(A) Harlan, Battery B, 19th Field Artillery. On November 1, during a local attack on the 56th Infantry, Corporal Harlan passed through an enemy barrage to notify the Artillery of the Infantry change of position, thus saving the Infantry from friendly Artillery fire which had already been called for. On the same day he repeatedly volunteered and carried important messages through heavy shell and machine-gun fire. He at all times showed great gallantry and devotion to duty and by his conduct set an example of bravery for his comrades, .....By command of Brigadier General Rivers: George L.
