JASPER L. MCBRIEN.

      Jasper L. McBrien, Deputy State Superintendent of Schools, was born in Newton county, Missouri, March 19, 1867. His father was a farmer and served in Company K, 15th Missouri Cavalry throughout the Civil war. Mr. McBrien spent his youthful days on his fathers farm and in attendance at the public schools. He came to Nebraska in 1879 and a few years later, was graduated from the Sterling High school, after which he entered Campbell University, at Holton, Kansas, where he took a thorough course of study. Upon leaving the University he commenced school teaching and in 1891 was elected president of the State Teacher's Association. For two terms he was county superintendent of schools in Johnson county. From 1893 to 1897 he was Dean of Orleans Academy, resigning this position to become the superintendent of the Geneva City Schools, which office he filled from 1897 to 1901, when he was appointed Deputy State Superintendent under Superintendent Fowler. Upon the re-election of Mr. Fowler in 1902, Mr. McBrien was re-appointed to the office he now holds. Mr. McBrien was married at Tecumseh, December 29, 1891, to Miss Eva Forbes, and has a family of three children.

NORRIS BROWN.

      Norris Brown, Deputy Attorney General, was born May 2, 1863, at Maquoketa, Iowa. His elementary education was received in the public schools and he was graduated in the classical course from the University of Iowa, in 1883. After leaving the University he entered the office of McDuffie & Howard, at Jefferson, Iowa, where he completed his law studies. He was admitted to practice by the District court of Greene county, Iowa, on October 1, 1883. He commenced the practice of his profession at Perry, Iowa, October 15, 1883, and remained there until April 28, 1888, when he settled at Kearney, Nebraska, where he since has been in practice, associated with his brother, E. F. Brown. Mr. Brown served as county attorney of Buffalo county from January, 1893, until January, 1897. He was appointed Deputy Attorney General January 1, 1901. Mr. Brown has always been an uncompromising Republican and an active worker for his party's good. He was married at Perry, Iowa, October 28, 1885, to Miss Lula K. Beeler, of Perry, Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. Brown are the parents of two children, daughters. Mr. Brown was candidate for Congress in the "Big Sixth" District in 1898 with Hon. William Greene as an opponent, and his debates with Greene created wide attention, and succeeded in largely decreasing the Democratic majority in the district.

WILLIAM B. ROSE.

      William B. Rose, Assistant Attorney General, was born in Grove City, Pennsylvania, January 25, 1862. He received his early education in the public schools of his native place and finished in Grove City College. He studied law and was admitted to practice in the courts of Pennsylvania, December 22, 1888. The first office he ever held was while a student of law, when he served as the chief clerk for the Prothonotary, of Mercer county, Pennsylvania, from 1885 to 1889. In 1889 he came to Nebraska and located in the City of Lincoln. From 1892 to 1898 he was Deputy State Librarian and assistant reporter of the Nebraska Supreme Court. While filling the latter position he edited, digested, and indexed all the opinions of the Supreme Court contained in Volumes 35 to 58, inclusive. Upon the election of General Prout to office in 1900, Mr. Rose became his assistant and has since been continuously connected with the Attorney General's office. He is a Republican.

     Mr. Rose was married November 18, 1893, and his family consists of wife and one daughter.
