Zenas Randall Bliss soldier, was born in Johnston, R.I., April 17, 1835, the son of Zenas and Phoebe W. (Randall) Bliss, and grandson of Zenas and Keziah (Wilmarth) Bliss, and of Judge Samuel and Cynthia (Waterman) Randall. He was graduated at the U.S. military academy in 1854, was promoted 2d lieutenant in the 8th infantry March 3, 1865, let lieutenant Oct. 17, 1860, and captain May 14, 1861. He became colonel of the 10th Rhode Island volunteers May 26, 1862; was transferred to the 7th Rhode Island volunteers [p.330] Aug. 21, 1862, and was brevetted major, Dec. 13, 1862, for gallant and meritorious services in the battle of Fredericksburg and also received the Congressional Medal of Honor. He commanded the military district of Middle Tennessee, 1863-1964, and a brigade in the battles of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania and Petersburg crater. He was brevetted lieutenant-colonel, commanded the military district of Charleston, S.C., in 1865, and was provost judge in Pennsylvania in 1866. He was promoted to the rank of major and assigned to the 39th infantry, Aug. 7, 1867; was transferred to the 25th infantry March 15, 1869; promoted lieutenant-colonel of the 19th infantry, March 4, 1879; colonel of the 24th infantry, April 20, 1886; brigadier-general in the U.S. army April 25, 1895; commander of the department of Texas, and major-general in the regular army, May 14, 1897.
