J.C. Smallwood Celebrates 85th Birth Anniversary
Congleton, April 20 -
The Rev. J.C. SMALLWOOD celebrated his 85th birthday at his home here yesterday. There were 41 friends and relatives present when the ________ (page blurred) had come 150 miles to be present for the celebration. Mr. SMALLWOOD is the only man in the county who born arms in both the Civil War and the Spanish American War and is probably the oldest veteran who was a private in the war with Spain. There were a few soldiers in the Union armies younger than Mr. SMALLWOOD, but they were "drummer" -or "fifer-boys," he said, when he told his friends that he was the oldest soldier in one war and the youngest in another, basing his claims as a private under full arms. There were three Spanish War comrads present at the dinner, but he knows of no living member of the Civil War company to which he belonged. Owsley County Courier, Friday, 4 May 1934 |
