William Larkin Goodell

Born at Sacramento, California, September 19, 1897, William Larkin Goodell is the son of William Yates and Nora May (Flint) Goodell. At the age of 4 years he left California with his parents locating on a farm near Wahoo, Nebraska. They remained here two years and later moved to a farm six miles northeast of Norfolk, Nebraska.

He received his elementary training in a rural school two miles from his home, and remained on the farm until entering the academy at Cotner College. His father, a farmer, was born at Syracuse, New York, April 11, 1867. His mother was born at Gallatin, Missouri, July 19, 1870.

Mr. Goodell was graduated from Cotner College Academy in 1922, was a student at Cotner College for three years, where he was active in debating and music. While there he worked at various occupations to pay for his schooling, including the business management of the college paper during the school years, 1921-22. He was a member of the championship debating team in 1924, and held membership in Phi Kappa Delta. He served as student pastor at Waco, Salem, and Murray, Nebraska, 1921-22, held a pastorate at Valparaiso, Nebraska, 1922-25, was resident pastor at David City, Nebraska, 1926, and served at Indianola, Nebraska, 1927-29. He has been pastor of the First Church of Christ, of Minden, Nebraska, since 1930. He is president of the local ministerial association, and also president of the sixth district Churches of Christ in Nebraska.

Mr. Goodell is a member of the Nebraskana Society. He has been a resident of Nebraska for the past 30 years and for the past decade has devoted his entire time to religious activities in various communities. He is a Republican.

On July 14, 1920, he was married to Grace Crystal Will at Falls City, Nebraska. Mrs. Goodell, who was a stenographer and bookkeeper prior to her marriage, was born at Falls City, August 14, 1897. She attended Cotner Academy, and was the associate business manager of the Cotner Collegian during the school years of 1920-21. To this marriage were born the following children: Will Edward, Jane 15, 1921; Robert Yates, June 15, 1923; Dorothy Ellen, February 13, 1925; and Virginia May, March 31, 1927. Residence: Minden. William Ernest Goodhue

William Ernest Goodhue, lawyer, was born in Cheshire County, New Hampshire, February 18, 1860, and has been a resident of Nebraska since March 20, 1884. His father, Nathaniel Gage Goodhue, was born at Newport, Massachusetts, August 17, 1820, and died at Carleton, February 11, 1888. He was a minister of the Congregational Church, descended from William Goodhue who came from England 19 years after the Mayflower sailed.

Nathaniel Goodhue married Lucinda Almira Osborn. She was born at Attica, New York, June 30, 1829, and died at Carleton, February 2, 1888. She was a successful wife and mother, and under her training William E. Goodhue received part of his early education.

On October 11, 1911, he was united in marriage to Ada Jamison, at Lincoln. She was born at Mediapolis, Iowa, in 1860, and died at Mediapolis on June 22, 1926. Mr. Goodhue was married to Delila Colson, on August 15, 1928.

Active in the practice of law for many years, Judge Goodhue has always been active in Republican politics, and served two terms as county judge and one term as county attorney of Thayer County. He is a member of the Nebraska State Bar Association, the Red Cross, the Nebraskana Society, and for many years has been affiliated with the First Presbyterian Church of Hebron His hobby is reading. George Leonard Gordon

George Leonard Gordon, merchant, was born at Nashua, New Hampshire, December 6, 1878, son of Arthur C. and Susan C. (Kimball) Gordon. His ancestry is Scotch English on both sides, his family having come to America between 1760 and 1770.

Mr. Gordon attended the public and high schools at Nashua, and at the present time is the operator of the Gering Mercantile Company, He is a Republican, a Methodist and a Mason. His hobbies are golf, fishing and hunting.

On July 7, 1908, he was married to Florence V. Woolfenden at Gering. Mrs. Gordon was born at Racine, Wisconsin, July 3, 1886, and died at Omaha, October 13, 1928. Residence: Gering.


George Edwin Gorton

George Edwin Gorton, pharmacist, has lived in Dawes County, Nebraska, since 1889. He was born at Ypsilanti, Michigan, March 3, 1864, the son of Edwin Delos and Janes Elizabeth (Kriseley) Gorton. His father, a harness maker and a non-commissioned officer in the Civil War, was born at Ypsilanti, November 3, 1833, and died at Crawford, Nebraska, October 8, 1891; he served as postmaster under President Cleveland's administration. His mother, who devoted time and energy to all community affairs, was born at Seneca Falls, New York, March 21, 1838, and died at Crawford, October 6, 1925.

Mr. Gorton received most of his education in study at home and studied pharmacy at the University of Illinois where he received the Ph. G. degree. He has engaged in business at Crawford for the past 40 years and has been one of the builders of his state and community. Mr. Gorton holds membership in the Red Cross and the Nebraskana Society. During the World War he served as chairman of the Four Minute Men and was active in loan drives. He was one of the organizers of the Sons of Veterans at Crawford. He is a member of the Lincoln Farm Association, and is president of the City Taxpayers League. He is past secretary of the Crawford Chamber of Commerce, past chairman of the Republican county committee and past delegate to the Republican state convention.

His marriage to Ora Pearle Cowlick occurred at Cheyenne, Wyoming, July 15, 1899. Mrs. Gorton, who was a teacher before her marriage, was born at Bryan, Ohio, July 16, 1874. They have four children, Alice, born November 8, 1902, who married Carl W. Peters; Edwin, born May 10, 1911; Frances Jane, born July 17, 1915; and Mildred Louise, born November 24, 1918. Alice graduated from the Crawford High School and attended the University at Lincoln two years and graduated from the Emerson College of Oratory at Boston, Massachusetts. Prior to her marriage she was engaged in dramatic work. Edwin is a student at the University of Nebraska. Residence: Crawford. (Photograph on Page 471).


Charles Albert Goss

Chief Justice Charles A. Goss, of the Supreme Court of the State of Nebraska, has made his residence in Omaha since April 14, 1886. He was born in Edinburg, Portage County, Ohio, December 10, 1863. His father, Alfred Ruggles Goss was born in Fall River, Massachussets, August 30, 1834, and died at Omaha, July 25, 1898. He was a country merchant whose father was born in Massachusetts, while his mother came to this country from Scotland in early girlhood.
