Death of a Pioneer
James Barnett YOUNG--was born at Gosport, Indiana, October 30, 1833, and
died at Wichita Kansas, February 28, 1918, aged 84 years having lived in
the state nearly sixty-one years.
He received a common, school education and also attended Depew University
at Greencastle, Indiana. In 1857 he came to Humboldt, which was just being
laid out. Later he engaged in the mercantile business with Dr. WAKEFIELD.
At the outbreak of the war he joined the Home Guards, and was taken
prisoner when the town was captured and burned. He served as county
treasurer from 1876 to 1880. In 1886 he moved to Macksville, Kansas, where
later he engaged in the lumber, grain and coal businesses, and also in
farming on a large scale until he moved to Wichita in 1904.
In 1865 he married Miss Alice CORMAN of Humboldt who survives him. He
leaves two sons, John S. and Fred C. of Wichita. Three other sons died in
childhood. He also leaves three sisters and one brother living in Indiana.
Mr. YOUNG served four years in the Union army, part of the time as
quartermaster sergeant, received an honorable discharge, and at the time of
his death was a member of Garfield Post at Wichita.
In early life he united with the Christian Church and later, for many
years, served as an elder or deacon and also superintendent of the Sunday
School.
