FRANK A. DEAN.

      Frank A. Dean, Senator from the Twenty-eighth District, composed of Kearney, Phelps and Harlan counties, was born at La Salle, Illinois, September 28, 1855 His early education was received in the public schools and completed in the University of Illinois, from which he was graduated in the scientific and literary course in the class of 1878. In January, 1889, he came to Nebraska and located at Ulysses, Butler county, where he remained until January, 1888, when he removed to Holdrege, where he has since made his home, and where he is engaged in the hardware business.

      Senator Dean is one of the numerous Republican senators and is now serving his first term. For five terms he has been mayor of the City of Hoidrege. On June 25, 1879, he was married to Miss Cora C. Riggs. Mr. Dean is one of the hard-working members of the Senate.

      Martin Luther Fries, Senator from the Fifteenth District, composed of Custer, Valley, Loup and Blaine counties, is a Virginian by birth. He was born in Winchester, October 15, 1856, Left an orphan in early childhood, his youth was beset with cares and some few hardships. His early education was limited to the advantages afforded by subscription schools. Later in life he worked his way through college, then followed the vocation of a school teacher. Inclined towards the study of law, he entered the law school at Valparaiso, Indiana, but deciding upon a business career, abandoned the study for the bar at the end of a year. From 1883 until 1886 he was president of the Sierra Normal college at Auburn, California. Resigning this position in April, 1886, he located at Arcadia, Nebraska, his present home, and there engaged in the lumber business, in which he has been successful and has built up a large patronage. Senator Fries has always been a Republican. Ho is serving his first term as a member of the Nebraska Legislature. In 1883 he was married to Miss Cora M. Anderson of Streator, Illinois, an old classmate at Valparaiso, and has one child, a daughter, who is now in her seventeenth year.

      William D. Giffin, Senator from the Thirtieth District, composed of Dawson, Lincoln, Keith, Cheyenne, Logan, Scotts Bluff, Banner, Kimball, Deuel, Grant, Hooker, Thomas, McPherson, and Perkins counties, was born at Morning Sun, Iowa, in 1854. He received his education in the public schools and at the college at Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, and Lebanon, Ohio. He attended the law school at Iowa City, from which he was graduated in 1882. For three years he was located, and practiced law at Guthrie Center, Iowa. He came to Nebraska in 1885 and located at Gothenburg, which town has since been his home, and where he has engaged in the practice of his profession and as a dealer in real estate. Mr. Giffin is a Republican but never before was a candidate for any office until chosen to represent his district in the Senate.

      Mr. Giffin was married in 1881, to Miss Clara D. Giffin of Aurora, Indiana.
