It is with a happy degree of pleasure that we incorporate pleasant biographical mention and pay -natinted tribute to Capt. J. M. BEATTY as a veteran, broad-minded good citizen, and time-honored standing and practice before the Lee county bar.

Capt. BEATTY was born in Franklin county, Mo, Aug. 27, 1836, but reared in Fayette county, Ky.  In 1841 [sic] he largely interested himself in the coal and timber lands of this section, and from him Beattyville derived its name.  When the civil war came on he enlisted n the Federal Army - Co A, 7th Ky, Inf, ___ of fire, took part in many important engagements, and in 1864 was successively promoted to First Lieutenant and Captain of his Company for gallant services on the field of battle.  GRANT and LEE having signed peace documents and the war clouds having cleared away, he returned home, took up the study of law and was admitted to the bar at Booneville in 1868.  He took a prominent part in the formation of Lee county in 1878 [sic] (actually formed in 1870) and became its first county attorney, which office he held for two terms.  A life-long Republican from love of principle, he has, thoughout his long and very active life, ever been a potent influence in its higher councils.

Aside from his law practice Capt. BEATTY carries on an extensive real estate business, and as a dealer in mineral, timber and farm lands, is yet doing much to develp this section.  He especially has a choice number of fine tracts of fine coal fields, a part of which he is anticipates developing in the future.  He is also Treasurer, a heavy stockholder and one of the chief promoters of the Lee County Oil and Gas Co, of which his bosom friend, the late Maj. L.C. NORMAN, was President.  Capt. BEATTY is a man of __ family, influential member of the Episcopal church.
