BOONE COUNTY
Frederick M. Weitzel
OUR years after Nebraska had been admitted into the union and nine years after congress had passed the homestead law, a party of white men from various states came up from Columbus, Neb., to the country now known as Boone County. It was their intention to establish homes under the homestead act.
Records indicate that the party consisted of S. D. Avery, Albert Dresser, N. J. Myers, William H. Stout, W. N. Prescott, John Hammond, Thomas Smith, Julius Day, Charles Bassett, John McGould, Robert Hare, James Hare, a man named Walker and two others from Missouri. The party arrived in April 1871 and camped in the vicinity of the present site of Albion.
Prior to this time, the only white men who had entered the region were surveyors, hunters and trappers. It was the hunting ground of the Pawnee, Omaha, Sioux and Ponca Indians. Here Logan Fontanelle of the Omaha Indians was killed when his hunting party was attacked by Sioux Indians.
It is generally conceded that the county was named for Daniel Boone, the Indian scout. Geology and topography of the county ranges from a deep rich soil to sandy soil. It has rolling land, valleys and uplands. It produces corn, wheat, cereals, alfalfa, clovers and various tame and native grasses. Livestock production has been a leading industry and exhibits in this field have won prizes at state fairs and national livestock shows.
Few manufacturing industries have been established since the pioneer days in Boone County due to the fact that its soil and climate are best adapted to agriculture. It has maintained an annual county fair for fifty-five years.
The first homestead filing was made by Robert Hare. Homes of the early settlers were built of sod. N. G. Myers was the first to have such a dwelling. The first frame building was erected in the center of section 22, township 20, north range 6, west of the sixth principal meridian. It was named the Frontier house.
Soon afterward the Nebraska legislature passed a law creating Boone Counties and thus defined the boundaries: Commencing at the southwest corner of township 18, north of range 8, west; thence east along the northern boundary of the Pawnee reservation to a point where the dividing line between ranges 4 and 5 intersect the same; thence north to the northeast corner of township 22, north of range 5, west; thence west to the northwest corner of township 22, north of range 8, west; thence south to the place of beginning.
John Hammond, Harvey Mericle and S. P. Bollman were sworn in as county commissioners on July 28, 1871. In August of the same year the commissioners met to select an election day. At their third meeting a county seat was chosen on section 22, township 20, range 6, west. County officers were chosen at the election and Albion named as the county seat.
Soon after organization of the county, residents began congregating in their sod houses for religious worship. In 1872 the Methodist and Congregational Churches were formed. The Catholics, Baptists, Lutherans and other denominations organized congregations soon afterward.
The first postoffice, located on a farm near the present site of Albion, was named Hammond. It later was moved and became the Albion postoffice. The first school house was built in 1873 at a cost of less than $400, including the site.
The first newspaper was started in 1874 but soon vanished. In 1876 the Boone County Argus was founded and the Albion Weekly News was established in 1879. Both are still in existence. Other papers published today are the Leader-Outlook, Advance, Primrose Press and Petersburg Index. The first telephone line, constructed in 1895, extended from a grain office to a bank in Petersburg.
In 1879 the county voted $33,000 bonds to the Niobrara and Black Hills Railroad, which was built from Columbus to Albion. Following its completion June 29, 1880, residents of the county held a celebration and banquet which was attended by a number of railroad officials. The line was operated as a branch of the Union Pacific. In 1887 the Fremont, Elkhorn and Missouri Valley Railroad was constructed through the county.
Today there are fourteen precincts in the county: Manchester, Boone, Beaver, Cedar, Plum Creek, Roselma, Ashland, Oakland, Shell Creek, North Branch, Midland, Dublin, Bonanza and Weitzel. Cities and towns are Albion, St. Edward (formerly Waterville), Cedar Rapids, Boone, Petersburg, Loretto, Bradish and Raeville.
Schools of the county have always held high standards. Their pupils have won state honors in48

numerous contests and one of the livestock judging teams was awarded a trip to England after competing at the International Livestock Show. Good parochial schools are distributed throughout the county.
There are three national and two state banks in the county. The county has no bonded indebtedness. Some years ago the U. S. government established a soil conservation station in the county.
An early citizen once remarked in an annual meeting of the Boone County Old Settlers Association that the county had been settled by a "God fearing" people. The county has never been subjected to outlaw depredations nor has it known mob violence. With a faith in a Divine Providence and a determination to work for the common good, residents of the region today are upholding the traditions of their forefathers.
