TABLE OF CONTENTS
SOME DESCENDANTS OF
THOMAS1 ORTON
OF FARMINGTON,
CONNECTICUT(a)
1. THOMAS1
ORTON was born about 1614,(b)
probably in England, but when he came to America is not known. In
the early records this surname is sometimes confused with Horton
and it is possible that originally they were the same. By November
1643 Thomas Orton was living in Connecticut at which time he
served on the jury at Hartford. According to the town records of
Windsor, Connecticut, kept by Mathew Grant, he married Margaret
Pall, June 1641.(c) The same authority says that he had
four children born at Windsor and that two young children died
there about 1649. As the four children born at Windsor are
recorded as born between February 1647 and October 1654, it would
seem that he came to Windsor in 1646 or 1647. He removed to
Farmington in 1655 or 1656, and was deputy to the General Court
for Farmington, October 9, 1684.(d) Between
(a) This genealogy was compiled
by the Editor from notes supplied several years ago by Mr.
Homer W. Brainard, then of Hartford, Conn. In view of the
disagreement in the published versions of this Orton line, Mr. E.
Stanley Welles, Newington, Conn., has kindly checked the disputed
points, supplying the documentary evidence, much of it from
unpublished records. This family line is contributed by Mrs. Lila
Woodruff, Lincoln, Nebr., and is published as a memorial to Eugene
B. Woodruff (1850-1924), late husband of Mrs. Woodruff.
(b) The order passed by the Court, Sept. 3,
1674, reads: "Thomas Orton Sen r is by this Court freed from
training and warding, he being sixty years of age."
(c) Some Early Records and Documents
of and Relating to the Town of Windsor, Connecticut,
1639-1703, pp. 53, 81, 91. Some other genealogies give her
name as Mary Pratt. Mr. Welles finds that the manuscript copy at
the Connecticut Historical Society states definitely "Margaret
Pall." Efforts to place her in Pall, Paul, or Pell families have
been unsuccessful. As only four of their seven children were born
at Windsor, it seems certain that they were married a few years
before coming to Windsor. It is not uncommon to find the marriage
and earlier births recorded with the births that actually occurred
in the town.

11. JOHN2
ORTON (Thomas'1)
was born at Windsor, Connecticut, February 17, 1647/8, and removed
to Farmington with his father's family where he lived the
remainder of his life. He married three times, the name of his
first wife being unknown. He married, secondly, Hannah Orvis, who
left no surviving children.(f) His third wife was Mary
Tudor, born March 6, 1660/1, daughter of Owen and Mary. (Loomis)
Tudor. In November 1691, John Orton and John Lee took the
inventory of the estate of Mathew Woodruff,(g) and on
May 16, 1692, with Samuel Newell, he took the inventory of the
estate of Matthew's brother, John Woodruff.
(h) The latter in his will called John Orton his
cousin, but the exact relationship is not known. He died in
January, 1695/6, and his noncupative will was allowed by the
court, April 8. The inventory of his estate was £486 and he
left to his widow Mary all that she brought from her father
Tudor's estate and all she would have from his own estate, which
was to be at her disposal. A distribution of the estate was made,
June 13, 1696, but as the daughter Mary died before she came of
age, the part allotted to her was distributed to the other heirs
June 5, 1710.(i) The widow Mary married, secondly, July
5, 1699, John3 Judson (Joseph2
William1), of Woodbury, Connecticut, as his third wife,
to whom - she bore four children. The marriage
(e) Yearbook, Daughters of
Founders and Patriots of America, Vol. IV, p. 156. The
Dewey Genealogy also says that Jedediah Dewey was her husband.
(f) Edward Orton, Columbus, 0., Writing to the
late Julius Gay, says: "Hannah Orvis was evidently the second wife
of John Orton. I had suspected this for some time, but found
satisfactory confirmation of the fact in the town records. By his
first wife I judge that he was connected with the Hawley family."
That Hannah Orvis left no heirs is shown by an abstract of the
will of her mother, Elizabeth Bronson, dated Farmington, Apr. 5.
1694. She was the widow, Elizabeth Carpenter, when she
married George Orvis, and after his death, she married as her
third husband, Richard Bronson. Abstract of Will. - Loving son,
Samuel Orvis; daughter Mare the wife of Samuel Scott; loving son
David Carpenter and his daughters Mary and Elizabeth; daughter
Mare Hinman; daughter Elizabeth Lee; grandchild Mary wife of
Thomas Barnes; grandchild Experience Chapel; to Martha Orvis; to
Deborah Orvis and grandchild Samll Orvis; grandcbild Martha Scott
and grandchild Hanah Hough; to Mare Scott; Elizabeth Hill; and to

III. SAMUELS
ORTON3 (John 2
Thomas1) was born at Farmington,
Connecticut, November 1694, and went with his mother to Woodbury
in 1699 when she became the wife of John Judson. He was still
living at Woodbury in 1718. In 1720 Samuel Orton removed to
Litchfield where he was an original proprietor and one of the
earliest settlers. On October 261 1723) he married Abigail
Smedley, probably the daughter of Samuel Smedley of Fairfield,
whose sons Samuel and Ephraim afterwards settled in Litchfield.
They lived at Orton Hill, southeast of Bantam Lake, a locality now
in the town of Morris. He and Samuel Smedley were among those
ordered to build and garrison a fort in the southern part of the
town against Indian attacks. Samuel Orton died in 1774.

at Litchfield, Ruth, daughter of Joseph and Mary Mason, who had

but the date can no longer be read. The births of all the children
except the youngest were recorded at Litchfield.(m)
During the Revolution his sons Gideon and Samuel served in the
Continental Army. Samuel Orton was a. physician(n) and
was sometimes called upon to administer to the soldiers. In 1777
he went to the camp where his boy was stationed and took him home
to Litchfield so that he might have the best of care. His wife
died November 10, 1798, but he survived her several years, dying
March 31, 1810.
