The fifteenth session of the Nebraska Annual Conference was held in the M. E. Church, in Lincoln, beginning September 15th, 1875, at 9 o'clock A.M.,
Bishop GILBERT HAVEN presiding.
The opening religious services were conducted by the Bishop.
The Secretary of the last session called the roll, and the following brethren answered to their names:

W. B. Slaughter was elected Secretary, and authorized to appoint his assistants.
L. F. Britt, Wm. Peck, and John Galligher were appointed such assistants.
J. R. Reed, S. A. Bear, and A. Roberts were appointed to assist Br. Galligher on statistics.
The presiding elders were authorized to appoint the standing committees.
The transfer of C. G. Lathrop to this Conference was announced, and his name was placed on the Conference roll.
The time for opening the sessions of Conference was fixed at 8 A. M., and for closing at 12 M.

The bar of the Conference was fixed, and the lay delegates were invited to seats inside the bar.
The exhibit of the Western Book concern was submitted, and referred to committee on Claims.
The 9th question--" Who are the superannuated preachers ?" was taken up.
D. H. May, L. W. Smith, Z. B. Turman, J. C. Cannon, C. W. Giddings were continued.
A committee on Insurance of Church property was ordered, and H. Burch, W. P. Grantham, G. S. Alexander, Wm. Peck, C. L. Smith, and Geo. Scott were appointed such committee.
The assessment of expenses of delegates to the general Conference was referred to the presiding elders.
On motion it was ordered that a committee on Episcopal Fund be one of the standing committees of the Conference.
A committee on Memoirs was ordered, and M. Prichard was authorized to nominate said committee.
On motion, a committee of one from each district, on division of the Conference, was ordered, said committee to be appointed by the chair.
The 10th question--" Was the character of each preacher examined?" was taken up.
J. B. Maxfield reported Beatrice district, and his character was passed.
D. Hart, J. W. Stewart, W. D. Gage, W. E. Morgan, G. W. Elwood, W. P. Grantham, E. Wilkinson were passed.
H. T. Davis reported Lincoln district, and his character was passed.
W. B. Slaughter, J. M. Adair, G. B. Crippen, A. L. Folden, G. S. Alexander, S. H. Manley, J. G. Miller, D. Marquett, and R. Rowbotham were passed.
A. G. White's name being called, M. Prichard presented a bill of charges against Bro. White, and moved that T. B. Lemon and D. F. Rodabaugh be appointed to prosecute.
It was moved by W. B. Slaughter that the case be tried in open Conference.
G. S. Alexander moved to amend by referring the case to a committee of thirteen, to be appointed by the chair, and the motion was carried.

Br. Prichard presented the names of J. W. Martin, W. S. Blackburn, and J. W. Taylor as the committee on Memoirs, and they were elected.
The Bishop named the following as the committee on Division of the Conference: J. H. Presson, G. W. Elwood, D. Marquett, Clark Wright, P. A. Crowell, J. C. Orr.
Conference adjourned, and the
benediction was pronounced by G. W. De La Matyr.
SECOND DAY.
Thursday, Sept. 16, 1875.
A Conference prayer meeting preceded the session. At 8 A.M.
Bishop Haven took the chair, and the Conference proceeded to business.
Dr. Fry, editor C. C. Advocate, was introduced to the Conference.
S. P. Wilson was elected Conference treasurer, to receive all benevolent collections, except that for missions.
The chairman of the Missionary committee, G. W. Elwood, was appointed to receive the missionary collections.
A.. G. White reported Kearney district, and J. Marsh, E. J. Willis, A. J. Swartz, D. A. Crowell, and C. L. Smith were passed.
S. P. Van Doozer reported the North Nebraska district, and his character was passed.
J. S. Orr and J. B. Leedom were passed.
The case of J. W. Plummer was referred to the P. E. of the district in which Lyons shall be situated the coming year, with instruction that he be requested to ask a location.
M. Prichard reported the Nebraska district, and his character was passed.
J. H. Presson, W. S. Blackburn, C. McKelvy, P. F. Rodabaugh, R. Burge, Thos. Audas, J. W. Martin, R. C. Johnson, L. F. Britt, H. Burch, and J. W. Taylor were passed.
G. W. De La Matyr reported the Omaha district, and his character. was passed.

Charges were presented against Clark Wright, and his case was referred to a committee of thirteen, to be appointed by the chair.
T. B. Lemon, F. M. Esterbrook, and F. M. Wheeler were passed.
J. G. Miller was appointed to act as counsel, and D. Marquett as assistant counsel, for the church, in the case of Clark Wright.
All papers relating to the case of A. G. White and Clark Wright were referred to their respective committees.
The eighth question--" Who are the supernumerary preachers!" was taken up.
L. Janney was passed, and his relation changed to superannuate.
S. P. Bollman, W. B. M. Colt, J. L. Fort were continued. The case of L. F. Whitehead was referred to his presiding elder, and J. H. Presson, with instructions.
A. Burris was granted a location at his own request
On motion, 10 o'clock A.M. Saturday was fixed as the time to elect delegates to the general Conference.
The third question--" Who remain on trial!" was taken up.
A. Drahms was discontinued at his own request. J. H. Bethard was discontinued. Samuel A. Bear, M. A. Tibbetts, E. J. Hancock, Dayton Andrus, Charles Reilly, J. B. Wolfe, J. Q. A. Fleharty, and John Armstrong were continued.
The fifth question--" Who are the deacons of the first class?" was taken up.
John Galligher and James R. Reed were advanced to the second class.
F. A. Hull was continued.
The case of T. H. Tibbles was referred to the committee on the case of Clark Wright. J. G. Miller was appointed prosecutor.
T. H. Tibbles was appointed assistant counsel with Br. Lemon in the case of Br. White.
The seventh question--" Who have been elected and ordained elders this year?" was taken up.
Charles Reilly passed, and his examination on the third year was recognized.
Wm. Peck, C. W. Wells, D. B. Lake, and S. P. Wilson were passed, and elected to elders' orders.
Calvin M. Bryan was granted a location at his own request.
G. H. Wehn was re-admitted, and elected to elders' orders.
D. C. Brannan, and Edwin Buck passed.

D. Marquett was appointed, at the request of J. G. Miller, to assist him in the prosecution of T. H. Tibbles.
L. F. Britt was added to the committee on Periodicals.
W. B. Slaughter was made assistant counsel on the prosecution of Br. Wright.
The minutes were read and approved,
conference adjourned, and the benediction was pronounced by J. W.
Taylor.
THIRD DAY.
Friday, Sept. 17, 1875.
Conference met at 8 1/2 A.M., Bishop Haven in the chair.
Religious services were conducted by IH Presson.
The committee on the Division of Conference reported, and, on, motion, the report was laid on the table.
The fourth question--" Who are admitted into full connection?" was taken up.
Geo. Scott, S. D. Roberts, Wm. Worley, A. L. Goss, D. S. Davis, Richard Pearson, J. M. Richards, and John Patterson were addressed by the Bishop, and examined before the Conference.
George Scott, S. D. Roberts, Wm. Worley, A. L. Goss, Richard Pearson, D. S. Davis, J. M. Richards, and John Patterson were admitted and elected to Deacons' orders.
Dr. Fry, editor of the Central Christian Advocate, addressed the Conference, after which the following resolutions were adopted:
Resolved--That we approve the course pursued by Dr. Fry as editor of the C. C. Advocate, and pledge ourselves to renewed diligence to circulate the Advocate.
The following resolution was offered by C. L. Smith, and adopted:
Resolved--That while we as a Conference welcome to our midst such transfers as are willing to remain with us, filling such appointments as may, from time to time, be given them, we are opposed to having transfers come to fill special appointments.
On motion, the Conference invited the electoral Conference to meet with us in joint session tomorrow morning at half-past eight o'clock.

Br. Audas was excused as chairman of the committee on Education, and C. L. Smith was appointed in his place.
The committee on Education were instructed to confer with the electoral Conference, and provide for joint action on the subject of education.
G. S. Alexander was elected president of the Conference Missionary Society.

FOURTH DAY.
Saturday, September 18, 1875.
Conference met at 8 o'clock A.M., in joint session with the electoral Conference, Bishop Haven in the chair.
Religious services by J. B. Maxfield.
Judge Blaine, president of the Electoral Conference, was introduced, and took a seat on the platform.
The following joint resolutions were adopted:
ON EDUCATION.
Whereas, The M. E. Church has always been alive to the subject of education, and
Whereas, for the past few years, there have been efforts to locate and establish an institution under the patronage of the Nebraska Conference of the M. E. Church, and
Whereas, We believe that the time is come for definite action, therefore
Resolved, That we earnestly request the brethren of the Conference to take immediate steps toward the establishment of an institution of seminary grade.
Resolved, That we are deeply impressed with the importance of education, and, as ministers and laymen, will use our influence to advance its interests.
Resolved, That we request the members of the Conference to preach on the subject in their respective charges.
Resolved, That we discourage the sending of Protestant children to Romish schools.
Resolved, That we believe that the common school, with the Bible in, it as our fathers gave it to us, is the foundation stone of our civil and religious liberties; that we are satisfied with this legacy as it is, and we are opposed to any interference with it, either in the diversion of its funds to sectarian use or control, or to the removal of the Bible from its proper place as one of the agencies of our common school education.

The following resolution was offered by G. S. Alexander, and adopted:
Resolved, That in view of the probable surrender of the management of our State University to the control of "freethinkers," we hereby instruct the trustees of this Conference to establish a school of seminary and college grade at some point within the bounds of this Conference, in time for the winter term or by January, 1876, if such school shall be in any measure practicable and possible.
By invitation Prof. McKenzie addressed the Conference on the subject of education.
Chancellor Benton, of the State University, was introduced to the Conference.
The following joint report on insurance of church property was adopted:
The joint committee beg leave to report on the subject of CHURCH INSURANCE, that we were unable to obtain the facts called for in the circular of Dr. Kynett, and would therefore recommend that M. M. Hamlin, Esq., of Nebraska City, and Geo. S. Alexander be appointed a committee to look up the facts required, and report the same to Dr. Kynett and also to the trustees of this Conference, for such action as they may consider best in the premises.
The joint committee on Church
Extension presented the following
While we. have great reason to bless God for the organization of the Church Extension Society of the M. E. Church, and while very much good has accrued to the cause of Christ through its instrumentality; yet while in its operations it has not fully met the expectations of the church, and consequently is not meeting with that cordial support and hearty co-operation that it deserves, through, as we believe, its methods of operations, therefore,
Resolved, That we the members of the Nebraska Annual and Electoral Conferences of the M. E. Church, respectfully request our General Conference to so change the management of the Church Extension Society that the amounts for loans and donations assigned to our annual Conferences shall be under the direct control of the same, in a manner similar to our missionary appropriations, and not subject in any way to the control of the parent society.
Resolved, That we instruct our delegates to the ensuing General Conference to do all in their power to secure the change indicated.
The Bishop announced that this Conference is authorized to draw on the Chartered Fund for thirty (30) dollars. The draft was ordered.
The 19th question--" Have any local preachers been ordained?" was taken up.
Nicholas Lahy, Jabez Charles, and J. T. C. Trim were elected to deacons' orders.
The Bishop was requested to appoint G. S. Alexander as financial agent for the seminary and college.

Messrs. Angie Newman, corresponding secretary of the W. F. M. S. for Nebraska, addressed the Conference.
The hour for electing delegates to the General Conference having arrived, D. F. Rodabaugh, G. H. Wehn, J . H. Presson, D. A. Crowell, and Geo. Scott were elected tellers, and the Conference proceeded to ballot. On the first ballot

FIFTH DAY.
Monday, September 20, 1875.
Conference met at 8 1/2 o'clock A.M., Bishop Haven in the chair. Religious services were conducted by F. M. Wheeler.
The statistical report was read and adopted.
On motion, the parchments of Br. James Bishop were restored.
Hon. J. L. Webster was elected to act as counsel for the prosecution in the ease of A. U. White, in the place of T. B. Lemon, who was reported sick.
The second question--"Who are admitted on trial?" was taken up, and
A. J. Combs, Geo. A. Hobson, B. S. Taylor, Peter Van Fleet, Matthias Campbell were admitted.
J. B. Maxfield introduced the following resolutions, which were adopted.

Resolved--That we have heard with pleasure of the action of the trustees of the Simpson Centenary College, establishing a law school at Des Moines, Iowa, and also of their purpose to establish a school of medicine. We believe this a timely move in the right direction. Our church colleges are properly heads of all professional studies. They have always had that relation. We hereby pledge to send students desiring such professional training to the Des Moines Schools of Law and Medicine until we have established like schools in our own University.
Ordered that the secretary furnish a copy of the above resolution to the trustees of Simpson Centenary College.
A. J. Swarts was granted a superannuated relation.
The following committee on current book accounts was appointed; viz., J. H. Presson, A. L. Folden, G. H. Wehn, Geo. Scott, E. J. Willis, B. S. Taylor.
The following resolution was adopted:
Resolved--That our delegates to the General Conference be requested to use their influence to have our discipline so changed as to have the delegates to the Electoral Conference elected by a plurality vote of the membership.
The committee of Examination of the first year reported on the ease of W. H. Tibbetts, and he was passed to the second year.
The Committee in the case of Clark Wright reported their verdict, and his character was passed.
The report of the Relief Society of the M. E. Church in Nebraska was submitted.
The second question--" Who are admitted on trial?" was taken up, and
J. L. Vincent was admitted.
A motion that we request the next General Conference to provide that the presiding elders be elected by the Annual Conferences, was laid on the table.
Conference adjourned, and the
benediction was pronounced by C. L. Smith.
SIXTH DAY.
Thursday, September 21, 1875.
Conference met at 8 1/2 o'clock A. M., Bishop Haven in the chair.
The opening religious services were conducted by D. Hart.
G. S. Alexander offered the following resolutions:
Resolved--That the thanks of this Conference are hereby extended to the Conferences, churches, and friends in the east, for their generous response to the

various appeals made in behalf of our people whose homes were desolated and impoverished by the devastation of the locusts in our midst during the past year.
Resolved--That so far as we have been able to ascertain, the money and clothing collected by our presiding elders and agents of the Relief Society of the It. B. Church in Nebraska, have been faithfully applied to the purpose for which they were donated; and that the timely relief thus afforded has been the means of keeping a large number of our preachert (sic) at their post of duty in this hour of calamity and need.
Resolved--That the recollection of this great kindness will be ever kept fresh in our hearts and memories; and we most earnestly pray the Almighty Giver of all good bountifully to reward, both in this world and that which is to come, all those who befriended us in our affliction.
Resolved--That the secretary of this Conference be instructed to forward copies of these resolutions to the Central, North-western, Pittsburgh, and New York Christian Advocates, and to Zion's Herald, for publication.
The resolutions were adopted.
The committee, in the case of T. H. Tibbles, reported their verdict, and his character was passed.
The committee on Sunday Schools reported, and the report was adopted, as follows:
We, the committee, to whom was
referred the subject of Sunday Schools, would submit the
following
Resolved--By the Nebraska Conference assembled, that we, as members of the same, will use all diligence in the Sunday School department, and that we will be present in the Sunday School, and give it our influence.
Resolved--That we urge our people to adopt the Berean system of Sunday School lessons.
Resolved--As the Sunday School is "The Church at work," the preacher that does not improve this opportunity of placing the impress of Christ upon the hearts of the young loses his first and best opportunity of working for the Master.
Resolved--That we, as a Conference, call loudly upon the presiding elders, asking them to see that the preachers in their respective districts carry out the design of the discipline as found on page 150, sec. 75.
The committee on Periodicals reported, and the report was adopted, as follows:
Whereas, our country is flooded with a superficial and, in many respects, a corrupt literature, and,
Whereas, we recognize the increasing necessity of circulating our church periodicals, therefore
Resolved--That we will do all in our power to circulate our church papers and literature, especially the North-western and Central Christian Advocates, during the ensuing year.
The place of holding the next session of the Conference was fixed at Falls City.
The following resolution of thanks was adopted by a rising vote:
Resolved--That this Conference extend to the people of Lincoln our hearty thanks for the very kind and hospitable manner in which they have welcomed us to their homes, and ministered to our comfort, during the session of the Conference.

The following resolution was offered by H. Burch, W. B. M. Colt, J. H. Presson, David Hart, Wm. A. Worley, and H. T. Davis, and adopted by the Conference:
Whereas, there is a growing interest among the people on the doctrine and experience of entire sanctification as held and taught by the founder of our church, and
Whereas, we believe the National Association for the Promotion of Holiness are safe and successful teachers of the same, therefore,
Resolved, That we as a conference invite them to hold a camp meeting among us at their own convenience during the summer of 1876, and that we pledge our co-operation to make such a meeting a success.
The second question--"Who are admitted on trial?" was taken up, and H. T. Davis and Hon. J. M. McKenzie were appointed a committee to correspond with the National Association for the Promotion of Holiness.
Conference adjourned, and the
benediction was pronounced by Wm. Worley.
SEVENTH DAY.
Wednesday, September 22, 1875.
Conference met at 8 1/2 A.M., Bishop Haven in the chair.
The minutes were read and approved.
On motion, the thanks of the Conference were tendered to all brethren who have been actively engaged in procuring supplies for the grasshopper sufferers in this state.
It was announced that the Conference is invited to visit the penitentiary this morning at 11 o'clock. The invitation was accepted.
Adjourned to meet at 8 1/2 A.M.
to-morrow, unless called together sooner by the Bishop.

The Missionary committee made their report.
Resolutions of thanks to Bishop haven were adopted.
Thanks were tendered to the M. P. R. R. Co. for their kindness in giving a free excursion to the penitentiary yesterday.
The committee on Temperance
reported, and time report was adopted, as follows:
Whereas, Intemperance is regarded by us as the giant sin of the nation; and
Whereas, We regard the sale of alcoholic liquors as the most active agent of the powers of darkness against the church of our Lord Jesus Christ,
Resolved--That we are more than ever opposed to the manufacture, sale, and use of intoxicating liquors.
Resolved--That we regard temperance as a cardinal doctrine of our holy Christianity, as much as righteousness and judgment to come.
Resolved--That we will preach definitely, and pointedly, and frequently on the subject.
Resolved--That we will, as pastors, vigorously enforce the discipline of our church in regard to tippling and dram drinking.
Resolved--That we will pray, vote, and co-operate with sister churches and temperance organizations for the prohibition of the liquor traffic.
Resolved--That we request the Bishop to appoint: J. G. Miller state temperance lecturer.
The committee in the case of A. G. White, reported their verdict, and his character was passed.
The Auditing committee made their report.
The following resolution was adopted:
Resolved--That we deprecate and condemn the use of the public press in matters of personal difficulty between brethren, and trust that our disagreements hereafter will not be made subjects of newspaper controversy.
G. B. Crippen was granted a supernumerary relation.
The transfer of I. M. Pardee from the Wyoming Conference to this Conference was announced by the Bishop.
The minutes were read, and, on motion, it was resolved that, after time reading of the appointments, the Conference adjourn.
The Bishop addressed the Conference, read selections, appropriate to the hour, from the 6th chapter 2nd Cor., the last chapter of Luke, and the Psalms. The 221st hymn was sung, and prayer was offered by the Bishop. The appointments were read, and the benediction was pronounced by G. B. Crippen.
