TWENTIETH SESSION.
The Nebraska Annual Conference of the M. E. Church met for its twentieth session, at Nebraska City, on Thursday morning, September 30th, 1880, at nine o'clock.
Previous to the opening of Conference the members engaged in a prayer meeting, led by Samuel Wood.
At nine A. M., Bishop H. W. Warren took the chair, and after reading the fifty-fifth chapter of Isaiah and a part of the sixth chapter of 1 Corinthians, and prayer, proceeded, with the assistance of the Presiding Elders, to administer the sacrament of the Lord's Supper.
The Secretary of the last Conference, S. H. Henderson, at the request of the Bishop, then called the roll, and the following brethren responded:

Z. S. Rhone, an elder in the Kansas Conference, was announced as having been transferred by Bishop Foster, and his name was put upon the roll.
On motion of S. P. Wilson, S. H. Henderson was elected Secretary, by acclamation.
On motion, the Secretary was allowed to appoint his own assistants.
The committee consisting of the Presiding Elders, appointed at the last Conference, to nominate the standing committees, made their report, which was adopted. (See report.)
S. P. Wilson moved that a special committee, consisting of one from each district, be appointed to consider the matter of a division of the Conference. Carried.
On call of the districts the following were named said committee: J. B. Maxfield, J. L. St. Clair, A. G. White, S. P. Wilson, L. F. Britt.
On motion, T. B. Lemon was permitted to add the name of A. C. Crosthwaite.
The Secretary then appointed E. Thomson, C. L. Brockway, and J. Gallagher, Assistants, Wm. Peck, Recording Secretary,, and A. C. Crosthwaite, Statistician.
On motion of T. H. Worley, it was ordered that the roll be called to-morrow morning immediately after the reading of the journal, for the purpose of gathering the statistics and benevolent collections.
Report of Freedman's Aid Society and the New York Book Accounts were introduced and referred to the proper committees.
The following resolution was introduced, and, on motion, adopted:
Resolved, That the committee on Public Worship be requested to arrange for an educational meeting on some evening this week, to be addressed by Bishop Warren and Dr. Fowler.

On motion of S. H. Henderson, J. Gallagher was appointed to secure subscriptions for the minutes.
On motion of T. B. Lemon, W. X. Ninde, D.D., President of Garrett Biblical Institute, was requested to address the Conference at this hour. He being present complied with the request.
J. Gallagher, conference visitor to the same institution, then read a report concerning his visit at the late commencement, which was, on motion, adopted. (See report.)
The parchments of John Armstrong were presented by S. H. Henderson, with his note of withdrawal. Upon examination it was found that there is no certificate of transfer of Bro. Armstrong on file. Whereupon the Bishop requested the Secretary to hold the papers until the conference relation of Bro. Armstrong is determined.
J. H. Cameron, representative of the Western Book Concern being introduced by the Bishop, addressed the Conference on the business of the concern.
The 20th question--" Was the character of each preacher examined?" was taken up.
W. G. Miller, P. E. of the Omaha District, was called, his character passed, and he reported his district.
The names of the Elders on this District were then called, their characters passed, and they reported their collections, to-wit:

P. S. Mather, transferred at last session from the West Wisconsin, and A. C. Williams, transferred from the St. Louis Conference, were introduced.
On motion of J. M. Adair, the regular time for adjournment, after to-day, was fixed at 12 M., and the time of beginning the business session was fixed at 8:30 A.M.
The committees were called and announcements were made.
J. G. Miller was appointed to lead the devotional exercises to-morrow morning.

Lemon pronounced the benediction.
Conference met at 8.30 A.M., Thursday, October 1st, 1880, Bishop Warren in the chair.
Devotional exercises were conducted by J. G. Miller, who read 116th psalm and part of 24th chapter of Luke. He announced the hymn, commencing "Jesus, lover of my soul."
The journal of yesterday's session was read and approved.
On motion of T. B. Lemon J. Gray was substituted for A. G. Crosthwaite on the committee on Division of Conference.
Z. S. Rehoue was introduced.
The order of the day was taken up, viz., the calling of roll for statistics and collections, and the brethren present responded.
On motion of J. G. Miller it was ordered that the roll of delinquents be called to-morrow morning, and that that should be the last call.
A communication from R. S. Rust, Secretary of Freedman's Aid Society, was presented and referred to the committee on that cause.
G. W. Elwood moved that in all discussions during this session speakers be limited to five minutes so long as there are others who desire to speak, which motion was carried.
The third question--" Who remain on trial ?"--was taken up.
The name of G. W. Selby was called, his character passed,

and he was continued on trial, being required to pass examination on Watson's Inst. next year.
H. F. Tyler's character passed, and at the request of his Presiding Elder he was continued in the first year.
W. T. Richardson was discontinued at his own request.
The names of F. H. Calder, J. A. Smith, W. H. Carter, W. K. Loofbourrow, J. A. Nichols, H. C. Harmon, Thos. Aikman, W. F. Grundy, G. G. Senser, E. G. Fowler, A. Madole, A. H. Summers, C. A. Mastin, and S. S. Pennepacker were called, their characters passed, their collections and examinations were reported. They were represented by their Presiding Elders, and were continued on trial.
W. S. Holland was, discontinued at his own request.
The case of L. Barr was, on motion of T. B. Lemon, referred back to the Examining Committee, and they were directed to examine him more fully on the doctrines of the Atonement and Divinity of Christ. The committee were allowed to retire at once.
Rev. J. C. Thompson, pastor of the Congregational Church in this city, was introduced.
G. A. Smith was introduced, and announced by the Bishop as transferred to Nebraska from the Wisconsin Conference.
C. L. Brockway presented the report of the committee to visit the Nebraska Conference Seminary at York, which was referred to the committee on Education.
Edward Thomson, Principal of the Seminary, was introduced by the Bishop, and addressed the Conference concerning the interests of the institution.
The 5th question--" Who are admitted into full connection ?" --was taken up.
The names of O. P. Sheldon, J. A. Chapin, and A. Hodgetts were called, their characters passed; their examinations and collections were reported. They were represented by their Presiding Elders, and admitted to full connection.
The 8th question--" What traveling preachers have been elected deacons?"--was taken up, and it was found that there were no candidates.
The 13th question--" Who are the traveling deacons of the, second class?"--was taken up.

The name of Jabez Charles was called, his character passed and not having been before the committee he was continued in the first class.
Cyrus A. Lewis and Edward J. Hancock were called, their characters passed; collections and examinations were reported; were represented by their presiding elders, and passed to the second class of Deacons.
N. H. Gale was called, and there being no report concerning his case he was continued in the first class of Deacons.
G. A. Hobson was called, and at the request of his Presiding Elder the case was passed for the present.
The 14th question--" What traveling Deacons are elected Elders? "--was taken up.
Thos. H. Worley, Frederick B. Donisthorpe, Charles L. Brockway, Horace A. Ewell, William J. Barger, William H. Tibbits, and Edward J. Hancock were called, their characters passed; their examinations and collections were reported; they were represented by their presiding elders and elected elders.
Rev. Bro. Sherman, pastor of the M. E. Church South, in this city, was introduced.
S. P. Vandoozer presented the report of the trustees of the visitors of the Nebraska Wesleyan University, and they were ordered to be filed.
S. P. Van Doozer introduced the following resolution, and moved its adoption:
Resolved, That the pastors of David City, Rising City, Shelby, Columbus, and Osceola, and the Presiding Elder of Omaha District, be and are hereby appointed a Committee of Visitors to the Nebraska Wesleyan University, and to report to this Conference next year.

H. T. Davis, the presiding elder of the Nebraska City District; was called, his character passed, and he reported his district.

The committee reported on the case of Louis Barr, and he was continued on trial.
A. Brigham was added to the committee on Memoirs.
The committees were called and announcements made.
On motion, the time was extended five minutes, and the Agent of the American Bible Society, Rev. McCandish, addressed the Conference on that cause.
G. A. Smith was appointed to conduct devotional exercises to-morrow morning.
Conference adjourned with the
doxology. Benediction pronounced by Rev. Bro. Sherman.
THIRD DAY.
Conference met at 8.30 A. M, Bishop Warren in the chair.
G. A. Smith conducted the devotional exercises, reading part of the 15th chapter of John, singing "Rock of Ages," and prayer.
The roll of delinquents for statistics and benevolent collections was called.
The minutes of yesterday's session were read and approved.
W. P. Stowe, of the Western Book Concern, Bros. Lake and Morehead, of the Missouri Conference, and S. M. Merrit, of the Michigan Conference, were introduced.
The Bishop announced that there is $30 from the Charter Fund, and on motion, drafts were ordered in favor of C. W. Wells, Treasurer of the Conference Stewards.
J. Gray. was substituted for A. C. Crosthwaite in the committee on Current Book Accounts.
On motion of A. Brigham, 10 o'clock Monday morning was fixed as the time for Memorial Services.

R. Cooley was announced as transferred from the Wisconsin to the Nebraska Conference.
A motion to proceed to fix the place of the next Conference was laid on the table.
Joel A. Smith, having been appointed to mission work in Panama, was elected to Deacon's and Elder's orders under the mission rule of the Discipline.
The 10th question--" What local preachers have been elected to Deacon's orders ?"--was taken up, and on call of the districts the following names were presented upon certificates duly signed by the Presiding Elders and Secretaries of the various Quarterly Conferences recommending their ordination; their examinations reported; they were represented by the Presiding Elders and elected to Deacon's orders, to-wit:
David Y. Black, Ira Woodman, John Spencer, Francis H. Calder, William H. Carter, Charles F. Heywood, Edward G. Fowler, William Esplin, Samuel S. Penepacker, and Nathan R. Brown.
The 20th question was resumed.
The names of the Elders in the Beatrice district were called,. their characters passed, and they reported their collections, to-wit:
L. F. Britt, J. W. Stewart, W. S. Blackburn, S. D. Roberts, and E. Thomson.
The characters of J. M. Richards, R. C. Johnson, and J. S. Orr were passed, and they were granted the supernumerary relation.
T. B. Lemon, P. E. of the Kearney District, was called, his character passed, and he reported his district.
The names of the Elders in this district were called, their characters passed, and they reported their collections, to-wit:
J. Gray, P. C. Johnson, R. Pearson, A. G. Bartholomew, S. Wood, A. C. Crosthwaite, J. W. Dobbs, and C. L. Smith.
The character of J. Marsh was passed, and he was granted the supernumerary relation.
Dr. Fry, editor of the Central Christian Advocate, was introduced.
J. F. Kuhlman, pastor of the Lutheran Church in Nebraska City, was introduced.

Dr. Stowe addressed the Conference upon the business of the Book Concern.
The report of the Book Concern was read.
The Bishop addressed the Class for admission into full connection, and examined them by asking the Disciplinary questions, and extended to them the right hand of fellowship.
On motion of W. G. Miller, J. M. Adair was granted the supernumerary relation.
G. A. Hobson was called and continued in the first class of Deacons.
On motion of W. R. Jones, C. G. Lathrop was granted a superannuated relation.
On motion of D. Marquett, S. P. Van Doozer was appointed to take charge of the collections for expenses of General Conference delegates.
On motion of W. R. Jones, D. S. Davis was granted a supernumerary relation.
C. L. Smith, Chairman of the Conference Stewards, introduced the following resolution, which was, on motion of F. M. Esterbrook, laid on the table:
Resolved, That the sum of $1200 be apportioned in the Conference for Claimants next year.
L. F. Britt presented the report of the committee on Division of the Conference, and its adoption was moved:
Resolved, That we, as a committee, recommend the Division of the Conference, beginning at the mouth of the Platte river, running up said river to the southeast corner of Saunders county, thence west on the south line of Saunders, Butler, and Polk counties to the Platte river.
J. B. Maxfield, of the same committee, read a minority report, and moved its adoption. (See Report).
On motion of J. G. Miller, the time was extended.
J. G. Miller moved that it is inexpedient to divide.
On motion of S. P. Wilson, this was laid on the table.
J. G. Miller moved as a substitute for the whole question to divide on the tine of the Platte.
On motion of J. Gray, the substitute was laid on the table.
On motion of J. L. St. Clair, the whole matter was postponed until Monday morning at 9.30 o'clock.

C. H. Fowler, Secretary of the Missionary Society, was introduced, and addressed the Conference on the subject of Missions.
On motion of S. P. Wilson, S. Wood was made chairman of the committee on Periodicals.
J. M. Adair was appointed to lead the devotional exercises Monday.
Announcements were made, and the
Conference adjourned with the doxology. C. L. Brockway pronounced the
benediction.
FOURTH DAY--MORNING SESSION.
Conference met at 8:30 A. M., Bishop Warren in the chair. Devotional services, singing a hymn, and prayer by J. M. Adair.
The minutes of Saturday were read, corrected, and approved.
Chaplain McCabe addressed the Conference on the work of the Church Extension Society.
Bishop Warren filed the following Certificates of Ordination of Deacons and Elders:
This is to certify that in Nebraska City, Nebraska, on the third day of October, 1880, the following persons were by me ordained to the office of Deacons in the Methodist Episcopal Church, viz.: Joel A. Smith, David Y. Black, John Spencer, Francis H. Calder, William H. Carter, Charles F. Heywood, Edward G. Fowler, William Esplin, and Samuel S. Penepacker; and on October 4th, Ira Woodman and O. P. Sheldon.
And in the same city, October 3d, several Elders assisting in the service, the following persons were ordained to the office of Elders in the Methodist Episcopal Church, to-wit: Thomas H. Worley, Frederick B. Donisthorpe, Horace A. Ewell, Charles L. Brockway, William J. Barger, William H. Tibbits, Joel A. Smith, and E. J. Hancock.

The 2d question--" Who have been admitted on trial?" was. taken up, and on call of the districts the following brethren were presented upon recommendation duly signed by the presiding elders and secretaries of the various quarterly conferences, recommending their admission, their examinations were reported, and they were admitted on trial, to-wit:

T. B. Lemon moved that those presented for admission on trial be required to rank at least 70 in a scale of 100 on each study in the course, and that all who fail shall be required to pass further examination in all studies failed in.
The 6th question--"Who are re-admitted?" was taken up, and John A. Dixon was re-admitted upon certificate of location, he being in elder's orders.
Bros. Harms and Shoemaker, of the Northwest German Conference, and Bro. Hess, of the West Virginia Conference, were introduced.
The order of the day, Memorial Services, was taken up, and A. Brigham read a memoir on C. W. Giddings, deceased. Appropriate remarks were made by H. T. Davis, T. B. Lemon, and J. G. Miller, and the Conference sang "I would not live alway."
The Bishop reported that he had examined and ordained O. P. Sheldon deacon, in presence of the elders.
Rev. Mr. Williams, of the. Baptist church, was introduced.
The order of the day for 9:30 was taken up, viz.: The motion to substitute the minority for the majority report from the committee on division of the Conference.
G. W. Elwood moved to indefinitely postpone. Lost.
J. W. Stewart moved the previous question, which was ordered.

T. B. Lemon moved as a substitute that the question of dividing the Conference be referred to a committee of five, who shall report to the next Conference. Lost.

On motion of J. H. Presson, it was agreed to adjourn to half-past two o'clock, this afternoon.
J. B. Maxfleld was appointed to preside at the afternoon session, and G. W. Selby to conduct the devotional exercises.

Dr. Fry addressed the Conference concerning the Central Christian Advocate.

The moneys apportioned to conference claimants by the Stewards were distributed, to be taken to them: Mrs. Prichard, $113.86, given to F. M. Esterbrook; the children of A. J. Coombs (sic), $68.31, given to S. P. VanDoozer; Mrs. Slaughter, $45.55, given to S. P. VanDoozer; Mrs. Hart, $1.00, given to H. Burch; Mrs. Roberts, $1.00, given to H. T. Davis; Z. B. Turman, $1.00, given to C. A. Lewis.
J. H. Presson offered an amendment to the report on Temperance, recommending that the coming legislature of the state be requested to submit to the people a prohibition amendment to the state constitution, which was adopted.

A. Brigham introduced the following resolution, which was adopted:
Resolved, That such of the members of the M. E. Church as are addicted to the habit, are strongly recommended to cease the use of tobacco, as a dissipating and expensive habit, militating against the wholesome influence of the Church.

J. W. Shank introduced the following resolutions, which were adopted:
Resolved, That the brotherly and christian courtesy manifested by Bishop Warren, during the presidency of this Conference, has greatly endeared him to us all. The memory of this pleasant visit we will cherish in our hearts, and, whenever in future we may see his name connected with our annual gatherings, we will hail it with joy.
Resolved, That we hereby express our heartfelt gratitude to S. P. Wilson and to the people of Nebraska City for the princely hospitality which they have extended to us during this Conference session.
Resolved, That we extend thanks to the B. & M. and U. P. Railroad companies for a reduction of fare from the seat of Conference.

Pending the adoption of the report on Freedman's Aid, Bishop Warren addressed the Conference on that cause.
S. H. Henderson reported a deficit on account of last year's minutes of $20.40, and a collection was immediately taken to meet the deficiency.
The 33d question was taken up, and York was selected as the seat of the next Conference.
Alfred G. Blackwell, a deacon, was re-admitted on certificate of location.
The Bishop announced the nominations for the Conference Board of Church Extension and they were confirmed.
The Bishop also appointed J. P. Roe to preach the annual missionary sermon, with A. C. Williams as alternate.
The 18th question--"Who are the supernumerary preachers?" was taken up, and G. B. Crippen, J. L. Fort, S. H. Manley, J. G. Miller, and D. C. Brannon were called and their relation continued. R. Rowbottom was located at his own request.

The Bishop announced that he had this day ordained Ira Woodman a deacon.
The case of Leslie Stevens was taken up, his examination was reported, he was represented by the Presiding Elder, and admitted on trial.
The 18th question was resumed. G. A. Hobson was given an effective relation. G. W. DeLaMatyr, W. D. Gage, Charles Reilly, and L. W. B. Long were called and continued in the supeanumerary (sic) relation. G. W. Elwood was given an effective relation.
The 19th question--" Who are the superannuated preachers?" C. W. Giddings was announced deceased. L. W. Smith, Z. B. Turman, L. Janney, J. Adriance, and J. C. Cannon were continued in the superannuated relation.
The 28th question--"Who are the triers of appeals?" W. K. Beans, J. R. Wolfe, S. H. Henderson, A. G. White, L. F. Britt, A. C. Crosthwaite, and D. Marquett.
The report of the committee on Missions was read.
The committees on Examination were appointed.
The statistics were reported.
A. C. Crosthwaite moved that the Secretary be allowed to appoint one from each district on statistics. Carried.
S. H. Henderson moved to omit Table No. III from the printed minutes. Carried.
