Auble purchased back his store at Wolbach. Thereafter he traded that business for a store at Ord, which he operates in association with his brother who is an optician. He and his brother are interested in an all metal marquise, on which they have the patent, which is being made in Hastings.
On February 23, 1914, Mr. Auble was married to Pauline Andrea Hansen, at Grand Island. She was born at Wolbach, December 3, 1894, of Danish parentage. They have three children living, and one deceased: Leota, born May 4, 1916, who is the official piano player in the high school orchestra; Joycelyn, born October 18, 1918, who is first chair flutist; Don, born June 3, 1926; and Jay, Jr, born June 14, 1924, who died in July, 1924.
Mr. Auble is a Republican. He is a Methodist, a Mason, a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Parent-Teachers Association, and the Nebraskana Society. He enjoys golf, and is a member of the Ord Golf Club, while his hobby is mechanics. Residence: Ord.
William Auge
William Auge, son of William and Catherine (Kreuchling) Auge, was born at Ponca, Nebraska, May 4, 1875. His father, a native of Germany, was born in September 1843, and came to Nebraska in 1860. He was a hardware merchant and for ten years was president of the Security Bank of Ponca. His death occurred at Ponca, February 18, 1925. Catherine, wife of William Auge, Sr., was born in Germany, and died at Ponca, in March, 1907.
Educated in the public schools, William Auge, the subject of this sketch, was graduated from Ponca High School in 1892. He was the editor of the school paper and active in school affairs.
On September 22, 1897, he was united in marriage to Emma Drazer at Ponca. Mrs. Auge was born at Martinsburg, June 14, 1875. There is one son, Maxwell, born May 1, 1905, who is a college graduate, and attended the University of Chicago two years. He is engaged in the brokerage business, also.
Mr. Auge is a member of the Salem Lutheran Church, the church choir, and the Masons. His sports are golf, tennis and baseball. Residence: Ponca.
Ernest Webster Augustine
Ernest Webster Augustine, son of Irving Milton and Alice Tabitha (Fitzsimons) Augustine, was born at Bruning, Nebraska, September 13, 1886. His father, born at Grantsville, Maryland. December 28, 1862, is one of Grand Island's most outstanding citizens. For a number of years a newspaper publisher, he is now general manager of The Augustine Company (see Nebraskana). His mother, who is of Irish descent, was born at Mineral Point, Wisconsin, July 3, 1860.
Educated in the public schools of Grand Island, Ernest Webster Augustine afterward attended Grand Island College. He was co-editor of the Free Press from 1908-12, and in 1908, in conjunction with his father, I. M. Augustine, established The Augustine Company, of which he has since been general manager. This organization manufacturers advertising, calendars, specialties, and various lines of specialty printing.
In addition Mr. Augustine is a director of the Commercial Bank of Grand Island. He is a trustee of Grand Island College, was for a number of years a director of the Chamber of Commerce, and is now a director of the Rotary Club. A former vice president of the local Young Men's Christian Association, he was chairman of the building committee at the time the new building was erected. He is a member of the state committee of the Young Men's Christian Association, has been trustee and treasurer of St. Paul's English Lutheran Church for more than twenty years, and is a Mason (Blue Lodge, Chapter, Knight Templar and Shrine).
A member of the Hall County Historical Society, he is a life member of the Nebraskana Society, this recognition having been given him for his participation in civic and community projects over a long period of years. Mr. Augustine is a heavy real estate holder, and in 1925 erected one of the finest homes in the city. He is a member of the Riverside Country Club, and a Democrat.
On June 15, 1910, he was married to Pernelia Mercedes Spethman, at Grand Island. Mrs. Augustine, who is of German descent, was born at North Loup, Nebraska, July 17, 1886. There are three children: Mercedes, born April 12, 1912, who will graduate this year from Ward Belmont, at Nashville, Tennessee; Webster, born September 24, 1918; and Ernest, Jr., born May 29, 1925. Residence: Grand Island.
Irving Milton Augustine
Irving Milton Augustine, for many years one of the most prominent newspaper men in Nebraska, was born at Grantsville, Maryland, December 28, 1861.
He is the son of Isaac Newton and Amanda Jane (Shultz) Augustine, the former a Lutheran minister who at one time published the Western Independent Lutheran. Isaac Newton Augustine was born at Petersburg, Pennsylvania, February 9, 1833, and died at Grand Island, on July 2, 1921. His wife, Amanda Jane, was born at Salisbury, Pennsylvania, October 16, 1835, and died at Grand Island, March 18, 1915. A true minister's wife, she was helpful to him in his work. She was of Pennsylvania Dutch descent.
Irving Milton Augustine was graduated from high school at Hebron, Nebraska, in the 1880's, and attended the University of Nebraska one semester. On November 12, 1885, he was married to Alice Tabitha Fitzsimons, at Carleton, Nebraska. Mrs. Augustine, who is of Irish descent, was born at Mineral Point, Wisconsin, July 3, 1861.
To this union five children were born: Ernest Webster, born on September 13, 1886, who married Pernelia Spethman; Olive Dell, born December 7, 1887, unmarried; Raymond Lloyd, born January 17, 1890, who died September 5, 1898; Howard Milton, born January 14, 1892, who married Dorothy Lynn; and Irving DelMar, born November 29, 1897, who married Ruth M. Mayer.
A staunch Democrat, Mr. Augustine was for a number of years the publisher of the Grand Island Free Press and the Daily Republican both Democratic, and strong in their support of Democratic principles.
Now retired, Mr. Augustine formerly published the Bruning Enterprise, the Doniphan Eagle, the Free Press and the Daily Republican. Upon retiring from the newspaper field Mr. Augustine, with his son, Ernest, founded the Augustine Company, a co-partnership between father and sons, and long recognized as among the strongest and most successful institutions of its kind in the state. He is, in addition to his holdings in the Augustine Company, a stockholder in the Commercial Bank and Building and Loan Association of Grand Island.
Affiliated with St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, for his fidelity and long efficient service, the congregation elected him as a life member of its council. He is a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Hall County Historical Association, the Ancient Order of United Workmen and The Nebraskana Society. His social club is the Riverside Golf Club, and his favorite sports are golf and fishing.
The author of several unpublished manuscripts, he devotes much of his leisure time to writing and expects to publish his works. Residence: Grand Island. (Photograph on Page 53).
James W. Auld
James W. Auld, banker, was born in Marion County, Iowa, April 27, 1876, son of Benjamin G. and Mary M. (Schmidt) Auld.
He was educated in the public schools of Iowa, and in 1893 came to Nebraska. Five years later he established his residence at Red Cloud, and became associated
