GENEALOGICAL RECORD

VOL. VII

LINCOLN, NEBRASKA, APRIL, 1929

NO. 2

THE RATCLIFFE-RATLIFF FAMILY IN THE SOUTH

AND WEST

Compiled by Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth (Wert Smith) Taylor,
of Lincoln, Nebraska

In England this family spelled the name Radcliffe, and in Ye List of Names of Ye Second and Fourth Vessels Chartered by Ye [Virginia] Company in 1620, we find the name of Sir John Radcliffe. Tradition claims him as the father of William, who changed the spelling to Ratcliffe. Later, one of his sons spelled it Ratliff (sometimes Ratliffe), claiming that the original spelling was too difficult. The brothers of William retained the old spelling for some time, so we find the name spelled in three or four ways in many of the old records. Reference will be found to various members of the family in J. C. Hotten's Original Lists of Persons of Quality (1874).

Whether Rodger Ratlife, who was in Georgia in 1619, with Ann, his wife, and Isack, his nine months old son, and Elkinton Ratliffe, who came in the Seafloure in 1624, were of the same family has not been proven. But they were in all probability at least cousins of William, whom the London records list as the son of John, or Sir John, Radcliffe, of Radcliffe Towers.

The Ratliffs (or Radcliffes), who went north into New York and the New England States, as a general rule retained the spelling Radcliffe. Those who remained in the South and the family of William, who migrated west, generally used the spelling Ratcliffe; while the rest of the family who went west usually spelt the name Ratliff.

   1. WILLIAM1 RADCLIFFE, son of John Radcliffe, came to America in one of his own vessels, where he left his wife and small children to establish the home on a tract of land granted by the Crown, near Elizabeth City, North Carolina. He set out to return to England, but his vessel was lost at sea and he was never heard of again. On learning the fate of her husband's ship, his wife set sail, so tradition has it, to return to England to settle her husband's affairs. She, too, was never heard of again.
