IN MEMORIAM

BISHOP E. O. HAVEN, D.D., LL.D.

WHEREAS, It hath pleased Almighty God to remove by death from the scene of his earthly labors our beloved Brother, Bishop E. O. Haven, D.D., LL.D., during the month of July last; therefore be it

Resolved, 1st, That the Church at Large has lost one of her most honored and wise counselors, a faithful administrator and able minister of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Resolved, 2d, That we hereby tender our heartfelt sympathy and love to his bereaved family and to our brethren on the Pacific coast, where he had fixed his residence.

ALBERT L. GOSS.

ALBERT L. GOSS in early life was converted and joined the M. E. Church, which he served for a time as class leader and Sunday School Superintendent. After engaging for awhile in the profession of teaching, he was licensed to preach, and in 1873 was received on trial in the Nebraska Conference, and successively served Roperville, York, and Hebron charges. In 1875 he was admitted into full connection and ordained Deacon. The following year, his health having failed, he took a superannuated relation, which he held until his death, which occurred in Iowa, September 30th, 1880. Brother Goss was a devoted Christian, an earnest minister, and a faithful pastor. In consequence of a feeble constitution, the years of his service were few, and his death early; but while in his death the church sustains a loss, to him it is eternal gain. He leaves a wife and child who demand the prayers, sympathy, and material aid of this Conference.

H. BURCH, Chairman.
C. A. LEWIS, Secretary.

MRS. CLARISSA GIDDINGS.

Mrs. GIDDINGS was born in New York, December 29th, 1810, was converted to God at the age of fifteen, united with the M. E. Church shortly afterward, and remained a consistent member of the same to the close of life. For years she professed and enjoyed the blessing of perfect love. In 1835 she was married to Rev. G. W. Giddings, late of Nebraska Conference, and with him for many years shared the toils and sacrifices of itinerant life. In 1857 they emigrated to Table Rock, Nebraska, where she remained to the day of her death, which was October 17th, 1880. She was a faithful and earnest laborer in all departments of church work, and no place will she be missed more than in the Sunday School. She manifested a deep concern for the salvation of the young. During her last illness she had rest in Christ. As might be expected, her end was peace.

H. BURCH, Chairman.
C. A. LEWIS, Secretary.

ELIPHAZ HIBBARD ROGERS.

ELIPHAZ HIBBARD ROGERS was born in Litchfield, New York. January 12th, 1830, and died in Vera Cruz, Mexico, August 1st, 1881. He obtained a good academic education, and at the age of sixteen engaged in school teaching. and a few years later in the practice of law, in both which professions he was successful. Twenty-five years ago he came to Nebraska and located in the valley of the Platte, where now is the city of Fremont. In 1858 he was elected to the Legislature. From 1863 to 18117 he was County Clerk; and while yet in the office he was elected to the last Territorial Council, and afterward to the first state Senate of Nebraska; and in both bodies he was chosen President, and served with marked ability. At the time of his death he was U. S. Consul at Vera Cruz, Mexico. In early life he became a Christian and a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. His experience was clear, constant, and satisfactory. He never compromised principle for worldly gain. He brought all his secular interests to the bar of an enlightened judgment, and then acted according to its dictates. His piety found intelligent expression in a system of good works. From the first he devoted one-tenth of his income to religious uses. For awhile alter coming to Nebraska that tenth was very small, aril there were urgent demands for it in his family and business; but to his mind and conscience it would have been robbery of God to rise it, and he never did. In all his Christian experience he proved the truthfulness of Paul's teaching, that godliness is profitable to the life that now is. His life was a practical refutation of the popular slander that the children of clergymen are more reckless and more indifferent to sacred things than other children. He was the son of Rev. L. C. Rogers, who spent all the years of his manhood in the Methodist ministry in the State of New York; and our lamented brother grew to man's estate in the home of an itinerant, sharing all of its privations and self-denial. The church loved him and trusted him, and he was twice hay Delegate to the General Conference, serving with marked ability upon one of its most important committees. He was an accomplished orator, a model class leader, a faithful friend, a devoted husband and father, In short, he was a Christian in the best meaning of the term, and the end of that man was peace."
