Rev. Marion L. Putnam (10/28/98)
I have not visited in Scott County since 1944 in Jan. I was on my way to pick up a ship. A relative was kind enough to take me to my grandmothers. Ruth Ellen PUTNAM. She died (I think) while I was in France or In a Navy hospital in England. Grandmother was sick in bed. I do not think she ever got up again. Could some kind soul find an obit for her or information on where she is buried? This disabled vet would be very appreciative. Her and Lillian PUTNAM (long time school teacher in Sikeston) ran a boarding house there when I was a small boy. When I was there in 1944 (or the latter part of 43) A daughter Grace was with them. I do not know what Grace's married name was. An obit would possibly give me that. Thanking you in advance for any help. Rev. Marion L. Putnam, 3600 Martinwood Ct., Tallahassee, FL 32308, Chick_putnam@msn.com

I am researching the surname of GAGE. My great-great grandparents are John Jefferson GAGE and Tbitha Ann Metcalf GAGE. John Jefferson GAGE was born in 1849 in TN and died July 24, 1924 in Scott County. He is buried in Blodgett Cemetery in Scott County. Tabitha Ann (Metcalf) GAGE was born in IL in 1856 and died December 13, 1913 in Soctt County. She is also buried in Blodgett Cemetery in Scott County. They had at least two children who were married in Scott County as well:
Susan L. Gage married William G. Mackley on September 9, 1909 in Scott County.
Cassie Gage married Callie Collins in Scott County, MO (year unknown)
John Jefferson Gage also married Ethel Ownesby, presumably in Scott County. They were married September 22, 1914. They had at least two daughters, Velma, b. 1915, and Helen, b. 1920. John was 65 when he married Ethel, and from what I understand, she may have been as young as 15 or as old as 23 when they were married. I am looking for information about John and Tabitha's known children: Ada, Harriett, Susan, Lester, Charles, John, and Cassie. I am also looking for any information about Ethel Ownesby. I am researching my Grandmother. Her maiden name was Mary Anna MURPHY. She married first time to William NATION, the second time she married Walter WISE (my Grandfather). She died in 1941 and was buried in Benton MO. I don't know how old she was for I do not know her date of birth. One story is that she and her brother were survivors of US army massacre of Cherokees and her and her brother were found by an Irish family named Murphy and raised as their own. The other story is that she and Zerelda Cole (mother of Frank and Jesse James) were first cousins. My Grandmother was suppose to be first cousins with Nellie Bryant (later Nellie Aberthnathy) who lived in Oran MO. I don't know much of anything else of her past. Would like to know D.O.B, where she died and is buried. She is my families Mystery. Thank you.

I am still looking for burial sites for my Great grandfather Madison WILLIAMS and great grandmother Amanda Cox HOBBS WILLIAMS. In the 1850 Census Madison WILLIAMS was a Commerce tailor from Virginia. Amanda Cox was married to Nicholas M HOBBS (a lawyer), she had two children by Nicholas; Phebe and William. Also living with her in Commerce was an older Phebe COX (her mother?). A small girl named Maria Randle also lived with them. She was from Bullitt county KY, and I believe she came here with the Moores. In the 1860 Census, Amanda was married to Madison WILLIAMS (what happened to Nicholas HOBBS?), & they had the two Hobbs children plus Madison Pulaski WILLIAMS (my grandfather). Since we are decendents of Charles Moore (kin), it is possible that they are burried in the Old Commerce Cemetary at the top of the hill. (We looked, but were not sucessful because of the undergrowth. We were alse told that Madison taught the fiddle, and had a small farm with an orchard along the river. We would appreciate any help you could give us (Don Williams, Arlie Smith, & Lois LeDure). Thanks
