NEBRASKA CENSUS, 1854, FIRST DISTRICT
Abstract by Raymond E. Dale, Lincoln, Nebraska.

This area, called Richardson County in the published returns, included the present counties of Richardson and Pawnee, with parts of Nemaha, Johnson and Gage. There were no counties at the time this enumeration was taken. The first counties, set up for election purposes, were designated in a proclamation by Governor Thomas B. Cuming, November 23, 1854. The enumerator, J. L. Sharp(a) gives his district, "from the Missouri Rivr West about one hundred miles & embracing also the half breed Tract." In another place he mentions the 40th Parallel of Latitude as one of the boundaries. Some Kansas settlers were counted in this district, especially in the "Belew" settlement, as the boundary between Nebraska and Kansas had not been surveyed. "Belew's" was later called Bobst's settlement, Pleasant Valley and Cincinnati. It was near the present village of Dubois. A check of this record with later records and biographies shows a great many errors as to the Christian name and the birthplace. The enumeration was signed under oath, November 20, 1854, by

   (a) Joseph L. Sharp, son of James and Polly (Baldwin) Sharp, was born in Tennessee, November 26, 1804, and married, January 26, 1826, Matilda Singleton. He was elected to the first territorial council from Richardson County, although a resi. dent of Iowa and he was president of the council. If he ever lived in Nebraska it was for a very short time. - Morton-Watkins, History of Nebraska, I, pp. 195-6.
