This census was taken in compliance with a territorial
law, approved January 28, 1864(a); amendments approved,
February 13, 1865.(b) The enumeration was made by the
precinct assessors and the returns were signed by E. W. Botsford,
county clerk, and dated April 18, 1865. The total population for
the county was given as 5929 persons. Data will be given in

Nebr., Miss Sallie Hole, a native of Havana, Ill. James Reed
married, Mar. 30. 1871, Josephine P. Rector, at Circleville, O. -

(e) Henry Heye, b. Mar. 11, 1836, Hanover, Germany,
son of John G. and Mary (Schultz) Heye, came with his parents to
Clayton Co., Iowa, in Aug. 1847. He married there, Nov. 21, 1857,
Miss Mary Oelka, b. Aug. 1835, Hanover, Germany, daughter of John
and Maggie Oelka. In July 1861 they settled in Otoe Co.-

5. 1819, Essex Co., N. Y., son of David and Lucinda (Chapman)
Hayward, married, first, 1842, Vienna Reynolds, who died 18 months
later. He then moved to Johnson Co., Ill., where he enlisted for
the Mexican War. In 1848 he married, secondly, Miss Elizabeth
Chapman. a native of New York. In 1857 he settled at Nebraska

(j) John S. Place, b. Mar. 27, 1824, lived at
Jeffersonville, Ind., several years before coming to Nebr. in
1855. He was a carpenter. He died at Nebraska City, Feb. 2, 1901,
and his widow, Julia A. Place died Mar. 31, 1903. - Nebraska City

(p) Robert Stafford, b. Oct. 26, 1818, Lincolnshire,
England. married, Mar. 1853, Miss Louisa Pepper, a native of
Lincolnshire, and at once came to America. settling near Shelby,
0. in Apr. 1857 they removed to Nebraska City. - Chapman, pp.

(q) Anton Zimmerer, b. Sept. 15, 1832, Wurtemburg,
Germany. son of Joseph and Maria (Mauch) Zimmerer, learned the
tailor's trade. He came to America in 1853 and Nebraska in 1857.
He lived on a claim in Pawnee Co. three years and then settled at
Nebraska City. He married, secondly, Aug. 30, 1868, Emma Zepf. His
sister, Kunigunda Zimmerer, married William Bischof. - Chapman,

died, Oct. 7, 1892, El Reno, Okla., survived by her husband and by
a daughter, Mrs. D. C. Beyette, Syracuse. - Syracuse
