JOHN1 NUTTING
AND SOME OF HIS DESCENDANTS
Contributed by Mrs. May Belle (Bennett) Avery, Lincoln,
Nebraska.
I.
JOHN1
NUTTING was probably the son of John and
Elizabeth (Rawlings) Nutting of Erwarton, county Suffolk, England.
He married, August 28, 1650, Woburn, Massachusetts, Sarah
Iggledon, whose father, Stephen Iggledon, had died in 1638 on the
voyage to America, leaving the mother with two small daughters.
The mother, Mrs. Jane Iggledon, married, secondly, William
Britton, who died May 3, 1655, leaving his widow with two sons.
She married thirdly, Isaac Cole of Charleston, who died June 10,
1674. The widow, Sarah Nutting's mother, died at Woburn, March 10,
1687. Before 1655 John Nutting moved to Chelmsford and by 1663 he
had settled at Groton, where he was an original proprietor with a
17 acre right. His house was one of the five used as a garrison
house for protection from the Indians. This garrison house was
taken by the Indians in their attack on Groton, March 13, 1676,
and it is believed that he was killed at that time. His family
fled to Concord, some of the sons returning later. Sarah Nutting
seems to have spent the remainder of her life at
Woburn.(a)

Concord along with the other inhabitants. He returned, probably in
1678 or 1679, and with his brother James settled on his father's
farm, where he lived the rest of his life. Just when he died is
not known, but he was living in April 1717. Except for the three

V. WILLIAM5
NUTTING (William4,
Jonathan3, John2-1) was
born July 10, 1752, at Groton, Massachusetts, where he lived all
his life. At the time of the Lexington alarm he was a corporal in
Capt. Asa Lawrence's company, and he served at various other times
during the Revolution. He married, December 31, 1778, Mrs. Susanna
(French) Danforth(f), daughter of Col. Joseph and
Rebecca French, who was born at Dunstable, October 16, 1757. She
died, February 12, 1800, and that same year he married, secondly,
Mrs. Mary (Barrett) Hubbard of New Ipswich, New
Hampshire(g). William Nutting was a farmer, although he
showed ability along other lines. When potatoes were introduced
into New England he was one of the first to raise them at Groton.
To increase the slender income of a farmer, he taught school and
made shoes during the winter. The shoes were peddled in other
communities, sometimes in northern New Hampshire and Vermont. He
liked music, composed tunes to hymns, and made himself a bass viol
that he sometimes played. When vaccination for small pox was
introduced into Massachusetts, his own family was vaccinated and
then small pox patients were kept in his home to test immunity.
William Nutting died at Groton, April 18, 1832, his wife surviving
till June 16, 1834. She died at the age of 76
years.(h)

DAKOTA COUNTY, NEBRASKA,
CENSUS 1856.
In 1856 what is now Dixon County was a part
of Dakota County. This enumeration was supposed to have been taken
by Stephen Decatur, who certified as to the correctness of the
returns, Aug. 30, 1856. An examination of the manuscript reveals
that a part of the enumeration was made by some one else.
