John A. Bentley

John Alexander Bentley, real estate operator, was born at Tama, Iowa, May 17, 1876, and has resided in Nebraska for the past 25 years. He is the son of C. Byron and Sarah A. (Carroll) Bentley, the former of who, was born at Dayton, Ohio, in November, 1840. He was a brick manufacturer and contractor, a leading Republican and a member of the township board, the school board and the board of alderman. He filled all chairs in the Odd Fellows Lodge. His ancestry was English and Scotch, and he was the son of J. A. and Maria (Ogan) Bentley, the former of Green County, Ohio, and the latter of Kentucky.

Sarah A. Carroll was born in Georgetown, Ohio, in 1843, and died at Tama, Iowa, December 15, 1908. She was an active clubwoman and church worker and the daughter of J. H. Carroll of Georgetown, Ohio, who was a descendant of Charles Carrol of Carrolton a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

John Alexander Bentley attended grammar and high school at Tama, Iowa, and was graduated from Western College at Toledo, Iowa, from which he received his business degree.

On June 3, 1896, he was married to Bertha Mae Phillips at Toledo, Iowa. Mrs. Bentley was born at Toledo, April 3, 1876, daughter of Alford and Ella (Clark) Phillips and granddaughter of Gains and Mary (Kountz) Allison of Easton, Pennsylvania. To Mr. and Mrs. Bentley were born four children, Alford Phillips, March 23, 1897, who died May 30, 1919; Charlton Blair, born November 29, 1898, whose first wife was Sybil Rood and his second wife was Beata Busenbark; Genevieve Allison, March 7, 1901, who married Carter H. Dunaway; and Leslie Eugene, born April 1, 1906.

Mr. Bentley is a Republican. He is an extensive real estate operator and active in the development of land in western Nebraska, eastern Colorado, and western Kansas. He is president of the Bentley Land Company and has indirect connections with the Equitable Life Insurance Company of Iowa, and the Struble and Stiger Loan Company of Toledo.

He is a member of the Methodist Church, the Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club (retired), the Masons, the Modern Woodmen of America, the Nebraskana Society, and for a number of years was a member of the school board. He is a member of the Sidney Country Club and member of its board of directors and one of its former presidents, He enjoys sports and horses, and is a member of the (;on Club. Residence: Sidney. John Schuyler Bentley

John S. Bentley, newspaper man and sports editor of the Nebraska State Journel, was born at Hutchinson, Reno County Kansas October 19, 1898, the son of George Smith and Cora (Button) Bentley. His father was born at Aledo, Illinois, and died at Hutchinson.

Mr. Bentley attended the grade school at Hutchinson, and in 1916 was graduated from the Hutchinson High School. Later he was a student at the University of Nebraska, where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi. He has been connected with the Nebraska State Journal for the past ten years as sports editor. He was advertising manager of the First Trust Company of Lincoln for one year.

On March 15, 1924, he was married to Ethel Elmira Weidner at Kansas City, Missouri. Mrs. Bentley was born at Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska. During the World War Mr. Bentley served as coxswain in the United States Naval Reserve Forces. He is a Mason. Politically, he is a Republican. His favorite sport in golfing, and his hobby reading. Residence: Lincoln.

Seward Ralph Benton

One of the prominent bankers of Hall County, Nebraska, is Seward Ralph Benton who was born in that county, October 17, 1885, the son of Charles Seward and Ida Maria (Squire) Benton. His father, a farmer, was born at Lowville, New York, July 27, 1844, homesteaded in Hall County in 1872, and died at Cairo, Nebraska, July 11, 1913. His English ancestors came to this country in 1633. Ida (Squire) Benton, who was born at Portage County, Wisconsin, October 5, 1859, and is still living, is a devoted home-maker.

Mr. Benton was a stenographer for the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad at Alliance, Nebraska, from 1902 to 1904, engaged in farming, 1904-05, and from 1905 to 1912, was an implement and automobile dealer at Cairo. He managed his ranch in Keith County, Nebraska, from 1912 to 1915, and at this time is vice president and director of the State Bank of Cairo, Nebraska.

He holds membership in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and is affiliated with the Nebraskana Society. His favorite sport is golfing. Politically, Mr. Benton is a Republican.

His marriage to Grace Mae Sponsler was solemnized at Cairo, September 25, 1907. Mrs. Benton was born at Riverton, Illinois, May 7, 1890. They have two children: Charles William, born April 3, 1910, who married Evelyn Mary Smith, and who is a farmer near Cairo, and Jane Helen, born April 23, 1922. Residence: Cairo.

Joseph Venceslaus Beran

Joseph Venceslaus Beran, farmer and railway agent, was born on a farm near Ord, November 19, 1895, son of Joseph V. and Vernie (Petska) Beran. The father was born in Bohemia, May 11, 1873, and in 1891 came to the United States. He is now a retired farmer. His wife, Vernie, was born in Iowa, September 19, 1875. Her ancestry is Bohemian.

On June 3, 1910, Mr. Beran was graduated from high school at Ord, and on June 12, 1912, was graduated from Spalding College. Since that time he has been a farmer and railway agent for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad.

His marriage to Eva Dominica Kalkowski was solemnized at Ashton, June 3, 1919. Mrs. Beran was born at Ashton, April 7, 1897, of Polish descent. They have six children all living, Emanuel, born April 12, 1920; Raymond, born May 27, 1922; Joseph, born October 4, 1924; Ivan, born October 15, 1926; Catherine, born February 14, 1930; and Phyllis, born February 14, 1930.

Mr. Beran is a member of St. Francis Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. His favorite sport is football, while his hobby is mechanics. During the late war he was a member of the Home Guards. Residence: Ashton.

Theophil Herman Berg

Born at Augusta, Missouri, October 18, 1879, Theophil H. Berg has been a resident of Nebraska, since 1883, and city clerk of Lincoln, since 1913. He is the son of John and Emily Katharine (Beimdick) Berg, the former a native of Germany, born November 24, 1834. He came to America as a child, and served in the Missouri Home
