near Brownsville, Linn Co., Oregon T13S R3W Section 23 9 Oct 1935 This cemetery is situated about two miles north and a trifle west of Brownsville. It is about one third mile back from the road and upon the first noticeable bench of a butte which, in early days, bore the name of "Pleasant Butte" but is now more generally known as the Earl Harrison Butte. The name "Pleasant Butte" comes from the name of the Pleasant Butte Baptist Church which formerly stood near this cemetery. Pleasant Butte Baptist Church was organized in 1853. The name was given to the church by Rev. Joab Powell, pioneer Baptist preacher of Linn County. To reach the Cemetery it is necessary to leave the public road from Brownsville to Linn Station at a point about one fourth mile north of the first railroad crossing north from Brownsville. The gate to the cemetery opens into the Earl Harrison barnyard. The track then travels westward between two Harrison barns and on up the hill through a pasture for about one third of a mile. Incidentally, the barn to the right as you enter the Harrison property is very old and was formerly a church - that same Pleasant Butte Church already mentioned. Its original site, however, was well up on the butte. Other land marks to aid in finding the cemetery are Linn Station on the Lebanon-Brownsville branch of the S.P. Ry. which is perhaps 1/? mile north-east from the cemetery plat. The Government Airway Beacon is directly above the cemetery on the crest of the butte and a trifle to the westward. The Cemetery is well fenced but otherwise not well cared for. It is badly grown up to the trailing vinca which so often overruns and spoils pioneer Willamette Valley Burying grounds. This cemetery comprises a rectangular tract of about Sixteen by seventeen rods. The entrance is on the north east side. A fine view is had of the surrounding country from the cemetery gate. There is little or no attempt at planting here. Lilac bushes seem to have been the favorite decorative shrub. One fine Oregon maple stands near the centre of the plot, the only tree of any size. This Cemetery is owned by the Baptist Church of Brownsville. Many of the old graves here are of prominent pioneer Baptist clergymen and laymen. When this cemetery was first opened is not known. The earliest date of record on the stones is that of Mary Ann Cochran, wife of H.R. Powell who died in 1853 - the same year as the founding of the Pleasant Butte Church. Maps were not available but it is believed that this cemetery was originally platted on the Claiborn Hill Donation land claim. Claiborn Hill was a Deacon and influential member in the old church. (Oldest birth date here that of Chas. Rice, 1797.) Historic Notes W.A. Stanard. Early pioneer. Son-in-law of Claiborn Hill. Father of Harvey Stanard and Chas. Edward Stanard who were very prominent local citizens. Grandfather of Everett Earl Stanard, writer. All the above are buried in this cemetery. J.H. Washburn. 1822-1905. At one time a partner in the very old pioneer store (Cooley * Washburn). This store was started by Hugh L. Brown and Capt. James Blakely, founders of Brownsville. It still operates as "Cooley & Co." in South Brownsville. Its founding was probably 1851. Rev. William Sperry. 1812-1857. First pastor and one of the founders of the Pleasant Butte Baptist Church which once stood near this cemetery. Was founded in 1853. Still carries on as the Baptist Church of Brownsville. Mary Ann Cochran, wife of H.R. Powell. 1838-1853. Appears to be the oldest grave in this cemetery. Buried the same year that the Pleasant Butte Church was organized. Charles Edward Stanard. Prominent Brownsville merchant for many years. William O. Sperry 1854-1918. Son of Wm. Sperry Sr. who was the first partor of the Pleasant Butte Church. Rev. C.C. (Carpus) Sperry. 1830-1909. Son of Wm. Sperry Sr. Like his father he became pastor of the Pleasant Butte Baptist Church and so remained for many years. Harvey A. Stanard. Son of A.W. Stanard. Grandson of Claiborn Hill (Both buried here). He was the father of Everett Earl Stanard (Also buried here) who was a writer of local fame. Everett Earl Stanard. Son of Harvey Stanard. Grandson of A.W. Stanard and Rev. Joab Powell. Great grandson of Deacon Claiborn Hill (Buried here). Claiborne Hill. Deacon and one of the founders of the Pleasant Butte Church. Prominent in early Baptist activities. Charles Rice. 1798-1883. Earliest birth date in this cemetery. Powells. (Many). This region of low rolling buttes is often known as the "Powell Hills". This Powell family are relatives in various degrees to the Rev. Joab Powell, eccentric and talented Pioneer Baptist Preacher. Olive Powell Stanard. 1868-1912. Wife of Harvey Stanard. Daughter of Rev. Joab Powell. Mother of Everett Earl Stanard , local historical writer. (Buried here).
