Charles Mitchell
Charles Mitchell; son of John D. R. and Catharine S. (Evans) Mitchell, was born in New York City, August 26, 1850. John D. R. Mitchell was born at Hartford, Connecticut, March 27, 1812, and when a young man was a manufacturer of quill pens in New York City. His ancestors had come from Scotland, in the earlier days of our country. John Mitchell later came to Sauk City, Wisconsin, and engaged in farming until his death on December 21, 1865, Catharine Evans Mitchell was born in Birmingham, England, June 10, 1823, and died at Highland, Minnesota, December 1, 1883. A fine vocalist, she was the daughter of William Evans, a manufacturer of steel cutlery in the city of Birmingham, England.
Educated in the common schools of Wisconsin, Charles Mitchell has been a resident of Nebraska since October 11, 1877, when he brought his family in a covered wagon. He had married Laura J. Bennett at Reedsburg, Wisconsin, on September 19, 1877, and at the time they removed here there were three children, one of them an infant. The family took up government land in 1880. Mrs. Mitchell, who was born at Buffalo, New York, November 12, 1853, was of German descent. There were ten children born to them, two of whom are deceased; seven of whom were born in Nebraska.
Lillie, born July 2, 1872, married Thomas Cox; James, born May 25, 1874, married Emma McKune; Lucretia, born May 5, 1876, married W. F. Willard; Callie, born September 18, 1878, married Elwood Good; Charles, born April 24, 1880, married Mary Schultz, and died March 29, 1916; John, born February 17, 1882, died February 14, 1899; George, born December 10, 1886; Benjamin, born June 8, 1888; Clarence, born June 13, 1890, and Edith, born January 10, 1893.
For ten years Mr. Mitchell taught in the schools of Dixon County, and in 1891 went into the mercantile business. He has filled many local political offices, among them the following: county supervisor (1888), member of the county board two years; assessor 3 years; justice of the peace, school director and treasurer and delegate to conventions. He was also nominated for county clerk on the Republican ticket, but was unsuccessful. Four years ago he was elected police judge at Allen, and is still holding office. In 1931 he received his diploma from the Radio School of the Air at Norfolk, Nebraska. He is the composer of many unpublished songs, and two which were recently published: Sunny California (copyrighted 1927); and When the Birds Come Again in the Spring (published 1928). He is a violinist, and enjoys playing old time music, and won second prize in a state contest.
From 1878 until 1890 he was a director on the school board, and in the fall of 1903 was appointed rural mail carrier on Route No. 1 from Dixon, Nebraska. He circulated the petition and had the route established, and was the first carrier on it and circulated a petition for public roads. During the World War Mr. Mitchell was the purchaser of $500 worth of government bonds, and otherwise assisted in war work. He is a member of the Springbank Society of Friends, and has taken an active part in church and Sunday School work for twenty years.
Mr. Mitchell has written an autobiography which he hopes to have published. Residence: Allen. (Photograph in Album).
Edward Joshua Mitchell
Edward Joshua Mitchell was born at Fulton, Illinois, May 28, 1865, the son of John Calvin Mitchell and Caroline (Van Eaton) Mitchell. His father was an early Nebraskan, who traveled through Nebraska territory in 1860, when on his way to Pikes Peak, Colorado. The two following winters he taught school in Nebraska. A Civil War veteran, he was an officer and fought in the battle of Chancelorsville. In 1889, he died at Indianola, Nebraska, after having lived for nine years in Gage County, and two years at Indianola.
His wife, Caroline, taught school in Nebraska before her marriage. They were married in Sidney, Iowa, in 1864.
Edward Mitchell attended the Fulton public schools and the Shenandoah College. Of his marriage to Tillie Barnes, two daughters were born, both of whom are deceased. Beulah, born in 1895, was graduated from the Hebron High School and the Deshler College. She was married to Amos Stauffer; she died in 1923, and is survived by two children. The other daughter, Mary, was born in 1900 and died in 1910.
In 1893, Mr. Mitchell became editor and publisher of the Indianola Courier, and later was associated with his brother-in-law, C. W. Barnes, in McCook, Nebraska, where they published the McCook Republican. In 1910, he became editor and publisher of the Deshler Rustler, and has since continued.
Mr. Mitchell was president of the Deshler Commercial Club from 1.911-25. He has been secretary of the County Fair Association of Thayer County since its organization in 1912, and since 1921 he has been a member of the State Board of Agriculture. In 1925 he was president of the County Fair Managers in Nebraska.
He is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church, and the Order of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons. He is a Knight Templar, and is a member of the Nebraskana Society. Residence: Deshler.
Fred B. Mitchell
Fred B. Mitchell, pioneer resident of Nebraska, was born at Jacksonville, Illinois, June 1, 1874, the son of Charles W. and Mary (Libby) Mitchell. His father, who was born in Maine in 1840 and died at Chester, Nebraska, in 1884, was a carpenter and served as a soldier in the Civil War; his ancestry was Scotch and English. His mother, who was born in Maine, September 4, 1835, and died at Hebron, Nebraska, in 1925, was descended from the Libby family which settled in America among the first New Englanders; members of the family were prominent in the early history of this country.
Mr. Mitchell attended school in Thayer County. He has lived in Nebraska for 48 years and has been a merchant, automobile dealer, and farmer. Throughout his other business activities, however, he has always been a successful stockraiser and farmer in Thayer County. In 1925 he was manager for the Chevrolet Company at Hebron, was dealer in Whippet automobiles from 1927 to 1930, and since 1930 has been the proprietor of the Mitchell Chevrolet Company.
He was at one time a member of the Kiwanis Club and the Commercial Club at Hebron, and is now affiliated with the First Presbyterian Church of Hebron and the Nebraskana Society. He was formerly a member of the Modern Woodmen of America. Mr. Mitchell is interested in all outdoor sports, but is particularly fond of travel.
His marriage to Amy Margaret Kitt occurred at Hebron, March 4, 1903. Mrs. Mitchell, who was born at Eddyville, Iowa, February 18, 1877, was a public school teacher for eight years prior to her marriage. Her ancestry is English and Pennsylvania Dutch.
Five children were born to this marriage: Charles S., born May 22, 1904, who married Armelina Brin; Marie K., born November 4, 1905; Dorothy J., born August 16, 1907; Edna May, born August 21, 1910; and Wiley Eugene, born February 14, 1916. Charles is associated with his father in the automobile business. Marie, who is bookkeeper for the Mitchell Chevrolet Company, was graduated from Hebron High School, completed a course at Pasadena Business College in California, 1927, and

was graduated from Hebron College in 1928; she was a teacher in Thayer County schools for two years.
Dorothy was graduated from Hebron High School in 1924 and from Hebron College in 1929. She was a student at Hastings College for a year and is now entering her third year as teacher in the public school at Chester. Edna was graduated from high school at Hebron in 1928 and is now a teacher at Hubbell, Nebraska. Wiley is a junior in high school. Residence: Hebron.
Emmet Charles Mitchell
The Reverend Emmet Charles Mitchell, pastor of the Crawford Methodist Episcopal Church, was born at Fremont, Nebraska, December 6, 1887, son of Oliver Huston and Sadie (Headrick) Mitchell.
His father, born in Missouri, July 30, 1861, was a farmer, descended from early settlers in America. He died February 19, 1932, at North Loop, Nebraska. His father was a minister, a veteran of the Civil War, and a member of the Missouri legislature. Sadie Headrick was born in Iowa, July, 1865, and is also descended from early settlers in America.
Mr. Mitchell was graduated from Fremont High School, and in 1914 received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Nebraska Wesleyan University. He was a member of the debating team while there, took part in state oratorical contests, and was elected to Pi Kappa Delta, an honorary debating and oratorical society.
In 1910 he entered the Nebraska conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and until 1914 was a student pastor. Since that time he has served at Epworth Church in Lincoln, and the Methodist Episcopal churches at North Loup, Friend, Peru, Broken Bow, and Valentine.
On November 4, 1914, he was married to Pearl Angie Phinney at Lincoln. Mrs. Mitchell was born at Tamora, Nebraska, February 12, 1892, the daughter of a physician who was a graduate of Rush Medical College. Mrs. Mitchell attended Wesleyan University, and is a member of the Eastern Star. To them were born four children, Lawrence Emmet, December 22, 1916; Rosamond Pearl, June 1, 1919; Harold Verne, March 2, 1922; and Donald Marion, May 14, 1924.
Mr. Mitchell is a Republican. He is chairman of the Crawford Boy Scout council, a member of the local Chamber of Commerce, a Mason and member of the Eastern Star. Residence: Crawford.
Hayden William Mitchell
Hayden William Mitchell, farmer and editor, was born at Salisbury, New York, March 12, 1864, son of Henry and Lois (Shedd) Mitchell. The father was born in Newport, New York, December 1, 1829, and died there on January 2, 1900. He was a harness maker, who enlisted in the Civil War and served nearly two years. He went as a Democrat and returned as a Republican, full fledged, and dyed in the wool. His father was born in Scotland in 1803, and came to the United States as a young man. He was a hatter by trade. His name was McMitchell, the father later changing the name to Mitchell.
Lois Shedd was born at Salisbury, New York, November 18, 1828, and died at Clearwater, Nebraska, June 14, 1898. She was a weaver. She came to Columbus, Nebraska in 1877, locating on a homestead in Frenchtown township in 1880.
Mr. Mitchell attended public school in Salisbury Center, Newport, and Elm Creek, New York, and Columbus and Bellwood, Nebraska. He completed his education in a log school house in Frenchtown township near Clearwater.
On December 25, 1887, he was married to Mollie Mulvina Mummert at Neligh, Nebraska. She was born at Logan, Iowa, November 4, 1865, and died at Clearwater, February 7, 1911. She was a school teacher of French and German descent. To them were born the following children, William, on October 4, 1887; Josephine, on September 6, 1891; Goldie, January 6, 1893; Fred December 15, 1895; Katherine, October 10, 1897; Cressie, September 26, 1899; Rachael, July 28, 1905; Maude, August 1, 1889, who died in November, 1901; Marcelous, September 22, 1901, who died in November, 1906.
William is married to Jessie Rogers; Goldie is married to Homer McClellan; Katherine is married to Raymond Bennett; Cressie to Miles Snider; and Rachael to Charles Nolze. Fred enlisted in the Marines in the World War, serving two years, and was promoted to the rank of corporal.
At the present time Mr. Mitchell is serving as editor of the Clearwater Record. He has lived in Nebraska 53 years, one at Columbus, two at Bellwood and 50 at Clearwater. In his early days he was a farmer and teacher, and as a side issue engaged in the mercantile business. He is an extensive land owner and has never missed raising a crop on any of his farms, and in addition to running his paper is much interested in his agricultural interests. He is a Republican, but independent. He was candidate for state representative in 1930, but was defeated.
During the late war he was a member of the home guard, a four minute speaker, and active in all other civilian projects. As a child, Mr. Mitchell followed the Universalist religion of his mother, but has lately attended the Methodist Episcopal Church. He is a member of the Red Cross, the Community Club, the Modern Woodmen of America, and the Odd Fellows (30 years), the Nebraskana Society, and the Nebraska State Historical Society. He is a member of the Clearwater Fire Department. He is an ardent baseball fan. Residence: Clearwater.
William Frank Mitchell
William Frank Mitchell was born at Knoxville, Iowa, December 12, 1877, the son of John William and Celestia (Kelley) Mitchell. His father, who was a physician, was born at Salem, Indiana, June 19, 1847, and died at Superior, Nebraska, August 26, 1921. His mother was born in Ohio, January 25, 1851, and died at Superior, April 31, 1926.
Dr. Mitchell was graduated from Superior High School in 1895 and in 1899 received the B. Sc. degree at Ottawa University, Ottawa, Kansas. He was awarded the M. D. degree at the University of Illinois in 1902. Dr. Mitchell has been engaged in the practice of medicine at Superior since 1902. He is a member of the Nebraska State Medical Society, the Nuckolls County Medical Society, and various civic organization at Superior. He is a Mason.
On July 12, 1905, his marriage to Alice G. Felt was solemnized at Superior. Mrs. Mitchell was born at Blairstown, Iowa, January 13, 1879. Their two children are: Louise, born April 25, 1907, who married Herman F. Ottex; and Francis, born June 7, 1911. Residence: Superior.
Edward Rudolph Mittelstadt
Edward R. Mittelstadt was born at Dunajemzy, Russia, July 13, 1872. He was graduated from a church school in Dunajemzy, in 1888. Julius Carl Mittelstadt, father of Edward, was born at Westphalin, Prussia, June 15, 1831, and died at Dunajemzy, January 15, 1880. He was a cloth manufacturer. Emelia Augusta Torinus, mother of Edward, was born at Danajemzy, June 5, 1839, and died at Norfolk, Nebraska, June 20, 1913.
On August 11, 1898, he was united in marriage with Helene A. Pockrandt, at Laurel, Nebraska. She was born at Dunajemzy, Russia, November 8, 1881. They have six children: Hila A., born October 27, 1899; Alfred E., born

March 28, 1902; Oscar L., born July 6, 1905; Edwin R., born August 13, 1907; Alma H., born March 23, 1910; and Paul H., born September 20, 1914. Alfred is a lumber salesman; Oscar an electrician, and Edwin is studying art in Chicago.
Mr. Mittelstadt is a Republican. He started in the lumber and hardware business at Laurel, on July 12, 1893. He now is manager of Mittelstadt Brothers Lumber and Hardware.
He is affiliated with the St. John's Lutheran Church. He served for ten years on the town board, and ten years on the school board. He is director of the Laurel Building and Loan, a member of the LoVal Lake Club, and is a Mason. His favorite sport is football, and his hobby is gardening. Residence: Laurel.
Albert Riser Modisett
Albert Riser Modisett, cattle rancher and Nebraska Master Farmer, was born near Phillippi, Barbour County, in what is now West Virginia, December 13, 1861, son of Augustus Bartlett and Nancy Celia (Stout) Modisett.
The father, born near Phillippi, October 15, 1817, was a farmer and cattle raiser and dealer, the son of Hannah and Uriah Modisett of English and Dutch descent. Augustus Bartlett Modisett served eight years as sheriff and one term in the West Virginia State Legislature. He was president of the Farmers Bank of Phillippi, where his death occurred on February 26, 1881.
Nancy Celia Stout was born near Clarksburg, West Virginia, February 24, 1830, and died near Rushville, Nebraska, March 25, 1920. When a young woman she taught school. After her marriage she lived on a farm in West Virginia and later in Nebraska. She was the daughter of Abner Stout who was of English descent.
Raised on a farm until the age of 20, Mr. Modisett went to business college at Poughkeepsie, New York, and after graduation there worked in New York City as a bookkeeper and assistant cashier for Nash Whiton & Company for a year. Returning to farming, he spent a year at Taylor, Texas, and then drove cattle up the Texas trails. After a year on a ranch in Montana, at the age of 25, he located on his own ranch at Rushville, Nebraska, where he has since resided. This ranch consists of more than 31,000 acres of deeded land and approximately 4000 acres of leased land. In 1931 Mr. Modisett was made a Nebraska Master Farmer.
For a number of years he was a director in the Stockmen's National Bank of Rushville. He is a member of the Rushville Commercial Club, vice president of the Nebraska Stockgrowers Association, and a member of the executive committee, and second vice president of the American National Livestock Association. Recently Mr. Modisett made a trip to Texas to attend the annual meeting of the American National Livestock Association.
One of Sheridan County's most outstanding citizens, Mr. Modisett has been treasurer of School District 137 in his county for, years. He was finance committeeman for his local precinct during the World War, is a Scottish Rite Mason and a member of the Shrine. He is affiliated with the Democratic party. He enjoys hunting, but his hobby is really the livestock business. Residence: Rushville.
Ernest W. Moehnert
Ernest W. Moehnert, county judge of Sherman County, Nebraska, was born at Imogene, Iowa, December 10, 1891. August C. Moehnert, his father, who was a farmer, was born at Oldesleben, Germany, April 4, 1840, and died at Madison, Nebraska, September 23, 1917; he came to this country in 1866. Thresa (Huelle) Moehnert, his mother, was born at Erfurt, Germany, September 23, 1849, and came to America in 1861.
Judge Moehnert attended school in Mills County, Iowa, until 1906, and in 1911 was graduated from the high school at Madison, Nebraska. He received the LL. B. degree in 1916 at the University of Nebraska where he was a member of Phi Delta Phi, Phi Delta Theta, and the Iron Sphinx. From 1911 to 1912 he engaged in teaching in Saline County, Nebraska, and since 1916 he has practiced law continuously. He holds membership in the Nebraska Bar Association, the Nebraskana Society, and the American Legion.
During the World War Judge Moehnert served as field artillery lieutenant in the 7th Division of the American Expeditionary Forces. His sports include golf, hunting and fishing, while his hobby is book collecting. He was elected county judge of Sherman County on the Non-partison Ticket and is serving in that capacity.
His marriage to Betty Parker occurred at Julesburg, Colorado, March 18, 1924. Mrs. Moehnert, who was born at Julesburg, February 19, 1901, was born of an old southern family and is the granddaughter of J. H. Parker who served as colonel in the Confederate Army. Their son, Ernest, was born July 28, 1925. Residence: Loup City.
John Henry Moeller
John H. Moeller has been a business man and banker at Leigh, Nebraska, since 1907. He was born at Omaha, June 17, 1886, the son of Otto Friedrich and Anna Margretha (Warn) Moeller. His father, a farmer, was born at Borstel, Germany, February 22, 1834, and died at Leigh, October 6, 1910. His mother was born at Seth, Germany, November 22, 1844, and died at Leigh, May 5, 1929.
Mr. Moeller attended grade school and was a student at the Fremont Business College in 1904. From 1907 to 1916, he conducted a general merchandise store at Leigh; and since 1917, has been active in the First National Bank at Leigh, of which he is still cashier, and director. He is affiliated with the Zion Lutheran Church; is a member of the Republican party; and holds membership in the Nebraskana Society.
On June 29, 1915, he was united in marriage with Alma Elvira Nelson at Leigh. Mrs. Moeller was born at Leigh, January 14, 1892. They have a daughter, Lois Ann, born December 14, 1924. Residence: Leigh.
Herman Moellering
The Reverend Herman Moellering, pastor of the First Lutheran Church of Papillion, was born at Bazile Mills, Nebraska, April 3, 1888. He is the son of Theodore Conrad and Anna (Schust) Moellering. The former was born at Fort Wayne, Indiana, October 15, 1860, and died there February 14, 1927. Theodore Moellering was a clergyman, whose parents came from Germany. Anna Schust was born at Fort Wayne, August 1, 1862, and died at Cincinnati, Ohio, September 12, 1917. She was of German parentage.
Herman Moellering was graduated from the Lutheran parochial school at Hampton, Nebraska, in 1902, studied at the Lutheran Normal School in 1902-03, at Seward, Nebraska, and studied at Fort Wayne College 1903-08, and was graduated from Concordia College in June, 1908; thereafter he attended Concordia Theological Seminary at St. Louis, until 1919.
Except for the time he spent in college, he has been a life resident of Nebraska. On June 2, 1915, he was united in marriage to Anna Albrecht, at Oxford, Nebraska. Mrs. Moellering was born at Oxford, on December 31, 1894, of German parents. There are three children: Theodore, born March 16, 1916; Armin, born April 20, 1919; and Ralph, born February 10, 1923.
Ordained to the ministry at Arapahoe, September 3, 1911, the Reverend Moellering served there until 1921; from 1921-28 he was pastor at Snyder, Nebraska, and since February 12, 1928, he has served at Papillion. While at

tending college at Ft. Wayne, he was first lieutenant of Company D, in the S. A. T. C. at Concordia College; he also assisted in various loan drives during the war. He is secretary of the mission board of the northern Nebraska district, elected at the last district convention in August, 1930. His hobby is music. Residence: Papillion.
Dean McKinley Mohr
Dean M. Mohr was born at Ponca, Nebraska, November 2, 1887. He is the son of John A. and Margaret Jane (McKinley) Mohr. His father was born January 12, 1854; he is a mortician and furniture dealer; his uncle, Silas Garber, was governor of Nebraska, and his ancestry dates back to the Revolutionary War. Margaret Jane Mohr, mother of Dean M. Mohr, was born at Ponca, April 21, 1864. She was a school teacher before her marriage Her parents both came from Ireland.
Graduating from Ponca High School in 1905, Dean attended Bellevue College from which he was graduated in 1910, receiving his B. S. degree. During his school career he took part in both football and baseball activities.
His marriage to Mary Beth Elliott was solemnized April 16, 1912, at Hartington, Nebraska. She was born at Coleridge, July 27, 1889. They have two children: John Elliott, born November 30, 1913; who was graduated from Coleridge High School in 1931; and Dean M. Jr., born April 12, 1918.
Mr. Mohr has been a resident of Nebraska his entire life. He was employed by the Edwards and Bradford Lumber Company for one year, and since 1911, he has been in the undertaking and furniture business.
His religious affiliation is with the Congregational Church of Coleridge. He is past president of the Boosters-Club, is a Mason, a member of The Nebraskana Society and a member of the school board from 1918 to 1929, and 1931. Golfing and swimming are his favorite sports and woodworking is his hobby. Residence. Coleridge.
John Astor Mohr
John Astor Mohr, furniture dealer and mortician, was born at Elkport, Iowa, January 27, 1855, son of Daniel and Mary (Garber) Mohr. His father, a native of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, was born September 3, 1823, son of Conrad Mohr, who came from Germany in 1818. He was a cabinet maker and farmer, and a keeper of bees. His death occurred at Moulton, Iowa, October 25, 1902. Mary Garber, wife of Daniel, was born in Augusta County, Virginia, December 21, 1826, and died at Ponca, January 13, 1902. She was the daughter of Martin Garber, born April 28, 1793, and Magdalene Mohler, born December 23, 1801.
Educated in the country and high schools of Manchester, Iowa, in September, 1881, Mr. Mohr came to Nebraska, and has since been a resident. During much of this time he has been engaged as a furniture dealer and mortician. He has been active in the affairs of his community and served as secretary of the school board 9 years, and served three terms as mayor of Ponca.
His wife, Margaret Jane McKinley, was born at Ponca, April 21, 1865, daughter of John and Margaret (Campbell) McKinley. There are three children, Dean, born November 2, 1887, who is a furniture dealer and mortician at Coleridge; Donald, born October 20, 1891, a salesman and mortician; and Nora M., born August 1, 1896, who is a teacher of Latin at Beatrice. Donald served at Camp Joseph E. Johnson in Florida, and Camp Green North Carolina, in the World War.
Mr. Mohr is a member of the Modern Woodmen of America, the Masons and the Nebraskana Society. Residence: Ponca.
William Jennings Mohr
Born at Culbertson, Nebraska, July 4, 1889, William Jennings Mohr is the son of Peter John and Antonia (Pelikan) Mohr. His father was born at Munich, Bavaria, Germany, in 1837, and came to the United States in early manhood. He was a clergyman, affiliated with the church of Latter Day Saints, whose death occurred at Lamoni, Iowa, January 20, 1920. His wife, born in Czechoslovakia in 1852, died at Orchard, Nebraska, May 22, 1931.
Upon his graduation from the East Denver Grade School, Mr. Mohr attended Culbertson High School, graduating in 1909. Thereafter he was a student at the Nebraska Wesleyan University for six months. From 1909 until 1917, Mr. Mohr was a rural mail carrier at Culbertson. Since 1920 he has been in the Ford garage business and at the present time is president of the Imperial Motor Company, Incorporated, at Imperial, with branches at Wauneta, Palisade, Culbertson and McCook, Nebraska. His marriage to Martha Ruth Cathcart was solemnized at Denver, Colorado, June 20, 1917. Mrs. Mohr was born at Liberty, Nebraska, June 3, 1893, daughter of Joseph C., Cathcart, who was born in Pennsylvania, February 9, 1847, and died April 24, 1909, and Elizabeth (McFarren) Cathcart, who was born in Wells County, Indiana, September 24, 1851, and died November 7, 1920. Mrs. Mohr is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and takes an interested part in its activities. They have two children, William Robert, born November 6, 1918, at Culbertson, Nebraska; and Dorothy Verneal, born September 19, 1923, at Imperial, Nebraska. Residence: Imperial.
James H. Monahan
James H. Monahan, rancher, was born at Percival, Iowa, August 11, 1873, and for the past 44 years has resided in Nebraska.
He is the son of Thomas and Fannie (Abbott) Monahan, the former born in County, Monaghan, Ireland. He died at Percival in September, 1886 after an active life as a farmer. His wife, Fannie, was born at Wabasha, Minnesota, May 6, 1856, and is still living.
Mr. Monahan attended public schools and has since engaged in ranching. He is president of the Bank of Hyannis, director of the Bank of Bingham, and the principal owner of the Monahan Cattle Company. A Republican, he served as county commissioner for nine years and county treasurer for two years of Grant County.
On November 3, 1897, he was married to Cora Anna McCawley at Hyannis. Mrs. Monahan was born at Dorchester, Nebraska, August 4, 1878. She is the daughter of Judge John and Edna (Hagin) McCawley. She attended public school at Hyannis, and is a member of the Eastern Star.
They have one son, Earl, born December 20, 1899, who is married to Marie Coppersmith, and who is manager of a ranch.
Mr. Monahan is a member of the Red Cross, the Community Club, the Lions Club, and the Scottish Rite and Shrine bodies of the Masons. Residence: Hyannis
Daniel Joseph Monen
On February 17, 1898, Daniel J. Monen was born at Charles City, Iowa, the son of Daniel and Julia (Hoye) Monen. His father, who was a farmer, was born of Irish parents at Galena, Jo Davies County, Illinois, February 9, 1860, and died at Charles City, May 12, 1926. His mother was born at Milwaukee, Wisconsin, March 17, 1857, her family having come to America in 1848, from Ireland.
Mr. Monen attended Immaculate Conception Academy at Charles City, where he was graduated in June, 1916.

He was awarded his LL. B. at Creighton University, June 3, 1922; was a student at Columbia College at Dubuque, Iowa, 1917-18. During his stay at Creighton was speaker of the Creighton Model House, and a member of Gamma Eta Gamma.
He is now trust officer of the Omaha National Bank. Admitted to the bar at Omaha, June 3, 1922, he is a member of the Douglas County Bar Association and the State Bar Association. He holds membership in the Omaha Chamber of Commerce, the Nebraskana Society and the American Legion, is affiliated with St. Margaret Mary's Catholic Church, and is a member of the Knights of Columbus. He is a member of Happy Hollow Country Club. His sports are golf and hunting. During the war he was a private in the sixth company, 4th battalion, at Camp Pike, Arkansas.
He was married to Agnes Ethel Monaghan at Osage, Mitchell County, Iowa, June 3, 1924. Mrs. Monen, who was born at Elma, Iowa, January 14, 1901, is of Irish descent. They have three children: Patricia Ann, born April 30, 1925; Daniel Joseph, born September 18, 1927; and Mary Agnes, born October 7, 1930. Reseidence (sic): Omaha.
Henry S. Monke
Henry S. Monke, pioneer resident of Fontanelle, was born in Herford, Westfalen, Germany, April 1, 1869. He is the son of John Henry and Anna Friedericka (Tappe) Monke, both of whom were Germans. John Henry Monke was born in Herford, March 21, 1830, and died at Fontanelle, Nebraska, on December 12, 1916. His wife, Anna, was also born in Herford, on December 8, 1827, and died in Fontanelle, January 29, 1905. They emigrated to America in the fall of 1869, and arrived in Fontanelle in November of that year.
Educated first in public schools, Henry S. Monke afterward attended Fremont Normal College several terms. He has been a resident of the state sixty-two years, and in addition to his farming activities, has found time to take an active interest in the advancement of his community. He is a Republican, and is at the present time serving as chairman of the township central committee. He is a member of the Masons and the Young Men's Christian Association, and since 1908 has served as superintendent of the Salem Lutheran Sunday School. His hobby is floriculture.
Mr. Monke was married to Pauline Louise Ruwe at Fremont, Nebraska, March 10, 1896. Mrs. Monke, who is of German descent, was born on a farm near Fontanelle, on September 29, 1877. They have two children: Anna May, born May 8, 1900, who married Jojakim William Blatter, a druggist, and Luther H. W., born December 1, 1902. He is married to Wilmeth Williams, and is a farmer. Anna May completed her high school education at Brownell Hall in Omaha, and attended her freshman year of college at the University of Nebraska. Her sophomore and junior years were spent at Midland College. Luther Graduated from Midland College with the class of 1927, when he received his B. A. degree. Residence: Fontanelle.
Henry Monsky
Henry Monsky, a resident of Omaha all his life, was born there February 4, 1890, the son of Abraham and Betsy (Periznef) Monsky. His father was born in Russia in 1868 and came to America 48 years ago. His mother was born in Russia in 1862.
Mr. Monsky attended the Omaha public schools and was graduated from the Central High School of Omaha. He received his LL. B. degree at Creighton where he was graduated with "cum laude" honors. He was elected to membership in Delta Theta Phi, law fraternity. Since his admission to the bar in 1912 he has been engaged in the practice of law at Omaha. A Republican, he has held various positions in the county and state organizations and was at one time a member of the Republican State Executive Committee.
He is a member of the Omaha Bar Association, the Nebraska Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and the Omaha City Welfare Board. He served as president of the Omaha Community Chest for two years, is a board member of the Family Welfare Association, and is vice president of the Jewish Community Centre and the Welfare Federation. He was a member of the board of directors of the Chamber of Commerce at one time, is now a member of the Professional Men's Club, and has been prominent as a leader in all civic and welfare affairs. He holds membership in the following: Elks, Masons (Scottish Rite and Shrine), B'nai Brith in which he has served as a member of the Executive Committee, and the Nebraskana Society.
During the World War he èngaged in the United War Work campaign and was chairman of the Four Minute Bureau. He is a member of the Conservative Synagogue. His social clubs are, the Omaha Athletic Club and the Highland Country Club.
Mr. Monsky was married at San Francisco, California, May 2, 1915, to Sadie Lesser. Mrs. Monsky was born at Omaha, June 6, 1891. They have three children, Joy, born February 3, 1916; Hubert, born February 26, 1918; and Barbara, born August 12, 1920. Residence: Omaha.
Olof Monson
Olof Monson, banker and executive, was born at Onnekop, Sweden, December 28, 1859, the son of Mons and Inga Eskelson Monson. His father, a farmer, was born at Horby, Sweden, June 24, 1825, and died there, August 1, 1895. His mother was born at Swenkop, Sweden, April 28, 1825, and died at Onnekop, June 2, 1885.
Mr. Monson was graduated from high school in 1875. He served as president of the Farmers & Merchants Telephone Company from 1914 to 1917, was supervisor in his county from 1916 to 1924, was secretary of the Farmers Union Co-operative Association from 1920 to 1926, and acted as assessor at Anoka, Nebraska, from 1910 to 1916. At this time he is secretary of the Boyd County Farmers & Merchants Insurance Company, and is vice president of the Boyd County State Bank.
He is affiliated with Evangelical Lutheran Trinity Church at Anoka, is a member of the school board, and holds membership in the Nebraskana Society and the Red Cross. Mr. Monson is a member of the Republican party, and has been a resident of this state for the past 42 years. His marriage to Anna Olson was solemnized at Onnekop, Sweden, February 2, 1881. Mrs. Monson was born at Sallerup, Sweden, November 20, 1856, and died at Omaha, Nebraska, July 10, 1930. Their children are: Hannah, born April 1, 1882, who married Alfred L. Nordin; Olof T., born September 22, 1884, who married Magna Gustafson; Andrew N., born December 2, 1886, who married Josie Hammerlun; John E., born April 7, 1889, who married Esther Bengston; George W., born May 30, 1896, who married Hazel Broady; and Lowry D., born August 12, 1899. All the children received college educations.
Hannah is a missionary, Olof, Andrew, and John are farmers, and George and Lowry are bank cashiers. George served in the United States Army in France during the World War for two years, while Lowry was in training camp at the time of the Armistice. Residence: Anoka.
