Haas, Jody A. (JUN 1962 - 23 APR 1964)

A 22-month-old boy was killed Thursday afternoon when he was caught in the power takeoff of a tractor on the family farm about 4 miles southwest of here in the town of Worden (Clark Co., Wis.).

The victim was Jody Allen Haas, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Haas. The family has two other small children.

The father told authorities he was preparing to unload stones from a spreader attached to the tractor. Before starting the tractor he saw his son nearby and sent him to the house, watching until the lad did as he was told.

Then he started the tractor and began unloading the stones. Shortly afterwards, the sound of the tractor indicated some trouble. It was then that the father found the son's body tightly wedged between the tractor hitch and the power takeoff. It took almost a half hour to free the dead child, who clothing was tightly wound around the shaft.

The power takeoff is a revolving shaft, to which a belt drive can be attached to operate other machinery, utilizing power provided by the tractor engine.

Funeral services for the child were held at St. Bernard's Catholic Church here at 10 a.m. Saturday. The Rev. Francis Brockman, pastor, officiated, and burial was in the parish cemetery.

The child is survived by his parents, a sister, Cheryl, 3, and a brother, Francis, 1. Other survivors are the maternal and paternal grandparents.
