Riley Clement Harriss
Riley Clement Harriss is a native of Arthur, Illinois, born December 28, 1881. He is the son of Sion and Mary Frances (Richards) Harriss, the former a native of Wayne County, Illinois. Sion Harriss was born January 5, 1847, and has been a farmer all his life. His wife, Mary Frances Richards was born in Moultry County, Illinois, December 2, 1860. She was formerly a teacher, and is of English descent.
Riley C. Harriss was educated in the elementary schools of Jefferson County, Nebraska, and was graduated from Fairbury High School in 1905. He served as county superintendent of Jefferson County schools from 1908 to 1915. He was elected on the Republican ticket to the Nebraska state senate and served four years, the 1919 and 1921 sessions. During the 1919 session Mr. Harriss took an active part as a member of the state senate in the passage of the bill which carried an appropriation of five million dollars for the erection of Nebraska's new capitol building.
In 1912 he began writing insurance for the Bankers Life Insurance Company of Nebraska. In 1922 he was promoted to the Omaha branch as general agent. He is a member of the National Underwriters Association, the Nebraska Life Underwriters Managers Club, and is a charter member of the Fairbury Kiwanis Club. He is a member of the Omaha Chamber of Commerce, the Omaha Parent Teachers Association, the Y. M. C. A., The Nebransakana (sic) Society and the Red Cross. He is a 32nd degree Mason. His hobby is golf.
He was married to Alice Mary Hunt at Fairbury, Nebraska, June 15, 1911. Mrs. Harriss was born at Belvidere, Nebraska, October 14, 1887. The genealogy of her family reveals that she is a direct descendant of William the Conqueror. There are three children living and one dead: Clement Lowell, born August 2, 1912, who attends Harvard University; Donald Hunt, born September 24, 1915; Marion Elizabeth, born December 25, 1917, and Robert Mendell, born November 22, 1922, who died November 30, 1928. Howard LeRoy Harse
For nearly 20 years Howard LeRoy Harse has been one of the owners and manager of the Queen City Laundry at Hastings, Nebraska. He was born at Miller, Buffalo County, Nebraska, October 20, 1886, the son of John and Abbie Jane (Cassel) Harse. His father, who was a ranchman and livestock dealer, was born at Christchurch, England, October 17, 1850, and died there October 4, 1924; he came to America in 1864. His mother was born in Iowa, May, 1862, and died at Omaha, Nebraska, March 5, 1911; her father was of Pennsylvania Dutch descent, while her mother's parents were English.
Mr. Harse attended the Hastings High School where he was awarded a letter for activities in football events. He was employed by a railway company at Omaha for two years and at Alamosa and Gunnison, Colorado, for four years. From 1913 to 1916 he operated his father's stock ranch, and since 1916 has been in his own business at Hastings. He is a director in the Great Plains Aircraft Company.
He is a member of the Chamber of Commerce and the Hastings Country Club, and from 1923 to 1929 was a member of the Hastings Kiwanis Club, acting as president of the latter organization in 1926. During the World War he served in the United States Army, stationed at Camp Grant, Rockford, Illinois. He is now a member of the American Legion and is affiliated with St Marks Episcopal Church at Hastings. Mr. Harse is interested in hunting and fishing and likes the out of doors.
He was married at Hastings, March 23, 1918, to Gertrude Adelade Benedict, who was born at Hastings, August 4, 1892. Her ancestry is English. Their three children are: Janet, born March 5, 1921; William, born March 3, 1923; and Robert, born April 2, 1926. Residence: Hastings.
John. A. Harshfield
John A. Harshfield, rancher and breeder of Hereford beef cattle, was born at Osage Mission, Kansas, (now St. Paul), May 4, 1875, son of John Thomas and Caroline (Shoptaugh) Harshfield.
John Thomas Harshfield was born in Green County, Indiana, February 11, 1843, and died at Sutherland, October 18, 1906. He was a farmer and later a merchant, and still later a stockfarmer. In his last years he became a hotel manager. He was descended from early German, English and Irish settlers in the United States. His wife, Caroline, died at St. Paul, Kansas, in 1881. She was of pre-Revolutionary ancestry.
Mr. Harshfield attended public school, and for many years has been engaged in ranching. He has written a series of articles on economics and stories of the old west, and is one of the few old-timers in Lincoln County.
On April 11, 1898, he was married to Etta Carrico at North Platte. Mrs. Harshfield was born at Parsons, Kansas, March 29, 1879. She is descended from settlers in America who came with Lord Baltimore. There are five children: Olive, born May 13, 1900; Walter, born July 2, 1902; Alva, born July 18, 1905; Wilbert, born January 24, 1908; and Gladys, born June 9, 1912.
During the World War Mr. Harshfield was active in almost every drive. He is a member of the Odd Fellows. the Nebraskana Society, the Old Settlers Club of Lincoln County, and for 25 years has been director of school districts number 103 and 104. He was the organizer, and is still a. member of the Antelopes. His hobby is reading. Residence: Sutherland.
Earl F. Hart
Earl F. Hart was born at Edgar, Nebraska, November 23, 1888. His father, William Alonzo Hart, who is a retired farmer, was born at Waverly, Illinois, January 30, 1859. His mother, Eliza Ella (Nall) Hart, was born at Franklin, Illinois, April 1, 1864.
Mr. Hart attended rural school district number 77 and was graduated from the Edgar High School in 1906. Later he was a student at Nebraska Wesleyan University. He was, a farmer for several years, and at this time operates a grain and coal business at Edgar; he is also the manager and owner of grain elevators at Alexandria and Glenvil, Nebraska, and is secretary-treasurer of the Hart-Bohling Grain Company.
He holds membership in the Lions Club, is affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church at Edgar, and is a member of the Nebraskana Society. His sports are hunting and fishing. He is a member of the Masonic Lodge Number 167 at Edgar, Chapter Number 22, Royal Arch, Tehama Temple at Hastings. He is a Democrat.
On October 26, 1910, he was married at Edgar to Inez Elizabeth Ferree. Mrs. Hart was born at Edgar, November 29, 1888. Three children were born to this marriage: Robert, born May 1, 1912, who is operating a grain elevator at Alexandria for the Hart-Bohling Grain Company; an infant son born March 9, 1916; and Gordon, born February 24, 1925, who died June 1, 1930. Mrs. Hart is a member and recording secretary of the P. E. O. Residence: Edgar.
Harry Hills Hart
Harry Hills Hart, son of Samuel Ira and Jane (Mills) Hart, was born at Richland, Iowa, April 18, 1867. Samuel Ira Hart was born in Ohio, in 1824, and farmed in Iowa

and Nebraska until his death at Allen, Nebraska, in June, 1900. Jane Mills Hart was born in Indiana, in 1834, and died at Moscow, Colorado, in March, 1928.
Upon the completion of his elementary education, Mr. Hart farmed for some time, and later engaged in the automobile business. At the present time he is dealer for Ford cars at Ponca. A Republican he has served as sheriff and county judge during his sixty-four years of residence.
He was married to Nellie R. Isom, at Allen, Nebraska, November 24, 1888. Mrs. Hart was born in Janesville, Wisconsin, December 18. 1867, and is active in her husband's business. There were three children born to this marriage: Alta, born in 1890, died in 1895; Zeta, born in 1897, married George Carter, and died in March, 1931; Lamont, born January 12, 1904, married Esther Wendte.
Mr. Hart is a member of Salem Lutheran Church, the Red Cross, Lions Club and the Nebraskana Society. He is an Odd Fellow, a Mason, and a member of the Shrine. His favorite sport is golf. Residence: Ponca.
John Crandall Hartigan
A leading professional man in Fairbury, Nebraska, John Crandall Hartigan, born May 20, 1870, at Kansas City, Missouri, is the son of Michel Angelo Hartigan and Martha (Crandall) Hartigan. His father was born at Carbondale, Pennsylvania, and died at Fort Dodge, Iowa, March 19, 1920. He was of Irish parentage and was a lawyer. His mother was born at Oswego, New York, of English and Dutch parentage, and died at Fort Dodge, September 10, 1921.
John Hartigan was graduated from the Plattsmouth High School in 1887 and then attended Hastings College. He was admitted to the bar at Hastings, Nebraska, in May 1889. From 1890-91 he was mayor of Fairbury and has been city attorney of Fairbury. He was Adjutant General of Nebraska from 1909-1911.
On January 5, 1895, he was married to Nelle Gertrude Brown at Hastings, Nebraska. Mrs. Hartigan, born at Sibley, Iowa, October 6, 1874, is of English parentage. To this union three children were born; John, Merrell, January 2, 1897; Kathleen, February 13, 1898; and Richard, January 7, 1907.
Mr. Hartigan is a Democrat and is a member of the State Bar Association. He was a second lieutenant in the Second United States Volunteers in the Spanish American War (serving as captain colonel, and brigadier general). He is a former member of the National Guard, was chairman of the Jefferson County Council of Defense, and is a United Spanish War veteran.
He holds membership in the Fairbury Commercial Club, the Rotary Club, the Elks, the Modern Woodmen of America, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, the Fairbury Country Club, and the Fairbury Park Board. Golf is his favorite recreation. Residence: Fairbury.
Gordon Adelbert Hartman
Gordon Adelbert Hartman, pharmacist and owner of a drug store at Gresham, Nebraska, has lived in this state for the past 30 years. He was born at Moulton, Iowa, June 19, 1891, the son of Morgan Eagle and Myrtle Elizabeth (Dodge) Hartman. His father, a farmer, was born of Pennsylvania Dutch ancestors, at Pottstown, Pennsylvania, October 4, 1857. His mother was born at Le Souer, Minnesota, March 31, 1867, the daughter of Liva Pixley and Elisha Ashcraft Dodge.
Mr. Hartman attended the public schools of Clarinda, Iowa; McCook, Nebraska; Falls City, Nebraska; Kansas City, Missouri; Eureka Springs, Arkansas; and Plattsmouth, Nebraska. In 1909 he was graduated from the McCook High School; he was employed by C. R. Woodworth, druggist, at McCook during his high school days and continued to work in the drug store there until 1913. He was employed by the Richardson Drug Company of Omaha during 1914 and at the same time studied pharmacy under a Creighton professor. For a time he worked for J. L. Brandeis & Sons, and from 1915 to 1921 was connected with the Jerome Drug Company of York, Nebraska. He now owns and manages his own drug store at Gresham.
He has been active in civic affairs at Gresham for several years, holding the following positions: chairman of the Red Cross, 1929-30; member of the local school board, two years; justice of the peace; and police judge. He is now a member of the York County Red Cross Committee, the Young Men's Christian Association, Nebraska Pharmaceutical Association, and the Nebraskana Society. He is affiliated with the Gresham Methodist Church and holds membership in the Masons and Odd Fellows Lodge. He is interested in football, while his hobby is reading.
His marriage to Tressa Trean Rector was solemnized at McCook, Nebraska, December 25, 1913. Mrs. Hartman was born at Miltonvale, Kansas, February 7, 1888, the daughter of Mary Humphrey Rector and Oscar Newton Rector. They have two children: M. Adelbert, born August 27, 1916; and Stanley R., born October 31, 1922. Residence: Gresham.
Charles Hartner
Since 1915 Charles Hartner has been prominent as a physician and surgeon at Madison, Nebraska. He was born at Leonardville, Kansas, June 21, 1889, son of Paul and Pauline Hartner. His father, who was a farmer, was born in Germany, October 23, 1863, and now resides at Clay Center, Kansas. His mother, Pauline Frederike (Brodt) Hartner, was born in Germany, December 18, 1868.
Dr. Hartner has six brothers and three sisters, Paul, of Riley, Kansas; Fred, of Clay Center, Kansas; Will, of Clay Center, Kansas; the Reverend Henry, who is pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church of Lincoln; Ernest and Herman of Clay Center; Minnie Hartner Kahre of Clay Center; Rose Hartner Tonn of Clay Center; and Pauline Louise, a teacher of music at Holywood California.
Dr. Hartner attended night school where he received the equivalent of a high school education, and was later graduated from the American School of Osteopathy with the degree of Doctor of Osteopathy. Receiving his degree in 1915, prior thereto and in 1911 Dr. Hartner entered York Business College where he attained further education and where he discovered his adaptability for penmanship. He is a member of the Sillonian Club.
During 1927, 1928, and 1929, Dr. Hartner was a member of the Trinity Lutheran School board at Madison and was chairman of Trinity Lutheran Church, 1929. He was its treasurer from 1924 until 1926 inclusive. He is a member of the Madison Community Club, the Lions Club, the Nebraskana Society, and the Red Cross. His professional organizations include the following: the American Osteopathic Association, the Nebraska Osteopathic Association, and the Northeast Nebraska Osteopathic Association. He is affiliated with the Trinity Lutheran Church at Madison, and is a member of the Madison Country Club.
He was married to Alma Dorothy Whemhoff at Clay Center, Kansas, April 22, 1915. Mrs. Hartner, whose parents were German, was born at Clay Center, Kansas, March 25, 1892. Their children are: Lawrence, born March 30, 1916; Helen, born June 10, 1917; and Gerald, an adopted child, born May 11, 1929. Lawrence and Helen are students in high school.
For a period of ten years Dr. Hartner has been secretary and treasurer for the local branch of the Aid Associations for Lutherans as well as their local medical examiner. Residence: Madison. (Photograph on Page 517).
