George LeRoy Pinney

George LeRoy Pinney, leading physician and diagnostician, was born at Michigan City, Indiana, August 5, 1894, son of Edward and Florence Bell (Metcalf) Pinney. His father was born at Wanatah, Indiana, February 3, 1861, and has been prominent in the political and commercial life of Bernalillo County and Albuquerque, New Mexico, for many years, and has among other things, served as treasurer of Bernalillo County. He is the son of Captain Horace Pinney of England. Florence Bell Metcalf, wife of Edward Pinney, was born at Wanatah, Indiana, October 21, 1861, of German extraction. She is active in club work and is a member of the Order of Eastern Star.

Educated in the public schools of Albuquerque, Dr. Pinney received his Bachelor of Science degree, and his Doctor of Medicine degree from Northwestern University. He was business manager of the Northwestern annual, a letterman in track at the University of New Mexico, and is a member of Pi Kappa Alpha, Phi Beta Pi and Theta Nu Epsilon.

On October 10, 1923, Dr. Pinney was united in marriage to Sarah Elizabeth Boone at Warren, Illinois. Mrs. Pinney, who is a graduate of the National Kindergarten College of Chicago, was born at Warren, January 9, 1896, of Scotch and Irish descent. They have three children: George LeRoy, Jr., born November 3, 1925; Gloria Ann, born March 22, 1928, and Sally Jane, born June 18, 1930.

Mrs. Pinney is a member of the Woman's Club, the Country Club, Eastern Star and Milk Fund Club. She is interested particularly in supplying proper food for the under-nourished child. After completing her education she taught two years in the public school of Gary, Indiana, as bead of the kindergarten department.

Dr. Pinney is particularly interested in preventive medicine and was the 1930 chairman of the Adams County Fair Health Clinic, which examined about 200 babies and the same number of adults. Results in this field of research have been encouraging and Dr. Pinney has continued his study with the children of the public schools and students of Hastings College. He was chairman of the health clinic at the state fair for one day in 1931.

Dr. Pinney specializes in diagnosis, and at the present time is public school physician, physician to Hastings College, and consulting internist to Ingleside State Hospital, and chairman of medical staff of Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital, and is the author of Blood Transfusion; Malnutrition and Cardiac Hypertrophy. He is preparing an article for the Nebraska Dental Journal entitled The Relationship Between the Interest and the Dentist. During his ten years of active practice he has risen high in his profession and has filled various offices in medical organizations. He is a former president of the Adams County Medical Society, has served as delegate to the convention of the Nebraska State Medical Society, is a fellow of the American College of Physicians, is a fellow of American Public Health Association and is a member of the District Medical Society.

He is the representative of internal medicine in the Rotary Club and chairman of the social committee, chairman of the playground committee of the Chamber of Commerce, a 32nd degree Mason and member of the Divan of the Shrine. He holds membership in the Elks, the Young Men's Christian Association, the American Legion, and the Knights of Pythias. His religious affiliation is with the Presbyterian Church.

Dr. Pinney is interested in landscaping and enjoys golf and hunting. He is a Republican, and active in politics, His social clubs are the Northwestern University and the Hastings Country Clubs. Residence: Hastings.


Alva Sherman Pinto

Alva Sherman Pinto, physician, was born at Chillicothe, Ohio, May 29, 1872, son of Miles Augustus and Margaret A. (Reid) Pinto.

The father was born in Chillicothe, on March 4, 1826, where he spent his entire life. The mother was born in Chillicothe, August 12, 1835, and died there on December 7, 1879.

Dr. Pinto attended public school and received his medical degree from Creighton University. He was married to Mabel Belinda Spalding at Omaha, December 10, 1903. She was born at Elvaston, Illinois, August 28, 1877. There are two children, Sherman Spalding, and Harvey Elmore.

Dr. Pinto is a Republican, has been health commissioner of Omaha since 1921. He is a director of the Farmers and Merchants Bank, and the H. J. Hughes Company. During the late war he served on the exemption board. He is a member of the First Methodist Church, is a Spanish War Veteran, belongs to the American Legion, and the American, Douglas County, and Nebraska State Medical Association. His club is the Athletic Club. Residence: Omaha.


Emil Louis Pischel

Emil Louis Pischel, a resident of Nebraska for 61 years, was born in Bohemia, the son of Anton and Maria (Misliveacre) Pischel. His father, who was a merchant tailor, was born in Bohemia and died at Santa Rosa, California, March 2, 1900. His mother was born at Kutna Hora, Bohemia and died on a farm near Verdel, Nebraska, January 20, 1918.

Mr. Pischel was the owner and manager of a general merchandise store for several years, and was a successful farmer near Verdel for many years where he is now retired. He served as postmaster at Verdell from 1884 to 1927, was county supervisor, and chairman of the county board.

He married Theresa Dirz at Niobrara, Nebraska, October 15, 1884. Mrs. Pischel was born in Bohemia in 1865 and died near Verdel, May 6, 1929. They have six children: Anton, born February 1, 1886, who married Myrtle Addington; Otto, born July 7, 1888, who married Tillie Barta; Walter, born February 10, 1890, who married Grace Pischel; Arthur J., born June, 1902, who married Mary Pischel; Frank E., born September 1, 1904; and William, born January 2, 1900. Anton is bookkeeper for the Patterson Hardware Company at Fort Morgan Colorado. Otto, Walter, and Arthur are farmers. Residence: Verdel.


William Henry Pitzer

William H. Pitzer was born at Arizona, Nebraska, February 3, 1869, the son of Fletcher Bradley and Mary (Stringfield) Pitzer. His father, who was born in Kentucky, March 3, 1840, and died at Hillsdale, Mills County, Iowa, June 4, 1880, was a Methodist Episcopal territorial minister and circuit rider in Nebraska from 1864 to 1869. His family originally came from Virginia to Kentucky, and moved to Iowa in 1853.

His mother, who was born in Edmondson County, Kentucky, December 22, 1842, moved with her parents to Missouri, in 1843, and in 1852 moved to Iowa. She died at Nebraska City, November 27, 1920.

Mr. Pitzer attended the country and village schools of Iowa and Kansas, and was admitted to the practice of law in Iowa and Nebraska, in 1899. Since that time he has been engaged in the practice of his profession in Nebraska City. Since 1901 he has been secretary and chief executive officer of the Nebraska City Building and Loan Association. He is president of the Otoe County National Bank, and of the Farmers' Elevator Company at Nebraska City. He was formerly a member of the law firm Pitzer & Hayward, and thereafter was successively associated with Edwin Zimmerer, Earl Cline, V. E. Tyler, and L. E. Peterson.

the political and educational affairs of the state for many years. From 1919 to 1920, he was a member of the Nebraska Constitutional Convention, representing Cass and Otoe Counties; was a member of the Board of Education of the State Normal Schools, 1929-1930; and was elected state senator from the Second Senatorial District, composed of Cass, O toe, and Sarpy Counties, for the term 1931-32.

His marriage to Ora Fern Miller was solemnized at Hillsdale, Mills County, Iowa, November 4, 1904. Mrs. Pitzer's father was a Tennesseean, and her mother was a Carolinian. She was born at Hillsdale, December 2, 1880. There are two children: Margaret Lawrence, born May 17, 1907; and John Marshall, born April 15, 1909, who received his A. B. degree at the University of Nebraska, and is now attending the law school there.

During the World War, Mr. Pitzer was in the Nebraska National Guard service, and was chairman of the omnibus war work in Otoe County. He is a member of the Nebraska State Bar Association and the American Bar Association, He is affiliated with the State Historical Society and the Nebraskana Society. His hobby is farming. Joseph Daniel Pivonka

For more than fifty-two years Joseph Daniel Pivonka has been a leading citizen of Swanton, Nebraska. He was born at Manitowoc, Wisconsin, June 29, 1869, son of Jacob and Helen Pivonka. His parents were natives of Czechoslovakia, the former born in 1840, and the latter in 1838. Jacob Pivonka died at Wilber, on November 10, 1921; His wife died there in 1888. At the age of ten years Joseph Pivonka came to Nebraska with his parents.

He was married to Mary Houser, at Wilber, January 10, 1893. Mrs. Pivonko was born in Czechoslovakia, June 19, 1870. There are two children: Adolph F., born January 11, 1894, who married Olga Fikar, and who is a banker. The daughter, Erma A., was born January 10, 1904, and is married to William Fitl.

Until 1919, Mr. Pivonka farmed in Saline County, and since that time he has been engaged in the banking business. He is at the present time president of the Bank of Swanton. In politics he is affiliated with the Democratic party. He is a member of the Swanton Commercial Club, thee Z. C. B. J. and The Nebraskana Society. Residence: Swanton.


Joseph Placek

Joseph Placek, retired farmer of Swanton, Nebraska, was born at Cleveland, Ohio, October 20, 1868, the son pf John and Katherine (Sedivy) Placek. His father, who was a farmer, was born at Podebrady, Czechoslovakia, May 27, 1837, and died at Wilber, Nebraska, March 15, 1915; he came to America, May 27, 1867. His mother was born at Podebrady, November 23, 1839, and died at Wilber, April 20, 1913. She was active in her community and church affairs.

Mr. Placek, who has lived in Nebraska for the past 54 years, attended school at Cleveland, and in Saline County. He is a member of the Woodmen of the World and the Bohemian fraternal organization, Z. C. B. J. His religious affiliation is with the Catholic Church. Politically, he is a Democrat.

On February 3, 1891, he was united in marriage with Mary Emily Petrasek, at Wilber. Mrs. Placek was born at Wilber, February 1, 1871. Nine children were born to this union, all of whom are living: Edward, born March 23, 1892, who married Emma Bartos; Ladislav, born March 24, 1894, who maried (sic) Mary Slepicka; Bessie, born March 24, 1894, who married Frank Sasek; John, born February 4, 1896, who married Mary Hana; William, born June 22, 1898, who married Lydia Houser; Joe, born August 5, 1904; Jerry, born August 5, 1904, who married Emma Vidlec; Rose, born September 7, 1906, who married Edward Jiskra; and Blanche, born January 25, 1911, who is a school teacher. Residence: Swanton.


Alden Charles Plantz

Alden Charles Plantz, prominent lawyer of Sheridan County, was born in Dodge County, Nebraska, February 4, 1882, son of Franklin Christian and Harriet Elizabeth (Pettegrew) Plantz. The father was born in Fulton County, New York, November 5, 1840, and served in Company C, 51st Infantry of New York, with the rank of corporal. He died at Hay Springs, Nebraska, February 5, 1909. His grandfather, who was born in Germany, came to America as an infant. Harriet Elizabeth Pettegrew was born near Marysville, Iowa, September 21, 1853, and in her younger days taught in the public school. Her ancestry was mixed; she was a descendant of John Alden and Priscilla Mullins.

In 1897 Mr. Plantz was graduated from Hay Springs High School at the age of 15, and three years later became assistant cashier of the Northwestern State Bank of Hay Springs. He continued in this capacity until 1903. From 1903 until 1910 Mr. Plantz was vice president, and later secretary and treasurer of the Maverick Loan and Trust Company of Rushville. Since 1910 he has been engaged in the practice of law there. At the present time he is attorney for the Stockmen's National Bank, the First National Bank of Hay Springs, and others. He is a Republican, and for six years was county attorney of Sheridan County. Among other offices which he has held are, justice of the peace, member of the school board, village trustee, and chairman of the Republican County Central Committee which he held for several years.

On January 1, 1908, he was married to Helen Watt at Rushville. Mrs. Plantz was born at Xenia, Ohio, May 16, 1885, and before her marriage was a teacher. Mr. and Mrs. Plantz are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Rushville.

During the late war Mr. Plantz was a member of the Legal Advisory Board and was government appeal agent, first president of the Sheridan County Red Cross, and secretary of the Sheridan County Council of Defense. A Mason, a member of the Eastern Star and the Royal Highlanders, he is also a member of the Woodmen of the World, the Nebraskana Society, and the Rushville Chamber of Commerce, and the American, Nebraska State and Sheridan County bar associations. At the present time he is a member of the Library Board also. His favorite sport is golf, and he holds membership in the Rushville Golf Club. Residence: Rushville. (Photograph on Page 953).


C. E. Plass

Born at Onedia, New York, September 15, 1857, C. E. Plass is the son of Edward and Margaret (Weeks) Plass. His father, who was a shoemaker, was born at Rome, New York, and died in Onedia County, New York, in 1862. His mother was born at Rome in 1860.

Mr. Plass was engaged in the bakery and grocery business for a number of years, and recently has bought and sold land in Madison County, Nebraska. He is a director of the First National Bank of Madison, has served as mayor of that city for two terms, and has been a member of the City Council for two terms. His sports include football and baseball.

On March 19, 1887, he was married to Mary Emma Reagan at Washington, Kansas. Mrs. Plass, whose ancestry is Pennsylvania Dutch, was born at Reading, Pennsylvania, November 23, 1863. They have seven children: C. E., Jr., born January 1, 1900; Hallie, born January 12, 1888; Mana L., born March 10, 1891, who married F. C. Jenkins; Clara I., born February 14, 1893, who married H. B. Brannian; Sadie, born July 13, 1896,

George W. Platner

A veteran lumberman of Nebraska, George W. Platner, has been prominent in Omaha for the past 42 years. He was born at Glidden, Iowa, October 31, 1871, the son of William H. and Anna M. (Pierce) Platner. His father, who was born at Tipton, Iowa, March 4, 1838, and died at Omaha, was a lawyer. He was first lieutenant of the 13th Iowa Infantry until the Battle of Atlanta, when he was wounded. His ancestry was German and he claimed to be the third white child born in Iowa.

His mother who was born at Newton, Iowa, in 1853, and reared six children, all of whom are living, died at Omaha. Her ancestry was English.

Mr. Platner was graduated from high school at Glidden, Iowa, June, 1886, and was a student at Western Normal College at Shenandoah, Iowa, in 1887. He has been in business for himself for 37 years, and now owns and operates four lumber yards at Omaha.

He married Margaret Alice Bennett, who was born at Omaha, October 27, 1874; her ancestry is English on the maternal side and Irish through the paternal line. They have two children: Josephine, born July 3, 1903, who married J. Leslie Shear; and John, born January 12, 1906. Josephine was awarded a degree at Columbia University and is an archeologist. John is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and holds a degree in mechanical engineering awarded at Princeton.

Mr. Platner was a private in the Home Guards during the World War, and entered almost every war activity during 1918. A member of the Chamber of Commerce, he was formerly a member of the Omaha Kiwanis Club. He is a member of the First Methodist Church of Omaha, and is a member of the board of trustees of the church. He holds membership in the Omaha Athletic Club and Happy Hollow Club. He is a 33rd degree Scottish Rite Mason. Politically, Mr. Platner is a Republican. Residence: Omaha.


Wilbur Harvey Plourd

Wilbur Harvey Plourd, educator and newspaper man, was born at Odell, Nebraska, September 18, 1893, the son of William Henry and Elizabeth (Hohman) Plourd. His father, who was born in Iowa, is the owner and manager of a theatre; his ancestry is French. Elizabeth (Hohman) Plourd was born in Germany.

Mr. Plourd attended the public schools of Indianola where he was graduated in 1911. He received the B. S. and B. P. degrees at Fremont College in 1916. He has held the following positions in the educational world: principal, Kimball, Nebraska, 1914-16; superintendent, Utica, Nebraska, 1916-17; superintendent, Loup City, Nebraska, 1919-20; superintendent, Fullerton, Nebraska, 1920-24. In 1924 he purchased the News-Journal at Fullerton, and in 1928 bought the Fullerton Post, consolidating the two newspapers to form the Nance County Journal of which he is now owner and publisher.

He is president of the board of education at Fullerton, was secretary of the Lions Club in 1927, and served as president of the latter organization in 1928. He was chairman of the Home Service Department of the Nance County Red Cross, 1931, assisted with the organization of the Nance County Homecoming Association, and is a member of the Nebraska Press Association. He is affiliated with the Methodist Church and holds membership in the Masons, Knights of Pythias, and Modern Woodmen of America. His social club is the Fullerton Golf Association.

Mr. Plourd served as first class sergeant, 310th Aero Squadron, overseas during the World War, and was commander of the Fred Philbrick Post of the American Legion in 1929. He is the author of Paragon Plan System, for use in the public schools.

His marriage to Hazelle Alta Mangan occurred at Kimball, Nebraska, August 16, 1916. Mrs. Plourd, who was a teacher until 1923, was born at Elkton, South Dakota, September 24, 1893. Her maternal grandfather was a descendant of Patrick Henry. They have a son, Marvin, born January 15, 1927. Residence: Fullerton


Florando Ernst Poellot

Florando E. Poellot was born at West Point, Nebraska, May 24, 1884. After graduating from high school at West Point, he attended the Pharmacy College of Creighton, at Omaha, Nebraska, where he received his graduate pharmacist's degree.

Peter Poellot, father of Floranda, was born at Aldorf, Germany, July 4, 1852, and came to this country in 1877. He is now a retired newspaper man. Ida (Krouse) Poellot, his wife, was born in Canada, August 16, 1862, and died at West Point, Nebraska.

On December 28, 1908, Florando E. Poellot was united in marriage to Blanche Scott, at West Point. She is interested in church and club work. They have a daughter, Doris Marie, born June 16, 1918.

Mr. Poellot has been a resident of Nebraska his entire life, and has been a druggist in Coleridge, for twenty-four years. He was mayor from 1922 to 1924. He is affiliated with the Congregational Church of Coleridge, and is a member and president of the Booster Club, and a member of The Nebraskana Society. His hobby is electrical work. Residence: Coleridge.


Ernest Mark Pollard

Born at Nehawka, Nebraska, April 15, 1869, Ernest M. Pollard has been active in the life of his community and state for many years. He is the son of Isaac and Viola (Welch) Pollard. Isaac Pollard was born at Plymouth, Vermont, June 30, 1830, a descendant of English settlers in America in 1690. An early settler in the middle west, he ran the original survey of Cass County for the government. He was a farmer, and served as clerk of Cass County and government surveyor. He died at Nehawka in November, 1916, after a useful and constructive life.

Viola Welch Pollard was born in New York State in August, 1838, of English parentage, and died at Nehawka, in July, 1914. Ernest M. Pollard attended country district school at Nehawka. Entering the first preparatory department of the University of Nebraska, he received his B. A. from that institution in 1893. While at the university he was president of his class, and president of the Palladian Society 1892-93, and senior captain of the University Cadet Battalion.

In 1896 he was united in marriage with Maude E. Rose of Millbrook, Pennsylvania. Mrs. Pollard died at Nehawka, on November 11, 1902. His second marriage was to Gertrude Waterman of Omaha, on July 27, 1905. To this marriage four children were born: Ernest Isaac, born November 11, 1906, married Helen Stahl, living at Irwin, Pennsylvania; Frank W., born October 11, 1909, married Helen Gansemer; Mary Caroline born November 30, 1911, and Halleck William, born January 8, 1914. Ernest is a graduate in electrical engineering from the University of Nebraska, and is now in the designing department of the Westinghouse Company.

A Republican, Mr. Pollard served in the state legislature from 1897-99, in 1905-1909 was a member of the United States Congress from 1st Congressional District of Nebraska, was a member of the Constitutional Convention of 1920, and was secretary of labor and welfare under Governor Weaver. From 1894, until 1927, he was manager of the Pollard Fruit Farm. From 1927-29, he was president of the Farmers Union State Exchange.
