January 9, 1905. She was a rural school teacher in younger days, and was later president of the local Women's Christian Temperance Union. Her ancestry was traced to the Norsemen.
Frank Thurston Gifford attended public school, and soon thereafter became a farmer. He was the owner and manager of a stockyards at Burwell for five years, and at the present time has extensive farming interests and serves as solicitor for the Nebraska Producers Commission firm of Omaha.
On January 19, 1905, he was married to Opal Vero Garnick at Ord. Mrs. Gifford, who is of English descent, was born at Ceresco, Nebraska, July 22, 1882. There are two children, Thurston, born October 14, 1906; and Gail, born April 5, 1911.
Mr. Gifford is a Democrat. He was recently made a life member of the Nebraskana Society. His favorite recreation is reading. Residence: Ord.
Sanford Robinson Gifford
Sanford Robinson Gifford, physician and surgeon, was born at Omaha, Nebraska, January 8, 1892, the son of Harold and Mary Louise (Millard) Gifford.
His father, who was born November 14, 1858, is now deceased. He received his education from Cornell University and the University of Michigan, and was one of the most prominent physicians of the state, a specialist in diseases of the eye. His wife, Mary, was born May 1, 1864.
Dr. Gifford received the Bachelor of Arts degree at Cornell University in 1913, and his medical degree from the University of Nebraska in 1918. In 1923 he received the Master of Science degree from the University of Nebraska.
His marriage to Mary Alice Carter was solemnized on July 11, 1917. Dr. Gifford is the author of scientific articles pertaining to opthalmology. He is a member of the firm of Drs. Gifford, Patton, Callfas, and Potts, and during the World War held the rank of first lieutenant in the medical corps. Residence: Omaha.
Clair Vernon Gilbert
Clair Vernon Gilbert was born at Fitchburg, Wisconsin, December 17, 1885, the son of Charles Lafayette and Mary Ella (Shaw) Gilbert. His father, who was a farmer, was born at Steuben, New York, June 15, 1842. He was a veteran of the Civil War and served four and a half years in the 8th Wisconsin, Eagle Regiment. He died at Grand Island, Nebraska, February 14, 1929. His wife, Mary Ella, was born at Janesville, Wisconsin, February 22, 1852, and died at Broadwater, Nebraska, March 26, 1912.
Mr. Gilbert, who operates three farms in Morrill County, Nebraska, was a student at the Kansas State Agricultural College for a time. He homesteaded in Morrill County in 1908, was a garage proprietor until 1918, and since then has been assistant postmaster at Broadwater. He is precinct committeeman, is a member of the Chamber of Commerce, and holds membership in the Woodmen of the World and the Masonic Lodge, (32nd degree and Shrine). His hobby is golfing.
His marriage to Eva May Hickman was solemnized at Phillipshurg, Kansas, July 9, 1905. Mrs. Gilbert, who is a teacher and has served as postmaster at Broadwater since 1919, was born at Russell, Iowa, November 15, 1886. She is the daughter of the Reverend Thomas M. Rickman, state temperance lecturer for the Women's Christian Temperance Union in Ohio. He was a Baptist minister at Ames, removing to Manhattan, Kansas, where he was a minister for five years. Joshua D. Hickman, brother of Mrs. Gilbert's father, was superintendent of printing on the faculty at Kansas State Agricultural College for 17 years. Her mother was Mary Ann Stolte, who was of German descent. Residence: Broadwater.
Emma Crooks Gilbert
Emma Crooks Gilbert, dean of Women at Nebraska Wesleyan University, has lived in this state for the past 42 years. She was born near Gunnison, Colorado, July 18, 1879, the daughter of John Thornton and Mary Ann (Ghent) Crooks. Her father, who was a clergyman, was born in Virginia, January 15, 1857, and died at Pilger, Stanton County, Nebraska, September 10, 1896; he was of Scotch descent. Her mother, who is Irish, was born at Greenup, Kentucky, December 27, 1859.
Mrs. Gilbert attended the public schools of Colorado, was a student in the schools at Scribner, Nebraska, and in 1895 was graduated from the Pilger High School. She attended Nebraska Wesleyan University for a time where she held membership in Alpha Delta Theta. She has been dean of women at Nebraska Wesleyan for several years.
She was united in marriage with Marvin Edwin Gilbert at Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska, January 8, 1902. Dr. Gilbert, who was born at Sidney, New York, October 16, 1873, is a distinguished clergyman and educator at Nebraska Wesleyan University. Two children were born to this marriage. John Dawson, who was born October 5, 1903, was a student at Nebraska Wesleyan University and Syracuse University, and was married to Marjorie B. Miltz; he died March 20, 1930. Lauren Edwin, born April 8, 1911, was graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University at the age of 19; he was awarded Phi Beta Kappa membership.
Mrs. Gilbert is a member of the National Association of Deans of Women; is affiliated with the First Methodist Church of Lincoln; holds membership in the Nebraskana Society; and is a member of the local Red Cross organization. She is at present state president of the P. E. O.; is Young Women's Christian Association advisor; and is a member of the Eastern Star. She is a Republican. Residence: Lincoln.
Marvin Edwin Gilbert
For the past 50 years Marvin E. Gilbert has lived in Nebraska and for over 30 years has taken an active part in the religious and educational life of the state He was born at Sidney, Delaware County, New York, October 16, 1873, the son of Henry William and Sarah Ann (Wells) Gilbert. His father, who was born in Delaware County in 1835, and died at Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska, 1918, was a carpenter; he served with the First New York Engineers; his ancestry was Scotch Irish.
His mother was born in Delaware County, May, 1837, and died at Weeping Water, Cass County, Nebraska, 1899. She held membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Dr. Gilbert was a student in the public schools of Weeping Water and in 1900 was graduated from the Wesleyan University High School. He was awarded the B. S. degree at Nebraska Wesleyan University in 1906, and the D. D. degree, 1916. He attended the University of Nebraska for a time. During his college career he served as class president in his junior year; was a member of the debating team for two years; received college letters from Nebraska Wesleyan University and the University of Nebraska; and was a member of Phi Kappa Tau.
Since 1899 he has been a minister in the Nebraska Conference. He served as district superintendent for 12 years in three different districts, and for the past six years has been secretary of the extension department at Nebraska Wesleyan University. He is a member of the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce; the Young Men's Christian Association; the National Travel Club; and the Nebraskana Society. He is affiliated with the

Methodist Episcopal Church and holds membership in the following fraternal organizations: Masons; Eastern Star; and the Lions Club. He is a Republican.
His marriage to Emma Frances Crooks was solemnized at Lincoln, Nebraska, January 8, 1902. William Henry Gildersleeve
For the past 49 years William H. Gildersleeve has lived in Nebraska where he is known as a successful stockman and landowner. He was born at St. Charles, King County, Illinois, March 29, 1860, the son of Moses and Eliza Bell Gildersleeve. His father, who was a farmer, was born at East Northport, New York, March 10, 1829, and died at Wayne, Nebraska, January 26, 1892. He was descended from the Gildersleeve family of England, which in the year of 1165 was called Gyldersieve. Sirvase Paganet de Gyldersleve, an ancestor, was cup bearer to the king from 1165 to 1200. In 1932 members of the family settled in Long Island; members of the Paganet family were descended from Ahlmen, King of Kent, 775-95.
Mr. Gildersleeve was active during the World War in the sale of loan bonds, and was especially prominent in the Young Men's Christian Association drives. He is affiliated with the First Presbyterian Church, is a member of the Nebraskana Society, and holds membership in the Red Cross. His sports include motoring and fishing.
He was united in marriage with Mary Catherine Cunningham at Wayne, June 16, 1884. Mrs. Gildersleeve, who is the daughter of David and Virginia Cunningham was born at Mifflinton, February 8, 1863. Their children are as follows: Alice Mae, born April 9, 1886, who married Lee A. Young; Franklin, born July. 3, 1888, who died June 10, 1910; CelIa Bell, born November 23, 1891, who married Harry F. Radaker; Lloyd, born July 20, 1893, who died November 25, 1918; Wilma Evelyn, born July 12, 1903, and Elizabeth, born July 2, 1900, who married J. R. Phillips. Wilma is secretary to the president of Doane College at Crete.
Mr. Gildersleeve is a Republican. He is still actively engaged in the cattle business. Residence: Wayne.
Herbert Session Giles
Born at Friend, Nebraska, June 13, 1888, Herbert Session Giles is a life resident of Nebraska. His father, Daniel Samuel Giles was a farmer of Pennsylvania Dutch descent, born at Pulaski, Iowa, January 17, 1863. He died at Juniata on January 7, 1926. His mother, Olive Lena Lancaster, was born at Moweaqua, Illinois, January 1, 1870, and is of English, Irish and Dutch extraction,
Herbert S. Giles received his education in the public schools of Juniata, and entered upon his life as a farmer.
On August 26, 1908, he was married to Charity W. Benight at Juniata. Mrs. Giles, whose father was a veteran of the Civil War, was born in Brooks, Iowa, August 22, 1890. There are three children: Wayne, born May 15, 1909, married Ruth Jones; Melvin, born October 6, 1911; and Harley, born October 1913. Wayne attended Hastings College and the Georgia School of Technology, while Melvin and Harley are students at Hastings College at the present time.
Mr. Giles is a member of the Juniata Methodist Episcopal Church, the Modern Woodmen of America, the Nebraskana Society, the Parent Teachers Association and the local school board of which he is president. His hobby is mechanics. Residence: Juniata.
James Skewis Gilham
One of the outstanding leaders in the professional and political world of Nebraska is James Skewis Gilham who has been a resident of this state for the past 57 years. He was born at Shullsburg, Wisconsin, January 14, 1852, the son of William and Anne (Skewis) Gilham. His father, who was a miner, was born at Canterbury, England, October 16, 1817, and came to the United States in 1848; he died at Red Cloud, Nebraska, May 31, 1880. His mother was born at Camborne, England, September 1, 1822, and died at Red Cloud, April 20, 1915; she came to this country in 1849.
Mr. Gilham attended school at Shullsburg, Wisconsin, and in 1872 received the A. B. degree at Beloit College. Since 1874 when he was admitted to the bar; he has been a prominent lawyer at Red Cloud and has been distinguished as an energetic and progressive citizen of Webster County. He is known as one of the leaders in the promotion of the Republican Valley and is recognized throughout the state for his oratorical and literary ability.
He served as a member of the state legislature of Nebraska, in 1877, the youngest man to serve in any Nebraska law body, was county superintendent of Webster County in 1876, and served as county attorney in 1886. He is the author of an essay on Bryan's Prince of Peace. Mr. Gilham is nominally president of the local bar association at Red Cloud, is president of the Webster County Old Settlers Club, and holds membership in the Nebraskana Society. He is a Mason. In 1892 he served as a member of the school board in his community.
On June 20, 1877, he was married to Eliza Elinor Tulleys at Red Cloud.
Mrs. Gilham, who was the daughter of Dr. W. I. Tulleys, and is descended from the southern Lee family, was born at Clinton, Illinois, March 17, 1860, and died at Red Cloud, February 18, 1925. Three children were born: Anna Josephine, born August 18, 1880, who died February 21, 1900; Harry Tulleys, born August 25, 1886, who married Edith Ranney; and James Edward, born February 15, 1891, who died August 15, 1893. Residence: Red Cloud.
Samuel Earl Gilinsky
Samuel E. Gilinsky was born at Council Bluffs, Iowa, June 1, 1885, the son of Barney and Lena (Levy) Gilinsky. His mother, was born in the west suburb of Warsaw, Poland, March 4, 1862, and died at Council Bluffs, November 20, 1928. His father in the east suburb of Warsaw, December 10, 1861.
In 1902 Mr. Gilinsky was graduated from the Council Bluffs High School. He has been a resident of Nebraska since 1918, and has been active in Omaha's welfare and commercial affairs since that date. He is now president of the Gilinsky Fruit Company of Omaha.
He was united in marriage with Minnie Zemurray at New Orleans, Louisiana, December 26, 1917. Mrs. Gilinsky was born at Selma, Alabama, April 22, 1893. They have three children: Armand, born September 24, 1918; Sari, born November 8, 1920, and Morton Lewis, born February 9, 1924.
Mr. Gilinsky is a member of the Jewish Welfare Society at Omaha. His social clubs are: Highland Club; and Omaha Athletic Club. He is affiliated with Temple Israel at Omaha. His hobby is reading. He is a Republican, and a member of the Chamber of Commerce. Residence: Omaha.
J. S. Gill
J. S. Gill, successful farmer and livestock feeder of Burt County, Nebraska, has lived in this state for the past 46 years. He was born at Mont Clair, Indiana, December 4, 1880, the son of J. T. Gill and Mary Isabelle (Weddle) Gill. His father, whose ancestry is Scotch and Irish, was born at Floyd, Floyd County, Virginia, April 16, 1855. His mother was born at Floyd, January 11, 1859, and died at Tekamah, Burt County, Nebraska, September 19, 1927; she was of German descent.
Mr. Gill is now serving as county supervisor of Burt County, is president of the Burt County Cooperative Oil Company which was organized five years ago, and is a member of the Tekamah Chamber of Commerce in which he has held various offices. He holds membership in the Red Cross, Nebraska State Historical Society, Nebraskana Society, Odd Fellows, and the Silver Creek Baptist Church. He has been treasurer of the local school board for 17 years and for the past three years has served as director. His hobby is reading.
His marriage to Dora Heth was solemnized at Clarence, Cedar County, Iowa, March 8, 1904. Mrs. Gill, who was formerly a teacher, was born of English and German parents at Clarence, January 6, 1881. Six children were born to this marriage: Ina Imogene, born December 1, 1905, who died March 17, 1906; Clarence H., born August 17, 1908; Glenn T., born March 8, 1910; James T., born July 5, 1918; Virginia B., born September 10, 1911; and Anna Belle, born February 6. Mr. Giill (sic) is a Democrat. Residence: Tekamah.
James Ward Gill
Born at Tekamah, Nebraska, December 1, 1880, James Ward Gill has been a practicing physician and surgeon since September, 11, 1912. His father, Thomas H. Gill, a native of Pennsylvania, was born December 5, 1842, and resides at Tekamah. He is a retired farmer and a veteran of the Civil War, of Scotch-Irish and Pennsylvania German descent.
Margaret Ann Cornelius, his wife, was born in Pennsylvania, April 16, 1852, and died at Tekamah, April 1, 1925. She was also of Scotch-Irish and Pennsylvania German descent.
James Ward Gill was graduated from high school at Tekamah in 1896, and received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Cotner University in 1912. He was offered valedictory honors in college, but declined in favor of Dr. H. R. Murphy of Singapore, India. He is a member of Tau Alpha Epsilon.
Dr. Gill was married to Bertha Marie Wetz at Omaha, June 14, 1911, and to them four children were born, one of whom is living: Melba, born September 29, 1922; Olline, born March 18, 1914, died at birth; Lorraine, born August 5, 1916, died July 21, 1919; and Nadine, born January 30, 1918, died October 15, 1920.
Dr. Gill has been an outstanding figure in community affairs for a number of years. He has been chairman of the village board for ten years, director of the school board ten years, and for four years has been president of the 8th Councilor District Medical Society.
Vice president of the Holt County chapter of the American Red Cross, he is a member of the Nebraska State and Holt County Medical Associations, and is a member of the Parent Teachers Association, the Nebraskana Society, the Garfield Lodge No. 95 of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons and the Medical Officers Reserve. Dr. Gill has served two enlistments in the Nebraska National Guard, with Company F, 2nd Regiment, enlisting as a private and being promoted to the rank of sergeant. Residence: Chambers.
Gale Harold Gillan
Gale Harold Gillan, executive, was born near York, Nebraska, May 10, 1904, son of Samuel Wallace and Mary (Hammond) Gillan. His father, born in Balleymena, County Antrim, Ireland, February 8, 1871, came to America with his father, Alex Gillan, settling in Illinois, in 1873, arriving on June 16. Coming to Nebraska in 1883 he engaged in farming until 1920, and since that time has been in the wholesale bakery business.
Mary Hammond Gillan was born in Exeter, Nebraska, January 25, 1875. Her father, Henry Hammond, was kidnapped at the age of seven, escaped at the age of 14, when he enlisted in the Union Army and served four years in the Civil War. Thereafter he came to Nebraska, homesteaded and married here, and reared his family. Mary Hammond is active in club work, and is a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Women's Relief Corps, the Does and others.
Educated in the public schools of District 14 in York County until 1919, Gale H. Gillan attended Exeter High School in 1919-20, and was graduated from York High School in 1928. In 1927 he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from the University of Nebraska, and in 1929, attended the United Brethren College at York, taking post graduate work. Mr. Gillan is a member of Sigma Nu, and at Exter was a member of the football team; at York was a member of the football, basketball and baseball teams.
After his graduation in 1927, Mr. Gillan became manager of and partner in the York Sanitary Bakery (wholesale and retail), continuing to date. On August 3, 1930, he was united in marriage to Katherine Margaret Reynolds at Seward. Mrs. Gillan was born at Seward, October 21, 1909.
Mr. Gillan is a Democrat. His religious affiliation is with the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church at York. A member of the Elks, he has been an officer of his local lodge since 1928. He belongs to the Young Men's Christian Association, the Rotary Club, and the Nebraskana Society, and has held the office of vice-president in the Northwest District of Nebraska Master Bakers Association the years of 1930, 1931.
A member of the board of directors of the York County Commercial Club 1929-31, he is now serving as vice president of the organization. Interested in travel, reading and civic work, Mr. Gillan enjoys golf, handball and volleyball. Residence: York.
Trevelyan Erwin Gillaspie
Trevelyan E. Gillaspie was born at Victor, Iowa, June 9, 1892, the son of Thomas Erwin and Nora Almeda (Atherton) Gillaspie. His father, who is a life insurance man, was born in Iowa County, Iowa, June 5, 1868, of Scotch descent. His mother, who is of Pennsylvania Dutch descent, was born in Poweshiek, Iowa, May 5, 1870.
Mr. Gillaspie was graduated from high school in 1909, and in 1910 was graduated from commercial college. He has lived in Nebraska for the last 16 years, and is now postmaster at Lincoln. A Republican, he served as city commissioner of Lincoln, in 1926, 27, 28.
His marriage to Ivy May Waller was solemnized at Clear Lake, Cerro Gordo County, Iowa, June 25, 1914. Mrs. Gillaspie was born at Clear Lake, July 7th, 1894. Their three children are: Donita Waller, born July 14, 1915; Robert Emmett, born April 29, 1922; and Patricia May, born May 26, 1926.
In the World War Mr. Gillaspie was in the United States Naval Aviation Service. He is a member of the American Legion and the Reserve Officers Association, the National Postmasters Association, the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce, the Red Cross, and the Salvation Army. tion. A Mason, he belongs to Lincoln Lodge Number 54, Lincoln Consistory and Sesostris Temple of the Shrine. He is a member of the Shrine Country Club at Lincoln, and is affiliated with St. Paul's Methodist Church of Lincoln. Residence: Lincoln.
William Marshall Giller
William Marshall Giller, lawyer, was born at Whitehall, Illinois, January 11, 1860, the son of Edward Alfred Giller who was born in Manchester, England, in 1821, and who came to America at the age of 18, settling in Illinois. He became a successful farmer, and was master of the Illinois State Grange for several years. He married Augusta Ladd, who was born at Windsor, Vermont, in 1830. They had eleven children, six of whom are living. Edward A. Giller died at Whitehall in March, 1907, and Augusta Ladd Giller died there in September, 1919.
William M. Giller received his early education in country schools. He attended high school at Ann Arbor, Michigan, being graduated in 1882, and received his A. B. from the University of Michigan, and his LL. B. from the University of Chicago.
Admitted to the bar in 1888, for the past forty years he has been a member of the law firm of Weaver and Giller, and has been engaged in active practice during all that time.
He was married to Elsie Conant, at Omaha, on December 25, 1907. Mrs. Giller was born at Cherokee, Iowa, December 13, 1873, and has one son Richard Conant Giller, aged 31, by a former marriage They have one daughter, Maxine, born July 1, 1910, who married Pierce Peters of Glenwood, Minnesota.
During the World War he was a four minute speaker and otherwise active. He is a member of the American, Nebraska State and Omaha-Douglas County Bar Associations. He attends the First Central Congregational Church. His fraternal organizations are the Elks, Masons, Woodmen of the World, Modern Woodmen of America and the Royal Arcanum. He is a member of the Happy Hollow Country Club, and enjoys hiking. Residence: Omaha.
John Valentine Gillespie
John V. Gillespie, jeweler at Randolph, has lived in Nebraska all his life. He was born at Gretna, the son of Michael Joseph and Elizabeth (Conner) Gillespie, December 27, 1881. His father, a farmer and insurance agent, was born at Joliet, Illinois, January 19, 1851, and died at Randolph, Nebraska, May 18, 1930; his ancestry was Irish. His mother was born at Gretna, April 17, 1858; her parents were pioneers of Sarpy County, coming to Nebraska when the territory was inhabited by Indians.
Mr. Gillespie attended rural school and in 1900 was a student at the Omaha Commercial College. He was a farmer until the age of 21, was clerk in the Union Pacific headquarters for two years, was employed in the Armour Packing Company office for one year, served as clerk for the Woodmen of the World Insurance Company for three years, and since then has been partner in a jewelry firm at Randolph with his brother, Francis W. Gillespie.
During the World War he served as chairman of the welfare work in Cedar County, was a member of the council of defense, and took part in loan drives. He is a member of the Red Cross, and was chairman of the committee that managed the $16,000 campaign during the war. He acted as chairman of the Commercial Club, 1918-19-20, is a member of the Woodmen of the World, and holds membership in the Nebraskana Society. He is a with Woodmen and a Democrat. He is affiliated with St. Francis de Chantal Catholic Church and is a member of the Knights of Columbus. His sport is golf, and his main interest in life is advising and aiding young men and women. Residence: Randolph.
Mabel Gillespie
Mabel Gillespie, newspaper woman and congresswoman, is a native of Ord, Nebraska, daughter of Hjalmar and Catheryn (Jensen) Gudmundsen. Her father, who died at Ord, July 6, 1930, was born at Nysted, Denmark. He had served as a county official in Valley County for more than 30 years, and was county judge for 21 years. His ancestors came from Iceland to Denmark; both his grandfathers were orators and statesmen. Hjalmar Gudmundsen was captain of Company I, Nebraska Volunteer Cavalry in the Spanish-American War, and had along and honorable military career. When he first came to America he joined the army and saw service on the Mexican Border and elsewhere. Catheryn Gudmundsen, his wife, was a native of Denmark. She died at Ord, Nebraska, when Mrs. Gillespie was a child.
Mrs. Gillespie attended school at Ord and Superior, graduating from high school at Superior. She graduated also from the Kearney State Teachers' College in 1915. She was married to William C. Gillespie at Omaha, in 1919.
From 1917-19, she was a member of the reportorial staff of the Omaha Bee and was the first woman to do straight news assignments on a metropolitan newspaper. A Democrat, she was the first woman to take the oath of office as state representative in January, 1925. She served during the terms 1925-27-29, special session 1930, was was re-elected in 1931. Her hobbies are reading and writing. Residence: Gretna.
Peter Leo Gillespie
Peter Leo Gillespie was born in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, September 2, 1875, the son of Hugh Francis Gillespie. Hugh Francis Gillespie was born in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, January 2, 1846, while Ellen Cecilia Salmon, his wife was born in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, June 12, 1847.
His father was a locomotive engineer for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad Company; he was of Scotch-Irish ancestry and his father served in the Mexican War and in the Civil War. Ellen Salmon Gillespie was also of Scotch-Irish parentage. Mr. Gillespie died January 10, 1915, and his wife died June 16, 1929. Their home was in Omaha, Nebraska.
Peter L. Gillespie received his education in the Wymore, Nebraska, elementary school, Wymore High School and then attended the Creighton, Nebraska, Academy in 1895. He received a degree of Bachelor of Arts at Creighton in 1897, Master of Arts in 1899 and Doctor of Medicine in 1901. He continued his education in New York City where he took a post graduate course in the School of Medicine, 1914-16. Mr. Gillespie received scholastic honors in medicine and was class valedictorian.
He married Stella Rosalie Mercer, November 4, 1903, at Omaha, Nebraska. They have two children: Howard, born January 13, 1911, and Eleanor, born July 22, 1912. Howard is a student of the University of Nebraska and is a sports writer for the Nebraska State Journal. Eleanor is a student at Creighton College in Omaha, Nebraska.
Mrs. Gillespie was born in Salem, Illinois, June 15, 1882. She is of Scotch-Irish Revolutionary ancestry. She is a club woman and the state officer in the Children of the American Revolution.
Peter L. Gillespie came to Nebraska, in October of 1888, and has been in the general practice of medicine since 1902 at which time he had completed a year's service as interne at the St. Joseph's Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska.
During the war he was in charge of the local enlistment company. He belongs to Daughters of the American Revolution by proxy and to the St. Mary's Church at Wymore, Nebraska, the Red Cross, the Knights

From 1905 to 1931 Mr. Gillespie was the medical examiner of the Knights of Columbus. He holds membership in the Gage County Medical Society and is a member of the Beatrice and Wymore, Nebraska, Country Clubs. He is an Elk, and is particularly fond of golfing, reading and gardening. James Willis Gillette
One of the leading business men of Norfolk, Nebraska, James Willis Gillette has lived in the state all of his adult life. He was born at Newman Grove, Nebraska, March 8, 1887, the son of W. Stephen and Blanche (Hoffman) Gillette. His father, a physician and a member of the Grand Army of the Republic, was born at Fairfax, Vermont, July 28, 1844, and died at Worcester, Vermont, May 21, 1902.
His grandfather, C. Willis Gillette, a marble carver, lived in Stowe, Vermont, where he died in 1896. The first American ancestor of the Gillette family was Jonathan, a French Hugenot, who escaped from France to England with William the Conqueror, and came to America about ten years after the Mayflower, settling in Massachusetts.
Mr. Gillette's mother, whose ancestry was German, was born in New York, and died at Newman Grove, June, 1901. She was for years one of Newman Grove's most prominent and beloved residents, and in the early days served as postmistress there.
Mr. Gillette attended Goddard Seminary at Barre, Vermont. For a number of years has been the owner and manager of the Gillette Creamery Company at Norfolk, Nebraska, which he founded January 1, 1917. He holds membership in the Chamber of Commerce, is a Mason, (Scottish Rite and York Rite), and during 1929 and 1930 was treasurer of the Young Men's Christian Association. He is very active in Boy Scout work.
His marriage to Birdie C. Kuhl occurred at Norfolk, September 15, 1915. Mrs. Gillette, whose ancestry is German, was born at Norfolk, October 15, 1891. She is the daughter of Gus and Emma (Kluckhohn) Kuhi. They have three children: Richard Willis, born January 9, 1918; Mary L., born October 11, 1919; and J. Stephen, born August 2, 1927. Edward Encil Gilmore
For 57 years Edward Encil Gilmore has lived in Nebraska where he has been a farmer for many years. He was born in LaSalle County, Illinois, May 25, 1869, the son of Jonas and Jane (Stanford) Gilmore. His father, a farmer, was born in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, April 5, 1842, and died at Blue Vale, York County, Nebraska, August 26, 1910; his ancestry was Dutch. Jane (Standford) Gilmore was born at Wheeling, Marshall County, West Virginia, June 1, 1844, and died at McCool Junction, York County, Nebraska, March 9, 1930.
Mr. Gilmore owns and operates a farm near McCool Junction. He is a Democrat. His marriage to Sarah Catherine Eastman was solemnized at Seward, Seward County, Nebraska, March 15, 1889. Mrs. Gilmore, whose ancestry was Dutch, was born at Forest City, Holt County, Missouri, November 12 1869. Mrs. Gilmore is president of the McCool Women's Christian Temperance Union.
They have two children: Richard, born January 17, 1892, who married Margaret May Donovan; and Alberta, born November 22, 1893, who married Frank Klone. Richard is a veterinarian, and Alberta is a beauty operator.

Raymond McCreary Gilmore
Raymond McCreary Gilmore, dentist, was born at Auburn, Nebraska, January 5, 1896, son of Albert David and Elizabeth Culbertson (Curtis) Gilmore.
His father was born in Greencastle, Indiana, and died at Auburn, November 24, 1918. He was a merchant, whose Scotch-Irish ancestors came to Virginia about 1650. His wife, Elizabeth Culbertson, was born in Troy, Ohio, and is a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution through the Culbertson line.
In 1909 Dr. Gilmore was graduated from the public schools at Lincoln, Nebraska, and in 1913 from high school at Mondamin, Iowa. He attended Bellevue College, the University of Chicago, and Creighton University of Omaha, and was admitted to practice in June, 1923. He was a member of Alpha Sigma Tau at Creighton, Delta Sigma Delta at Creighton, and was president of the local chapter in 1923. While at Bellevue College he was a member of the football team in 1914 and 1915.
His marriage to Emma Jane Ward was solemnized at Rushville, Nebraska, December 28, 1922. Mrs. Gilmore was born at Albany, Nebraska, September 1, 1896. They have three children, Helen, born May 6, 1925; Pauline, born August 16, 1926; and Barbara Jane, born August 18, 1930.
Dr. Gilmore is a Republican. He was ordnance sergeant in the United States Army during the World War, participated in the Toul defensive sector, the St. Mihiel, Meuse Argonne, and served in the army of occupation. He is a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
His professional organizations include, the American Dental Society, the Nebraska State Dental Society, and the Northwestern District Dental Society, He is affiliated with the Kearney Presbyterian Church, is a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Kiwanis Club, the Masons, the State Historical Society, and the Kearney School Board. He is fond of golf and fishing, and is a member of the Kearney Country Club. Residence: Kearney.
Robert Gilmore
Robert Gilmore, prominent physician and surgeon, was born in Belfast, Ireland, June 4, 1856, son of James and Jean (McRoberts) Gilmore.
Dr. Gilmore received his education in public schools, and from Queen's University at Belfast. He was graduated from the Royal College of Physicians and surgeons at Edinburgh, Scotland, and in 1880 was given his medical degree by the Queen's University of Ireland, at Dublin.
In 1880 Dr. Gilmore came to Nebraska where he has carried on a general practice. He has served as president of the Central States Investment Company and the Central States Land Company, and as vice president of the Skinner Manufacturing Company of Omaha.
He is a Royal Arch Mason, an Elk, and a member of the Omaha and the Country Club. He is a Democrat, and is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church.
On October 21, 1884, he was married to Gretta Campbell Burrows at North Lodge, Ireland. They have one daughter, Amy Kathleen, who is married to R. M. Switzler. (Sec Who's Who in Omaha). Residence: Omaha.
James Gilmour
James Gilmour, was born in Rock Bluffs, Nebraska, May 24, 1869, the son of William and Lucy Ellen (Towner) Gilmour. William Giimour was born in Orchard Lake, Michigan, September 20, 1838, and came to Nebraska in 1853. He fought in the Civil War, freighted across

the plains and knew Peter A. Sarpy and Logan Fontanelle at Bellview, Nebraska, as friends. His father was a native of Scotland and his mother was a direct descendant of General Braddock, who was the first governor of Massachusetts.
James Gilmour's mother was born in Bates County, Missouri, January 4, 1848, the daughter of Reverend A. Towner, pioneer and Methodist minister of Scotch descent. Her mother was. Hester Vought, of Pennsylvania Dutch parentage. William Gilmour died in Plattsmouth, Nebraska, January 28, 1928, and his wife in Sioux City, Iowa, December 11, 1924.
Mr. Gilmour married Louella Jane Snyder, May 30, 1694, at Plattsmouth. Her ancestors were from Virginia. She was born in Plattsmouth, on April 19, 1872, and taught school before her marriage. They have no children.
During the World War Mr. Gilmour was a member of the Home Guards and he is a member of the Reel Cross. He is affiliated with the Christian Church of Ulysses, Nebraska, and the Odd Fellows Lodge. He is independent in politics, has resided in Nebraska sixty-two years, and is a member of the Nebraskana Society. Residence: Ulysses.
Herbert Dewey Gish
Herbert D. Gish, director of athletics at the University of Nebraska, was born at Abilene, Kansas, June 2, 1898. His father, Nathan Engle Gish, who was born at Maytown, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, August 14, 1874, was a business man and traveling salesman. He died at Lincoln, February 18, 1925. Mary Josephine (Gibson) Gish, his wife, was born at Abilene, October 3, 1873. She is of English descent.
Mr. Gish received his education in the public schools of Kansas and Nebraska, and in 1918 was graduated from the Lincoln High School. He was awarded his B. S. degree in business administration at the University of Nebraska in 1922, and was a student at the University of Michigan, during the summer of 1926. A member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, he was also active in track for three years at the University of Nebraska.
General assistant in the athletic department of the University of Nebraska from 1922 to 1925; he was acting director of athletics from March, 1925, to May, 1927; and since 1927 he has been director of intercollegiate and intramural athletics at that institution. He has lived in Nebraska for 12 years.
He was united in marriage with Irene Florence Graham at Manhattan, Riley County, Kansas, June 7, 1923. Mrs. Gish was born at White City, Kansas, March 4, 1898. There are two children: Mary Jo, born October 6, 1924; and Herbert G., born December 20, 1928.
Mr. Gish served as a private in the Student Army Training Corp in 1918, and is a member of the American Legion. A member of the board of directors of the Rotary club, 1930-31, he is a member of the Chamber of Commerce, and is a member of the Nebraskana Society. He is a Scottish Rite Mason and Shriner, and his social clubs are the University Club and Shrine Country Club. He affiliated with Westminster Presbyterian Church of Lincoln, and is fond of golfing, hunting, and fishing. Residence: Lincoln.
Annie Reavis Gist
Annie Reavis Gist, clubwoman, was born at Falls City, April 7, 1865, the daughter of Isham and Annie Dorrington Reavis. Her father, who was born at Chandersville, Illinois, January 28, 1836, and died in Falls City, 1865, Was a distinguished lawyer and judge of the United States Court of the Arizona territory. His ancestors came to North Carolina, in 1620; his great great grandfather, the first Isham Reavis, served in the battle of King's Mountain. His father settled in Illinois in its early days. Her mother, who was born at Whitestown, Oneida County, New York, October 24, 1845, was a teacher and church worker.
Mrs. Gist attended the Falls City High School, and she was graduated from the Jacksonville Woman's College in 1884, where she was valedictorian of her class and was awarded the degrees A. B., M. A., and B. F. A. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi.
At Falls City, she was married to Thomas Jefferson Gist on September 5, 1888. Mr. Gist, who was born at Tipton, Missouri, May 2, 1863, is a banker, and traces his ancestry from Revolutionary times. Four children were born to this union: Isham Reavis, born July 22, 1890, died at Fort Riley, Kansas, in the service of his country, October 21, 1918; Silas Frank, born October 29, 1893; Anna Margaret, born May 3, 1897, who married Edwin Morehead; and Elizabeth Webster, born August 9, 1899, who married Dr. Millard U. Burton.
Mrs. Gist was in charge of seven counties in liberty loan drives during the World War, and helped raise funds for building hostess houses. For 12 years she has been a member of the Red Cross, of which she has been president of the county chapter for the last five years. She is a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the auxiliary of the Disabled Veterans of America, the auxiliary of the American Legion, the State Historical Society and the Nebraskana Society. For twenty-five years she has been on the library board of Falls City. She is a member of the Eastern Star and the Methodist Episcopal Church, where she has played the pipe organ for over twenty years. Her hobbies are reading and music. Residence: Falls City.
Claus Wilhelm Glandt
Claus Wilhelm Glandt, building contractor, real estate and insurance man, was born at Deichhausen, Ditmarschen, Holstein, Germany on April 8, 1871. His father, Peter Glandt, born in Holland, in 1820, was a miller, whose death occurred at Deichhausen on July 4, 1885. Peter Glandt married Katharine Thode, a native of Busum, born in 1838, and whose death occurred at Deichhauseo in 1877.
Educated in grade school at Deichhausen, Claus Wilhelm Glandt came to America as a youth, and about thirty-five years ago entered the building contracting business, and later took up insurance and real estate work. He started his business at Elkhorn, a few years later removing to Bennington where he is senior member of the firm of C. W. Glandt and Sons.
Of his marriage to Kathrine Alvina Stoltenberg three children are living and three are deceased. Carl, born October 12, 1876, died in 1903, as did Wilhelm, born September 24, 1898. Rudolph P., born April 1, 1901, married Helen Margaret Roe; Arthur R., born August 13, 1903, married Maude Vaughn; Otto W., born November 1, 1906 is unmarried, and Emma K., born March 20, 1910, died December 20, 1910.
Rudolph, Arthur and Otto are associated with their father in business. Mrs. Glandt was born at Barsbeck, Propsti, Holstein, Germany on June 30, 1873.
Mr. Glandt is a Republican. He is a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Bennington Plattdutcher Verein, the Commercial Club and the Nebraskana Society. His hobby is mechanics. Residence: Bennington.
Lee A. Glassburn
Lee A. Glassburn, publisher of the Fillmore County News, was born in Miami County, Indiana, February 1, 1869, son of Andrew and Mary Frances (Willie) Glassburn. The father was born in Johnson County, Indiana, October 26, 1837, and died at Glenwood, Iowa, September 17, 1927. The mother was born in Kentucky, August 8, 1842, and died at Glenwood, August 5, 1899.
