Donald E. Miller
Donald E. "Don" Miller, 75 years of age, of Cortland, Nebraska passed away peacefully Saturday morning, October 4, 2008 at his home. He was born on April 1, 1933 in Norfolk, Nebraska to Ernest & Ethel (Barritt) Miller. Don served in the Army during Korea from 1953 - 1955. He married Ann Fowler on October 13, 1974 in Hutchinson, Kansas. He was a Truck Driver and Warehouse Manager for 35 years for Nash Finch Company. He was also a Security Officer for Windstream. Don was a member of the American Legion Post #16 in Norfolk, NE. He was an avid Husker fan and enjoyed golfing, Cubs baseball, woodworking, crossword puzzles, reading, playing poker on the computer, baking cookies, spending time with family, the 4th of July and playing with his two dogs, Joe and Millie.
Don is survived by his wife: Ann Miller; 3 sons: Dennis & Janet Miller of Norfolk, NE, Mark & Rhonda Miller of Norfolk, NE, Mike & Kim Shambaugh-Miller of Lincoln, NE; 8 daughters: Debra & Dale Schwartz of Omaha, NE, Gail Miller of Beatrice, NE, Linda & Bob Moser of Elgin, NE, Alix McKenna of Louisville, KY, Nancy Alexander of Madison, NE, Brenda & Byron Yung of Lincoln, NE, Janis Masters of Lincoln, NE, Doni & Todd Douglass of Cortland, NE; 26 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; a brother: Ken & Linda Miller of Norfolk, NE; a sister: Elaine & Ken Werner of Norfolk, NE; several nieces and nephews; 2 aunts: Dorothy Reigle and Margaret Sunderman; an uncle: William Miller; a great aunt: Jennie West. He was preceded in death by his parents: Ernest & Ethel (Barritt) Miller.
In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established to Christ Schools in Lincoln, NE with the Griffiths Hovendick Chapel in Charge. Interment will be in the Cortland Cemetery in Cortland, NE. The body will lie in state Tuesday from 1 - 9 PM at the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice, NE.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM Wednesday, October 8, 2008, at the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice, NE with Pastor Duncan McLellan officiating. Military Graveside Services will be provided by the American Legion Post #253 in Cortland, NE with Grandson Justin Leikam of the US Navy presenting the flag to his grandmother. The family has requested that the public wear business casual attire to the service.
Lester "Bob" Doolittle
Lester “Bob” Doolittle, 91, of Cortland, died Thursday, April 1, 2010. Born September 6, 1918 near Firth, NE. Graduated from Cortland High School. Retired from Cushman. Enjoyed gardening and candy making. He was married to Maxine H. (Bailey) Doolittle on May 20, 1943 in Ellis, Nebraska. They Lived and farmed in rural Cortland.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Tom and Carol of Gretna; Gary and Kathy & Steve and Faye all of Lincoln; Daryl and Debbie of Cortland and son, Terry all of Cortland, Seven Grandchildren, Amy(Steve)Johansson, Angela(Russ)McFarling, Amber Doolittle, Cory Doolittle, Kendra(Dustin)Garrels, Amanda(Mike) Christenson and Holly Doolittle. Five great grandchildren, Michael, Maxwell and Mathias Johansson & Kaeden and Bailey Christenson. One brother Henry (Mildred) Doolittle. One sister Audrey (Wilfred) DeVries. One sister-in-law Eileen Price & many Nieces and Nephews.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine who died in 2003 after 60 years of marriage; parents, Charles and Viola (Smith) Doolittle; brother, Burton; Sister, Charlotte (Walter) Goggins.

Dale C. Peterson, 77, Cortland, Neb., died Wednesday, July 7, 2010, in Firth. Born March 2, 1933 in Milaca, Minnesota to Emil and Sadie (Bowerman) Peterson. Ret. Carpenter. Member Eagles Club. Enjoyed fishing, watching sports, especially the Minnesota Vikings and Twins and taking family vacations.

Alice-Leone Boesinger
Alice-Leone Ambler Boesiger died at her home in rural Firth on November 10, 2014, aged 99 years, 6 months and 41 days. She was born April 23, 1915, at the home of her parents, S.J. & Helen (Holden) Ambler, in Weeping Water, Nebraska, the youngest of four children. She graduated from the Weeping Water High School in 1933 and worked at the Weeping Water Corn/Hog office before graduating from Lincoln School of Commerce. She then worked for Standard Insurance until her marriage to Donald F. Boesiger of rural Firth, son of F. J. & Maude (Sergeant) Boesiger. They were married at her parents home on January 21, 1943. They farmed the two quarters of Pine Grove Stock Farm with his parents. Donald and Alice-Leone lived on the home place, Pine Grove Stock Farm, at 3400 Pella Road from 1950 until his death on November 27, 1999; Alice-Leone continued living there until her death.
Alice-Leone was confirmed in the First Congregational Church of Weeping Water where she was organist starting at the age of thirteen. After her marriage, she was organist and director of various choirs at the Pilgrim Congregational Church, now Cortland United Church, in Cortland, NE, retiring from the organ bench after 50+ years when macular degeneration made it impossible for her to read music. She was a member of the Women's Fellowship, Venus Chapter #49 - Order of the Eastern Star, Merry Mixers Extension Club, Wilber/Beatrice Chapter of VIPS (Visually Impaired Peer Support), and the Beatrice Chapter of Sewing For Babies.
She loved flowers, especially African violets and orchids, was adept in a variety of needlework and crafts, an avid reader, and a dedicated voter. Alice-Leone was very proud to be able to attend the 2014 ceremony at the Lancaster County Fair when Pine Grove Stock Farm was named a Century Farm along with all her children and her nephew, Earl Latshaw and his family, who have done the farming since 1994.
She is survived by Pamela who has lived with her parents since 1998, Donna Mankin (Mrs. Charles) of Gillette, WY, Fredrick & Barbara of Martell, NE, Sue and Don Landau of Waverly, IA; grandchildren Andres Boesiger of Wahoo, NE, Elise Schuster & Nate Treadwell of New York City, NY, Alexis Schuster of New York City, NY, Zanna Boesiger of Friend, NE, great-grandchildren Ana, Abigail, Jasmine & Isaiah Boesiger, Hailey Kreitzer, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Donald F., parents S.J. & Helen Ambler, parents-in-law F.J. & Maude Boesiger, siblings Marjory Norris Cole, Doris Coppinger and Herbert Ambler and their spouses, son-in-law Charles Mankin, sister-in-law Madalyne Boesiger Latshaw, niece Barbara Nichols and nephew Neal Norris.

Mary Jane Bonebright
Mary Jane Bonebright of Lincoln, Nebraska went to be with her family above on Monday, March 16, 2020. Mary was born August 22, 1946 to Carl and Louise Bonebright of Cortland, NE. In her youth Mary enjoyed working in the family business, Bonebright's Grocery. Upon graduation from Cortland High, she earned her cosmetology certification and worked in the salon business in Lincoln for many years. Mary then graduated with an Associate’s Degree from SCC. She retired from Senior Technology. Mary had been a member of the Cortland, NE United Church and Heritage Presbyterian Church in Lincoln. She had been actively involved in Eastern Star and American Legion Auxiliary in Cortland and Phi Beta Phi Sorority in Lincoln for most of her adult life.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents Carl and Louise Bonebright, brother John P. Bonebright, and brother-in-law, Randy Hiatt.
She is survived by sisters, Sally (Earl) Ward of Indiana, Eloise Hiatt, and Luci (Kent) Prier of Lincoln and brother David B. (Velaine) Bonebright of Alabama. She leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews, grand niece, grand nephews, best friends, and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Lincoln Humane Society in Mary's honor. No services are planned at this time.
Alice Martha DeVries
Alice Martha DeVries, 91, of Cortland, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2016. She was born Jan. 20, 1924, in Saunders County, Nebraska.
She is survived by children, Duane (Ann), Fred (Betty), Larry, Stephanie (Don), Kristin, Forrest (Robin), Althea (Dan), Branch (Marilynn), 21 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by husband, Donald, sisters, Adeline and Wilma.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, at Cortland United Church, Cortland. Gathering and luncheon following the service. Memorials are suggested to the family for future designation.

Forrest R. DeVries
Forrest was born on August 21, 1956 in Beatrice, Neb. He is the son of Don and Alice DeVries. He grew up in Cortland, Neb. and graduated from Norris High School. He attended UNL for one year and worked at BNSF in Lincoln for 42 years.
Forrest is survived by his wife, Robin S. (Cooper) DeVries. The couple celebrated 14 years of marriage on July 4, 2017. Forrest had five daughters, Heather DeVries with her children, Kailyn and Colin, all of Lincoln; Crystal DeVries of Colorado; Jayme Cerny with husband, Steve, and their children, Hadlee and Cooper, all of Cortland; Kindra Gates with husband, Jay, and their children, Jaxson and Landri, all of Lincoln; and Amber Gamez and her children, GiAnna, Milan and Cannon, all of Firth. Forrest is also survived by Roger Olsen with wife, Michelle, and their children, Hazen, Savannah, Tucker, Wyatt and Winston, all of Firth; as well as his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Don and Delores Cooper of Firth.
Forrest was preceded in death by his parents, Don and Alice DeVries. He was one of eight kids: his brothers, Duane with wife, Ann; Fred with wife, Betty; Larry; and Branch with wife, Marilynn; his sisters, Stephanie with husband, Don; Kristin; and Althea with special friend, Dan. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Friday, July 21, 2017 from 6-8 p.m. and a celebration of life will take place on Saturday, July 22, 2017 at 10 a.m. All services will be held at the Cortland Community Center, located at W. Norman E. DeVries
Norman E. DeVries, age 82, of Cortland, died on Saturday, August 13, 2016, in Adams. He was born on July 26, 1934, in Cortland, to Fred and Emma (Bierstedt) DeVries. He married Betty Skidmore on March 28, 1958.
Norm is survived by his sons, Dan DeVries of Lincoln, Nathan (Lori) DeVries of Cortland, grandchildren, Ryan (Lauri) Lewis of Williamsburg, Va., Maggie (Phil) Onwiler of Ashland, five great-grandchildren, Presley Lewis, Amelia, Joseph, Clara and Isaiah Onwiler, brother and sister-in-law, Wilfred and Audrey DeVries of Cortland and brother-in-law, Robert Peterson of Denver. He was preceded in death by his wife Betty, parents, brothers, Eldon, Donald, Everett, Leland, sisters, Winifred Peterson and Gretchen DeVries.

Kaylean Marie Gentry, 30, of Firth, passed away Monday, March 29, 2021. She was born on April 2, 1990 to Frank and Lonnie (Waline) Poskochil in Lincoln. Kay enjoyed the outdoors; hunting and fishing with Brandon, she had a love for animals, classic cars, pin up, floral and crafts. She was a people person, never meeting a stranger. Her family was most important to her.
Kay is survived by her husband, Brandon; children, Liam, Annabelle, Barrett, Nikolaus, Emmitt; parents, Frank (Lonnie) Poskochil; bonus mom, Dawn Cary; siblings, Annie (Lance) Oerman, Kacie Poskochil, Shelby (Josh) Howton, Frannie Poskochil, Frankie Poskochil, Kevin Cary, Ally Cary, Matthew Cary, Jake Cary, many nieces, nephews and extended family members.

CAZENOVIA - Marcelene May Hall, 85, of Excelsior Springs, Mo., formerly of Cazenovia, passed away on Friday, Nov. 29, 2013, at Liberty Hospital.

Beverly A. Hawk
Beverly A. Hawk, 82 of Syracuse, passed away at home on July 11, 2022. She was born on August 5, 1939, to Branson & Maureen (Rader) Schell in Cortland, NE. Bev graduated from Osceola High School where she was a popular student. On March 27, 1960, she married James Olsen and to this union Karen & Brian were born. They later divorced after 20 years, but stayed friends. She then married Donald Hawk on November 5, 1989, in Lincoln.
Bev worked as a care giver in many capacities, including taking care of people in their own home. Her family was the most important part of her life and she dedicated as much time as she could to be with them. She especially enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s events and traveling to see her family. Her other passion was as an advocate for feral cats and took care of them for 20 years. This including paying to have them spayed or neutered. Bev was also a member of the United Methodist Church and enjoyed reading.
She is survived by her brother Richard (Pat) Schell; daughter Karen Driever; grandsons Jasper (Kelsey) Keran, Bradley (Taylor) Driever, Kelson Driever; son Brian (Andrea) Olsen; grandsons Luke Olsen & Sean Olsen; great grandchildren Brycen Keran, Eldon Keran, Cooper Driever, Levi Hansen, Karsen Driever, Jaxon Driever, Brindley Driever, Easton Driever; daughter Lisa (Mike) Schmidt; also many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Donald Hawk; former husband James Olsen and siblings Robert Schell, Barbara Schell and Raymond Schell.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 15 at 2:00 p.m. at the Fusselman-Allen-Harvey Funeral Home in Syracuse. Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to the start of the service. Burial will follow immediately after the service in the Cortland Cemetery.

Theodore E. Knop
Theodore Elias Knop was born December 27, 2020, in Lincoln, Nebraska to Rylee Knop and Josh Hauser and passed away on Friday, April 23, 2021 in Pleasant Dale at the age of 3 months and 27 days.
Theodore was born with dark blue eyes and a headful of beautiful blonde hair. He loved watching his older sister and enjoyed when his family played music, such as classic rock. Theodore was such a happy baby and was excited whenever he would try and communicate with those around him. He liked playing with fuzzy-stuffed animals and was seen everywhere with his soft blue blanket with dinosaurs on it that his aunt, Tori, gave him. We will miss his wonderful smile.
Survivors include his parents, Rylee Knop and Josh Hauser, his older sister, Isabella Blackburn, maternal grandparents, Sheri Rinne, James Brown, paternal grandfather, Brian Knop, great-grand parents, Dennis and Patricia Gentry, Larry and Jeanne Rinne, great-great-grandmother, Lois Walton, many aunts, uncles, great aunts and uncles, and other relatives.
Graveside services are at Cortland Cemetery, Cortland, at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 29, 2021. A visitation will be held on Wednesday evening at Lauber Funeral Home, Milford, from 6-8:00 p.m.
Eunice F. Madsen
Eunice Fern Douglass Madsen, 97, of Lincoln was called home on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014, at Legacy Estates in Lincoln. She was born at Rockford, Neb. on Jan. 22, 1918, to Clyde W. and Elizabeth Hahn Douglass.
She was baptized and confirmed in 1931. She attended school in Rockford and graduated from Cortland High School and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Nebraska Wesleyan University being elected to the Psi Chi Honorary Psychology Fraternity and the Pi Gamma Mu Honorary Social Sciences Fraternity. She taught country school at Grandview School in Gage County for two years and she taught in the Portland Oregon Public Schools from 1946 to 1980. She also earned a master's degree from Portland State University in Speech and Hearing Sciences (with Certificate of Clinical Competency) serving as a Speech Pathologist in the Portland schools. She married Clare G Madsen Aug. 16, 1952 in Portland. Eunice loved her cats, liked to travel, enjoyed hunting rocks with Clare, and was a very active ball room dancer, competing across the globe.
Her survivors include brother, Paul A Douglass of Martell; nephews and nieces, Richard L Douglass (Maree) of Cortland; Rodney W Douglass (Eileen) of Los Alamos, N.M.; Joel R Douglass (Jerilyn) of Martell and Jeannene K. Douglass of Lincoln; grand-nieces and nephews, Todd L Douglass (Doni) of Cortland; David R Douglass (Anna) of South Pasadena, Calif.; Brian E Douglass (Ashley) of Fayetteville, Ark.; Jeffrey R Douglass of Waverly; Erin M Douglass Farnsworth (Tyler) of Kansas City, Mo.; Megan M Douglass of Ogallala and four great- great-nephews, and her precious "Kitty," Angel.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Clare, her brother Edward T Douglass, sisters-in-law Doris Madsen Winters, Viola Schultz Douglass, Vera Miltenberger Douglass, Carol Shaw Douglass, and Jean Hill Douglass.

Joyce E. Moormeier
Joyce E. Moormeier, 86, passed away Friday, Feb 14, 2014, in Lenexa, Kan. Joyce was born Jan. 13, 1928, in Snohomish, Wash., to Benjamin and Lyda Hoggarth.
She married Neil Moormeier on Nov. 20, 1954. Neil and Joyce raised their family in Omaha, where she was a homemaker and he was employed as a manager with Snap-on Tools. She enjoyed golfing and family. In retirement, Joyce and Neil wintered in Palm Springs. In 2007, they moved to Lenexa, Kan. to be near family.
She is survived by her children, Jill Moormeier, Reed (Jayne) Moormeier, and Tim (Diana) Moormeier; grandchildren, Ben, Brooke, Jack and Emily; brother, Bill Hoggarth.
She was preceded in death by her husband; two sisters; and a brother.

Katherine Moormeier
Katherine Moormeier, 94, of Cortland, passed away peacefully Sunday morning, Oct. 2, 2011, at the Gold Crest Retirement Center in Adams. She was born on Jan. 23, 1917, at rural Cortland to Rudolph and Edith (Albers) Hansel. She married Leslie R. Moormeier on Jan. 31, 1934, at Beatrice and they lived near Hallam, Princeton and Firth before moving to the family farm near Cortland in 1945. She was a member of the Cortland United Church. She enjoyed gardening, embroidering, cross-stitching and quilting.
Survivors include two daughters, Sharon Holsing of Beatrice and Joyce McManus and husband Kenneth of Ocala, Fla.; four grandchildren, Linda Watt and husband Malcolm of Omaha, Gary Jurgens and wife Janice of Beatrice, Terry Jurgens and wife Kristen of Odell and Deborah Mays and husband Michael of Cortland; 10 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Bethel Waltke of Beatrice and DeLoris McCown of Moreno Valley, Calif.; numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Leslie, who died on July 24, 1999; beloved daughter Shirley Jurgens, who died Feb. 17, 2010; son-in-law John Jurgens, who died Feb. 13, 2000; friend Lloyd Sexton, who died July 10, 2010; two infant grandchildren Timothy Holsing, who died March 13, 1965, and Lori Holsing, who died June 2, 1970; four sisters and three brothers.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2011, at the Cortland United Church with Pastor Casey Karges officiating. Burial will be at the Cortland Cemetery. Neil E. Moormeier
Neil E. Moormeier, age 87, passed away December 14, 2011 in Lenexa, Kan. Neil was born October 24, 1924 in Cortland to Frederick and Ella Moormeier. He served our country in the U.S. Army during W.W.II, and married Joyce Hoggarth on November 20, 1954. Neil and Joyce raised their family in Omaha, where he was employed as a manager with Snap-on Tools. He enjoyed golfing and skeet-shooting. In retirement, Neil and Joyce wintered in Palm Springs. In 2007, Neil and Joyce moved to Lenexa, Kan. to be near family.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce; his children, Jill Moormeier, Reed (Jayne) Moormeier, and Tim (Diana) Moormeier; grandchildren, Ben, Brooke, Jack, and Emily; his brothers, Norman and Paul Moormeier. He was preceded in death by five brothers and a sister.

Delmar A. Oltman
Delmar Anton Oltman, 89, of Cortland, passed away June 27, 2013, in Lincoln, Neb. He was born Feb. 11, 1924, on the family farm to Jacob and Florence (Smith) Oltman.
He was a current member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Hickman, Neb. He graduated from Hallam High School in 1942 and won several awards in track.
Delmar was a lifetime farmer, farming the family farm. He raised chickens, pigs, cattle and sheep. He was honored with the AKSARBEN Pioneer Farm Award June 1, 1981, in recognition of farming the family farm for 100 years.
Delmar was one of the early farmers to introduce planting soybeans and sold seed soybeans in the Cortland and Hallam area. He was featured in several articles in the Nebraska Farmer magazine for his innovative farming methods.
Delmar served on the school board of Star School 53 and was an active member of the Egg Association.
Delmar married Berdina Brolhorst on January 19, 1947, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Wilbur, Neb. They have 2 children, Larry and Virginia.

Keith W. Pester
Keith Wells Pester 75 of Beatrice, NE passed away on May 15, 2018. Keith was born May 28, 1942 Lincoln, NE to Wendell and Frances (Wells) Pester. He had an older brother Kenneth and sister DeLaine. He graduated from Lincoln Northeast High School in 1960 and served 2 years in the Nebraska National Guard following High School.
Keith married Lee Etta Cook June 4th, 1966. They settled on an acreage near Princeton, NE and had three sons Dean, Dale, and Harold. Later they moved north of Lincoln where Keith grew up and he began farming full-time. After eventually being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, Keith had to give up farming and they moved to another acreage near Pickrell and away from “the big city" growth of Lincoln. Keith was a skilled carpenter, cabinet maker, and farmer. He seemed happiest when on a tractor, seeing his family at gatherings, or visiting with old friends. Keith enjoyed and competed in many activities including horse shows, rodeos, square dancing, saddle club and raising livestock.
Survivors include wife Lee Etta Pester of Beatrice, Sons Dean (Michelle) Pester of Cortland, NE, Dale (Tammy) Pester of Unadilla, NE, Harold (Beth) Pester of Seward, NE. Eileen B. Price
Eileen (Bailey) Price, 102, went home to her Lord on April 15, 2023. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother who dedicated her life to serving her family and her Savior.
Born to JL and Elsie (Henderson) Bailey on February 10, 1921, Eileen grew up on a farm near Cortland, graduated from Sunnyside rural school and Beatrice High in 1940 before attending Peru Teachers College.
Upon graduation, she taught school in Lancaster and Gage counties for seven years, including at Sunnyside School in rural Firth, NE.
Eileen married R. Jean Price on May 28, 1947, and moved to the farm she would call home for the next 75 years to farm and raise their family of five children. She was an active member of her community, serving as Treasurer of the Cortland Cemetery for 15 years, as well as several years volunteering for Sewing for Babies. Eileen was a former member of United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School and Bible School and was a member of United Methodist Women’s Society. She was a current member of Cortland United Church, where she spent many years as a member of the Cortland United Church Women’s organization, as well as Young at Heart.
Eileen is survived by her children, James Price (Judeen), Robert Price (Kay), Ronald Price, Joyce Hurst, and Janet Denison (Scott). She also leaves on Earth 12 grandchildren along with their spouses who she loved as her own grandkids, 18 great grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Waiting for Eileen’s arrival in Heaven were her husband R. Jean Price, parents JL and Elsie, an infant sister, sisters Dorothy Bailey and Maxine Doolittle, brothers Emmett and Kenneth Bailey, aunts, uncles, and dear friends.

Lillian E. Schultz
Lillian E. Schultz, age 102, of Fremont died Tuesday, July 9, 2019, at home.
Lillian was born Jan. 8, 1917, in Cortland, Nebraska, to Paul and Anna (During) Schultz. She grew up in Cortland, graduated from Cortland Public Schools and Nebraska Wesleyan University. She received her Master's Degree from Northwestern University. Lillian taught at Central School, District 50 of Gage County (south of Cortland), Milford, Tekamah and finished her career in Fremont teaching typing and shorthand for 34 years, retiring from Fremont High School in 1980.
After Lillian retired she enjoyed volunteering at May Museum and traveling the world with her sister, Pearl. Together they also taught English as a Second Language and also a U.S. History class for those taking their citizenship test. Lillian was a member of Fremont First UMC.
Survived by her family, Rod and Eileen Douglass, Jeannene Douglass, Brian, Ashley and Soren Douglass, Megan and John Aylward.
She was preceded in death by her sisters, Viola Douglass and Pearl Schultz; and half brother, Jacob Schultz.

Pearl Schultz
Pearl was born at Cortland, Nebraska on March 20, 1915 to Paul and Anna (During) Schultz. She graduated from Cortland High School in 1931 and continued her education at Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Graduate work was done at the University of Nebraska, the University of Colorado at Boulder, and Denver University. She earned a Master of Music degree from Northwestern University at Evanston, Illinois.
She was a career teacher, having taught in the public schools at District 4 in Gage County, Nebraska and also in Campbell, Tekamah, Columbus, and Fremont.
After retiring, she did volunteer work for Meals on Wheels, the Low Income Ministry, and for nineteen years was a docent at the Dodge County Museum. Since 1988, she tutored Spanish speaking adults in English.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Fremont, having joined the Cortland Methodist Church in 1923. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women and the Mary Circle. And she was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the Fremont Area Retired School Personnel, and for more than fifty years a member of Venus Chapter #49 Order of Eastern Star of Cortland.
She is survived by a sister, Lillian Schultz, of Fremont, a niece, Jeannene Douglass of Lincoln, a nephew, Dr. Rod Douglass and wife Eileen of Los Alamos, NM, a grand niece, Megan Douglass of Lincoln, and a grand nephew, Brian Douglass and wife Ashley of Albuquerque, NM.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother and sister-in-law, and a sister.
The funeral service will be 10 AM Friday (July 29, 2011) at the First United Methodist Church in Fremont with the Rev. Greg Hall officiating. The committal will be in the Cortland Cemetery in Cortland, Nebraska at 1:30 PM Friday. Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church.

Jacqueline Sue Shewey, age 69, of Cortland, passed away on Saturday, September 25, 2021. Jacqueline was born October 6, 1951 to Lambert and Dorothy Holden. Kenneth C. Spidell
Kenneth C. ("KC") Spidell was born on December 16, 1961 in Lincoln, NE to Charles C. Spidell and Lola M. (Bonebright) Spidell. He was raised in Cortland, NE and attended Norris High School in Firth, NE. He is survived by his siblings, Robert Spidell, Eliese Espinosa, Freida Rose, Linda Spidell, Joyce Antonson, Janet Admire, Jane Hetrick, and Ernest ("EJ") Spidell, as well as many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by both parents and his sister, Rebecca Humann. He passed on March 22, 2023 after a long battle with cancer. Lola Mae Spidell
Lola Mae Spidell, 84, passed away April 11, 2014, at her home in Cortland, Neb. Born Dec. 3, 1929, to John and Martha (Potthoff) Bonebright in Hallam. Lola was an active member in her community. She graduated from Cortland High School. June 1, 1952 she married Charles C. Spidell. Lola worked in the telephone industry since the age of 9 and finished the last 23 years of her career as a service representative for the Lincoln Telephone Company where she retired in 1995. Lola was an active member of the Cortland United Church. She was involved in many organizations such as Eastern Star, Cortland Home Members Extension Club, OES, Bible Study, and the Cortland Cemetery Association.

Raymond Thomsen
Raymond Thomsen departed this life on Thursday, December 3rd, 2020, at his home in Lincoln. He is the son of John and Maria (Thomsen) Thomsen. Raymond was born January 9, 1925 at Filley, Nebraska, and was baptized on November 1925 at Filley United Methodist Church. He was raised on a farm and graduated from Filley High School in 1942 and was part of the Class C State Baseball Championship team. Raymond married Lorene Wagner on December 23rd, 1945. They farmed in the Filley, Wilber, Blue Springs, and Diller areas. Born to this union were three daughters, Linda, Joyce, and Lori. In 1972, Ray and Lorene moved to Cortland, Nebraska. Ray worked at the Nebraska Department of Roads for seventeen years. He enjoyed farming and feeding livestock, loved playing baseball, men’s softball, and golf, enjoyed watching all sports, was an avid Husker Fan and season ticket holder for over 50 years. Ray also coached the Cortland girls’ softball team for twelve years. He was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church in Beatrice and Cortland Masonic Lodge. After the death of his first wife, Lorene, Ray married Magdalene “Peg” Hahn on June 15th, 1984 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Johnson, Nebraska. Together they lived in Cortland, Beatrice and Lincoln, Nebraska. Ray loved his family and extended family very much.
He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Lorene, daughter, Joyce Nippert and her husband, David, sister, Verna Mae Ewald, brothers, Julian, and Harold Thomsen.

Gretchen DeVries
The Rev. Gretchen Lucille DeVries, 81, Cortland, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2005, at The Monarch Hospice in Lincoln from cancer. She was born Dec. 18, 1923, in Cortland, the daughter of Frederich H. and Emma Marie Rosa (Bierstedt) DeVries. She graduated from Cortland Public School in 1940, and had temporary office jobs until working at Olson Construction Co. During her 16 years there, she earned a bachelor of arts degree in business administration and a master's degree in social work at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. In the summer of 1954 and 1955, she worked onboard St. John's Floating Hospital, N.Y.C. Social Agency. In 1957, she started with Girl Scouts of America in Lincoln, serving as director of summer camps, and moved to Harrisburg, Pa., to be the district director of Scouting from 1958-62. During 1962-1966, she attended the Pacific School of Religion, Calif., earning a bachelor of divinity degree. Also during this time, she was associate pastor at Fruitvale UCC church in Oakland, Calif., and was ordained in Cortland, Neb., as a UCC minister in 1966. Starting in 1967, she learned Japanese while working as a missionary of the United Church Board for World Ministries, first in Tokyo, and then in 1970 at the Asian Rural Institute in Nishinasuno, Japan. She coordinated communications with sponsors, graduates and potential students. She was ARI associate director from 1985-1990, becoming director in 1990. Her work included travels to visit graduates of ARI countries. She stayed on as director for two years after which she spent six months at ARI and six months at her home in Cortland until 2001. During furloughs in the United States, she had many teaching and preaching engagements countrywide, and was involved in many volunteer organizations during her life. Recognitions given to her included the Antoinette Brown Award in 1985. Retiring to her home in Cortland, she continued to be active in her home church, serving as church treasurer and helping write the monthly church letter. Family life was important to her, and her Himalayan cat, Tande-Boy.
Survivors: sister, Winifred M. Peterson and husband Robert of Denver; brothers, Wilfred D. DeVries and wife Audrey V., Norman E. DeVries and wife Betty E., all of Cortland; nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frederich H. and Emma Marie Rosa (Bierstedt) DeVries; brothers, Leland V., Everett G., Eldon E. and wife Ruth and Donald I. DeVries; sisters-in-law, Dorothy DeVries, Marjorie DeVries, Ruth DeVries and Alice DeVries.

Eleanor B. Cyriacks
Eleanor Berdene Cyriacks passed away December 16, 2020 at Bryan East Hospital due to complications from COVID-19. We greatly appreciated the care Eleanor received at Bryan East Hospital, Gateway Vista, Lexington Rehabilitation Center and Lancaster Rehabilitation Center.
Eleanor Berdene (Haupt) Cyriacks born 2/9/23 on a farm near Clatonia, NE. She grew up on a farm outside of Cortland, NE. She enjoyed farm life especially horseback riding. She went to Cortland, NE high school and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1940. Married Wilmer April 23, 1949 in Lincoln. She had two sons Gary and Timothy. She lived in Lincoln since 1940. She was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses 10/1/40. She certainly enjoyed attending the Lincoln congregations and attending assemblies and conventions each year. She was at the St Louis Convention and received the Children’s Book. She and her husband Wilmer were very busy in spiritual activities. Together they studied the Bible with several individual and families. She also served as a Regular Pioneer for ten years in her later life. She greatly valued the times she with the Haupt and Cyriacks families. They had many get togethers together. She treasured the many friends she had. Friends she helped and they in turn they helped her many times. They gave her great support to the end. Her friends in the truth were like family to her. She was also able to travel some also. She went to Europe twice, Alaska, Canada, Mexico and Nova Scotia. She also traveled to many places in United States including many conventions of Jehovah’s Witnesses. She enjoyed Jehovah’s creations the mountains, oceans, all of Jehovah’s creations.
Eleanor is survived by two sons and their wives. Gary & Mary and Timothy & Heather. Also two granddaughters, four grandsons and one step grandson, fourteen great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren. Eleanor is preceded in death by parents, Arthur Haupt and Pearl (Miltenberger) Haupt, husband Wilmer, brothers Harlan, Dean Haupt, sister Lois Turnbull, grandson Tyson Cyriacks.

CORTLAND - Donald Irvin DeVries, 87, Cortland, died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2003, at Saint Elizabeth Regional Medical Center, Lincoln. He was born June 23, 1916, in Cortland. He and Alice Novotny were married Aug. 14, 1945, in Wahoo. He was a lifelong home builder, a World War II veteran and past Master of Highland Lodge 194. He was a member of Cortland United Church, Eastern Star, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and American Legion.

Maxine Doolittle
CORTLAND - Maxine H. Doolittle, 84, Cortland, died Wednesday evening, May 7, 2003, at a Lincoln hospital. She was born June 22, 1918, at rural Cortland, and graduated from Beatrice High School in 1936. She received her teaching certificate from Peru State Teachers College and taught country school. She was married to Lester Doolittle on May 20, 1943, at Ellis, and they lived and farmed at rural Cortland. She was a member of the Cortland United Church and was also a member of the Ladies Group of the church. She enjoyed her family, cooking and vegetable and flower gardening.
Survivors: husband, Lester of Cortland; sons, Tom Doolittle and wife Carol of Gretna, Gary Doolittle and wife Kathy and Steve Doolittle and wife Faye, all of Lincoln, Daryl Doolittle and wife Debbie and Terry Doolittle, all of Cortland; grandchildren, Amy Johansson and husband Steve, Angela McFarling and husband Russ, Amber Doolittle, all of Gretna, Cory Doolittle and Kendra Doolittle, both of Lincoln, Amanda Doolittle of Phoenix, Ariz. and Holly Doolittle of Cortland; two great-grandchildren; sister, Eileen Price of Cortland; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Henry and Mildred Doolittle of Cortland, Charlotte Goggins of Lincoln, and Audrey and Wilfred DeVries of Cortland; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, J L Bailey and Elsie (Henderson) Bailey; sister, Dorothy Bailey; brothers, Emmett and Kenneth Bailey.

Paul A. Douglass
Paul Albert Douglass, 98, of Cortland was called home on Sunday, March 9, 2014, in Lincoln. He was born in Rockford on Feb. 4, 1916, to Clyde W. and Elizabeth Hahn Douglass.
Paul was baptized and confirmed in Rockford. He attended school in Rockford and graduated from Cortland High School.
Paul operated a Standard Oil Delivery truck out of Cortland. He farmed and was a dairyman near Martell until 1981. Paul was known for his humor and his hunting expertise. He was devoted to his cows, hunting dogs, his family and many friends.
Survivors are sons, Richard L. Douglass (Maree) of Cortland, and Joel R. Douglass (Jerilyn) of Martell; grandchildren, Todd L. Douglass (Doni) of Cortland, David R. Douglass (Anna) of South Pasadena Calif., Jeffrey R. Douglass of Waverly, Erin M. Douglass Farnsworth (Tyler) of Kansas City Mo., and four great-grandchildren, Fletcher, Reese, Charlie and Theodore; nephew, Rodney W Douglass (Eileen) of Las Alamos N.M., and niece Jeannene K. Douglass of Lincoln; grand-nephews and nieces, Brian E. Douglass (Ashley) of Fayetteville Ark., Megan M. Douglass of Ogallala.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Vera R. Miltenberger Douglass, and second wife Oma Jean Saville Hill; brother Edward T. Douglass and wives (Viola Schultz Douglass and Carol Shaw George Douglass), sister Eunice F. Madsen and Clare; and infant son, David Paul Douglass.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, March 15, 2014, at the Martell Methodist Church at 1:30 p.m. Luncheon will be held at 11:30 a.m. preceding the service. Officiating will be Pastor Heather Eads. Inurnment at the Cortland Cemetery on Memorial Day. Memorials to the Martell Methodist Church, the Cortland United Church and the Cortland Cemetery. Donald R. Hawk
Donald Robert Hawk was born on August 8, 1944 in Sharon, Pennsylvainia to Homer and Maegaretta (Saunders) Hawk. He passed away on Sunday, September 14, 2008 at the VA Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 64 years, 1 month and 6 days.
Services will be held on Thursday, September 18, 2008 at 1:00 P.M. at Fusselman-Wymore Funeral Home in Syracuse, Nebraska with Rev. Jeff Kelley officiating.
Burial will be in the Cortland Cemetery in Cortland, Nebraska.

CORTLAND - William "Bill" W. Krauter Jr., 90, Cortland, died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2003. He was born on Nov. 9, 1912, in Cortland, and was a blacksmith and a World War II Army veteran.

Dale E. Reiswig, 66, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, after a long battle with cancer. We are grateful to the Horisun Hospice team which allowed him to pass away peacefully in his own home surrounded by his family.

Charles Spidell
CORTLAND - Charles Calvin Spidell, 74, Cortland, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003. He was born July 17, 1928, in Tabor, Iowa, the son of John and Irene (Gadberry) Spidell and grew up in Nebraska City. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1947-1951, and was united in marriage to Lola Mae Bonebright on June 1, 1952. He was employed in construction, and was a truck driver and maintenance supervisor at Lincoln Air Force Base in Lincoln and at Omaha Air Base, Sheridan Inn, and Norden Laboratory.
