SUMMARY OF PROCEEDINGS.

     The Thirteenth Session of the Nebraska Annual Conference was held at Plattsmouth, commencing April 18, 1873, Bishop E. G. Andrews presiding.

     The opening religious services were conducted by the Bishop.

     The following bretheren (sic) answered to their names: J. Adriance, J. M. Adair, G. S. Alexander, L. F. Britt, W. S. Blackburn, A. G. Blackwell, R. Burge, H. T. Davis, G. W. De La Matyr, J. H. De La Matyr, F. M. Esterbrook, J. L. Fort, A. L. Folden, David Hart, Cyrus A. King, T. B. Lemon, J. G. Miller, J. B. Maxfield, H. P. Mann, D. Marquett, J. W. Martin, C. McKelvey, S. H. Manley, M. Pritchard, W. A. Presson, J. H. Presson, H. Presson, W. B. Slaughter, A. J. Swartz, S. P. Van Doozer, A. G. White.

     Bishop Andrews announced the transfer of G. B. Crippen and Clark Wright.

     W. B. Slaughter was elected Secretary, and authorized to nominate his assistants.

     Ordered that the Presiding Elders be a committee to nominate the Standing Committees.

     A committee on Ministerial Support and one on Missions were ordered.

     Ordered that the committee on the Women's Foreign Missionary Society, consider also the general cause of missions.

     The Presiding Elders for the ensuing Conference year were appointed a committee to nominate the committees for the next Conference.

     Ordered that the Presiding Elders be instructed to furnish each preacher with a statistical blank at the Fourth Quarterly Meeting.

     Ordered that the Missionary Anniversary be held on Saturday evening.

     The Bishop announced that this Conference is authorized to draw on the Chartered Fund for forty dollars, and the draft was ordered.

     The Committee on Nominations reported and their report was adopted. (See Standing Committees).

     The 8th Question, "Who are the Supernumerary Preachers?" was taken up, and Lewis Janney was passed and his relation continued.

     Conference adjourned, notices were given, and the benediction was pronounced by A. G. White.


Second Day, April 19, 1873.

     Conference met at 9 A. M. Bishop Andrews in the Chair.

     Religious services were conducted by Bro. T. B. Lemon.

     The following additional brethren were present: W. B. M. Colt, G. W. Elwood, B. C. Parker, L. W. Smith, D J. Ward.

     Minutes were read and approved.

     Certificates of transfer of B. H. Beale and D F. Rodabaugh, were presented and their names were placed on the Conference roll.

     Bishop Andrews presented the following papers, which were referred: Report of the Book Committee, and exhibit of the Book Concern at New York and Cincinnati; Report of the Corresponding Secratary (sic), W. F. M. S. for Nebraska; a paper from the Secretaries of our benevolent societies, touching the mode of making reports.

     Accounts of the New York Book Concern were referred to A. J. Swartz.

     The 7th Question, "Who have been elected and ordained Elders this year?" was taken up, and David Marquett, F. M. Esterbrook and Joseph W. Martin were severally elected.

     The 3d Question, "Who remain on trial?" was taken up, and John Gallagher, T. A. Hull, James R. Reed, Wm. E. Bassett, and Peter Lindquist were continued. John Patterson, Wm. H. Porter, George Scott and S. B. York were continued and required to be examined on the first year's studies.

     G. M. Cooper, J. W. Perkins, discontinued at their own request. J. F. Smith discontinued

     The 6th Question, "Who are the Deacons of the Second Class?" was taken up, and J. H. Presson passed. A. G. Blackwell was passed and required to pass an examination at the next Conference, on the studies of the third year.

     The 4th and 5th Questions, "Who are admitted into full connection?" and "Who are the Deacons of the First Class?" were taken up. Wm. Peck, G. H. Wehn, L. F. Whitehead, C. W. Wells and D B. Lake were examined by the Bishop in the presence of the Conference; and Wm. Peck, G. H. Wehn, L. F. Whitehead and C. W. Wells

were severally admitted and elected to Deacon's orders. Dennis B. Lake was admitted, he being a Deacon.

     C. W. Comstock was discontinued at his own request.

     S. P. Bollman was continued on trial.

     Isaac W. Bradt was reported deceased.

     The 19th Question, "Have any local preachers been ordained?" was taken up, and D. C. Braman was elected to Elders' orders; and R. Pearson, W. M. Worley and T. G. Newman were elected to Deacons' orders.

     G. S. Alexander was appointed a Committee on Collections for the support of the Bishops.

     Ordered that the Presiding Elders nominate the Triers of Appeals.

     Conference adjourned. The benediction was pronounced by J. G. Miller.


Third Day, April 21, 1873.

     Conference met at 9 A. M. Bishop Andrews in the Chair.

     Religious services conducted by Bro. Wiley, of the Rock River Conference.

     Minutes were read and approved.

     The certificate of ordination of Deacons and Elders was presented by Bishop Andrews and read.

     The 8th Question, "Who are the Supernumerary Preachers ?" was taken up.

     M. F. Shinn was continued.

     E. J. Fulford was granted a location.

     The 9th Question, "Who are the Superannuated Preachers?" was taken up, and Hiram Burch, Z. Turman, J. T. Cannon, and C. W. Giddings were continued. David Hart and L. W. Smith were made effective; W. P. Grantham Supernumerary. The name of J. J. Roberts being called, the P. E. reported that Bro. Roberts died a few weeks since in triumph.

     The 10th Question, Was the character of each preacher exammed?" was taken up.

     M. Pritchard, T. B. Lemon, W. S. Blackburn, J. W. Taylor, W. B. Slaughter, W. A. Presson, R. Burge, D. J. Ward, were severally examined and passed.

     R. C. Johnson and L. F. Britt were passed and granted a supernumerary relation.

     D. H. May was passed and granted a superannuated relation.

     The name of Isaac Burns being called, the P. E. announced his peaceful death.

     S. M. Maxfield, A. J. Swartz, B. C. Parker, H. Presson, R. H. Crane and W. D. Gage were examined and passed.

     H. T. Davis, G. S. Alexander, W. B. M. Colt, A. L. Folden, H. P. Mann, W. E. Morgan, S. H. Manley, J. L. Fort and J. G. Miller were examined and passed.

     Conference requested the re-appointment of Bro. Manley and Bro. Miller to their present positions.

     A. G. White, G. W. Gue, C. McKelvey, J. M. Adair, C. L. C. Smith, J. Adriance, G W. De La Matyr and C. A. King were examined and passed.

     G. W. Gue was granted a location at his own request.

     Ordered that the Committee on Memoirs be instructed to arrange for suitable services in memory of our sainted dead to-morrow afternoon.

     Ordered that all collections for the Educational Fund and Freedman's Aid Society, be handed to Bro. Cameron, and that he be requested to furnish a statement thereof to the Secretary for the Minutes.

     Conference adjourned to meet to-morrow morning at 8 o'clock

     The benediction was pronounced by S. P. Van Doozer.


Fourth Day, April 22, 1878.

     Conference met at 8 A. M. Bishop Andrews in the Chair.

     Religious services were conducted by Bro. Colt.

     The Minutes were read and approved.

     The 10th Question was resumed, and S. P. Van Doozer and J. H. De La Matyr were examined and passed. J. H. De La Matyr was granted a Supernumerary relation.

     B. C. Parker was granted a location at his own request.

     G. W. Elwood was continued in a supernumerary relation.

      Bro. Lindquist was granted a discontiuance (sic) at his own request, and the Conference adopted the following resolution:

     "As it is thought best to discontinue the Scandinavian Mission in Nebraska, it becomes necessary to discontinue the missionary Rev. Peter Lindquist; and as he has labored faithfully and acceptably for eighteen months among us, we desire in our collective capacity to express our confidence in and affection for him; therefore

     RESOLVED, 1st. That we regard Bro. Lindquist as a devoted and effective minister of the gospel.

     2d. That we request the Presiding Bishop to give Bro. Lindquist a recommendation to his people in Sweden, embodying the statements above and whatever else he may think expedient."

     Bro. Whitehead was granted a supernumerary relation.

     The 2d Question, "Who are admitted on trial?" was taken up, and S. D. Roberts, T. W. Brookbank, Wm. M. Worley, C. McCune, T. J. Newman, A. L. Goss, D. S. Davis and R. Pearson were admitted. The candidates not having been examined on rhetoric, they were requested to pass an examination thereon at the next Conference.

     Elijah J. Willis, an Elder in the Methodist Church, was examined before the Conference, his orders recognized, and he was received into this Conference.

     P. P. Landon, an Elder in the church of the United Brethren in Christ, was recognized as a local Elder on the Schuyler circuit.

     H. Keith, an Elder in the church of United Brethren in Christ, was recognized as an Elder in the M. M. Church, and received on trial in this Conference.

     David C. Brannon was re-admitted and placed in the class of the third year.

     The 23d Question, "Where and when shall the next Conference be held?" Omaha; time not fixed.

     The Committee on Church Extension reported, and the report was adopted.

     The following resolution was adopted

     RESOLVED, That the Board of Bishops be most respectfully requested to change the time of the sessions of the Nebraska Conference to the Fall of the year, and that it be hereafter held as near the 1st of October as possible. Resolved, That the matter of holding the next session, whether in six or eighteen months, be referred to the Board of Bishops.

     The Committee on the Missionary Cause reported, and the report was adopted.

     W. W. Alderson, recommended by the Quarterly Conference of Helena Circuit, Montana Territory, was elected to Deacon's orders.

     Conference adjourned to meet at half-past 2 P. M.

     The benediction was pronounced by H. T. Davis.


AFTERNOON SESSION,

     Conference met at half past 2 P. M. J. B. Maxfield in the chair.

     Reglious (sic) services were conducted by J. Adriance.

     The Conference Board of Trustees reported and the report was adopted.

     Bishop Andrews resumed the chair.

     Committee on Education reported; the report was adopted.

     Resolutions touching the location of Conference Seminary at Lincoln offered by J. G. Miller was adopted.

     Committee on Sunday Schools reported; report adopted.

     Auditing Committee reported; report adopted.

     Committee on Ministeral (sic) Support reported; report adopted.

     A Form of Statistical Blanks, presented by G. S. Alexander was referred to the Society with instructions to revise and print one thousand copies.

     T. B. Lemon, G. S. Alexander, A. J. Swartz, J. M. Adair and G. H. Wehn, were elected a Committee on Preachers Aid Society.

     The Stewards reported; and the report was adopted.

     A collection ($16) was taken, the proceeds to be equaly (sic) divided between Bro. Turman and Sister Bradt.

     Committee on Tract Cause reported; report adopted.

     Committee on Periodicals reported; report adopted.

     Ordered that the memorial services be deferred till evening.

     Committee on Temperance reported; report adopted.

     Ordered that the Secretary insert the exhibit of the Book Concern in the Minutes and draw on the agents for the amount.

     The Secretary was instructed to edit the minutes.

     The Statistical Secretary presented a synopsis of the statistics which was adopted.

     The Committee on Missions reported; report adopted.

     Conference adjourned to meet at half-past 7 P. M.

     The benediction was pronounced by M. Pritchard.



EVENING SESSION

     Conference met at half-past 7 P. M. Bishop Andrews in the chair.

     Opening services were conducted by C. McKelvey.

     Bishop Andrews then introduced the Memorial Services by reading the 1081st hymn.

     Bro. Lemon asked permission for the Committe (sic) on Memoirs to continue their labors beyond the close of Conference, to prepare suitable memories of our diceased (sic) brethren, to be published in the Minutes. The request was granted.

     Bro. Lemon then spoke feelingly of the labors, the trials, the fortitude, the deep earnest piety and the triumphant death of Isaac Burns.

     J. G. Miller gave an account of the early religious life of J. J. Roberts, his call to the ministry, and his earnest consistent fidelity therein. He also paid a deserved tribute to his powerful intellect.

     G. S. Alexander remarked upon the simplicity of faith, the perfect assurance, the happy death of Bro. Roberts, relating several affecting incidents that occurred near the close of his life. H. T. Davis added a few words of similar import.

     D. J. Ward spoke of Isaac Bradt. He was a faithful preacher, very direct, very unassuming. He preached to the heart. He never failed. He had a rich experience to the last.

     Bro. Hart spoke of father Burns. He was a good man. He often found him at prayer in his place of business. Brief remarks were also made by L. VT. Smith, W. B. M. Colt and M. Pritchard.

     Bishop Andrews closed this service with a few impressive words.

     Resolutions of thanks were adopted. Religious services were conducted by the Bishop. Conference adjourned, and the appointments were read. The doxology was sung and the benediction was pronounced by Bishop Andrews.
