Beginning in the year 1709, there were several waves of immigrants who came to America from the German region known as “the Palatine”.  After 1709, groups came in 1717, 1722, 1726, and 1740.  One family that emigrated and settled as indentured workers at Livingston Manor was that of Johannes Röhrich, from the village of Höchstenbach; as recorded in the church book at Höchstenbach:  “Johann Röhrich and Joh. Adam Rörrich from Höchstenbach have gone to America in 1740”.  The following genealogical tracing outlines the first three generations of this Röhrich family in New York.  Aside from the primary documents themselves, two sources must be credited for background on this family  MORE PALATINE FAMILIES, by Henry Z. Jones (Picton Press Rockport, ME, 2005); and Mr. Rick Leab, who has been a constant collaborator and resource on the family Röhrich/Rarick/Rorick – and several other variants on the surname.

First Generation

1.  Johannes Röhrich[1] emigrated in 1740 from Höchstenbach, Germany..[2] It is quite possible that Johannes may have died on the journey to America.  While the churchbook at Höchstenbach reports his departure, he is not with his wife and children on the ship manifest for the Samuel and Elizabeth which arrived in Philadelphia that year.

Johannes Röhrich and Anna Elisabetha Schneider were married on 12 Jun 1720 in Sendschöffe at Steinebach, Germany.

Ref:  MORE PALATINE FAMILIES, Henry Z. Jones, p. 219 –

"Johann Rörich, widower from Höchstenbach, md. (4th?)  This agrees perfectly with the Germantown Ref. Chbk, which calls her "d/o Joh. Schneider, at her second marriage to Johannes Rau (Sr.), 28 Nov 1747 (Germantown Ref. Chbk, Snell translation)."  Anna Elisabetha Schneider[3] was born.  Johannes Röhrich and Anna Elisabetha Schneider had the following children:

+2                   i.    Johannes Georg Röhrich, born in 1721, Hochstenbach, Germany.; married Elizabeth Dings, on 28 Aug 1748, Germantown Ref. Church.[4].

3                  ii.    Johann Ernestus Röhrich was baptized on 17 May 1723 in Hachenberg/Altstadt Chbk..[5]  He was born in 1723 in Hochstenbach, Germany..

4                 iii.    Anna Maria Röhrich was baptized on 3 Mar 1726 in Hachenberg/Altstadt Chbk..[6]  She was born in 1726 in Hochstenbach, Germany..  She died prob. bef. 1729.  One might assume this Anna Maria d. before 1729 because Joh. and Anna had a second child by the same name in that year.

5                 iv.    Anna Maria Röhrich was born in 1729 in Hochstenbach, Germany..  She was baptized on 16 Oct 1729 in Hochstenbach, Germany..[7]

+6                   v.    Gertraut Rohrig, born about 1734, Höchstenbach, Germany.; married Andreas Silvernagel, about 1754, Dutchess Co., NY.

Second Generation

2.  Johannes Georg Röhrich (Johannes-1) was born in 1721 in Hochstenbach, Germany..

Johannes Georg Röhrich and Elizabeth Dings were married on 28 Aug 1748 in Germantown Ref. Church..[8]

Bob

If you are referring to John Gerge and Elizabeth Dings Rarick, I have the following children for them:

1. Anna Eva, bapt. 1752 Rhinebeck. (I believe she married Daniel Reifenberger)

2. Wilhelm, bapt. 1754 Rhinebeck. He married Charity Tar Bush. (He is, in my opinion, the William who moved to Steuben County.)

3. Johann Adam, bapt. 1756 Gallatin. (nothing more on him)

4. Elizabeth, bapt. 1758 Gallatin. (nothing more on her)

5. Johann, bapt. 1759 Gallatin. (nothing more on him)

6. Gerhard, bapt. 1761 Linlithgo. He married Anna Maria Simon (I believe he, too, moved to Steuben County. )

7. Maria, bapt. 1770 Gallatin. The Mosher Genealogy says that she is the wife of Peter Mosher of Montgomery County, NY.

It is my opinion that Wilhelm is "the late William Rarick" mentioned in deeds, in Steuben County, where William Jr., John W., and Delana DeLong are selling their shares of his estate. In the 1820 census for Wayne, Steuben County, you will see a Charity Rairick. I believe this to be Charity Tar Bush Rarick, William's widow. Also, in the same town is Mary Rairick. I believe this to be Anna Mary Simon Rarick, Gerhard's widow. I also believe this Gerhard is the father of William (who married Eliz. Bennett, and died in 1877) –(and referred to elsewhere in this document as Weston William) and Garrett (who married Martha Jacoby, Phil Mann's ancestor). This has always been my theory. It remains to be proven.

Congratulations on your discovery of William D. Rarick's death date.

I have been concentrating on other lines in my family tree. Consequently, the Raricks have been put on the back burner. Nevertheless, even though I may not respond to your emails, I do appreciate being kept in the loop.

Best regards.

Rick

+13                vii.    Maria Rarick, born in 1770, Gallatin, NY; married Peter Mosher; died on 22 May 1852, St. Johnsville, Montgomery Co., NY.

EDITOR’S NOTE:  William, and John Georg are very common names in this family and we’ve had a difficult time keeping them properly sorted.  Therefore we’ve attached “labels” to them to help.

  • Weston William is the one buried in the cemetery on the Frank Weston Farm in Steuben County
  • Keuka Hill William is the one who lived on Keuka Hill on the east side of Keuka Lake in Steuben County.
  • Redford William is the one buried in the cemetery at Redford, Michigan

6.  Gertraut Rohrig (Johannes-1) was born about 1734 in Höchstenbach, Germany..

Gertraut Rohrig and Andreas Silvernagel were married about 1754 in Dutchess Co., NY.  Andreas Silvernagel died in Pine Plains, NY.  Gertraut Rohrig and Andreas Silvernagel had the following children:

14                   i.    Adam Silvernagel was born.

15                  ii.    Mary Silvernagel was born.

16                 iii.    Hannah Silvernagel was born about 1753.

17                 iv.    Elizabeth Silvernagel was born on 20 Jul 1755 in Columbia Co., NY.  She was baptized on 20 Jul 1755 in Gallatin Ref. Church, Gallatinville, Columbia Co., NY.[16]

18                   v.    Cornelia Silvernagel was baptized on 13 May 1759 in Gallatin Ref. Church, Gallatinville, Columbia Co., NY.[17]  She was born in 1759 in Columbia Co., NY.

19                 vi.    Catherine Silvernagel was born on 23 Apr 1761.

20                vii.    Andries Silvernagel was born in 1763 in Columbia Co., NY.  He was baptized on 22 Nov 1763 in Gallatin Ref. Church, Gallatinville, Columbia Co., NY.[18]

21               viii.    Johan George Silvernagel was born about 1766 in NY.

22                 ix.    Annatje Silvernagel was born on 15 May 1769.

Third Generation

7.  Anna Eva Rarick (Johannes Georg-2, Johannes-1) was baptized on 19 Mar 1752 in Rhinebeck, NY.[19]  She was born on 29 Apr 1752 in Rhinebeck, NY.

Anna Eva Rarick and Daniel Reifenberger were married.  Daniel Reifenberger was born.  Anna Eva Rarick and Daniel Reifenberger had the following children:

23                   i.    Anatje Reifenberger was baptized on 20 Oct 1785 in Gallatin Ref. Church, Gallatinville, Columbia Co., NY.[20]  She was born on 12 Oct 1875 in Gallatinville, Dutchess, NY.

8.  Wilhelm/William (Keuka Hill) Rarick (Johannes Georg-2, Johannes-1) was born on 26 Feb 1754 in Rhinebeck, NY.  He was baptized on 24 Mar 1754 in Rhinebeck, NY.[21]  He died about 1831 in Wayne, Steuben Co., NY.

Wilhelm/William (Keuka Hill) Rarick and Charity TarBush were married about 1776 in NY.

William Rerigh and Charity Teerbush are the sponsors at the baptism of Charity Klein, b. 21 May 1789, bap. 20 Jun 1789, dau. of Adam Klein and his wife, Eva Gertruyd Miller (Gallatin Ref. Churchbook, # 1000)

Elsewhere in this database is Adam Rarick, b. 1791 in Dutchess Co., NY, who eventually settled in Tioga Co., PA, about the same time as John W., son of Keuka Hill Wilhelm/William,  His birth date fits in the gap between Mariah and Delana, and I suspect he may be a sibling.  Obviously, proof  is needed, though several of his descendants are in and around Steuben Co.

Charity TarBush was born.  Charity Rarrick shows in the 1820 census for Wayne, Steuben Co., NY, where she is over the age of 45 years (1775).  She is in the immediate proximity of John W. Rarrick, and Andrew and Joseph Huyck/Houck.  John W. would be her son, Andrew and Joseph her sons-in-law.

In the Palatine records of Henry Jones' books on those immigrant families, Charity is often an Anglicization of Gertrude, and in the records of the Dutch churches of Columbia and  Dutchess counties in New York, the spelling of this Charity's name ranges all the way from Charity to Gertrude, to Gertruy, and several other variations. The same variants appear for her daughter, who married William Silvernail.

In the Gallatin Baptism Book, she appears as:

Gertchen Dorbush; Charity Teerbush (2); Gertruy Terbush; and Charity Busch.  In every record, she is listed with William Rorich/Reerigh/Roric, etc.  In the 1789 record where she and William are sponsors, it is not clear if they are married yet. They are listed as William Rorich and Charity Teerbush.  Wilhelm/William (Keuka Hill) Rarick and Charity TarBush had the following children:

+24                   i.    John W. Rarick, born on 12 Jun 1777, Dutchess Co., NY[22]; married Catherine [Rarick]; died on 19 Dec 1851, Chatham, Tioga Co., PA[23].

25                  ii.    Johannes Rarick was born about May 1778 in Gallatinville, Dutchess, NY.  He was baptized on 14 Jun 1778 in Gallatin Ref. Church, Gallatinville, Columbia Co., NY.[24]

26                 iii.    George Rarick was baptized on 14 Jun 1778 in Gallatin Ref. Church, Gallatinville, Columbia Co., NY.[25]  He was born in 1778 in Columbia Co., NY.  He died in NY.

27                 iv.    Hendrick Rarick was born on 1 Mar 1783 in Columbia Co., NY.  He was baptized on 30 Mar 1783 in Gallatin Ref. Church, Gallatinville, Columbia Co., NY.[26]  He died in NY.

+28                   v.    Elizabeth Rarick, born on 28 Jan 1784, Dutchess Co., NY; married Andrew Houck; died on 11 Sep 1856, Wayne, Schuyler Co., NY.

29                 vi.    Eliza Rarick was born on 3 Feb 1786 in Columbia Co., NY.  She was baptized on 6 Mar 1786 in Reformed Church, West Copake, Columbia Co., NY.[27]

+30                vii.    Mariah Rarick, born on 7 Aug 1786, Dutchess Co., NY; married Joseph Houck, on 20 Dec 1815, Yates Co., NY; died on 12 Apr 1864, Yates Co., NY[28].

+31               viii.    Adam Rarick, born about 1791, NY; married Sarah (Sally) [Rarick], about 1820, NY; died after 3 Jun 1880, Ulster, Bradford, PA.  Much stronger evidence is needed to prove that Adam belongs in this family.

+32                 ix.    Charity Rarick, born on 22 Apr 1792, Columbia Co., NY; married William Silvernail, about 1800; died NY.

+33                   x.    Delana (Laney) Rarick, born about 1795, Dutchess Co., NY; married John DeLong, in 1816, Steuben Co., NY.

34                 xi.    Lena Rarick was born on 7 Feb 1796 in Columbia Co., NY.  She was baptized in 1796 in Gallatin Ref. Church, Gallatinville, Columbia Co., NY.[29]  She died in NY.

+35                xii.    William (Redford) Rarick, born in 1797, NY; married Margaret Bird, about 1826, NY; died on 7 Oct 1876, Redford, Wayne Co., MI.

12.  Gerhard* (Gerrit) Rarick (Johannes Georg-2, Johannes-1) was born in 1761 in Linlithgo, NY.[30],[31]  He was baptized on 30 Aug 1761 in Linlithgo Reformed Church, Columbia Co., NY.[32]

Gerhard* (Gerrit) Rarick and Anna Mary Simon were married.

*The construct of this family is derived from the work of Connecticut's Rick Leab... I find it hard to believe that there were no more children than William and Gerrit. Perhaps we need to go looking for "Lost Raricks" who might be part of this family.  There's a 21 year gap between William and Gerrit. We're either mistaken about these two children, or there should be several more between them.  Anna Mary Simon was born.  Gerhard* (Gerrit) Rarick and Anna Mary Simon had the following children:

+36                   i.    William (Weston) Rarrick, born in 1779, Duchess Co., NY; married Elizabeth Bennett; died on 30 Apr 1877, Town of Orange, Schuyler Co., NY.

+37                  ii.    Gerrit Rarick, born about 1800, Dutchess Co., NY; married Martha Jacoby; died after 1860, Steuben Co., NY.

13.  Maria Rarick (Johannes Georg-2, Johannes-1) was baptized on 5 May 1770 in Gallatin Ref. Church, Gallatinville, Columbia Co., NY.[33]  She was born in 1770 in Gallatin, NY.  She died on 22 May 1852 in St. Johnsville, Montgomery Co., NY. Maria Rarick and Peter Mosher were married.

HISTORY OF FULTON COUNTY, NEW YORK, Brothingham, Published in 1892

The town [of Oppenheim] was first settled around 1791 by Palatine Germans from Oppenheim, Germany.  The Town of

Oppenheim was established in 1808 from the Town of Palatine before the formation of Fulton County. When Fulton County was formed in 1838, the south part of Oppenheim was used to form the town of St. Johnsville which remained in Montgomery County. The early occupations of townspeople were associated with dairy and cheese-making activities

MOSHER, Fredrick, Oppenheim, was born September 8, 1832 and is the oldest of six children reared by Leonard and Adelia (Bellinger) Mosher.

Fredrick was reared on a farm and received a common school education.  In 1856 he married Lydia, daughter of Silas and  Elisabeth (Acker) Adams.  Fredrick was a poor boy and worked on a farm.  He is now well to do, occupying himself with farming and bee-keeping.  He has no children.  Leonard Mosher was the son of Peter Mosher, who was a pioneer of Oppenheim, having come to that town in 1796. His wife was a Miss Rerick, by whom he had six sons and three daughters.

Leonard was born in Oppenheim in 1811, and received a common school education, afterwards following farming.  In 1831 he married Adelia Bellinger, daughter of Fredrick Bellinger, an early settler of the township.  Leonard was a commissioner of highways and collector of Oppenheim and died September 14, 1889. His wife died March 22, 1852.  Silas Adams, father of Mrs. Leonard Mosher was a shoemaker and came to Fulton County where he lived about two years, then moved to Herkimer County. Afterwards he moved to Illinois, where he died.

[34],[35]  Peter Mosher was born in 1775 in Montgomery Co., NY.  He died in Aug 1821 in Oppenheim, Montgomery Co., NY.  Page 3.

IN SUMMARY:  These three generations are the beginning of some fifteen generations of persons by the Surname Röhrich/Rarick/Rarrick, etc., who are descended from this group of Palatine Immigrants.  It is our hope that in the passage of time, we will be able to publish a much more complete history on this family and make it available in a few historical societies and libraries for the use of other researchers.

[22] Obituary, Auburn Christian Advocate. RARICK John

John Rarick died in Chatham, Dec. 19, 1851. Father Rarick was born in Dutchess County, N.Y., June 12, 1777. He experienced religion the 15th day of January, 1844. Soon afterwards, he joined the M.E. Church, in the town of Wayne, Steuben county, N,.Y., under brother Bacon's labors. He was always faithful in the discharge of his duty as a Christian, in his family and in the Church, and in meetings his seat was never found unoccupied, when he was able to attend. He suffered much in body, for the last eight months. During all of his affliction, he was resigned to his lot, and towards the last, he was anxiously looking for the hour that should release him from earth and land him in heaven, his long-sought rest. R. Macomber. Little Marsh, Pa. January 1852. From the Auburn Christian Advocate, date ambiguous.

This is John W. Rarick, who along with William, Jr. and Delaney DeLong, sold their interests in the estate of "the late William Rarick" in 1831. John W., and his wife Catherine, are in Chatham, Tioga County, PA in the 1850 census. They are the parents of Sarah Rarick, who married James Brady in Wayne, Nov. 19, 1841. Catherine is living with the Bradys  in 1860.
