MINUTES OF THE NEBRASKA CONFERENCE. |
As the use of tobacco is a filthy habit, ignoring the golden maxim of Wesley, that "Cleanliness is next to godliness," and the requirements of St. Paul, "Let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh." As it is an expensive indulgence, costing consumers on an average $20 each per year, or $500 in twenty-five years, and costing consumers in the United States not less than $100,000,000 annually, leaving that much less in the world to benefit our race, and violates the precept of Mr. Wessley : " Gain all you can--give all you can," and of St. Paul: "As ye have opportunity do good unto all men." As its use debilitates both body and mind, produces a nervous irritability, exhausts the vital forces and thus shortens life, which brings men to judgment before their time in the very violation of the commandment, "Thou shalt not kill." As Christian Ministers are regarded and should be in fact the living exponents of morality and religion, they should be the embodiment of whatsoever things are pure, lovely, and of good report, and an error on their part, either in faith or practice, may produce evils whose magnitude and extent eternity alone can unfold. And as many of our preachers persist in the use of tobacco and thus cast their influence in favor of this curse to humanity, therefore,
Resolved, That a reform in this regard is demanded by the genius of our church and the purity of the gospel. That we will not receive on trial in this Conference any man, without a pledge from him that he will refrain entirely from the use of tobacco or snuff. That we will not receive into full connection any man who persists in the use of tobacco. That we earnestly recommend all our preachers within the bounds of this Conference to inculcate the spirit of these resolutions both by precept and example. That these resolutions should be appended to and form a part of the standing rules of this Conference.
L. W. SMITH, |
The following was passed at the anniversary of the Conference Missionary Society.
Resolved, That, believing in the final triumph of the glorious cause of missions, we will use our best efforts to advance our missionary collections one hundred per cent.
G. W. ELWOOD.
