NO. 3

A NOTE ON THEOPHILUS BALDWIN AND HIS WIFE
DOROTHY *
By Donald Lines Jacobus, of New Haven, Connecticut

Permit me to correct a statement made on page 41 of volume 7, at the end of the valuable article contributed by Mrs. McHugh of Fort Collins, Colo. This statement is to the effect that Theophilus Baldwin (1699-1784) of Woodbridge, Conn., married Dorothy Munson, and I fear that the statement is based on the account which I gave of the Baldwin family in the New Haven Genealogical Magazine, vol. 1, p. 101, and that I am therefore somewhat responsible for this error. I stated that Theophilus m. "Dorothy [da. John & Sarah (Cooper) Munson]," but in the preface it was explained that material in square brackets was hypothetical and not positively proved. This was true of the hypothetical statement of Dorothy's parentage, and subsequent research proves for Dorothy a different and more exalted ancestry.

Lieut. Thomas3 Treat (1668-1713) of Glastonbury, Conn., son of Richard2 and grandson of Richard1 Treat, a Patentee of the Colony of Connecticut, married Dorothy3 Bulkeley, daughter of Rev. Gershom2 and Sarah (Chauncey) Bulkeley, and grand-daughter of Rev. Peter1 and Grace (Chetwood) Bulkeley, as well as of Rev. Charles Chauncey, President of Harvard College. One of the children of Thomas3 and Dorothy (Bulkeley) Treat was Dorothy4 born at Glastonbury 28 August 1704. The Treat Genealogy, p. 37, tells nothing further of her history. In a conveyance which I discovered at Glastonbury, from Mrs. Dorothy3 Treat to one of her children, she mentioned other children by name, including her daughter Dorothy "Baulding." This was one of the crude misspellings for Baldwin occasionally found in the records.

I have not found any Baldwin with an unidentified wife Dorothy at that period except Theophilus (1699-1784). Their son, Theophilus, Jr., named a son Treat. Now the gravestone of Dorothy, wife of Theophilus, which I have personally ex-

THE NEBRASKA AND MIDWEST

amined, unquestionably states that she died 10 October 1790 age 90. But the gravestone of Theophilus also misstates his age at the round figure of 80. I suspect that these stones were erected by children or grandchildren some years after their death, and that whoever was responsible for the statement of the ages knew them only approximately. For a private mortality list kept in Woodbridge gives Dorothy's age as 86, which exactly accords with the birth of Dorothy Treat in 1704.

Personally, I feel slight hesitation in affirming that the wife of Theophilus Baldwin was Dorothy Treat, who brings to her descendants not only a quartet of "Colonial Dames" ancestors, but most of the Magna Carta barons, and rulers of most European countries.

At the same time I give this interesting information, historical accuracy demands that I question the services on Committees of Inspection attributed to Theophilus Baldwin and his son Richard. Theophilus lived and died in the part of Milford which was known as the parish of Amity until it became the town of Woodbridge. His son, Theophilus, Jr., was married in Woodbridge, but removed to Watertown, where his wife's death was recorded in 1775, and he married there again the following year. Regardless of what Revolutionary societies may have accepted in the past, I conclude that it was the younger Theophilus who served on the Committee in Watertown.

It is also true of Richard Baldwin (1745-1823) that he was born, lived, and died in what is now the town of Woodbridge. A Richard Baldwin of a different branch was located just as certainly in Branford, and it is stretching historic probability to import the Woodbridge Richard into Branford to perform a service which the Branford Richard could just as well have performed.

In reaching conclusions in such matters, it should be borne in mind that as a rule those who served on town committees during the Revolutionary War were permanent residents of the towns they served, and well known to their fellow-townsmen.
