Prior to the formal opening of the
Seventeenth Session of the North Nebraska Annual Conference of the
Methodist Episcopal Church, the Conference Board of Examiners
convened in the auditorium of the church in Schuyler; Nebraska,
September 27, 1898, at 2:30 o'clock P. M., N. A. Martin, Chairman
of the Board, presiding.
The usual business of reviewing under-graduates
in Course of Study and other matters of the Board were attended
to.
On Tuesday evening, at 7:30 P. M., occurred the
Missionary Anniversary, D. K. Tindall presiding. The meeting was
addressed by Rev. A. J. Palmer, D. D., Corresponding Secretary of
the Missionary Society. His address was replete with valuable,
general information and special details connected with the
Missionary work.

DRAFTS. -- The Bishop announced that the Conference was authorized to draw on the Book Concern for $509, and on the Chartered Fund for $22, for the benefit of Conference claimants. The drafts were ordered.
R. R. SECRETARY. -- On motion of D. K. Tindall, Oscar Eggleston was elected Railroad Secretary.
GOSPEL IN ALL LANDS. -- On motion of A. Hodgetts, O. P. Mueller was appointed to take subscriptions for "Gospel in All Lands."
SPECIAL ORDER OF DAY. -- On motion of J. B. Maxfield, it was ordered that on Thursday morning, immediately after reading the Journal, the Conference vote by roll call on what is known as "The Rock River Conference Proposed Amendment," on lay representation in General Conference.

CONFERENCE RELATION. -- On Motion of R. W. Wilcox the cases of candidates for admission on trial, were referred to the Committee on Conference Relation. And also by request of Wm. Gorst papers pertaining to re-admission of a former member were also referred to Committee on Conference Relation.
DISTRICT ADMINISTRATION. -- Papers in the case of L. K. McNiel, in the Neligh District, and J. A. Roades, in the Grand Island District, were reported and filed with the Secretary. And the character of J. A. Roades was passed.
ANNOUNCEMENTS. --
Announcements were made and the Bishop appointed J. B. Carns to
preside at the Statistical Session in the afternoon. The doxology
was sung and the Conference, closed with the benediction by Dr.
Palmer.

STATISTICAL SESSION.
The Statistical Session convened at 2 P. M.,
J. B. Carns presiding. The devotional services were conducted by
D. W. McGregor. The roll was then called for statistics which were
handed in, and the Session adjourned with the benediction by C. N.
Dawson.
Conference convened at 8:30 A. M., Thursday, September 29, 1898, F. M. Sisson conducting devotional services, after which the Bishop took the chair. The minutes of Wednesday's Regular and Statistical Sessions were read and approved.
RESOLUTION. -- On motion of D. W. McGregor, resolutions of sympathy with our Canadian brethren in their efforts to secure statutory prohibition were passed and ordered sent to the Canadian Prohibition headquarters.
TRANSFERS. -- The following named were announced as transfers to this Conference: Benjamin B. Keister, from South America; Anthony C. Welch, from the East Ohio, and George W. Corey, from the Colorado Conference. The Bishop announced the transfer, September 14, of Wm. W. Shenk to the West Nebraska Conference, and re-transferred, September 19, to the North Nebraska Conference, and placed in studies of the third year.
INTRODUCTIONS. -- The following named brethren were introduced to the Conference: Rev. Dr. Jesse L. Hurlburt, Corresponding Secretary of the Sunday School Union and Tract Society; S. W. Gamble, of the South Kansas Conference, and also George M. Couffer, A. C. Welch, George W. Corey and B. B. Keister.
MOTION RESCINDED. -- On motion of D. K. Tindall, it was ordered that the motion by which it had previously been ordered that the vote on the "Rock River Conference Amendment Proposition" shall be taken on roll call, was rescinded, and the Conference voted on the proposition by a standing count vote, which resulted in 75 for and 5 against the proposed amendment.

Leedom, J. Charles, J. P. Yost, N. A. Martin, C. N. Dawson, G. W. Martin, H. A. Barton and J. P. Roe. The Bishop appointed C. F. Heywood, Chairman. The Secretary detailed H. A. Barton as Secretary for the Select Number. The Conference appointed G. A. Luce, J. E. Moore and Thomas Bithel as counsel for the Church, and C. M. Griffith, F. M. Sisson and David Marquette as counsel for the defense. C. F. Heywood called a meeting of the Select Number in the South basement of the church at 1 P. M.
MINUTES. -- On motion of J. B. Maxfield, the publication of the Minutes was taken up and one thousand copies were ordered printed. On motion of C. N. Dawson, J. W. Jennings was authorized to edit and publish the Minutes, and the Secretary called the roll for subscriptions. Ninety dollars and fifty cents were subscribed, and J. E. Fowler, J. F. Poucher, C. C. Cissell and Allen Bishop were appointed collectors for the same and to report to the Secretary. The Bishop addressed the Conference upon the value of the Annual Conference Minutes.

QUESTION XXII. -- "Who are Supernumerary preachers?" The Secretary announced the death of Nathaniel H. Gale, which occurred near Grenada, Colorado, June 10, 1898. The characters of the following named were passed and they were continued in the Supernumerary Relation: Samuel Cates, T. W. Owen, J. P. Roe, Bartley Blain, W. H. Carter, J. R. Gearhart and J. E. Moore. On motion of J. B. Maxfield the relation of J. H. Brooks was changed from Effective to Supernumerary.
ORDER OF THE DAY. -- On motion of J. M. Bothwell, it was ordered that immediately after the reading of the minutes Friday morning Question XXX be made the order of the day, viz: "Where shall the next Conference be held?"
QUESTION XXIII. -- "Who are Superannuated Preachers?" The characters of Jacob Adriance, D. T. Olcott, Charles Balson, C. H. Savidge, Wm. Stanner, J. L. St. Clair and H. NV. Conley were passed and their relations continued.
ADDRESS. -- Rev. Dr. Jesse L. Hurlburt addressed the Conference in the interest of the Sunday School Union and Tract Society.
RESOLUTION. -- A resolution offered by C. N. Dawson, endorsing the administration of the President, the Congress, the Army and Navy of the United States in the recent war with Spain, was adopted by a rising vote, and on motion of D. Marquette, the Secretary was instructed to send a copy of the resolution to the President.
REPORTS. -- On motion of the Secretary, supplemented with timely advice by the Bishop, it was ordered that all reports and resolutions be written in ink on uniform sized paper, on one side only, in duplicate and handed to the Secretary.
QUESTION VII. -- "Who
have been admitted into full membership?" The characters of Walter
L. Elliott, Ronald J. McKenzie and Harry G. Kemp were passed, they
reported their collections, the examiners reported their grades,
and on motion of their Presiding Elders they stood recommended for
admission into full membership and to be elected to Deacon's

Shick was passed and on motion of his Presiding Elder he was continued in studies of the second year, and the Bishop was requested to leave him without appointment to attend one of our schools. Wilcox was passed, examiners reported his grade, he was passed in his studies, but not being present to answer Disciplinary questions, he was on motion of his Presiding Elder, continued on Trial in the class of the third year, and the Bishop was requested to leave him without appointment to attend one of our schools. ANNOUNCEMENTS. -- The
Standing Committees were called, announcements made, the Bishop
appointed H. L. Powers to conduct devotional services Friday
morning and the Conference closed with the benediction by the
Bishop.

ORDER OF THE DAY. -- Question XXX, "Where shall the next Conference be held?" F. M. Sisson presented an invitation from Hanscom Park church, Omaha, and on motion of J. B. Maxfield and A. Hodgetts, the invitation was unanimously accepted.
QUESTION XI. -- The recommendations for Deacon's Orders as Local Preachers, of James G. Galloway, of Grand Island District, and Edward M. Furman, of Neligh District, were presented and action deferred.
QUESTION IV. -- "Who
have been received on Trial?" The following named were introduced
to the Conference: Edward B. King, James S. Green, John L.
Phillips, Arthur E. Fowler, the examiners reported their grades,
they were passed in their studies, the Committee on Conference
Relation reported favorable, and

on motion of the Presiding Elders they were admitted on Trial and placed in the studies of the first year, except J. S. Green conditioned on English and American Literature; J. L. Phillips on Leading Facts of American History; A. E. Fowler on English and American Literature. Dorson E. Baldwin was introduced, examiners reported his grade, the Committee on Conference Relation reported favorable, he was passed in his studies and further action was deferred. Milton H. Booth was introduced, the Committee on Conference Relation reported favorable, provided he shall first pass the required examination in studies, and on motion of the Presiding Elder he stood recommended for admission on Trial and to be placed in the studies of the first year, provided he shall pass the required examination.
INTRODUCTION. -- The following named were introduced, Chancellor D. W. C. Huntington, of the Nebraska Wesleyan University, also F. M. Esterbrook, Financial Agent, both of whom addressed the Conference in the interest of the University. The following further named were introduced: A. C. Crosthwaite, George I. Wright and T. A. Hull, of the Nebraska Conference.
CANVASSERS. -- On request of Chancellor Huntington, R. J. McKenzie and A. L. Kellogg were appointed canvassers to solicit funds to purchase a gymnasium hall for the University, it being the purpose of the Trustees of the University to purchase the vacated Baptist church building in University Place for such purpose.
REPORTS. -- The following named committees read reports which were adopted: Sunday School Union and Tracts, Missionary, Auditing, Conference Relation, W. H. & W. F. M. S., Sabbath Observance, District Conference Records, Church Extension, Bible Cause, State of the Church, Periodicals. The President of the Conference Epworth League read a report also, which was adopted.
MONUMENT. -- F. M. Sisson made report showing expenses all paid in the erection of a monument at the grave of Thomas P. Donnelly.
INTRODUCTIONS. -- Mr. Konezeski, collector for the Western Methodist Book Concern, was introduced.
MISSIONARY
MONEY. -- The Bishop addressed the
Conference in regard to appropriation of missionary money, in
which he advised

greater carefulness in its appropriation to needed fields of labor.
WITHDRAWN. -- On recommendation of the Committee on Conference Relation, Richard J. Millard was permitted to withdraw from the Conference.
EXONERATED. -- On the report of Committee on Conference Relation in the case of Wm. Gorst, he was on motion of D. Marquette, fully exonerated by a unanimous rising vote of the Conference.
SUPERNUMERARY. -- On motion of J. B. Maxfield, the relation of T. W. Matthews and J. J. Banbury was changed from Effective to Supernumerary, and the Bishop was requested to transfer Brother Banbury to the New England Conference.
ADDRESSES. -- Rev. Dr. E. E. Clough, Presiding Elder in Black Hills Conference, was introduced and gave an address on the needs and prospects of Methodism in the Black Hills. Rev. Dr. J. W. Shenk was introduced and addressed the Conference concerning the interests of the Omaha Christian Advocate.
ANNOUNCEMENTS. --
Announcements were made, the doxology was sung and the Conference
closed with the benediction by Dr. Maxfield.
Saturday, October 1, 1898. -- Conference re-convened at 8:30 A. M., N. A. Martin conducted devotional services, the Bishop took the chair, the Journal of Friday's session was read and approved. The Bishop nominated Triers of Appeal which were approved. (See list.)
MISSIONARY SERMON. -- To preach the Annual Missionary Sermon at the Eighteenth Session, the Bishop appointed C. O. Larrison, and as alternate, Thomas Bithel.
COLLECTION. -- J. W. Shenk presented $25 as the Omaha Christian Advocate's donation to the Conference Claimant Fund in favor of Mrs. J. Fowler, and on motion of A. Hodgetts a collection was taken for the Conference Claimant Fund. A vote of thanks was extended to Dr. Shenk for his donation.

ADMISSION. -- The following named Probationers were called forward and addressed by the Bishop, viz Walter L. Elliott, Ronald J. McKenzie, Harry G. Kemp. The Bishop asked them the usual disciplinary questions, and on motion of J. B. Maxfield they were admitted into fall membership and elected to Deacon's Orders.
THANKS. -- On motion of J. B. Maxfield a vote of thanks was extended to J. H. Brooks and R. J. Cocking for valuable services rendered in reporting for the Select Number.
INTRODUCTION. -- W. R. Jackson, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Rev. T. W. Leard, pastor of the Presbyterian church in Schuyler and A. V. Wilson of the Nebraska Conference were introduced. Deaconnesses Miss Jennie Jackson and Miss Lulu I. Clifton were introduced and addressed the Conference in the interests of the Methodist Hospital and Deaconess' Home.
OLD MINUTES. -- On motion of J. E. Moore, the Secretary was authorized to sell old minutes at ten cents per copy.

APPOINTMENTS. -- On motion of A. Hodgetts, it was ordered that when we adjourn, it be to meet in the evening immediately following the Epworth League Anniversary, and the Bishop was requested to read the appointments at the close of the evening session.
ANNOUNCEMENTS. --
Announcements were made, the doxology was sung and the Conference
closed with the benediction by Dr. Shenk.
Saturday evening, October 1. The evening session met as per adjournment, the Bishop in the chair.

VACANCY. -- The Bishop appointed E. E. Hosman to fill the vacancy on Conference Board of Examiners.
TRANSFERS. -- The
Bishop announced the following transfers.

SUBSTITUTED. -- J. M. Bothwell was substituted for J. B. Leedom as Trier of Appeals.
RESOLUTIONS. -- C. C. Cissell read report of Committee on Resolutions and it was adopted by rising vote.
MISSIONARY APPROPRIATIONS. -- D. K. Tindall read the Missionary Appropriations, which were approved.
APPOINTMENTS. -- The
Conference joined in singing Hymn No. 770, beginning "I love thy
kingdom, Lord." H. L. Powers led in prayer, after which the Bishop
addressed the Conference and read the appointments. On motion of
A. Hodgetts it was ordered that after the Sunday services and
filing the certificates of ordination with the Secretary on Monday
morning, the Conference stand adjourned sine die.
