The best way to use this search is to enter one name, place, or date into the search box and click "Find". From those results click the "Refine" button and enter the next part of the name, place, or date. An example would be John Smith. First search for Smith. On the results page click "Refine" and replace Smith with John, then click search. The second set of results should have pages that have both John and Smith on them but not necessarily John Smith.
Some other qualifiers for the search are +, -, *, and ?. The + will include an extra word. John +Smith will find all pages with John and/or Smith on them. John -Smith find the pages with John but not Smith. * is a wildcard, Smit* will find Smitty, Smith, Smithe, etc. The ? is another wildcard used in the middle of a word. B?ll will find Bill, ball, bull etc. B??l will find Bill, ball, bull, and bowl.
The Rootsweb/Ancestry message boards are not included in this search. You can use their Global Surname Search.
