Harold Benton Muffly
Harold Muffly, lawyer, was born in York County, Nebraska, August 3, 1890, the son of Samuel F. and Mary M. (Sands) Muffly. His father, who was the son of George H. and Sarah E. (McBride) Muffly, was born at Earlville, Illinois, November 20, 1861. His mother, the daughter of Thomas H. B. and Elizabeth C; (Primrose) Sands, was born at Darlington County, Indiana, November 19, 1866.
He attended the country school, Nebraska Wesleyan Academy, graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University in 1914, and received his LL. B. degree at the University of Nebraska, in 1916.
Admitted to the bar in 1916, he engaged in the practice of law at Lincoln. Upon his return from France, he practiced at Pierce, Nebraska, moving to Lincoln in 1926, where he has continued practicing law.
He was united in marriage with Madge Boyce, at Lincoln. Mrs. Muffly was born at Plattsmouth, Nebraska, June 29, 1889, the daughter of Luke L. and Ada S. (Lillard) Boyce. They have two children: Helen Patricia, born November 11, 1923; and Robert Benton, born February 2, 1928.
Mr. Muffly is a member of American Bar Association; the Nebraska State Bar Association; Lancaster County Bar Association; Lincoln Chamber of Commerce; North Star Lodge No. 227 A. F. & A. M.; Lincoln Consistory, Shrine; Eastern Star; Warren Methodist Episcopal Church and Nebraskana Society. He is a Republican, and was a member of the American Expeditionary Forces. Residence: Lincoln.
Conrad William Muhle
Conrad W. Muhle, who has lived in this state all his life, was born at Schuyler, Nebraska, January 26, 1886, the son of Henry and Anna Muhle. His father, who is a farmer, was born in Germany, March 15, 1859, and came to this country in 1865. His mother, who was born at Schuyler, March 1, 1861, is the daughter of one of Nebraska's earliest settlers who came from Germany in the early 1850's. She is the mother of ten children.
Mr. Muhle attended public school, and later took a course in business training and commercial law bookkeeping at the National Business Training School at Sioux City, Iowa. He has been a farm worker, mechanic, manager and field man for various tractor companies, and is now the proprietor of a garage, at Walthill, Nebraska.
He enlisted in the United States Army, April 11, 1917, was promoted to corporal August 7, 1917, and sergeant, September 9, 1917, and May 18, 1918, was made first class sergeant. He saw active service at the battles of Meuse-Argonne, Champaigne, and Baccarat. He is a member of the American Legion, the Lions Club, the Nebraskana Society, and the Red Cross. He is a Mason and Modern Woodmen. His sports include football and baseball, and his hobby is mechanics.
Mr. Muhle was married to Helen Mortensen Frisk at Norfolk, December 28, 1927. Mrs. Muhle, who was a business woman before her marriage, was born at Little Sioux, Iowa, October 22, 1900. They have a son, Glenn Jeppe, born October 27, 1928. Residence: Walthill.
Sarah Theodosia Muir
Sarah T. Muir, noted educator, speaker, and civic leader at Lincoln, Nebraska, was born at Racine, Wisconsin, the daughter of Daniel H. and Emma Annette (Kenaston) Muir. Her father, who was a practicing physician for many years in Lincoln died in January, 1923. Her mother who was born in Columbia City, Indiana, and who died at Lincoln, March 7, 1927, was intensely interested in political, social, musical, and educational affairs at Lincoln, and held membership in the Woman's Club and the Matinee Musicale. She was interested in collecting the works of Nebraska authors. Her father, who was a native of Vermont, was a clergyman in Indiana and Kansas.
Miss Muir attended the Lincoln Public Schols (sic), and received her A. B. and A. M. degrees at the University of Nebraska where she held membership in Chi Delta Phi, Silver Serpent, Theta Sigma Phi, and numerous other organizations. She was a student for one year at Hillsdale College, in Hilisdale, Michigan.
Since 1917 she has been head of the English department at the Lincoln High Schol (sic). She is the author of numerous articles on English, ethics, and polities, published in the English Journal, Educational Review, Minnesota Educational Journal, Nebraska Educational Journal, Intelligent Voter, and the Proceedings of the National Educational Association. A Republican, Miss Muir served as a member of the Nebraska Legislature in 1925. She sat in the first legislative session in which a woman ever served.
She was president of the Lincoln Teachers Association, 1929, was president of the Nebraska State Teachers Association, District Number One, 1930, and chairman of the committee on ethics of teaching of the National Educational Association, 1924-29. She is a member of the National Council of Teachers of English, the Nebraska Writers Guild, the League of Women Voters, Nebraska Women's Educational Club, the Civic Music Association, Wooden Spoon, Matinee Musicale, Mortar Board, the Red Cross and the Nebraskana Society.
She was a member of the committee on college entrance requirements of the North Central Association, 1930-31; member of the English committee on the unit courses and curricula of the North Central Association, 1922; member of the National Education Association committee on English, 1924; member of the national committee of the Council of Teachers of English to revise reading lists, 1922; was president of the Nebraska Women's Educational Club, 1919; was president of the Lincoln Branch of the American Association of University Women, 1910, 1911, 1916; and was president of the Nebraska Chapter of National Council of Teachers of English, 1922-24, and director of this council in 1931. She is a member of the First Presbyterian Church at Lincoln.

Alex Muirhead
Alex Muirhead, lumberman, was born in Grey County, Ontario, Canada, January 11, 1872, son of Gavin and Catherine (McPhail) Muirhead. The father was Saxon and the mother Celtic, both coming from Scotland to Canada. Mr. Muirhead came from Canada to Nebraska in 1894.
He attended rural schools and Owen Sound Collegiate Institute and the Durham Model School at Ontario, Canada.
On June 10, 1903, he was married to Georgia Alice Miller at Hemingford. She was born at Martinton, Illinois, July 15, 1876, the daughter of Alvin M. and Addie (Pearson) Miller. Her father is one of the few surviving veterans of the Civil War. Mrs. Muirhead is a member of the Woman's Club and the Methodist Church. There are two children, Ruth Adeline, born April 5, 1904, who was graduated from Hemingford High School and the University of Nebraska, and later took a post graduate course in the University of California. cultural College and was a teacher prior to her marriage. At the present time Mr. Muirhead is the manager of a lumber company at Hemingford. He is a member of the Methodist Church, the Masons, and the Lions Club. A Republican, he served as county treasurer, 1902-03, and has held various other minor offices. Residence: Hemingford.
Arthur Francis Mullen
A native of Canada, of direct Irish descent, Arthur F. Mullen has been a resident of Nebraska since early childhood. He was born at Kingston, Ontario, May 31, 1873, son of James Mullen, farmer and business man, whose father came from Ireland about 1800. His mother, Emily (Clancy) Mullen, was born near Kingston in 1853. Her parents settled in Canada from Ireland about 1840. She is still living.
Receiving his early education in Canadian public schools, he attended the Fremont and Nebraska Normal Schools, graduating from the latter in 1891. He received his legal education at the University of Michigan, completing his course in June 1900, with the degree of LL. B.
In 1901 he was elected county attorney of Holt county, serving three terms, and until 1907. Always active in the Democratic party, he has been an outstanding member of that organization for many years. After serving as attorney general of Nebraska during 1910-11, he was a member and secretary of the Nebraska Tornado Commission in 1913. Since 1916 he has served as Democratic national committeeman, and he was a member of the executive committee 1918-20.
Mr. Mullen has attained a distinguished position in his profession through participation in many notable cases. Mary Teresa (Dolan) Mullen, his wife, was born in Clinton, Iowa, May 24, 1874, of Irish parentage. Of their marriage, on June 18, 1903, two children were born. The youngest, Margaret, born in 1909, died in 1914. The elder, Arthur J., was born June 17, 1905. He is a lawyer.
Mr. Mullen was admitted to the bar of Michigan in June, 1900 and in Nebraska, January, 1901. He is associated in practice with Andrew M. Morrissey, under the firm name of Mullen & Morrissey. He is a member of the American. Bar Association, The Association of Bar of New York, and the Nebraska State and Douglas County Bar Associations.
A Catholic, he is a member of St. John's Church, and a member of the Knights of Columbus (state deputy 1910-11). He is an Elk. His clubs are Omaha Athletic, Omaha Club, and Happy Hollow Country Club. Residence: Omaha. (Photograph on Page 858).
Joseph Samuel Mullen
Joseph Samuel Mullen, a leading Democrat at Ashland, Nebraska, was born at McPherson, Kansas, June 18, 1884, son of Joseph Lawrence and Mattie Elizabeth (McFarland) Mullen. His father, a farmer and political leader, was born at Milwaukee, Wisconsin, July 27, 1844, of Irish parentage. He died at Canton, Kansas, February 12, 1912. His mother, born in Iowa, of Scotch and Irish ancestry, resides at Ashland.
Mr. Mullen attended high school at Canton, Kansas, received the Ph. G. degree from Fremont College of Pharmacy, and has been a successful druggist at Ashland for the past twenty-one years. He is past president of the Board of Education, is a member and former secretary-treasurer of the Chamber of Commerce, and holds membership in the Nebraska Pharmaceutical Association. Mr. Mullen is a member of the Modern Woodmen of America, the Odd Fellows, the Masons and the Nebraskana Society. His hobby is mechanics.
On August 12, 1908, he was united in marriage to Lola Fern Parker of Ashland. They have three children: Dorothy Fern, born September 8, 1911; Joseph Robert, born June 6, 1916; Richard Keith, born June 6, 1918.
Dorothy married Allyn J. Naviaux and now resides in Kansas City. They have one son, Joseph Flynn Naviaux, born April 22, 1930. Richard and Joseph are students at the Ashland High School. Residence: Ashland.
Mary Tresa Mullen
Mary Tresa Mulien, who is the wife of Arthur F. Mullen, was born in Clinton County, Iowa, May 22, 1874. Her parents, James and Mary (Clark) Dolan, were natives of Ireland. Her father was born May 20, 1824, and came to America in early youth. He was a farmer by occupation, and died in Bryant County, Iowa, October 30, 1880. Her mother was born September 30, 1834, and died in Clinton County May 31, 1906.
Mrs. Mullen was educated first in the country schools and St. Mary's parochial school at Clinton, Iowa. She was graduated from Mt. St. Clair College in 1904. Her marriage to Arthur F. Mullen took place at Clinton, Iowa, June 17, 1903. Two children were born to them, Arthur, born June 18, 1905, who is a lawyer, and Margaret, born July 20, 1909, who died July 28, 1914.
Before her marriage Mrs. Mullen was a teacher in the public schools of Iowa and Colorado. During the World War she was active in Red Cross and other civilian work. She is a Catholic, and member of Holy Cross Church. She is active in Welfare and social work, especially in the Red Cross Community Chest and Girl Scouts, she is a member of the Parent-Teachers' Association, the National Council of Catholic Women, and the Catholic Daughters of America, of which she is past president. Her sport is golf, and her clubs are the Omaha Club and Happy Hollow County Club. Residence: Omaha.
Joseph H. Mullin
One of Nebraska's pioneer lawyers, Joseph H. Mullin has been a resident of this state for the past 53 years.
He was born in Des Moines County, Iowa, February 24, 1851, and since 1876 has been actively engaged in the practice of law at Grand Island, Nebraska. His father, Bernard Mullin, a merchant, was born in Adams County, Ohio, in 1824, and died at Iowa City, Iowa, in July, 1892. His mother, Mary (Brenan) Mullin, was born at Mullingar, Ireland, in 1827, and died at, Iowa City, Iowa, July 31, 1900.
Mr. Mullin received the LL. B. degree at the University of Iowa in 1876, where he was a member of the Zetagathian Literary Society. He is affiliated with the St. Mary's Catholic Church, has held the offices of chancellor and grand knight of the Knights of Columbus, and was formerly district deputy of the organization.
On October 15, 1884, he married Alice E. Hooper, daughter of Edward and Sarah (Parcell) Hooper, at Grand Island. Mrs. Mullin, whose ancestry is English, was born at Central City, Nebraska, January 28, 1866

Their children are: Bernard, born September 26, 1885, who married Helen Furniss; Cecil W., born September 1, 1887; Alice, born May 13, 1893; Margaret, born May 20, 1895; Dorothy, born February 7, 1897, who married Art Ernstmeyer; George, born April 1, 1899, who married Wilma Coats; and Isabel, born July 31, 1907.
Mr. Mullin, who is a Democrat, was county judge of Hall County from 1900 to 1929. His hobby is reading. Residence: Grand Island.
Richard Francis Mullin
Richard F. Mullin, prominent physician of Snyder, Nebraska, has lived in this state practically all his life and for many years has been active in community affairs at Snyder. He was born at Omaha, November 19, 1888, the son of Richard and Bridget (Cannon) Mullin. His father was born at Woodford, County Galway, Ireland, and was a clerk for the Union Pacific Railroad at Omaha, where he died November 30, 1912. His mother was born at Woodford.
Dr. Mullin attended the parochial and public schools of Omaha, and was graduated from the high school of Creighton University there. He holds the following degrees: A. B., Creighton University, 1911; A. M., 1912; M. D., 1918. He was especially active in college where he held the position of class treasurer, 1917-18; treasurer of the Mixers Club, 1916; and president of the Mixers club, 1917. He held membership in Phi Beta Pi, medical fraternity, and was treasurer of Archon for two terms.
His marriage to Margaret Anne Ortman was solemnized at Omaha, March 26, 1919. Mrs. Mullin, who is the daughter of C. W. Ortman of Omaha, was born at Omaha, March 6, 1895. They have three children: Charline, born April 24, 1921; Genevieve, born December 2, 1922; and Marilyn, born August 29, 1924.
Dr. Mullin served as lieutenant of the medical corps in the United States Naval Hospital during the World War, and was a medical officer at the United States Naval Air Station at Key West. He is a member of the American Legion. His professional and civic undertakings include membership in the Dodge County Medical Society; Snyder Chamber of Commerce; the Red Cross; the D. L. Club at Snyder; and the Nebraskana Society. He is affiliated with St. Leo's Catholic Church and is a member of the Knights of Columbus. He is a Democrat.
Dr. Mullin's chief interest is working for the advancement of his community and state. His sports include golf, fishing and hunting. Residence: Snyder.
Tom Peter Mullins
Tom Peter Mullins, dental surgeon, was born at Omaha, Nebraska, January 10, 1891, son of Charles Love and Kate Belle (Coon) Mullins.
Charles Love Mullins is a physician, who served as captain in the medical corps with the 1st Nebraska regiment of the Nebraska National Guard in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War. He is past president of the Nebraska State Medical Society.
Tom Peter Mullins attended public school at Broken Bow, and was graduated from Grand Island Academy in 1908. He took his pre-medical work at the Nebraska State University, and received his degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery from Creighton Dental College in 1917. He is a member of Acacia, and Xi Psi Phi, and at Grand Island College was a letterman in track and football each two years.
Upon his graduation from Creighton Dental College, in June, 1917, Dr. Mullins practiced at Valparaiso, Nebraska, until January, 1920. He then removed to Chappell, where he remained until July, 1921, and from that time until 1929, practiced at Merna. Since 1929, he has been in practice at Chadron. Of his marriage on June 12, 1914, to Betty Ray, one son, Charles Love, IV, was born on October 2, 1916.
He was married to Hazel Marie Kimes at Broken Bow, on November 21, 1922. Mrs. Mullins was born at Duning (sic), Nebraska, December 6, 1900. She is a member of the Business and Professional Woman's Club and the Epsilon Sigma Alpha.
Among Dr. Mullins professional organizations are, the American Dental Association, the Nebraska State Dental Society, the 8th Nebraska District Dental Society, and the Chadron Dental Study Club. He is a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Kiwanis Club, and is a Master Mason. Active in Boy Scout work, he is registered scouter in the covered wagon area of the Boy Scouts of America, chairman of the district committee of the Sioux district of the same, and a member of the town committee of Chadron in the same district. His club is the Chadron Country Club. He is affiliated with Grace Episcopal Church. He enjoys golf, while his hobby is boys' work. Residence: Chadron.
Wendell E. Mumby
Wendell E. Mumby, lawyer, was born at Swanton, Nebraska, March 16, 1906, son of George H. and Emma A. (Truka) Mumby. The father was born at Swanton, Nebraska, January 16, 1881, and is a merchant of English ancestry. His wife, Emma, was born at Wilber, February 23, 1882, and is an active member of the Eastern Star. Her ancestry is Bohemian.
Mr. Mumby first attended school at Crab Orchard, Nebraska, and was graduated from public school at Sterling. He attended Sterling High School, graduating in 1922, and in 1928, received the Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Nebraska, where he is a member of Phi Alpha and Pi Kappa Phi.
Since 1928, he has been in the general practice of law at Harrison, and at the present time, is a member of the firm of Schnurr and Mumby. A Republican, he was appointed deputy county attorney of Sioux County, in 1928, and elected county attorney in 1930.
On June 3, 1928, he was married to Edna Ruth Dorsh at Sterling. She was born at Cook, Nebraska, September 15, 1905, of German ancestry. They have one son, Keith, born May 27, 1931.
Mr. Mumby is affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church at Harrison, is a member of the Nebraska State Bar Association, the Lions Club (secretary 1930-1931), Odd Fellows. He is a member of the Harrison Golf Club, Red Cross (county chairman, 1930-1931), and enjoys golf and fishing. His hobby is reading. Residence: Harrison.
Mary Munchhoff
Mary Munchhoff was born at Mount Vernon, Indiana, daughter of Herman Richard and Anna Margaret (Schenk) Munchhoff. Herman Munchhoff was born at Morganfield, Kentucky, August 3, 1843, and was a business man of early American ancestry. He died at Omaha, April 29, 1919. His wife, Anna Margaret, was both at St. Phillips, Indiana, January 5, 1847. She died at Omaha, in October, 1916.
Mary Munchhoff was graduated from a private school in Indiana, and studied at Berlin, under Frau Professor Selma Niklass-Kempner. She continued her studies with Mme. Mathilde Marchesi at Paris, for two years and also with the famous R. Von Zur Mehlen. Later she made numerous concert tours through Germany, Russia, Great Britain, Austria, Denmark, Belgium, and Holland. She sang many times under celebrated conductors, Nikisch, Safonoff, Mengelberg, Weingartner, Steinbach, Hausegger, Panger, Hertz, Victor Herbert and others.
