AARON, HISS, LONG, SUMMERLIN posted by Nancy Hiss Holsinger on Monday, May 7, 2001

My father, Francis Michaux Hiss, a World War I veteran, died in April 1938 after a long bout with tuberculosis. I never got to know him well but I have been searching for information about his life ever since. Recently I've run across a number of documents that suggest that he may have been born in Wayne County in Mount Olive on 12 December 1895. Since there seems no reason to believe such a statement, I was prone to ignore it; now, however, it appears that this may be true after all. He was the nephew of Flora Long (Mrs. Claude)Summerlin of Mount Olive and also related--I'm still not sure how--to Nicholas Long and his wife, Martha E. Aaron, all also from Mount Olive. Two queries: I know that North Carolina did not start official birth registration until the early years of the 20th century but are there other sources which could be checked in looking for a record of Frank's birth? He and his widowed mother lived in Mount Olive until 1911 (with the exception of several months spent in Virginia at the time of the 1900 census). They subsequently left North Carolina for Richmond, Virginia late in 1911. Since I am now living in central Illinois and can't just pop in to the county at will, any help that anyone can suggest would be very deeply appreciated. Many thanks, Nancy H. Holsinger

My ggg grandfather Wiley PEACOCK (son of Jesse, son of John and Patience) (b abt 1796) was married to Lefa, and they had 10 children. Is there any way to track down Lefa's maiden name and ancestry? I assume marriage was in Wayne Co., but chance it was in Johnston. Would there be any marriage records? Also, his father Jesse (b abt 1747) was married to Elizabeth, and I'm also interested in her maiden name/ancestry, although I'm quite sure that would more likely be Johnston Co.

I am looking for a death certificate for a "Henry Myers" or "Jim Henry or James Henry Myers"maybe spelled Meyers. He is buried in the Smith Cemetery off Ebenezer Church Road just off Hwy. 70 east. He has a Union soldier head marker but no date of death or birth is given. Head marker reads Henry Myers Company A 2nd Maryland Inf. Date of death could have been between the years of 1914 to 1935 at the very latest. Please help this has been an ongoing mystery now for over 6 months. Why and how did a Union soldier get buried in a family cemetery with a confederate soldier "Isaac Seth Smith". I've got to believe that there has to be some kind of paper trail in Goldsboro for this man. He may have lived with the "Kirby Smith" family whose house is only 1/4 mile from the burial site. I'd like to have this family cemetery listed for the web page of Wayne County. There are over 30 people believed to be buried in this now restored family cemetery.
