The Courier-Journal, Louisville, Kentucky Sunday, 27 July 1930 Lee County Officer Says He Fired After Man Drew Pistol Beattyville, Ky., July 26 While making a liquor raid this afternoon Deputy Sheriff Grant Ross, of Idamay, Lee County, shot and killed Joe Sizemore, about 40 years old, near Idamay. Ross surrendered to County Judge G. W. Pendergrass, who told him to return to his home, and that he would be summoned if further investigatioin is made of the shooting. According to Charles Blount,
chief of police of Beattyville, Ross went to arrest Sizemore, a bootlegger
suspect, without a warrant. Ross reported that he found Sizemore
distributing liquor. The deputy ordered him to surrender, he said,
but Sizemore drew his pistol, and Ross fired, killing Sizemore.
