  (b) Ada Vanderkalk taught the first school in Butler Co. It was a subscription school held in a log building, built on Sec 4, Town 16, Range 3 in 1867. The first meeting of the County Commissioners was also held in this building. - Johnson. Harrison, History of Nebraska, pp. 221-2.
  Andreas (p. 449) however states that Mrs. Frances G. Crowley taught a school at her home in Oak Creek Pet. in the winter of 1865-6.
  (c) S. D. Shinn and William Butler came to Butler Co. in 1860. Shinn was afterwards proprietor of Shinn's ferry. The southern terminus of Shinn's ferry was near the home of "Tennis Hoekstra." - Andreas, A. T., History of Nebraska, pp. 448-9. T.

  (h) James Blair and wife of Linwood celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Feb. 16. They were married in Butler Co., Pa., and settled at Linwood in 1858. Among those present were their nephews, A. P. and Philo P. Garfield, who had been present at the wedding. - People's Banner (David City) 1904 Feb. 25, p. 1 (5).
  This family is listed in the 1860 census in Calhoun (now Saunders) Co.: Jaynes Blair, age 26, b. in Pa.; wife, Mary A., b. in Ireland; children, Isabella, age 6, and William, age 4, both born in Pa. - U. S. Census Mss.

  (n) David R. Gardner, son of John and Sabra Gardner, was born in Otsego Co., N. Y., Mar. 24, 1815. His father died when he was four years old and he was raised by an uncle named Hale. His fourth wife, with whom he came to Butler Co. was Miss Sarah Wakefield, whom he married in 1849. He settled in Butler Co. in 1959. - Ibid, pp. 449, 470.

  (v) Abram Towner, b. June is, 1806, Bradford Co., Pa., married there, Jan. 1, 1826, Miss Hester Vought. They moved to Ohio in 1829, to Mo. in 1832 and to Cass Co., Neb., in 1854. He was licensed as a Methodist minister in 1844. His wife died at Rock Bluffs, Feb. 7, 1866, and the following year he settled near Ulysses in Butler Co. He married a second wife in Calif., who lived but a short time. He died at Ulysses, Aug. 29, 1886, survived by seven children, among them Abram and McD. of that place. Cox, W. W., History of Seward County, Nebraska (1888), p. 244.
  (w) James M. Palmer, b. Jan. 27, 1835, Windham Co., Conn., visited Nebraska twice before settling in Butler Co. in 1867. He married, July 2, 1868, Miss Prudence C.. daughter of John and Susan Roberts, early settlers. - Andreas, p. 464. For Roberts family see Cox, pp. 266-7.

  (z) Gilalmous McCarty, b. Oct. 16, 1839, Greencastle, Ind., came to Cass Co., Neb., in 1856, where he remained till 1869. There he married Miss Matilda Reed, a native of Ireland, in 1857. He served in the Civil War in the Fifth Missouri Volunteer Cavalry. He settled in Butler Co. in 1869. - Ibid, p. 464.

(bb) David Read, b. Sept. 8, 1827, Haram, county Suffolk, England. son of Stephen and Mary Read married, Nov. 4, 1850, Miss Jane E. Baker. JOHN¹ TRIPP, PORTSMOUTH, RHODE ISLAND

  I. JOHN¹ TRIPP was born about 1610 in England. In 1638 his name appears on a list of the inhabitants of the island of Aquidneck, at that time within the jurisdiction of Newport, Rhode Island. On April 30, 1639, he with 28 other men signed a compact, which was the beginning of the town government of Portsmouth, in which they acknowledged themselves legal subjects of King Charles. John Tripp in signing this document wrote his name although many of his neighbors simply made their marks. On March 1, 1643, he was granted three acres of land in the town.
  John Tripp married Mary, daughter of Anthony Paine, another of the founders of Portsmouth. She had the unique experience, for a young woman of that time, of owning a piece of land. This she had purchased, previous to her marriage, giving in payment a small quantity of wine. Although the man who conveyed the land, neglected to give her a deed, the colony confirmed her title more than twentyfive years later. The birth dates of none of his children are known and the order of birth is uncertain. Ten grew to maturity and raised families but there may have been others who died in childhood.
  John Tripp lived in Portsmouth for 39 years after he took part in founding the town. His name occurs in the list of freemen of Portsmouth drawn up in 1655. He was a carpenter but like most workmen of his day he probably supported his family chiefly by tilling the soil. He held office in the town from time to time and was for many years a member of the town council. He was deputy for Portsmouth in the General Court, ie. legislature, thirteen times between 1648 and 1675 and in 1656 he served for Providence. He was chosen assistant in 1670, 1673, 1674 and 1675. He seems to have owned considerable

land. At some time or other he bought a tract of land in Dartmouth. then in Plymouth Colony, from John Alden. On September 8, 1665, he deeded one-fourth of this tract to his son Peleg and on May 3, 1671, one-fourth to his son Joseph. John Tripp died in 1678. He was about 68 years of age, for on February 6, 1660, he had testified in court that he was then about 49 year old. His will, made December 6, 1677, was proved October 28, 1678. His widow Mary married, secondly, April 4, 1682, Benjamin Engell. All her children were grown and married by that time.^(a)

II. JOSEPH² TRIPP (John¹) was probobly born at Portsmouth, Rhode Island, say about 1646. He married, August 6, 1667, Mehitable, daughter of Thomas and Mary Fish of Portsmouth. He was made a freeman of Portsmouth, May 4, 1675, which probably indicates that he had lived there up to that time. On May 3, 1671, his father had deeded him land in Dartmouth and eventually he moved to that town, where he was listed as one of the townsmen, March 24, 1686. He probably lived there the rest of his life. He was one of the selectmen of Dartmouth and was deputy for the town in 1685. His marriage and the birth of his children were recorded in Dartmouth, but it seems likely that his marriage and the birth of the older children took place at Portsmouth. Town authorities often recorded the births of all the children of a family, even when many were born elsewhere. Joseph Tripp died at Portsmouth, November 17, 1718. His wife Mehitable was living, December 29, 1713, at the time he made his will.^(b)

III. JONATHAN³ TRIPP (Joseph², John¹) was born October 5, 1671, probably at Portsmouth, Rhode Island. He married, August 22, 1695, probably at Little Compton, Martha, daughter of William and Sarah (Smiton) Brownell, who had been born at Little Compton, May 24, 1678. They lived at Little Compton, but seem to have moved to Dartmouth shortly before his death.^(c) His widow Martha married, secondly, March 29, 1705, Samuel Hart. ^(d)
