Clyde Hugh McKenzie

Clyde McKenzie, 87, of Rt. 1 Box 9, Summerville, died Sunday at Grande Ronde Hospital.

Mr. McKenzie was born on, at Summerville, the son of Roderick and Isabella (Thompson) McKenzie. On Dec. 23, 1913, he married Myra J. Glenn in La Grande. She preceded him in death on May 13, 1971.

McKenzie spent his entire life as a farmer and stockman on his Century Farm, west of Summerville, and specialized in raising registered Hereford cattle. He remained active in farm management until his death. He was a charter member of the Tri-County Hereford Association, the Union County Cattlemen's Association, the Oregon Cattlemen's Association, the Farm Bureau, and the La Grande Mavericks.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Glen and Jean McKenzie of Summerville, nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Daniels Valley Funeral Chapel with Rev. Paul O. Jewell officiating. Vault interment will follow at the Summerville Cemetery.

SPOKANE MAN KILLED IN WRECK ON HIGHWAY

John MacKenzie, 22, college athlete of Spokane, was killed six miles west of La Grande on the Old Oregon Trail highway late Saturday night. He was found dead beneath his overturned truck. First reports that he had fallen asleep at the wheel were acouted (sic) by friends, who declared he might have been blinded by light from an approaching car.

MacKenzie was halfback on the Gonzaga college football team and was working for the Joslin, McAllister Construction company during his vacation. He also was a basketball player and member of the track team. He was en route to La Grande from Portland. His body was taken to Spokane.

Myra June (Glenn) McKenzie

Myra J. McKenzie of Summerville died on Thursday at a local hospital at the age of 82.

Mrs. McKenzie was born June 4, 1888 at Summerville, the daughter of Tolbert T. and Sarah Glenn.

She attended Pleasant Grove school. On December 23, 1913 she was married to Clyde McKenzie in La Grande.

Survivors include her husband Clyde and one son Glen both of Summerville; nieces, Violet Glenn Maughan, Eugene; Ena Glenn Warnock, Lostine; Mildred Standley Beedle, Reno, Nev.; Bonnie Settlemire Higinbotham, Central Point; Pauline Rinehart Hartsock and Jean Rinehart Thorson, both of California; Geneva Glenn Hamm, Portland; and Carol Glenn Conley, McMinnville; nephews, Elmer Glenn, Upland, California; Keith Glenn, Summerville; Dale Standley, La Grande; Roderick McKenzie, Corvallis; O. W. McKenzie, Wallowa; Glenn Rinehart, California; and Clayton McKenzie, Hermiston.

Mrs. McKenzie was a member of the Presbyterian Church, a charter member of the Mavericks and the Cow Belles and a member of the Farm Bureau.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 17 at 2 p.m. at Daniels Valley Funeral Chapel with Rev. Jack MacLeod officiating. Vault interment will follow at the Summerville Cemetery.

Well-known farmer, Mason passes

Robert A. (Alex) McKenzie died Saturday at a local hospital. He was 82 years old.

He served as a Union County Commissioner from 1939 to 1943, and was Union County Judge from February through April of 1943.

Mr. McKenzie was born on November 21, 1887 in Summerville, Oregon, the eldest son of Roderick and Isabella McKenzie. He was a lifelong farmer and resided in the Summerville area until his retirement when he moved to La Grande and lived at 1503 4th St.

He is survived by two brothers, Clyde of Summerville and Le Roy of Corvallis; nephews, Glen McKenzie, Summerville; Kenneth Cooper and Rod McKenzie, both of Corvallis; O. W. McKenzie, Wallowa; Clayton McKenzie, Hermiston; and Clarence McKenzie, Sacramento, California; nieces Jean Thornton and Pauline Hartsock, both of California.

Mr. McKenzie was a member of the La Grande Elks Lodge No. 433, and the Presbyterian Church and was for many years the secretary of the Summerville Cemetery Association. He was an avid horseshoe player and was a member of the La Grande Horseshoe Club.

He was a devoted member of Masonic Organizations which included the following: Life member of Elgin Lodge No. 87, AF & AM; Baker Consistory Scottish Rite 33rd Degree; La Grande Chapter No. 9 Royal Arch Masons; Union Council No. 5 Royal and Select Masters; Eastern Oregon Commandery No. 6, Knights Templar; Thistle Clan Royal Order of Scotland; Union County Shrine Club; Al Kader Temple; Honorary Member Livingston Montana Consistory Scottish Rite 33rd Degree; St. Laurence Conclave, Red Cross Of Constantine; Blue Mountain Chapter No. 52, O. E. S.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the First Christian Church of La Grande under the auspices of the Elgin Lodge No. 67 AF & AM. Rev. Jack McLeod and Rev. William S. Woodman officiating. Interment will follow at the Summerville Cemetery.

Those who wish may make contributions in memory of Alex McKenzie to the Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children, in care of Daniels Valley Chapel, Box 772. Daniels Valley Chapel is in charge of funeral arrangements.
