Herbert Lorenzo Bliss
was born September 28, 1854 in Cooper Township, Kalamazoo County, MI, the
son of George Washington Bliss (#3382) and Helen M. Boynton, both of New
York. Mr. Bliss was a prominent resident of Plainwell, Michigan and a
member of an old and respected family. His parents engaged in
farming and business in this part of the state and Mr. Bliss, in turn,
spent his entire life in this vicinity. On August 27, 1879, he was
united in marriage to Miss Lydia Bachelder of Alamo. For years, he
was an active business man in Plainwell. He was for a time a member
of the firm Bliss and Owen and later bought and conducted this enterprise
himself. He was united in marriage to Miss Mary Elizabeth Buxton on
February 14, 1894.
He was a lifelong member of the Methodist Episcopal
Church and had been for many years one of its leading officials. He
was always ready to assume a fair share of its work and
responsibility.
Mr. Bliss will long be remembered as a man whose
life was above reproach, whose interests were unselfish and diversified.
He loved his family, his church and his community. And so in his
passing, he leaves many warm friends who sorrow and feel a distinct
personal loss. |
