The body of William Jewell, Proctor miner, was found floating amoung some willows in the main stream of the Kentucky river Saturday afternoon.  Jewell had been missing since the previous Sunday when he was last seen in South Fork and was presumed to be drowned.

During several days after it was found that Jewell was missing the South Fork had been dragged and on Thursday Sheriff Hampton Palmer had "shot" several sticks of dynamite in the vicinity of Jewell's disappearance.  These shots many have brought the remains to the surface earlier than natural causes would have, is the Sheriff's belief.

Coroner Johnie Lyons jury returned a verdict of accidental drowning.  The body was taken to the King Justice Funeral Home and services were held Sunday morning at the grave in Proctor cemetery with Rev. R. D. Baker, pastor of the Beattyville Baptist church, officiating.

Beattyville, May 2 - Roy Johnson, 18 years old, son of Cliff Johnson, was picked up beside the railroad track near Whiteash about 6:30 o'clock this morning.

The unconscious boy was brought home where physicians found the skull had a serious fracture and chances for recovery seemed slim.  However, when a portion of shattered bone had been removed his condition seemed to improve.

Engineer Burns saw the boy beside the track with two men whom he called "suspicious looking characters."  He stopped his train here and informed Sheriff Chas. Blount.  But when the officer go to the scene the two men had disappeared.

He is still unconscious and his condition is very serious.

Finley JUDD

The Beattyville Enterprise (Beattyville, KY)
Thursday, 30 August 1951

Finley Judd, 43, a former railroad section laborer, was accidently burned to death Saturday at his home near Scoville in Owsley county.

Details surrounding Judd's death are obscure but it was learned that it came through the agency of a kerosene lamp.  Owsley County officers investigating the accident were quoted as saying that Judd was at home alone at the time and appeared to have been sitting at a table with a kerosene lamp in front of him.  The conjecture is that he fell asleep and somehow pulled the lamp into his lap thereby catching his clothes on fire.

King Justice of the Pennington Funeral Home stated that all Judd's clothes except his belt and shoes had been burned off his body.

Funeral services were held for Judd Monday at the Salt Lick church by the Rev. Kostinen.  Burial was in the Isaacs cemetery with the Pennington funeral home in charge.

Judd is survived by his wife, the former Miss Tim Stacy, nine children and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Willie Judd of Scoville.
