Nelson Bishop was a rural mail carrier for twelve years, was in the merchandising business for a year. He has been a farmer for some time.
From September 1899-1901 he served in the Philippine Insurrection as a private in Company D of the Thirty-ninth Infantry. He is a member of Camp Lewis of the Spanish War Veterans, at Lincoln.
He is affiliated with the First Methodist Episcopal Church at Pleasant Dale, is a member of the Commercial Club and the Parent Teachers' Association; holds membership in the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons and is a member of the Nebraskana Society. Residence: Pleasant Dale.
Arthur Herbert Bivans
Arthur Herbert Bivans, son of George G. and Elizabeth (Campbell) Bivans was born at Trinidad, Colorado, July 16, 1891. His father was born in Ohio, May 26, 1858, and died at Guthrie, Oklahoma, in September, 1905. He was a teacher in the public schools of Georgetown, Ohio, and later a paperhanger, painter and farmer. His Scotch-Irish and English ancestors have been in America several generations.
Elizabeth Campbell was born in West Virginia, May 29, 1861, and died at Miami, Florida, February 27, 1930. Before her marriage she was a teacher in schools in eastern Nebraska. She was a direct descendant of John and Priscilla Alden, who came over on the Mayflower in 1620.
On October 21, 1914, Mr. Bivans was married to Venola Julia Lewis at Ojus, Florida, and came to North Platte in October, 1918. Mrs. Bivans was born at Santa Ana, California, September 18, 1887. She was a graduate of the high school at Downs, Kansas, attended Washburn College at Topeka, Kansas, and before her marriage was a public school teacher. She traces her genealogy to early colonial settlers from England, and her ancestry on her father's side is Welsh and French. She is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, the Women's Home Missionary Society, the Nebraska Federation of Women's Clubs, and the Parent Teachers' Association. At the present time she is engaged in welfare work for the benefit of the unemployed under the supervision of the Parent Teachers' Association and the North Platte Woman's Club. They have three children, Margaret, born July 18, 1915, who is valedictorian of her class of 1932 of which there are 111 members; Roberta, born May 14, 1918; and Caryl, born May 5, 1924.
Mr. Bivans is a Republican. He has been city letter carrier at North Platte for the past eleven years, and is a member of the First Methodist Episcopal Church. Since 1920 he has been a member of the official board of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Since 1925 he has been chairman of the world's service committee and since that time has been treasurer of the Sunday School. During 1930 and 1931 he was secretary and treasurer of the Inter-church Reserve, and at the present time is serving as vice-president.
During 1929, 1930 and 1931, Mr. Bivans was vice president of the Nebraska State Association of the National Association of Letter Carriers. He is serving as its president at the present time. He is also a member of the Parent Teachers Association. His favorite sports are tennis and croquet. Residence: North Platte. (Photograph in Album).
Ammi Leander Bixby
Ammi Leander Bixby, one of Nebraska's leading columnists and editors, was born at Potsdam, New York, April 21, 1856, son of Alfred and Catharine (Wilison) Bixby. His father, born at Jerico, Vermont, February 17, 1815, was a farmer and stock raiser, and a descendant of Joseph Bixby who came to America in 1640. He died at Pawnee Reservation, August 21, 1878. His wife, Catharine, was born at Sharon, Vermont, April 26, 1818. She was a teacher and singer. The family came from Leeds, England, and settled in America, in 1638. She died at Garrison, Nebraska, January 10, 1899.
Ammi L. Bixby received his education in the common schools and attended medical college one year. In 1881, he started in the newspaper game at Fullerton, Nebraska and was in business for himself at various places in Nebraska and Colorado, over a period of years. Since 1899 he has been associated with the Nebraska State Journal, of which he is now associate editor. He is the author of' Driftwood, Memories, Bix Abroad, Bix in America, etc., and is an extensive reader and lecturer.
He was married to Mary Adel Bates at Fairmont, Minnesota, May 14, 1878. Mrs. Bixby, who was born at Dodgville, Wisconsin, June 21, 1856, died at Lincoln, on March 8, 1928. There were five children born to their marriage, four of whom are living: Alfred Leroy, born August 29, 1879; Anna Katherine, born December 10 1880; Florence Lillian, born April 10, 1883, who died August 27, 1894: Bessie May, born September 17, 1884, and Alice Lorena, born October 7, 1891.
Mr. Bixby is a Republican, but has never aspired to public office. He is a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, and served as state president one year. He holds honorary membership in the Hiram and Kiwanis Clubs, and is a Mason and Modern Woodman of America. For several years he was a member of the Lincoln Board of Education, and he is now a member of the State Historical and the Nebraskana Societies. The family attends Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church. Mr. Bixby is a member of the Laymen's Club. His hobby is decent behavior. Residence: Lincoln.
Joseph Bixby
Joseph Bixby, distinguished physician and surgeon of Nebraska, was born at Minonk, Illinois, June 27, 1871, the son of Joseph and Sarah (Todd) Bixby. His father, who was born at Kenne, New Hampshire, November 9, 1833, and died at Diller, Nebraska, August 28, 1897, was a seaman on a whaling ship, serving later as assistant engineer for the Tiffin and Ohio Railroad; he was consecutively a farmer, grain dealer, and hardware merchant, and served as past chancellor of the Knights of Pythias and past master of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons. He was descended from Joseph Bixby who was born at Little Waldinford, England, in 1620; the first Bixby came to America in 1647.
Sarah (Todd) Bixby, mother of Dr. Bixby, was born in McComb County, Ohio, July 15, 1836, and died at Strang, Nebraska, March 21, 1900. She was active in the Order of Eastern Star, Woman's Relief Corp, the Women's Christian Temperance Union, and the Methodist Church. She was a member of the distinguished Todd family of Ohio, and was a cousin of the second wife of Abraham Lincoln.
Dr. Bixby attended public school, was graduated from Lincoln Business College, and was a student at the University of Nebraska. In 1900 he was graduated from the University Medical College at Kansas City. He has been engaged in the practice of medicine and surgery continuously since 1900, has numerous farming interests in Fillmore County, and is vice president and director of the Western Union Life Insurance Company of Lincoln, Nebraska.&
He holds membership in the Nebraska State Medical Association of which he is past vice president, the American Medical Association, the Fillmore County Medical Society, Red Cross, and the Young Men's Christian Association. Dr. Bixby is president of the Geneva Chamber of Commerce, is a member of the Nebraskana Society,
