Des Moines.
From Out of Town
Among those attending the services from out-of-town were
Mr. and Mrs. P. R. Helphrey of West Concord, Minn., Mr. and
Mrs. C. C. Coker of Nevada, Mr. and Mrs. Will Wasson of
Brooklyn, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Apgar of Centerville, Dr. and
Mrs. H. C. Aillaud of Des Moines, and Mr. and Mrs. Steve
Darling of Pleasantville.
Lewis S. Helphrey, son of Lewis and Maria Helphrey, was
born in Palo Alto Township, 4 1/2 miles southwest of Newton,
March 24, 1858, and died April 13, 1933, at the age of 75
years and 29 days, on the farm where he was born and resided
all his life.
He was united in marriage to Miss Tilsie Marshall, April
28, 1881, to which union were born three children, two sons
and one daughter.
Mr. Helphrey was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Miss
Ellen Helphrey and Mrs.
W. J. Ramsay, one brother, J.
B. Helphrey and one grand-daughter, Mrs. J. Harold
Russell.
Surviving Relatives
He is survived by his widow; two sons, Percy of West
Concord, Minn., and E. M. of Newton, and a daughter, Mrs. W.
A. Moore of Newton; two sisters, Mrs.
C. W. Aillaud of Newton, and Mrs.
C. G. Houck of Couer d' Alene, Idaho and one brother, W.
D. Helphrey, also of Couer d' Alene, Idaho and five
grand-children, William and LeRoy Helphrey and Francis,
Mozelle and Darlene Moore.
Mr. Helphrey was a member of Palo Alto Grange, having
filled the most important offices in the Order. He was
greatly interested in the activities of the Grange, both
county, state and national, was serving at the time of his
death on the legislative committee. ~ The Newton Daily News,

Woman Dies at 77 Years
Mrs. Lewis S. Helphrey, 77, died at the home of her
daughter, Mrs. Allen Moore, Saturday where she had been ill
since suffering a stroke and heart attack on Thursday
morning.
Funeral services will be conducted at the First
Presbyterian church Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock with the
Rev. George Def. Fisher in Charge. Interment will be in the
Sugar Grove cemetery.
Tilsie Ann Marshall, daughter of Emery and Mary Marshall,
was born Dec. 24, 1861 at New Lexington, Perry county, Ohio.
She was born and lived in a log cabin there and came to
Jasper county in 1875. She was united in marriage to Lewis
S. Helphrey on April 28, 1881 and moved on a farm 4 1/2
miles southwest of Newton. They resided there for 52 years
until Mr. Helphrey's death in 1933. A son, Earl M., also
died in 1933.
She is survived by a son, Percy Ray and a daughter, Mrs.
Allen Moore, both of Newton, two sisters, Mrs. George Brock
of Prairie City and Mrs. Sarah Hickman of Newton and two
brothers, S. S. Marshall and C. O. Marshall, both of Newton.
She is also survived by five grandchildren and one great
grandchild.
A member of the Palo Alto grange and Three Quarter
Century club of The Newton Daily News and Jasper County
Record, she also attended the Presbyterian church. ~ Newton
