POPULATION, WEALTH AND DEBT
The population of Nebraska in 1920 was 1,296,372, being an increase of 8.7 per cent over the census of 1910. The city population, including the inhabitants of thirty-one cities and villages of 2,500 population or more constitutes 31.3 per cent of the whole. Twenty-one and three-tenths per cent of the people live in villages of less than 2,400 inhabitants, and the remaining 47.5 per cent live in the country.
Of the total population 11.5 per cent are foreign born white. Sixty-one and six-tenths per cent of the total foreign born white population are naturalized. Thirty-eight and four-tenths per cent are not citizens, though of this number 26.5 per cent have first papers. The estimate of population in 1925 is 1,355,371.
The rapid increase in wealth between 1910 and 1920 rests largely on the increase in the valuation of farm lands. The farm acreage of Nebraska in 1920 was approximately 42,225,475 acres, or 85.9 per cent of the total area of the state. In 1920, 56.0 per cent of all lands in farms was operated by owners, and 42.9 per cent in farms operated by tenants, and 1.1 per cent operated by managers.
The bonded local debt of the counties, cities and villages; school districts, and drainage districts has been incurred chiefly by municipalities and school districts. On June 30, 1926, the state auditor reported a total of $112,426,635 of bonded debt of the political subdivisions of the state as follows: County, $6,917,777; precinct and township, $611,500; irrigation and drainage district, $4,486,607; city and village, $65,244,663; school districts, $35,204,088; total, $112,426,635. The state has no bonded debt.
