and academy, and later taught schools in New York and Missouri. For nearly 48 years he has lived in Nebraska where he has carried on varied business activities. Having learned three trades, that of carpented (sic) and joiner, millright, and making sash-doors and blinds, he practiced his trades for some time and then became a clerk in stores in New York, and later in Missouri. In Sabetha, Kansas, he owned his first interest in a store, and in Falls City, Nebraska, he was owner and manager of two general merchandise stores and one ready-to-wear establishment. For twenty-five years he was employed by Charles Wolff & Company, owner of the Palace Silk Mills of Allentown, Pennsylvania, covering a district of fourteen states west of the Mississippi River. Mr. Jenne is now retired, and for the last twelve years has traveled for pleasure, and has visited every state in the union except Maine. A Democrat, he was chairman of the Democratic central committee of Richardson County for five years, and served two terms as supervisor of Richardson County.
His marriage to Florence Murch was solemnized at Clintonville, Essex County, New York, October 12, 1873. Mrs. Jenne, who was born at Lower Jay, May 10, 1852, and died at Falls City, December 24, 1928, was the daughter of English parents, Horace and Safronia Murch. Three children were born to this union, two of whom are living. Harry M., who was born August 25, 1876, and who married Mary Slocum, was a shoe dealer in Falls City for 12 years, and is now the owner of a 2,000 acre ranch in southern Kansas. William Nye was born April 3, 1881, and died September 2, 1905. Ralph H., born July 23, 1883, married Amy Bauer and owns a lady's ready to wear store in Falls City; he is a Democrat.
Mr. Jenne was active during the World War in various drives, acting as chairman of nearly all the liberty loan drives in his county. For six years he was chairman of the Red Cross, and is now vice-president and publicity chairman of this organization. He is a member of the Knights of Honor, the American Order of United Workmen, the Modern Woodmen of America, Eagles, the Royal Highlanders; he is a member of Elks, and Knights of Pythias, being past president of the state organization of Elks of the State of Nebraska. In 1881 he was united with the Congregation Church at Sabetha, Kansas. His favorite sport is golf; he is a member of the Elks Golf Club. Residence: Falls City.
Anna Vivian Jennings
Born at Van Meter, Iowa, January. 30, 1874, Anna Vivian Jennings is the daughter of William Henry and Ruth Ann (Clayton) Jennings. Her father was born in Guernsey County, Ohio, February 14, 1845, and died at Lincoln, Nebraska, December 30, 1930. He was a prominent banker at Davenport, Thayer County, Nebraska, for more than 40 years, and was organizer of the Jennings State Bank now one of the outstanding banks of that country. He was a member of the Nebraska Senate in 1903 and 1905, and was president of the Senate in 1905. He was of English descent, and was a veteran of the Civil War. Her mother, who was a teacher before her marriage, was born at Salem, Indiana, January 7, 1847, and died at Davenport, Nebraska, September 22, 1912; her ancestry was German.
Miss Jennings was graduated from the high school, the first graduating class, at Davenport, Nebraska, attended York College, Peru Normal, and received the B. L. S. degree at the University of Illinois Library School in 1903. She taught in the rural schools of Davenport from 1893 to 1894, was a grammar grade teacher at Davenport from 1894 to 1897, and 1899-1900, and was assistant librarian of the Normal School at Peru, 1903-05. She organized the library of the State Teachers College of Kearney, Nebraska, in 1905, when the school was founded and has been head librarian since that time.
Miss Jennings is a life member of the American Association and has been chairman of the teachers college section at three national conferences. She is a member of the Nebraska Library Association and was president in 1910. She holds a membership in the National Educational Association, the Nebraska State Teachers Association, the American Association of University Women, and the Foreign Policy Association. She is state chairman of the international relations committee of the Business and Professional Women's Club for 1931, is a life member of the Kearney Women's Club, also a charter member of Chapter A. S. of the P. E. O., of which she was president in 1909. She is affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church of Kearney, and is a member of the Young Women's Christian Association, and a life member of the Nebraskana Society.
Anna Vivian Jennings has traveled extensively in the United States, spent the summer of 1910 in Europe, and made a world tour during 1926-27. Her political preference is the Republican party. Residence: Kearney.
Glenn Edwards Jennings
Glenn E. Jennings has lived in Nebraska for over 40 years and since 1903 has been an active business man at Omaha. He was born at Waukon, Allamakee County, Iowa, May 16, 1884, the son of John James and Jessie Benton (Edwards) Jennings. His father, who is a hardware merchant and banker, was born at Waukon, August 13, 1862, of English descent. His mother was born at Lansing, Iowa, July 20, 1862. Her ancestors were Welsh.
Mr. Jennings was graduated from high school at Gothenburg, Nebraska, 1901, and was a student at the University of Nebraska in 1902 and 1903. Since 1903 he has been associated with the Wright & Wilhelmy Company at Omaha, serving as salesman, 1906-15; vice president, 1918; vice president and secretary, 1926; and since 1929 president and treasurer. He is also a director in the United States National Bank at Omaha.
He married Meta Catharine Schomerus at Johnson, Nemaha County, Nebraska, December 22, 1908. Mrs. Jennings, whose ancestry is German, was born on a farm in Otoe County, Nebraska, May 27, 1885.
During the World War Mr. Jennings was active in all loan drives and Red Cross affairs. He is a director in each of the following organizations: Omaha Chamber of Commerce, National Hardware Jobbers Association, Young Men's Christian Association, and the Omaha Rotary Club of which he is also vice president. He is a member of all York and Scottish Rite bodies of the Masons; and the Shrine. He holds membership in the Omaha Athletic Club, the Happy Hollow Country Club, and is a member of First Methodist Episcopal Church of Omaha. He is a Republican. His favorite sports are golfing and fishing. Residence: Omaha.
John James Jennings
Born at Waukon, Iowa, August 13, 1862, John James Jennings has been a resident of Gothenburg, Nebraska, since 1890 and during that time has been successfully engaged in the hardware business. John Jennings, his father, who was a blacksmith, was born at Milton, New Jersey, September 12, 1811, and died at Armour, South Dakota, May 15, 1892. Sarah (Haines) Jennings, his mother, whose ancestry was English, was born at Peeksville, New York, September 16, 1821, and died at Greely, Iowa, January 2, 1913.
Mr. Jennings attended the grade school at Waukon. He has been in the firm of Jennings & Spaulding since his arrival in Nebraska 41 years ago, and is one of the oldest business men in Gothenburg. He is a director in the First State Bank of Gothenburg.
He holds membership in the Nebraska Retail Hardware Association of which he was president for a year, the Chamber of Commerce of which he was also president for a time, and the Kiwanis Club, acting as president of the latter organization at this time. Mr. Jen-

nings was secretary of the local school board, is affiliated with the First Methodist Church, and holds membership in the Gothenburg Country Club. He is a member of the Odd Fellows and the following Masonic bodies: Blue Lodge, Chapter, Knight Templar, Scottish Rite, and Shrine. He likes to hunt and golf.
On May 16, 1883, he married Jessie Benton Edwards at Lansing, Iowa. Mrs. Jennings, who is a photograph retoucher, was born at Lansing, July 20, 1862, of Welsh and English descent. To this marriage four children were born: Glenn, May 16, 1884, who married Meta Schumaries; Clarence, April 3, 1886, who married Luberta Davies; Celia, January 2, 1889, who married Harry A. Lainson; and Caddy, March 11, 1891, who married Roger Williams. Glenn is president of the Wright & Wilhelmy Hardware Company of Omaha. Clarence has been connected with the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company of Omaha for 18 years. Residence: Gothenburg.
Anthony Louis Jensen
Anthony Louis Jensen, merchant and farmer, was born at Dell Rapids, South Dakota, April 27, 1889, son of Louis Anthony and Mary (Nesby) Jensen.
The father, born in Jutland, Denmark, came to the United States in 1873 and was a merchant until his death at Williamsburg, Virginia, February 12, 1918. His wife, born also in Jutland, died at Richmond, Virginia, May 26, 1929.
Mr. Jensen attended elementary schools in Virginia and Maryland, and afterward was a student at Boyles Business College in Omaha. During 1909 and 1910 he was a telegraph operator for the Union Pacific Railroad. Since that time he has been in business for himself. He is proprietor of the Jensen Mercantile Company at the present time.
On August 10, 1912, he was married to Bertha Mable Zimmerman at Big Spring, Nebraska. She was born there on January 19, 1895, of German and Irish ancestry, daughter of Andrew H. and Mary Jane (Henry) Zimmerman. Her, father was born in Ohio, November 30, 1860, and died August 6, 1906 at Big Spring. He was a farmer near Big Spring for a good many years. Her mother was born in New York, August 9, 1871 and died July 26, 1926 at Big Spring. Mrs. Jensen is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, the Eastern Star, the Rebekahs, and the Royal Neighbors. They have four children, Lavern A., born February 17, 1914; Lyle R., born September 24, 1915; Dale C., born March 2, 1921; and Jimmie A., born March 15, 1925. Lavern is a student at the New Mexico Military Institute at Roswell, New Mexico.
Mr. Jensen is a Republican. He has resided in Nebraska for 24 years, and has been active in civic and fraternal organizations for some time. He is affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church, is a member of the Red Cross, the Federation of Nebraska Retailers, the Masons, the Odd Fellows, the Modern Woodmen of America, and from 1929 to 1931 was a member of the Big Spring School Board. Frank Jensen
A physician at Newman Grove, Nebraska since 1903, Frank Jensen was born at Council Bluffs, Iowa, July 22, 1880, the son of Lars and Mary (Sandstrom) Jensen. His father, who was a farmer, was born in Denmark in 1851 and died at El Reno, Oklahoma, July 10, 1915; he served as justice of the peace for years. His mother was born in Denmark and died at El Reno, Oklahoma, October 1, 1902.
Dr. Jensen attened (sic) rural school and was a student at Western Iowa College, Council Bluffs, for two years. In 1903 he received the M. D. degree at the University of Nebraska. He is past president of the Madison County Medical Society, and the Elkhorn Valley Medical society, and is a member of the medical firm Jensen & Morris at Newmann Grove, Nebraska. He served as first mayor of the city and has been active in civic affairs there for several years.
He is a member of the American Medical Association, and the Nebraska State Medical Society. His fraternal organizations include: Odd Fellows; Modern Woodmen of America; Royal Neighbors of America; and Rebekahs. He has been a member of the Red Cross for many years He is a Scottish Rite Mason and Shriner.
His marriage to Rose Emoline Batten was solemnized at Plattsmouth, Nebraska, October 6, 1906. Mrs. Jensen, who was a milliner, was born at Plattsmouth, June 1, 1884, and died at Newman Grove, December 10, 1912. One son was born to them, Russell J., born November 23, 1909, who is a musician and instructor of piano at Norfolk, Nebraska. On February 15, 1928, Dr. Jensen was married to Inger Engelsgjerd at Newman Grove. They have a daughter, Frances Joan, born August 26, 1930. Residence: Newman Grove.
Jens Christian Jensen
Jens Christian Jensen was born in Denmark, January 12, 1885, the son of Jens Jorgen Jensen and Josena (Jergenson) Jenson, and for the past 39 years has been a resident of Nebraska. His father, who was a farmer, was born in Denmark, September 12, 1855, and died at Stanton, Nebraska, December 30, 1928. His mother was born in Denmark, June 8, 1861.
Mr. Jensen has been a carpenter and contractor at Ainsworth for the past 25 years, and at this time is a member of the Ainsworth Commercial Club, is serving as mayor of the city, and holds membership in the Red Cross. His hobby is building radios.
He was married at Ainsworth, July 18, 1906, to Amy Carolina Bower who was born at Ainsworth, June 14, 1887. Four children were born to them: Sibylia Jensen, December 2, 1908, who died December 12, 1908; Kenneth W., July 15, 1910; Peter, April 2, 1914; and Ruben Holland, December 22, 1921. Residence: Ainsworth.
John Christian Jensen
One of Nebraska's leading educators, John C. Jensen has lived in the state all his life and has taken a prominent part in the educational and civic affairs in his community. He was born at Utica, on October 19, 1880, the son of Frantz Peter and Ellen (Jensen) Jensen. His father, who was born at Nestved, Denmark, December 16, 1842, and died at University Place, Nebraska. April 17, 1909, was a farmer; his father was a forester in the employ of the Danish government. His mother was born at Holbek, Denmark, December 9, 1842, and died at Lincoln, April 12, 1925; her father was a weaver.
Professor Jensen attended the rural schools of Seward County, and in 1897 was graduated from the high school at Utica. He was awarded the B. S. degree from Nebraska Wesleyan University, 1909; and received his A. M. degree at the University of Nebraska, 1916. He was a student at the University of Iowa, 1916; the University of Chicago, 1922; and the University of Nebraska, 1929-31. He was high school valedictorian and is a member of Sigma Xi, Phi Kappa Phi, Pi Mu Epsilon.
He has held the following positions in the educational field: teacher in rural schools in Seward County, 1897-01; superintendent of schools at Beaver City, Nebraska, 1903-07; professor of physics at Nebraska Wesleyan University from 1909 to the present time. Since 1921 he has been director of broadcasting at station WCAJ, and has written various articles on radio, lightning discharges. and spark potentials. He is a member of the Institute of Radio Engineers, the American Association of University Professors, American Interprofessional Institute, the Nebraska State Teachers Association, The Nebras-

kana Society, and the Symposium. He is a former scout master and commissioner of the Boy Scouts of America; and served as deputy commissioner in the Lnicoln (sic) Council of this organization for three years. He is a fellow in the American Association for the Advancement of Science; is representative of I. R. E., on the council of the American Association for Advancement of Science; is a fellow of the American Physical Society, and a member of the American Optical Society, the American Meteorological Society, the American Geophysical Union, and the Nebraska Academy of Science of which he was president in 1914 and 1922.
Professor Jensen is a member of the East Lincoln Business Men's Association. During the World War he served as civilian instructor in radio at the University of Nebraska. He is affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church of Lincoln. Politically, he is an Independent Republican.
On August 25, 1909, he was united in marriage with Susan Elizabeth Allington at Alma, Nebraska. She was born at Blue Springs, Nebraska, April 23, 1885, and died at University Place, December 25, 1918; before her marriage she was a teacher. Two children were born to this marriage; Robert R., born January 9, 1912; and Margaret Ruth, born March 27, 1917. Robert is a radio operator. Mr. Jensen was married to Emma Wilhelmsen at Omaha, August 22, 1922. Residence; Lincoln.
M. P. Jensen
M. P. Jensen, banker, was born in Denmark, December 22, 1885, son of Jens Peter and Caroline (Madsen) Jensen. The father, a farmer, died in Denmark, and the mother in Denmark also in 1895. Mr. M. P. Jensen came to the United States in 1903 landing in New York City. He then moved to Centerville, South Dakota where he lived until he went to Blair to attend school and has been a resident of Nebraska since.
In 1906 he was graduated from Blair college, and prior thereto attended public and high schools. From 1908 until 1917 he was in the lumber and hardware business at Chappell, and since 1917 has been vice president of the Chappell State Bank.
Active in civic and fraternal organizations, Mr. Jensen is president of the library board, a member of the board of regents of the Deuel County High School, and a member of the Deuel County Fair Board. He is a member of the Rotary Club, the Masons, the Eastern Star, and the Methodist Episcopal Church. His hobbies are trees and flowers, while his sports are trout fishing and golf.
On June 17, 1914, he was married to Mary Waneta Frederick, daughter of J. F. and Elizabeth (Stuart) Frederick, at Chappell. She was born at St. Paul, Nebraska, November 26, 1891, She is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, the P. E. O., the Eastern Star and is now president of the city school board. They have two children, Marie E., born July 27, 1915; and Mervin Paul, born May 19, 1920. Residence: Chappell.
Peter Jensen
Born in Denmark, March 7, 1877, Peter Jensen is the son of Anders and Karen (Pedcrson) Jensen. His father, a farmer, was born in Denmark and died at Dannebrog, Nebraska, November 24, 1908. His mother was born in Denmark and is living today at Boelus.
Mr. Jensen is a merchant at Boelus, and is serving as president of the Boelus State Bank and as vice president of the Citizens National Bank at St. Paul, Nebraska. He has been in business since 1893, and for many years has been a director in the State Bank of Dannebrog, Nebraska, he was treasurer of the local school board from 1900 to 1925, is a life member of the Red Cross, and holds membership in the Nebraskana Society.
He is interested in baseball, and in 1928 was manager of the winning Tri County League Baseball team at Boelus. He was united in marriage with Henriette F. Hatt at Dannebrog, December 20, 1899. Mrs. Jensen was born in Denmark, June 8, 1877, and died at Boelus, November 21, 1918. They have three children: Anna V., born January 30, 1901; Karen K., born July 26, 1905; and Anders H., born December 8, 1908, who married Lucille Christiansen.
Mr. Jensen is now married to Anna Klausen. To the latter marriage one daughter was born, Janet H., December 11, 1924. Residence: Boelus.
John Jeppson
For the past 46 years John Jeppson has been engaged in the drug business at Mead, Nebraska. He was born at Halland, Sweden, December 24, 1851, the son of Sven and Nilla Jeppson. His father, a farmer, was born in Sweden, November 11, 1815, and died at Mead, May 15, 1894; he came to this country in 1867. His mother was born in Sweden, September 17, 1813, and died at Ottumwa, Iowa, February 18, 1885.
Mr. Jeppson attended public schools and later took a course in pharmacy. He is engaged in business under the firm name of John Jeppson & Son, at Mead. From 1924 to 1929 he served as county chairman of the Republican party in Saunders County, and for six years he was secretary of the board of education there. He is affiliated with the Alma Lutheran Church and The Nebraskana Society.
He was married at Muntersville, Iowa, May 3, 1876, to Emma Knudson. Mrs. Jeppson was born at Muntersville, November 3, 1856, and died at Mead May 3, 1925. Their four children are: Alvin, born November 25, 1881, who is a graduate of the University of Iowa; Esther, born November 5, 1883, who married George H. Nelson, a farmer; Edna E., born November 21, 1886, who is a teacher; and Ruth V., born May 27, 1892, who married August Kling, a farmer. Residence: Mead.
Paul Jessen
Paul Jessen was born at Nebraska City, Otoe County, Nebraska, September 16, 1865, the son of Andrew and Margaret Jane (Martin) Jessen. His father, who was a farmer, was born in Denmark, November 29, 1827, and came to America in 1847. He died at Nebraska City, March 5, 1867.
His mother, who was born in Madison County, Indiana, July 1, 1829, and died at Nebraska City, February 22, 1898, was a teacher in one of the first schools for white children in the territory of Nebraska, in 1855.
Mr. Jessen was graduated from the Nebraska City High School in 1883, and later attended Cornell College, at Mount Vernon, Iowa, and Washington University at St. Louis, Missouri. He was admitted to the bar at Nebraska City, June, 1893, and since that time has practiced law there. For four years he served as city attorney of Nebraska City; was county attorney of Otoe County for four years; and was judge of the second judicial district for eight years. He is a director of the Merchant's National Bank at Nebraska City; has lived in this community for 65 years and for 38 years has been a lawyer and judge in Otoe County.
In the Spanish-American War he served as a first sergeant of Company C, second regiment, Nebraska Volunteer Infantry. He is a member of the Spanish War Veterans; is a member of the county, state and American bar associations and in 1924 was president of the Nebraska State Bar Association. He is a member of the Red Cross and the Nebraska City Chamber of Commerce, and is a Republican.
He was united in marriage with Emma Rose Schneider at Nebraska City, October 4, 1905. Mrs. Jessen, who was

born of German parentage at Avoea, Iowa, October 24, 1873, was a clerk before her marriage. Two children were born to this union: Mary Louise, born August 31, 1908; and Margaret Jane, born January 30, 1914. Residence: Nebraska City.
Clifford Martin Jewell
Clifford Martin Jewell was born at Firth, Nebraska, September 24, 1900, son of Charles W. and Emma Viola (Martin) Jewell. The father, born in Ohio, February 27, 1868, is a salesman and a former member of the Nebraska National Guard. The mother was born in Madison County, Ohio, December 10, 1871.
Upon his graduation from the public school at Elmwood, Nebraska, in 1916, Mr. Jewell entered Elmwood High School, from which he was graduated in 1920. While there he received four letters in football. During the terms, 1920-21, Mr. Jewell was a student at Cotner College, and in 1925 received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Nebraska.
From 1923 until 1924 he was a teacher in the Gordon High School, and during the years 1925-29 was superintendent of schools at Hay Springs. In 1929 he became a member of the firm of Jewell & Stark, retail grocers at Gordon.
His marriage to Lelah Sarah Hutt was solemnized at Gordon, June 4, 1925. Mrs. Jewell was born at Gordon, July 19, 1900. She was a student of Simpson College in Iowa, and was a member of Mu Phi Epsilon. She is also a member of the P. E. O. and past president of the County Federated Club. They have a daughter, Jane, born December 11, 1926.
While at the University of Nebraska, Mr. Jewell was a member of the Reserve Officers Training Corps two years, and P. D. K. He is a member of the East Lincoln Christian Church at Lincoln, the Kiwanis International, The Nebraskana Society, the Parent Teachers Association (president 1925-26), and the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons at Gordon. His hobby is science. Residence: Gordon.
Joseph Jicha
One of Nebraska's pioneer merchants is Joseph Jicha, who has been engaged in business at Milligan for the past 37 years. He was born at Slatina, Szechoslovakia (sic), November 11, 1863, the son of Thomas and Anna (Reznc) Jicha. His father, who was born in Czechoslovakia and died there in 1871, was a farmer most of his life. His mother was born at Slatina, and died at Ohiowa, Nebraska, December 10, 1910.
Mr. Jicha attended school in Europe and later studied at night school in this country. He holds stock in various banks, in addition to his private business ownership, and is a director of the Chamber of Commerce at Milligan. He is a member of the Knights of Pythias, has been a member of the school board for 13 years, and holds membership in the Nebraskana Society. His hobby is reading.
He was united in marriage with Mary Kohout at Omaha, Nebraska, October 12, 1889. Mrs. Jicha was born at Poline, Szechoslovakia (sic), May 11, 1871. They have the following children: Mayme, born August 12, 1892, who married Joseph Vajrecka; Anna, born April 23, 1895; Joseph, born June 23, 1897; Libbie, born October 10, 1904; and Helen, born October 10, 1904. The four daughters are all well educated, three of them having taught school and one being a nurse. Joseph is a merchant.
Mr. Jicha served as chairman of the Liberty bond drive in the World War. His political preference is the Republican Party. Residence: Milligan.
Walter Lyman Jillson
Born at Heath, Massachusetts, September 21, 1857, Walter Lyman Jillson first came to Nebraska in 1879.
In 1895 he went to Arkansas to live, returning in 1896, since which date he has resided in Nebraska.
His father, Lewis O. Jillson, was born at Whitingham, Vermont, September 23, 1823, and died there on August 25, 1875. He was a talented man, a farmer, carpenter, wheelwright, shoemaker and sawmill operator. He served three years and three months in the Civil War, in General Grant's Army, and was descended from early English settlers in the New England states.
His mother, Sarah Elvira Chase, was born in Heath, Massachusetts, December 23, 1836, of English ancestry. She made four trips from her home in Whitingham to Stuart, to visit her sons. Her death occurred at Vernon, Vermont, in January, 1913.
Walter Lyman Jillson attended district and town school in New England until the age of 18. He was a merchant for three years in Stuart, was later a hay dealer, and for many years has owned and operated a farm at Stuart. He is an elder in the First Presbyterian Church, and has been superintendent of the Sunday School for many years. Recently he was made a life member of the Nebraskana Society.
On March 20, 1881, he was married to Anna Corlis at Linwood. She was born at Linwood and died at Orchard, in April, 1882. He was married to Laura Viola Baysinger at Canton, South Dakota on November 21, 1886, and to them were born nine children, seven of whom are living.

Mrs. Jillson was born at Lena, Illinois, January 14, 1861. Her father was born in Kentucky of Scotch and German ancestry; and her mother in Indiana of Scotch and Irish descent. Her father was a minister and her brother a soldier in the Civil War. Mr. and Mrs. Jillson's children all attended the same district school and were graduated from Stuart High School. Elvira is a teacher, Ruth and Susan are teachers, Paul is a graduate in veterinary surgery from Ames, Naomi was a graduate nurse. Hester is a teacher and a graduate of Nebraska Wesleyan, while Lyman is a graduate in engineering from the University of Nebraska. Residence: Stuart.
John Allen Jimerson
John A. Jimerson, educator, was born at Miltonvale, Cloud County, Kansas, March 24, 1890. His father, James Lewis Jimerson, who was a farmer, was born in Iowa, July 17, 1863, and died at Liberty, Nebraska, in May, 1926. He is descended from Scotch settlers in America in 1800. Lillian Estella (Bowman) Jimerson, mother of John A., was born in Ohio, June 28, 1873. Her father was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic, and a Civil War veteran.
Mr. Jimerson was educated first in the Liberty High School, being graduated in 1906. In 1922 he was awarded his A. B. degree from Peru State Teachers' College, and in 1928 received his A. M. from the University of Nebraska. While in school he was a member of the glee club, the college orchestra and band, the dramatic club, the Philomathean Literary Society and Phi Delta Kappa fraternity.

Haywood, at Osakis, Minnesota. Before her marriage Mrs. Jimerson was assistant cashier in a bank. She was born in Dakota, May 21, 1895. There are two children: Meredith Blanche, born May 4, 1921, and Mary Shirley, born January 23, 1924.
A resident of Nebraska for 38 years Mr. Jimerson has held various executive and educational positions. First a rural school teacher and high school principal, he has served as superintendent of schools at Shelby, Edgar, Stromsburg and Auburn. He is instructor at summer sessions of the Peru State Teachers' College, and is the author of many educational articles, including Permanent Cumulative High School Record. A public speaker and lecturer of note, he is much in demand as a speaker before graduating classes. Among his lectures are The Salt of the Earth; Follow the Leader; Peace and Preparedness, or Piffle; Sharpening the Tools in Arithmetic and Quality and Quantity in Reading.
During the World War he served two years in the infantry, and now holds the rank of major in the Infantry Reserve Corps of the United States Army. He is a member of the department of superintendents of the National Education Association, vice president of the Nebraska State Teachers' Association, and a member of the School Masters' Club. He is former president of district number two of the Nebraska State Teachers' Association.
Mr. Jimerson is a Mason, a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Kiwanis Club and of the American Legion. He is affiliated with the First Methodist Episcopal Church of Auburn. He is a member of the Auburn Country Club. His out-of-door sports include tennis, golf, hunting and fishing. Residence: Auburn.
John Robert Jirdon
John Robert Jirdon, prominent merchant and executive, was born at Elk Creek, Nebraska, July 8, 1895, son of John and Nannie Elizabeth (Neal) Jirdon. The father was born in Pekin, Illinois, July 12, 1864, and is a farmer, whose parents came from Ireland about 1840. His wife Nannie was born near Elk Creek, February 14, 1866. Her father was Irish, and her mother Scotch-Irish and Welsh.
Mr. Jirdon attended the public schools of Gering and Morrill, and was graduated from Morrill high school in 1912. From that time until August, 1915, was employed by the R. S. Proudfit Company, at Minatare and Angus, Nebraska. From August 1915 until January 1, 1924, Mr. Jirdon was a partner with W. R. Preston at Morrill, in the grain and lumber business.
Since January 1, 1924, he has been in the wholesale and retail grain, feed and coal business at Morrill.
Mr. Jirdon is the director of the First National Bank of Morrill, and president of the North Platte Valley Grain and Feed Dealers Association. He. is a member of the Merrill Commercial Club, and a member of the National Grain and Feed Dealers Association. He is at the present time serving as president of the Morrill Wrap board, and is a Mason (Royal Arch, Knight Templar). On September 7, 1920, he was married to Gladys Marguerite Remender, of Morrill, at Seottsbluff. She was born at Creston, Nebraska, on December 2, 1897, of German and Scotch-Irish ancestry. They have two children, Joyce Remender, born May 10, 1921, and Bonnie Jean, born December 3, 1924.
In politics Mr. Jirdon is independent. During the late war he served as a private, first sergeant and retired as 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army. He served from August 1918 until January 1919. He is a member of the American Legion. His sport is golf, and his hobby is business. Residence: Morrill.
Joseph Frank Jirovec
Joseph F. Jirovec, executive and prominent band leader of Nebraska, was born at Morse Bluffs, Nebraska, March 20, 1884. His father, John Jirovec, a farmer, was born in Czechoslovakia, and died at Clarkson, Nebraska, November 10, 1919. Mary Jirovec, his mother, was born in Czechoslovakia.
Mr. Jirovec attended rural schools and was a student at the Fremont Normal School one year. He has studied music at home since he was 15 years of age and at the age of 19 organized and directed a band. He studied trumpet under Professor Don G. Berry of Lincoln and under Dr. Phelps of Omaha; and was awarded a diploma in band direction at the Vandercook School of Music at Chicago.
He was a restaurant manager for a time; owned a meat market; was manager of the Omaha Elevator Company at Brainard, Nebraska; served as manager of the Nye-Schneider-Fowler Company, and the Lumber & Grain Company of Clarkson; and since 1919 has been manager of the Farmers Union Co-operative Supply Company at Clarkson. He has also managed a lumber grain and coal business there during the past 12 years.
Mr. Jirovec is known throughout the state as the director of popular bands and dance orchestras, and has won a great deal of commendation from various parts of the middle west. He is the director of the Leigh Band, the Clarkson Band, and the Jirovec Orchestra, all of which have ranked high in musical contests. The Clarkson Band was placed in Class A in the Omaha Band Contest for two consecutive years, and the third year was awarded third prize. Mr. Jirovec is now giving private music lessons in addition to his other business activities.
During the World War he was a bugler in the home guard, and served on loan drives committees. He holds membership in the Red Cross; the Chamber of Commerce; the Modern Woodmen of America; and The Nebraskana Society. He is affiliated with Saint Cyril Catholic Church of Clarkson. Among his out of door sports are baseball and hiking. He is a Democrat.
On July 30, 1907, he was united in marriage with Tony Koza at Omaha, Nebraska. Mrs. Jirovec, who was born at Clarkson, January 21, 1886, is interested in home talent dramatic work. They have two children: Lambert, born November 25, 1908, who is studying music at the University of Nebraska, and will graduate this year in violin study; and Donald, born August 3, 1916, who is studying piano along with his public school work. Residence: Clarkson.
Albert E. Johansen
Albert E. Johansen, former rancher, was born at Yankton, South Dakota, January 13, 1883, son of Christian Andrew and Anna Marie (Wortman) Johansen.
The father was born in Denmark, March 1, 1841, and came to America at the age of 19. His parents, Peter and Augusta (Rovbye) Johansen, were married in the old church at Roeskilde, Dumkirke, Denmark. Christian Johansen was a farmer, whose death occurred at Hay Springs in October, 1914. His wife, Anna Marie, was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, July 6, 1843, and died at Hay Springs, August 10, 1922. She was the mother of ten children, and the daughter of Theodore Wortman and Kathryn Kohler. They were pioneer settlers of Sheridan County, settling there in 1886.
Mr. Johansen attended country school in Sheridan County, and was graduated from Hay Springs High School. He engaged in farming and ranching until 1920, when he was forced to stop on account of ill health. He spent considerable time in a hospital at Rochester, Minnesota, and after returning worked a few years in the local post-office. In the fall of 1929, he purchased a half interest in a hardware business, which he still owns, the firm being Hagedorn and Johansen. He is a director of the First National Bank at Hay Springs. He is a Democrat.
His marriage to Ethel Marcy, a daughter of Sidney S. and Harriet Jane (Blood) Marcy, was solemnized at Hay Springs, July 19, 1905. They were prominent pioneer settlers of Sheridan County, settling there in 1888.
