Gladys C. Rulla Ehlers

Gladys C. Ehlers, 99 years of age, of Beatrice, NE. passed away at the Good Samaritan Center in Beatrice, NE. Wednesday morning, November 15, 2006. She was born on October 27, 1907 at Tate, NE. and was a resident in Gage County her entire life, moving into Beatrice, NE. in 1958. She and George E. Ehlers were married on October 26, 1927 in Sidney, Iowa. She had been employed as a retail clerk at Gambles, Tempo and ALCO, all in Beatrice, NE. She was a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Barneston, NE. and a member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Beatrice, NE. She enjoyed growing plants (especially violets), crocheting and knitting.

Survivors include her son Edwin J. Ehlers and wife Ruth of Grand Junction, CO.; daughter in law Judy Ehlers of Mobile, Alabama; 8 grandchildren, Cynthia Cyphers Galica and husband David, Raymond Cyphers, Suzanne Cyphers Frahm and husband Bob, John Ehlers and wife Sue, Johanna Ehlers, Jeffrey Ehlers and wife Stacy, Scott Ehlers and wife Dorte, and Shari Ehlers; 6 great grandchildren, Michael Galica, Kelsey Ehlers, Robbie Ehlers, Alexa Ehlers, Casper Ehlers, and Annika Ehlers. She was preceded in death by her parents Fred and Mary (Grow) Rulla; husband George E. Ehlers (1961); daughter Maurine Cyphers; and son Frederick E. Ehlers.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, November 18, 2006 at the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice, NE. with Reverend Joann Kramer officiating. Interment will be at the Barneston Cemetery, Barneston, NE. A lunch will be served at the Barneston American Legion Club after the interment. The body will lie in state Friday from 12-9:00 and Saturday until the time of the service at the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice, NE. A memorial has been established to the Beatrice Community Hospital Hospice Program and the St. John Lutheran Church with the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in charge. Darrel D. Bothwell

Darrel D. Bothwell, age 78 years, of Barneston, died Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Omaha. He was born August 12, 1929, to Clifton and Edna (Parks) Bothwell in Marshall County, Kansas. He attended Deer Creek School and Marysville High School. Darrel married Gertrude Nemec on November 28, 1953. He served in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict and with the Army Reserves until 1961. Darrel was a farmer, ran heavy equipment, drilled water wells, and worked at Dempster Industries as a welder for 20 years. He was a member of the Barneston Amercian Legion Post 356. He had a passion for old tractors and steam engine thrashing shows. His hobbies included reading, gardening, visiting with friends and family, and especially teasing children to make them laugh, including the time he spent in the nursing home.

Darrel is survived by four children, Barbara Harberts and her husband Matt, Peggy Franzen, and Richard Bothwell and Elaine, all of Barneston, and Nancy Williamson and her husband Harold “Willie” of Keystone Heights, Fla; by grandchildren, Brian Harberts and his wife Jennifer of Lincoln, Ashley Harberts of Wymore, Clifton Williamson and Anna Lee Williamson, both of Keystone Heights, Fla., Sam and Josh Franzen, Jody Newby and her husband Brandon, all of Barneston, and Eddie, Andy, and Anthony “Tony;” by great-grandchildren, Alycia and Brandon Harberts of Lincoln, Noah “Captain” Sewell, and Adrian and Zachary Newby, all of Barneston; by two sisters, Betty Weyer and Mary Ann Bothwell of Columbus, Neb.; and by two brothers, Arlyn Bothwell of Redding, Calif., and Kenneth Bothwell of Lincoln. Darrel was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Gertrude, on Feb. 22, 1994; by a brother, Eddie; and by a son, Quinten Bothwell, on July 21, 2007.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, March 17, 2008, at the Wymore Church Of Christ, Hwy 77 and M Street, Clayton Lundstedt officiating. Military service will be presented by the Barneston American Legion Post 356 at the Barneston Cemetery. The body will lie in state at the Laughlin-Hoevet Funeral Home, 505 N. Quinten A. Bothwell

Quinten A. Bothwell, age 47 years, of Barneston, died Saturday, July 21, 2007, at the Community Memorial Healthcare in Marysville, Kan. He was born Jan. 25, 1960, at Marysville to Darrel and Gertrude (Nemec) Bothwell. He attended Deer Creek rural school north of Marysville and learned to farm on the Bothwell farm near Deer Creek. He was a 1979 graduate of Barneston High School. He married Jennifer Colgrove on Oct. 21, 1994, at Seneca, Kan. He was employed as a machinist at Dempster Industries in Beatrice, was very involved with the family business doing plumbing and well drilling, was a torch operator for Landoll Corp. in Marysville, and was a mechanic at Gage County Oil in Beatrice. He was known as a “Jack of all trades” and fixed and repaired most everything mechanical. Quinten was a former member of the Barneston Volunteer Fire Dept. and the Sons of the American Legion Post 356 at Barneston. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, gardening, listening to music and spending time with his friends, family and pets.

Quinten is survived by his wife, Jennifer; by three sons, Eddie, Andrew and Anthony “Tony”; by a stepson, Casey Colgrove; by his father, Darrel Bothwell of Beatrice; by a brother, Richard Bothwell and Elaine of Barneston; by sisters, Peggy Franzen and Barbara Harberts and her husband, Matt, all of Barneston, and Nancy Williamson and her husband, Harold “Willy,” of Keystone Heights, Fla.; by his mother-in-law, Deanna Colgrove of Wymore; by his father-in-law, Jim Nyberg of Falls City; by a sister-in-law, Stacey Benson of Blue Springs; by a brother-in-law, Travis Nyberg, stationed in South Korea; by his grandmother-in-law, Betty Zulick of Marysville; and by nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother, Gertrude Bothwell on Feb. 22, 1994; by his grandparents, Wesley and Anna Nemec and Cliffton and Edna Bothwell; and by his grandparents-in-law, Ivan and Josephine Colgrove.

Dorothy Brucker, 71, Marysville, Kan., died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2007, at Community Memorial Healthcare, Marysville. Born May 2, 1935, at Adams, Neb. Owner and operator of a massage therapy and beautician business.

Survivors: husband, Alphys; daughter, Linda Padgett of Marysville; grandchildren, Scott Padgett of Marysville, Reneé Lyons of Overland Park, Kan.; four great-grandsons; sisters, Irene Johnson of Lincoln, Neb., Johanna Forsyth of Rio Grande, N.J., and Bertha Mangold of Marysville, Kan.; half sisters, Elizabeth Behrens and Grace Pickett, both of Lincoln, Neb. Warren E. Volesky

Warren E. Volesky, 78, of Beatrice, died at the Paddock Kensington in Beatrice on Tuesday morning, May 13, 2008. He was born on March 18, 1930, at Oketo, Kansas, and attended school in Barneston, Nebraska, and Marysville, Kansas, before graduating from Oketo High School in 1947.

He served as a postman in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from 1951 until 1953 and was stationed in Germany. He was married to Margaret Siebels Fredrickson on July 28, 1956 in Marysville, Kansas, and they lived in Filley and on a farm south of Filley before moving to Beatrice in 1982. He worked as a farmhand, managed the Virginia Elevator until 1974, and worked at Dempsters and Totes-Hoover Universal before retiring in 1994. He moved to the Paddock Kensington in July of 2003 and had played in the Kensington Band. He was a member of Fisher Post 367 of the American Legion of Virginia, Nebraska. His hobbies include fishing, gardening, hunting, working crossword and jigsaw puzzles. He was also an avid college sports fan.

Survivors include three sons, Galen E. Volesky of Friend, Nebraska, Michael Volesky and his wife Vonda of Litchfield Park, Arizona, and Robert Volesky of Beatrice, Nebraska, and his son Brandon; three daughters, Denise Cole and her husband Kevin of Columbia, Missouri, and their two daughters, Heather and Amber, Donna Rae Graham of Barneston and her children, Jerald, Janice and Joe and Norma Jean White and husband Sam of Huntington Beach, California, and their children Michelle, Michael, Melissa and Marcia; one son-in-law, Will Trauernicht of Westminster, Colorado, and his children, Amy and Nicole; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; one brother, Jack Volesky and his wife Margie of Oketo, Kansas; three sisters, Joan Klozenbucher and her husband Cleo of Greenleaf, Kansas, Rosalie Roady and her husband Warren of Marysville, Kansas, and Sharon Albert of Beatrice, Nebraska; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John A. and Pearl Warren Volesky; his wife, Margaret, who died on July 15, 1993; one daughter, Patricia Ann Trauernicht, who died in 2008; and one son-in-law, Ross “Doc” Graham, who died in 2002.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2008, at the Fox Funeral Home, 19th and Garfield streets, Beatrice, Nebraska, with Pastor Jack Magness officiating. Arlyn H. Weyer, age 74 years, of Wymore died Thursday, April 21, 2011 at the Wymore Good Samaritan Center. He was born Oct. 5, 1936 on a farm near Barneston, lived most of all of his life in that area, and was a 1954 graduate of Barneston High School. He married Helen Holsapple on Nov. 10, 1957 at the Marysville Methodist Church. He was a lifelong farmer and raised dairy cattle, and they moved to Wymore in April 2008. Arlyn was a member of the former Barneston Presbyterian Church where he served on the church board, and was currently a member of the Wymore United Methodist Church and was a past master of Barneston Lodge #165, A.F. & A.M. He was a former member of the Barneston School Board, was a member and past president of the Barneston Cemetery Board, was a leader of the Liberty Livestock 4-H Club, and was a bus driver for Barneston Public School for many years. His hobbies included livestock and going to the casinos.

Arlyn is survived by his wife, Helen; by his children, Joy Tennant and her husband Mike of Beatrice; Allyn Weyer and his wife Julie, Diane Creek and her husband John, and Lori Novotny and her husband Randy, all of Wymore; by 13 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; by a sister, Darlene Barton of Lincoln; by sisters-in-law, Betty Weyer of Beatrice; Evelyn Weyer of Wymore; Grace Neitzert and her husband August of Huron, S.D.; Janet Kay Temple of Bennington, KS; and Mary Green of Englewood, CO; by a brother-in-law, Glenn Holsapple and his wife Jeannete of Marysville, KS; and by nieces and nephews. Arlyn was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Anna (Zimmerman) Weyer; by three brothers, Donald Weyer and his wife Eva Mae; Melvin Weyer and Arvid Weyer; and by a brother-in-law, Donovan Barton.

Richard D. Holmbeck, 79, Pharr, Texas, died Sunday, May 21, 2006. He was born Feb. 23, 1927, at Wymore, Neb.

Beloved husband of Glenna; father of John and family of Barneston, Neb., Kathy Hooks and family of Philadelphia, Pa., Jack and family of Corpus Christi, Texas, Karolyn Howard and family of Beatrice, Neb., and father to Kelly Schmutzler and Julie Kay of Dallas Texas, Roy Schmutzler and family of Holmesville, Neb., Tony Schmutzler and family of Oregon, Della Bartels and family of St. Joe, Mo., Joy Closs and family of Theodosia, Mo., and was grandfather and great-grandfather of 19. Dick was a farmer, retired railroad engineer, and was involved in politics many years. He retired and moved to his much loved home and people in the Valley.

He is preceded in this life by his children's mother, Florence Sutter Holmbeck; parents, Anna and Earl Holmbeck; and daughter, Tina Schmutzler.

Private family burial at the Barneston Cemetery, Barneston, Neb., will be Sunday, May 28. Family and friends are welcome to gather at 2 p.m. at the Barneston Legion after the burial.

Harold Jacob Weyer

Harold Jacob “Jake” Weyer, 81, of Barneston died Saturday, Dec. 24, 2011 at the Kensington in Beatrice.

He was born May 30, 1930, at Barneston where he had lived his entire life, graduating from Barneston High School in 1948. He was a lifelong farmer and raised cattle. He also did custom haying and hauled livestock. Harold served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from Jan. 12, 1953, to Nov. 23, 1954.

Harold is survived by a nephew, Loren Graham and wife Michele of Palmyra, Mo.; niece, Linda Andreesen and husband, Arlan of Hollister, Mo.; five great nieces and nephews, and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Emma (Haas) Weyer; and by his sister and brother-in-law, Helene and Lawrence Graham.

Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2011, at the Barneston Cemetery with Reverend James McNeal officiating. Military honors will be conducted by Anderson Post 25 of the American Legion of Wymore. The body will lie in state at the Laughlin-Hoevet Funeral Home, 505 N. 9th Street, Wymore on Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2011, from 2 - 9 p.m. Memorial to the Barneston Unit 356 of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Alphys L. Brucker

Alphys L. Brucker, 90, of Marysville, Kansas died Saturday, November 12, 2011 at Community Memorial Healthcare in Marysville.

A funeral service was held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at Kinsley Mortuary. Gary Phillips officiated.

Burial was in the Barneston Cemetery, Barneston, Nebraska.

Alphys was born on January 30, 1921 near Oketo, Kansas, the son of Albert and Susan (Votroubek) Brucker.

On December 31, 1950 he married Dorothy Waltke. She preceded him in death on January 16, 2007.

Alphys was a life long farmer in the Oketo and Home City areas.

Survivors include his daughter, Linda Padgett, Marysville; two grandchildren, Scott (Joy) Padgett, Marysville, and Renee' (James) Lyons, Kansas City, KS; four great-grandchildren, Kristofer Padgett, Shane Padgett, Trey Padgett and Drew Padgett; and sister, Arlouene Davis, Cheyenne, WY.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; three brothers, Charles, Hugo and Ralph; three sisters, Mildred Schwindt, Rosie Jefferies, and his twin sister, Alice Hilder; and granddaughter, Kimberley Padgett.

Jimmie (Jim) Habrich, 84, of Beatrice formerly of Barneston died at the Kensington Tuesday morning, Jan. 18, 2011.

He was born Jan. 23, 1926 at rural Virginia and graduated from Virginia High School in 1942. He worked with Milt Fisher in Oketo, Kan. as a sharecropper. He married Juanita Cooley in 1948 at the Blue Springs Methodist Church.

He then owned and operated his own farm in the Barneston/Oketo, Kan. area until retiring and moving to Beatrice in 2006. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 25 of Oketo and the Barneston American Legion.

First and foremost he loved his family. He also enjoyed fishing, cattle, woodworking, dancing, Rex - his dogs and he could fix anything.

Survivors include one daughter, Sandy Bartels and husband Mike of Hickman; two sons, Ron Habrich and wife Lee of Canby, Oregon and Steve Habrich and wife Vickie of West Columbia, S.C.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Beulah Hinman of Beatrice; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Mary Fiala Habrich; his wife, Juanita who died Aug. 3, 1977; and three brothers, Leonard, Frank, Jr., and Alvin Habrich.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011 at Fox Funeral Home of Beatrice with Pastor Jack Magness officiating. Burial will be at the Barneston Cemetery of Barneston.

Woodrow C. Svoboda

Woodrow C. Svoboda, age 92 years, of Wymore died Sunday morning, July 11, 2010 at the Wymore Good Samaritan Center. He was born Nov. 18, 1917 near Virginia to James and Josephine (Blaker) Svoboda, and moved to Barneston at the age of two years. He attended Barneston grade school. He later made his home with John and Helen (Blaker) Goes. Woodrow was the “round town” handyman for Wymore, and for many years, mowed lawns in the area before moving to the Good Samaritan Center. His greatest hobby was tinkering with anything from lawn mower engines to building bird houses.

Woodrow is survived by a sister, Irma Wallace of Heartwell, Georgia; by a niece, Janet Mohrmann of Lincoln; by two nephews, Tim Svoboda of Marysville, KS and Jim Wallace of Heartwell, Georgia; and by his guardian, Rod Goes of Wymore. He was preceded in death by his parents, by his twin brother, Wilson Svoboda; by an infant brother, Edward Svoboda; and by a brother, Arnold Svoboda.

Helen Rose Prebyl Leseberg

Helen Rose Prebyl Leseberg, age 80 years, was born in Odell on January 6, 1929 to George and Sophia (Novotny) Prebyl. She died Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009 peacefully in her sleep at the Clarkson Hospital in Omaha after a long courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. She spent her childhood in Odell and was a 1946 graduate of Odell High School. On January 22, 1947 Helen married Harold P. Leseberg at Hanover, KS and they farmed near Bremen until 1955 when they moved to Barneston where they raised their seven children. Helen lived in Barneston until the time of her death. In 1967 Helen began working at the Campbell Soup Factory in Tecumseh and continued working there for seventeen years, retiring in 1984. Helen enjoyed gardening and her handiwork of all kinds. She made many beautiful quilts and needle work pieces, using them as personal gifts for her children, grandchildren, and friends.

Helen is survived by seven children, Connie Searcey and her husband Gail of Auburn; Larry Leseberg and his wife Terry of Seneca, KS; Kenneth Leseberg and his wife Linda of East Camden, Arkansas; Judy Post and her special friend David Waugh of Osage, Missouri; Lois Oden and her husband Wesley, and Terry “Ace” Leseberg, all of Beatrice; and Joyce "Pete" Foster of Bellevue; by ten grandchildren, Dustin and Chad Searcey; Stephanie Bruna; Stacy Rogers; Dr. Sarah Henry; Brenda Schultz; Brian Post; and Curtis, Cameron, and Kimberly Oden; by two step grandsons, Dennis and Robert Gaffney; by 10 great grandchildren and two step great grandchildren. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, George and Sophia (Novotny) Prebyl; by her husband, Harold Leseberg on January 28, 1994; by an infant daughter, Ruth Ann; and by a granddaughter, Kristina Jo Leseberg.

Jeanette Ellis Brucker

WYMORE, Neb. -- Jeanette Brucker, 85, Wymore, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at a Wymore nursing home.

Mrs. Brucker farmed in several communities in Kansas and Arkansas with her husbands. She also wrote a "Sunnyside News" column for the Wymore Arbor State in the 1960s and '70s and was published regularly in the "Farm Wife Journal."

She was born March 17, 1915, in Jewell County, Kan., the daughter of Murray and Margaret Moore Ellis. She grew up in Jewell County and graduated from Frankfort High School in 1933.

Mrs. Brucker was a member of the Wymore Church of Christ and the Christian Builders Sunday School class. She also was a member of Violet Chapter No. 105, Order of Eastern Star, Wymore.

She married John W. Sunderland in 1936. He died in July 1952. She married Ralph Brucker on Oct. 4, 1953. He died Oct. 8, 1991. She also was preceded in death by a son, Walter Joseph Sunderland, in May 1940.

Survivors include five daughters, Judith Sunderland-Yorki, Bellingham, Wash., Janet Sunderland, Overland Park, Jean Sunderland, Hawi, Hawaii, Julia Ellis, Redmond, Ore., and Jolene Slewitzke, Eugene, Ore.; a son, Jack Sunderland, Topeka; 14 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Wymore Church of Christ. Burial will be in the Barneston Cemetery. Order of Eastern Star services will be conducted by Violet Chapter No. 105. Mrs. Brucker will lie in state from 1 to 9 p.m. Saturday and from 12:30 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Laughlin-Hoevet Funeral Home, Wymore.

The family suggests memorials to the Wymore Church of Christ or the Wymore Good Samaritan Center.

Gary Wayne Husa

Gary Wayne Husa was born in McCook, Sept. 13, 1941, and went home to be with the Lord Sunday, Oct. 10, 2010, in Dallas, Texas, at the age of 69.

Gary is survived by his wife of 43 years, Mary Esther Cake Husa of the home; children, Barbara Husa Lindstrom, husband G. Mikael Lindstrom; and grandchildren, Kajsa Esther Lindstrom and G. Xander Lindstrom of Clarksville, Ark.; son, Benjamin Carl Husa and wife Kimberly Kennedy Husa of Dallas, Texas; brothers, Donald L. Husa, wife Rose Marie, and nephew, Donald of Ocean Township, N.J., and Kendall Gene Husa, wife Julie; and niece, Morgan Taylor Husa of Dallas, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin Carl Husa and Olga Klima Husa.

Graveside Services for Gary Wayne Husa, of Irving, Texas, will be held at the Barneston Cemetery at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, 2010.

Delbert C. Kirkendoll

Delbert C. Kirkendoll, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kirkendoll, was born near Dayton, Wis., on September 8, 1883, and passed away at the home of his son, LaVern at Blue Springs on August 28, 1945, at 3:30 p.m. at the age of 61 years, 11 months and 20 days. He came to Nebraska with his parents in 1892.

He was united in marriage to Miss Julia Donahue of Burchard, Nebr., on January 5, 1910. To this union were born two children, one son, LaVern and one daughter, Mrs. Ruby Wright.

He had a paralytic stroke on December 8, 1940, and had been bedfast ever since. Through his long confinement he remained cheerful, and had a pleasant word for everyone.

He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Julia, one son, LaVern of Blue Springs, and one daughter, Mrs. Ruby Wright of Lincoln, and one sister, Mrs. James Gillispie of Sharpsburg, Iowa, and a host of other relatives and friends. Serives were held at the Miller Funeral Home August 31, at 2:30, with the Rev. Harold Snow in charge, and interment was in the Barneston cemetery.

Jesse M. Kirkendoll

Jesse M. Kirkendoll dies at the age of 65.

MARYSVILLE, Kan.- Jesse M. Kirkendoll, 65, died Saturday afternoon in a Marysville hospital. He was born Sept. 12, 1898, at Oketo, Kansas.

Mr. Kirkendoll was a retired employee of the Union Pacific Railroad.

Surviving are his widow, Mary Edith, five daughters, two sons, three step-daughters and several grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wed. at 2 p.m. from Knisley Chapel, Marysville, with the Rev. Fred Holmes officiating. Burial will be in the Barneston cemetery, Barneston.

Johann H. Ottersberg Sr., 68, Davey, formerly of the Wymore area, died Monday night, Oct. 11, 2004, at his home. He was born April 19, 1936, on a farm near Filley. He drove a truck for many years and then was on the maintenance staff of Cook's Family Foods until his retirement. He married Phyllis Jean Zvolanek on Oct. 17, 1969, at Pawnee City. He lived at Bennet for several years, and then lived at Wymore and in Kansas before moving to Lincoln where he resided for four years, and then to Davey, where he has lived for the past year. His hobbies included flea marketing, fishing, hunting, playing bingo and cards, visiting with friends and family and he enjoyed a sense of humor.

Survivors: son, Johann H. Ottersberg Jr. and wife Sarah of Davey; daughters, Melanie Christie of Beatrice, Lesa Ottersberg of Davey, Sheri Nuhn and husband Dan of Manhattan, Kan.; brother, Brunie Ottersberg of Lincoln; sister, Alma Hunkle of Beatrice; several grandchildren; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eilert and Marie (Buhr) Ottersberg; his wife, Phyllis (April 2, 1996); a brother, Eilert Jr.

Funeral: 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, Laughlin-Hoevet Funeral Home, Ninth and K streets, Wymore, Clayton Lundstedt officiating. Burial: Barneston Cemetery, Barneston. The body will lie in state at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Thursday until the time of service Saturday. Memorials established with the funeral home in charge.
