also assistant trust officer of the Continental National Bank, member of the board of directors of the Midwest Life Insurance Company, the Lincoln Joint Stock Land Bank, the Fremont Joint Stock Land Bank, the Bailey Sanitarium, and the State Securities Co., of which last he is chairman of the board. He is also president of the Homestead Bond and Mortgage Company and the American Savings and Loan Association.

During his residence in Nebraska Mr. Selleck has been active in politics and has held various offices. He was elected state senator in 1911 and was unsuccessful candidate for nomination for Congress in 1912 and again in 1924. In 1920 he was a member of the Constitutional Convention and served as state delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1920.

Mr. Selleck has been active in civic affairs for many years, and among other things served as first secretary of the charity organization now known as the Social Welfare Society. He was president of this society in 1900. One of the early members of the Chamber of Commerce, formerly the Commercial Club, he was president of that organization during 1910-11. From 1900 to 1909 he was a member of the Lincoln School board, serving as president of the board in 1906. He is also a member of the board of trustees of Doane College, and has served as president of the board. Since 1904 he has been a member of the Young Men's Christian Association, and during 1917-18 was president of its board. He was a four minute speaker during the World War.

Mr. Selleck's religious affiliation is with the First Plymouth Congregational Church of Lincoln. He is a Mason and a member of the Woodmen of the World, the Nebraska State Historical Society and the Nebraskana Society. His clubs are the University and the Candle Light Clubs. Residence: Lincoln.


John Peter Senning

John Peter Senning, leading educator of Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska, was born at Rotenburg, Hesse, Germany, August 4, 1883. His father, Wilehim (sic) Senning, was of German descent.

Dr. Senning was awarded the A. B. degree at Union College, Le Mars, Iowa, 1908, where he was president of the senior class and class orator, and the Ph. D. degrees at the University of Illinois, 1924. He was a student at the University of Minnesota, University of Chicago, and Yale University, at various times. He is a member of Phi Alpha Delta.

He has held the following positions: secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, Middletown, Connecticut, 1913-14; an instructor in history and political science at Wesleyan University, Middletown, Connecticut, 1912-14; instructor in history and political science at Illinois College, 1910-11; the same position at the University of Nebraska, where he acted as instructor in American history, 1916. Since 1917 he has been instuctor (sic) in political science. He served as a member of the Preliminary Survey Commission for the Constitutional Convention of Nebraska, 1919-20, and was a member of the executive council for the American Political Science Association. He is at present professor of political science and chairman of the department at the University of Nebraska.

Dr. Senning is the author of Party Disintegration in Illinois, 1850-60 (published in the Illinois State Historical Journal, 1912); Administrative Reorganization in Nebraska (published in the American Political Science ReView, 1919); Nebraska Constitutional Convention (published in the National Municipal Review, 1920), the Evaluation of Administrative Reorganization in Nebraska (published in the National Municipal Review, 1923; and Status of Home Rule in Nebraska (1932).

He is a member of the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce, the American Political Science Association, and the Nebraskana Society. He is a Mason, and is a member of the Republican party. Dr. Senning's social club is the Lincoln University Club.

On June 13, 1913, he was united in marriage with Elizabeth Anna Stone at Joliet, Will County, Illinois. Mrs. Senning was born at Joliet, December 2, 1884; her English ancestors were among the first settlers in Connecticut in 1639. She is connected with the research department of the Nebraska Legislative Reference Bureau, and active in the League of Women Voters. Residence: Lincoln.


Ansel R. Settell

For several years Ansel R. Settell has been engaged in the practice of dentistry at Bloomfield, Nebraska. He was born at Ellsworth, Kansas, January 26, 1885, the son of Robert Philip and Helen (Valeau) Settell, the former a farmer who was born at Toronto, Canada, December 16, 1837, and died at Thurman, Iowa, February 19, 1925. His mother was born in Michigan in 1848 and died at Thurman, August 1, 1927.

Dr. Settell was graduated from the high school at Thurman in 1903, and in 1906 received the degree D. D. S. at the University of Iowa. He practiced dentistry at Crofton, Nebraska for a year and since then has been successful at Bloomfield. He is a member of the Methodist Church and holds membership in the Nebraskana Society.

On January 23, 1908, he married Bertha Mae Leigh at Sioux City, Iowa. Mrs. Settell was born at Chilicothe, Illinois, January 16, 1889. Their children are: Philip L., born April 29, 1909; Reynolds G., born December 16, 1912; Robert Louis, born July 8, 1915; and Marjorie Mae, born November 7, 1925. Residence: Bloomfield.


George Newton Seymour

One of Nebraska's outstanding bankers and executives, George Newton Seymour, now retired, was born at Gloversville, New York, May 7, 1865. His father, James Harvey Seymour, was born in New York State, February 20, 1822, and died at Meriden, Connecticut, July 5, 1896. A practicing dentist at Gloversville or twenty-five years, he was later in life in the lumber business at Meriden. He was descended from Richard Seymour who settled in Hartford, Connecticut, coming from England in 1636. His mother, Mary Leonard North, was born in Berlin, Connecticut, January 2, 1832, and died at Los Angeles October 8, 1911. She was a teacher in her youth, and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

George Newton Seymour attended Hartford public schools and was graduated from high school in the class of 1884. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Amherst in 1888, where he was active in dramatics, debate and public speaking, was a member of Chi Phi and of the football team.

On May 18, 1892, Mr. Seymour was united in marriage to Jessie Louise Butler at Meriden. To them were born two children, Alma Brooks, born March 6, 1893, who married Frank Latenser of Omaha, and Leonard North, born February 4, 1900, who married Vesta Beavers. Alma was graduated from Brownell Hall at Omaha, Bradford Academy at Bradford, Massachusetts, and Vassar College. Thereafter she took post-graduate work at Boston.

Mr. Seymour, who recently retired, has served as president of the Elgin State Bank, the Atlas Bank of Neligh and others, as well as president of the Northwestern Nebraska Bankers Association, and Nebraska Bankers Association. He is president of the Cratty Lumber and Grain Company of Elgin and Haffman-Seymour, Incorporated.

Mr. Seymour's hobbies are landscaping, architecture and art, and he is the author of the landscape plan of the University of Nebraska. For six years he was a member of the board of regents of the university, and for twenty-

four years he served on the Elgin School Board. During the World War he was chairman of the North Nebraska Liberty loan committee and a member of the Antelope County Council of Defense. He is a Republican. His social clubs include the University Club at Lincoln, the Athletic Club of Omaha and Ak-Sar-Ben. He is a Mason, and was recently elected to life membership in the Nebraskana Society. Residence: Elgin.


Victor Seymour

For the past 57 years Victor Seymour has lived in Nebraska, and since 1892, has been prominent in the practice of law. He was born at Macomb, Illinois, May 28, 1870, the son of Henry and Weltha Victoria (Bell) Seymour. His father, who was born at Newark, Illinois, March 18, 1837, and died at York, Nebraska, February 2, 1893, was a grain and agricultural implement dealer. He enlisted in Company A, 14th Illinois Cavalry, in 1862, and was mustered out in 1865, with the rank of lieutenant. His family came from England, in the 17th century.

His mother, Weltha (Bell) Seymour, was born at Westfield, New York, September 7, 1838, and died at York, February 2, 1898. Her great great grandmother came to New England from Scotland, before the French and Indian War; her grandmother's great uncles were officers in the War, of 1812; other ancestors came from England and Wales.

Mr. Seymour was graduated from high school at York, in May, 1889, and in 1892, received the LL. B. degree from the University of Nebraska. He served as stenographer for Sawyer & Snell, attorneys, for five years; was court reporter for Judge Albert J. Cornish, for 9 years; deputy clerk of the Supreme Court of Nebraska; campaign manager for John L. Kennedy of Omaha, in his campaign for United States senator; and was partner in the firm of Maylard & Company, farm mortgage bankers at Norfolk, Nebraska. A Republican, he has served for 24 years in public office.

He is a member of the Nebraska State Bar Association; the Red Cross; and the Nebraskana Society. He is a member of the Sons of Veterans; the Masonic Blue Lodge, York Rite, Scottish Rite, Shrine; Modern Woodmen of America; and the Royal Highlanders. He is affiliated with the First Congregational Church of Norfolk, Nebraska.

His marriage to Jane Bawden was solemnized near Apple River, Illinois, September 1, 1896. Mrs. Seymour, who was born near Galena, Illinois, November 1, 1869, received her A. B. degree from the University of Nebraska.

Her ancestors were Cornish miners. Her father mined in California, Australia, Montana, Minnesota, and owned a lead furnace in Illinois. Four children were born to this marriage, two of whom are living: Ellanor Victoria, born August 16, 1897, who married Philip Gordon Jones, and who now resides in Buffalo, New York; Jane Bawden, born February 20, 1899, who died March 28, 1899; Richard Henry, born February 9, 1900, who died March 14, 1900; and Victor Reynolds, born July 24, 1908. Anna Dorothea Shadbolt

Anna Dorothea Shadbolt, clubwoman, was born at Davenport, Iowa, August 23, 1881, daughter of Peter and Anna Christian Maria (Rubien) Thomsen. Her father was born at Schleswig, Germany, December 6, 1850, and died in Scott County, Iowa, March 1, 1882. He was a farmer. Her mother was born in Jafenstedt, Holstein, Germany, December 2, 1854, daughter of Johanass and Anna John Rubien.

Mrs. Shadbolt attended country school, and on December 14, 1904, was married to George Everitt Shadbolt at Rushville, Nebraska. Mr. Shadbolt was born at Cascade, Wisconsin, October 8, 1858, and died at Gordon, March 16, 1923: At the time of his death Mr. Shadbolt was part owner of the Churn Ranch in Cherry County. He was the son of Seaman and Martha Parrish Shadbolt.

Mr, and Mrs. Shadbolt have three children, Viola, born September 25, 1905, a graduate of the University of Nebraska, a member of Delta Zeta Sorority, and now a teacher in the Chadron High School. She was awarded a scholarship at the Colonial School for Girls at Washington, D. C. During her senior year at the University of Nebraska she served as president of her sorority. In 1928 she was delegate to the Delta Zeta convention which convened in Canada. Ella, the second daughter, was born February 18, 1908, and is married to Charles Loewenthal of Chadron. She was a graduate of Gordon High School and had three years dramatic work in Chadron Normal. Mrs. Loewenthal received the Stephens award for debating in 1930. She was a member of the winning Chadron Normal School debating team which debated against the University of Wyoming in 1929.

George, the only son, was born February 20, 1911, and is attending the University of Nebraska. He is a stockholder in the Shadholt-Arnot Cattle Company. Now in his sophomore year at the University, he is a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity. He was awarded a scholarship to the Hastings Business College in 1929. He was also awarded the Kiwanis scholarship the same year.

Mrs. Shadbolt is a director of the Anchor Bank at Merriman, Nebraska, and president and director of the Shadbolt-Arnot Cattle Company. She is a Republican, a member of the Presbyterian Church, was president of the Gordon's Women's Club, 1923-1924, and is a member and secretary of the cemetery board. At one time she was a member of the Parent-Teachers' Association, and was a member of the library board for nine years. Residence: Gordon. (Photograph in Album).


Charles E. Shafer

Charles E. Shafer, pioneer farmer in Burt County, Nebraska, has lived in this state for 64 years. He was born at Tekamah, July 6, 1867, the son of Michael and Julia Ann (Lydick) Shafer. His father, a farmer and a Civil War veteran, was born at Mount Vernon, Ohio, March 21, 1832, and died at Tekamah, July 22, 1907. His mother was a teacher in the public schools for several years and took an active interest in church work; she was born at Mount Vernon, October 2, 1830, and died at Tekamah, November 9, 1906.

Mr. Shafer, who has lived on his father's homestead practically all his life, is a member of the Pioneers and Old Settlers Association of Burt County. He was treasurer of school his local district No. 18, 1904 to 1914, acted as chairman of the loan drives in that district during the World War, and took part in Red Cross affairs. He holds membership in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Modern Woodmen of America. He is a Democrat.

He was united in marriage March 4, 1896, at Tekamah, with Evalyn Sisson who was born at Tekamah, August 17, 1877. One son was born to this marriage: Roland Lee, born April 29, 1898, who married Ethel E. Coons. She was born June 4, 1900. Residence: Tekamah.


Dean E. Shaffer

Born at St. Edward, Nebraska, July 17, 1903, Dean E. Shaffer is the son of Charles Johnston and Angie Chamberlain (Finch) Shaffer. His father is of Pennsylvania Dutch extraction, and is engaged as a dairy farmer. He is an elder and trustee of the Presbyterian Church, and has been a township and school officer. His wife was born of English parents, and was formerly president of her local Parent-Teacher's Association.

Mr. Shaffer was graduated from high school at St. Edward, and after receiving his A. B. degree from Hastings College in 1925, took graduate work at the Univers-

ity of California. While in Hastings he became a member of Pi Kappa Delta and Pi Gamma Mu, and in high school received letters in basketball 1919, 1920 and 1921. He was editor of the Maroon (high school paper) in 1921, and acting editor of the Daily Californian the summer of 1925.

From 1925 until 1927 Mr. Shaffer was instructor at Hastings College. During 1927 he was manager of Radio Station KFKX for the National Broadcasting Company, and since that time he has been manager of the insurance department of the Mortgage Investment Company of Hastings. A Republican, he is a participant in the work of his party locally, and during the years 1928-30 was secretary of the Adams County Republican Central committee. He received the U. S. Junior Chamber of Commerce civic award for Hastings in 1931.

A member of the Young Men's Christian Association, he is one of its directors, and head sponsor of the Hastings High School Hi-Y Club. He served as secretary in 1929 and president in 1930 of the Hastings Junior Chamber of Commerce, and is now a member of the Senior Chamber. His favorite sport is golf, altho he is also interested in all college and high school sports, while his hobby is boys work. During the years 1930 and 1931 he served as secretary of the Rotary Club. He is a Scottish Rite Mason and Member of the Shrine, a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hastings and a life member of the Nebraskana Society. Residence. Hastings.


Norman Edward Shaffer

Born at Hooper, Nebraska, March 21, 1884, Norman Edward Shaffer is the son of Jacob G. and Elizabeth Mary (Winey) Shaffcr. His father was born in Juniata County, Pennsylvania, October 18, 1848, and is now retired after an active life as a farmer and stock feeder. His mother was born at Richfield, Pennsylvania, August 8, 1856, and is still living.

Mr. Shaffer attended the public schools and Fremont Normal College, and from 1907-09 was bookkeeper for the Farmers Elevator. From 1909 to 1918, he engaged in farming, and since the last date has been cashier of the First National Bank of Hooper. He is a director of the Hooper Telephone Company, the Hooper Building and Loan Association, and the Community Finance Corporation.

A Democrat, Mr. Shaffer served as state representative in 1917. He was a participant in loan drives and local war activities in 1917-1918, and is a member of the board of education at Hooper. His religious affiliation is with Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, and he is a Scottish Rite Mason. Mr. Shaffer is a life member of the Nebraskana Society also.

On February 23, 1909, he was married to Nettie Mary Monnich. Mrs. Shaffer was born at Hooper, March 20, 1889, and to them were born three children: Donald, Charlotte and Cornelius. Donald attended the University of Nebraska, and Midland College; Charlotte is taking a nurse's training course at the Methodist Hospital in Omaha, and Cornelius is in high school. Residence: Hooper.


Michael Shaheen

Michael Shaheen, merchant, was born near Beyrouth, Syria, September 19, 1877, son of Joseph and Helen (Lamone) Shaheen. The father and mother were both born near Beyrouth, Syria where the father was a farmer. He died there in 1922. His mother died there in 1882.

Mr. Shaheen received his education in the elementary schools of Syria, came to the United States landing in New York in the late spring of 1895, and for the past 30 years has been a resident of Nebraska. He has been a merchant continuously since 1902.

On April 8, 1908, he was married to Mable David in Syria, where she was born August 25, 1887. They have ten children, all of whom were born in the United States except Toy J. Shaheen who was born in Syria. Toy James, born May 27, 1909; Gladys Anne, born March 7, 1911; Madelia, August 6, 1912; Marguerite Mary, March 21, 1914; Julia, December 25, 1915; Martha, February 22, 1918; Eve, March 14, 1920; Helen, November 9, 1923; George, May 17, 1924; and Kenneth Duane, born August 28, 1930. Madelia Julia is married to Charles Stevens who is a mechanic and merchant residing at Hardesty Oklahoma.

Mr. Shaheen is a member of the Greek Orthodox Church, the Red Cross and the Odd Fellows. He devotes much of his leisure time to reading. Residence: Arthur.


Ashton C. Shallenberger

Ashton C. Shallenberger, congressman and farmer, was born at Toulon, Illinois, December 23, 1862. His father, Martin Shallenberger, born in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, February 23, 1825, was a lawyer and member of the legislature of 1856, descended from a Swiss-German family which came to Pennsylvania in 1830. He died at Toulon, in 1904. His mother, Eliza Hall, was born in Derbyshire, England, in June, 1830, and died at Toulon in 1900. She came to Stark County, Illinois, in 1836, with her father, Dr. Thomas Hall. The mother of six sons and two daughters, she was the author of Stark County and Its Pioneers.

Educated in the common schools of Toulon, Ashtoa C. Shallenberger attended the University of Illinois, and left the latter to come to Nebraska in 1881. The organizer of the Bank of Alma, he was its manager twenty-three years, and when elected governor of Nebraska in 1908, disposed of his interests in the bank. Since that time his only interests except those of a political nature, have been stockraising and farming.

A Democrat, Mr. Shallenberger was elected to the 57th congress in 1900, was candidate for governor on that ticket in 1906, was elected governor in 1908, and was candidate for the United States senate against Norris in 1912. He was elected to congress in 1914, 1916, 1922, 1924, and 1926, and was re-elected to the 72nd congress in 1930 from the Fifth Congressional District of Nebraska.

On May 24, 1885, he was married to Eliza Zilg at Osceola, Nebraska. Mrs. Shallenberger was born in Sauk County, Wisconsin, of German descent. They have three children, Martin Conrad, a major, general staff of the United States Army; Grace Pauline and Dorothy Elizabeth. Residence: Alma.


John Dee Shank

John Dee Shank, farmer and breeder of purebred livestock, was born at Osceola, Nebraska, February 1, 1889, the son of John Wesley and Emma Sophia (Rose) Shank. His father, who is also a farmer and stockman, was born at Agency City, Iowa, September 9, 1861; his parents were natives of Pennsylvania. His mother, whose parents came to Illinois from Sweden, was born at Swedona, Illinois, December 29, 1865.

Mr. Shank was graduated from the high school at Superior, Nebraska, in 1908, and for the following two years was a student at the University of Nebraska. He is a member of the Nebraskana Society, is affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church of Superior, and holds membership in the University Club. A Mason, he is past master and past commander Knights Templar.

He was married at Superior, December 6, 1911, to Grace Gossard, who was born at Omaha, Nebraska, November 18, 1892. She is the daughter of Charles H. and Effie (Hart) Gossard, direct descendants of John Hart, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. They have a son, Boyd, born November 5, 1914, who is a student at the University of Nebraska College of Agriculture. Mr. Shank is a Republican. Residence: Superior.

Charles Augustus Shannon

On August 19, 1879, Charles A. Shannon was born at Nebraska City, the son of Richard Thomas and Samuella Shannon. His father was born in Indiana and died at Cripple Creek, Colorado, in 1896; his ancestry was Irish. His grandfather was a spy in the American Revolution. He received a land grant from the government of Indiana. His mother was born in Missouri and died at Nebraska City, August 13, 1920. She came to Nebraska City in 1855 and her ancestry was Pennsylvania Dutch and English.

Charles A. Shannon was graduated from high school in 1897; from 1904 to 1908 he attended the University of Nebraska, receiving the degree of Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering.

Since 1908 he has held the office of county surveyor of Otoe County, and has been city engineer of Nebraska City during the same period. Mr. Shannon is a Democrat, an Elk and a member of the Masonic lodge. His hobby is farming. Residence: Nebraska City.


Clara Amanda Sharp

Clara A. Sharp, who has lived in Nebraska for the past 67 years, was born near Maquaketa, Iowa, October 5, 1850, the daughter of Leonard and Mary (Dupray) Webb. Her father, a, farmer, was born in New York, February 13, 1823, and died at West Point, Nebraska, June 26, 1882. Her mother was born at Dayton, Ohio, December 4, 1829, and died at Fort Morgan, Colorado, May 17, 1910. Mrs. Sharp is prominent in social and civic affairs at Pilger, and holds membership in the Women's Federated Club, and the Nebraskana Society. She is affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church, and for many years has been active in the Ladies' Aid Society of the church. She is a Democrat.

Her marriage to Henry Clay Sharp was solemnized at West Point, October 20, 1867. Mr. Sharp, who was a farmer, was born in Bedford, Virginia, June 29, 1839, and died at Mountain Grove, Missouri, December 20, 1893.

Nine children were born to this marriage, eight of whom are living: Bertha May, born October 25, 1868, who married Ezra Bennett; Thomas Allen, born July 21, 1872, who married Daisy Ellen Bolton; Eugene Clay, born August 28, 1874, who married Lola Cunningham; Henry Edward, born September 16, 1876, who married Bessie Baker; Roy Leonard, born May 15, 1878, who married Martha Headman; Claude Delbert, born August 2, 1882, who married Nell Russell; Mae Lee, born May 17, 1887, who married O. H. Cunningham; and Clara Belle, born August 28, 1893, who married Alva Wilson. Residence: Pilger.


Orson Jacob Sharp

Born at Eagle, Nebraska, August 3, 1894, Orson Jacob Sharp is the son of William and Pollie Sofia (Bahr) Sharp. His father, who was born at New York, September 1, 1856, is a retired farmer and grain dealer who lives at Trenton. His mother, who taught school for several years before her marriage, was born at Evans Mills, New York, May 2, 1864; she attended the University of Nebraska in 1883 and was an active Methodist Episcopal Church worker. Her grandfather served in the battle of Waterloo under Napoleon, and her maternal grandfather was a soldier in the War of 1812. His father, Henry L. Timmerman, was a soldier in Washington's Army.

Mr. Sharp was graduated from the Elmwood High School, Elmwood, Nebraska, in 1912. He taught school in Nebraska for six years, was connected with the Continental National Life Insurance Company of Denver for a time, and was district manager for Southwest Nebraska for the same company. He is engaged in farming at this time near Trenton. At one time Mr. Sharp was a member of the Republican central committee of Hitchcock County, but he has never aspired to public office.

He is chairman of the County Soldiers Relief Commission, is a member of the Red Cross, holds membership in the Southwest Nebraska Historical Society, and was formerly secretary of the local board of education, 1923-26. He is interested in reading, music, and art. During the World War Mr. Sharp served as corporal in Company C, 342nd Machine Gun Battalion, 89th Division of the United States Army, participating in the St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne offensives. He is a member of the American Legion, acting as vice commander of the 9th Nebraska District, was the first county commander of Hitchcock County, 1927-28, and first commander of Post 337 of the American Legion at Trenton.

His marriage to Ruth Langley Bratt was solemnized at Trenton, Nebraska, June 1, 1921. Mrs. Sharp, whose ancestors were natives of England, was born at Natrona, Illinois, April 17, 1898. She has taken an active interest in the American Legion Auxiliary, having held the following positions: secretary of the local unit, one year; president of the unit, three years; ex-county president; and district president at this time. They have one son: Warren Edward, July 14, 1922. Residence: Trenton.


Francis Thomas Shaughnessy

Born at Hartsgrove, Ohio, October 6, 1870, Francis Thomas Shaughnessy, Sr., is the son of Thomas and Ellen (Murphy) Shaughnessy. His father, born in County Tipperary, Ireland, December 14, 1842, came to America in 1848. He assisted in the building of the Union Pacific from Omaha to Promontory Point with General Casement. He was a farmer for a number of years prior to his death at Hartsgrove on October 11, 1918. Ellen Murphy was born in New York City, June 11, 1848, and died at Hartsgrove on April 19, 1924. She was of Irish descent.

Francis Thomas Shaughnessy attended public school at Hartsgrove until 1884. From 1888-97 he engaged in the lumber business, and from 1900-06 was a salesman. He was appointed clerk of the district court of Howard County in February, 1906, serving until January 8, 1910. From that time until the present he has been associated with the Citizens National Bank at St. Paul, of which he is now cashier. He is a Democrat.

On September 24, 1900, Mr. Shaughnessy was married to Anna Carraher at Wahoo. Mrs. Shaughnessy, who is of Irish descent, was born at Hartsgrove, June 14, 1866. There are five children, as follows:

Paul, born September 29, 1901, received his A. B., A. M., and M. D. degrees from Creighton University and is practicing in Cleveland, Ohio. He is married to Mary Martha Clark. Winifred, born March 22, 1905, has a Bachelor of Arts degree and is supervisor of music at St. Paul. Francis Thomas, Jr., born April 2, 1907, has his B. A. degree and is studying for the priesthood; Edwin John, born December 20, 1909, is studying medicine; while Cyril Patrick, born February 9, 1913, is studying law.

Mr. Shanghnessy is a member of SS. Peter and Paul Church, and is a Knight of Columbus (financial secretary 1918-). From 1907-13 he was a member of the city council, and since 1923 he has been secretary of the board of education. He is a member of the Red Cross and The Nebraskana Society. He enjoys golf, is a member of the St. Paul Golf Club, and is fond of reading. Residence: St. Paul.


Claude E. Shaw

Claude E. Shaw, son of Eugene Terry and Catherine (Fryer) Shaw, was born at Blue Mound, Illinois, September 8, 1879. His father, a railroad telegrapher and

agent, was born at Cincinnati, Ohio, in May 1850, of Scotch and Irish parentage. He died at Poteau, Oklahoma, in October, 1915. Catherine, his wife, was a native of Bowling Green, Missouri, born July 27, 1853, and is still living.

Educated in public school, Claude E. Shaw came to Nebraska in 1900, and has resided here since. On May 9th of that year he was united in marriage to Ella Guthrie, at Superior. Mrs. Shaw, who is of Scotch descent, was born at Superior, May 27, 1881.

Mr. Shaw is a Democrat. At the present time he represents the Travelers Insurance Company, at Superior. He is a Mason and Kiwanian, a member of the Chamber of Commerce, and a member of Superior Country Club. His favorite sport is golf. Residence: Superior.


Guy S. Shaw

Guy S. Shaw, prominent farmer of Cheyenne County, was born in York, Nebraska, March 28, 1880, son of John and Hester (Dcnney) Shaw. His father, born in Ohio, April 24, 1854, was a farmer until his death at York, August 15, 1927. Hhis (sic) wife, Hester, died at York, in June, 1884.

Mr. Shaw attended public school and since that time has engaged in farming. He is a member of the Sidney Methodist Episcopal Church and the Kidney school board.

On February 21, 1906, he was married to Maud L. Huffman at York. Mrs. Shaw was born at LaFayette, Indiana, February 13, 1883. There are two children, Ruth E., born January 5, 1907, who married Walter S. Cork; and Ester J., born October 25, 1909. Both children are teachers. Residence: Sidney.


Lawrence Madison Shaw

A resident of Nebraska for the past 52 years, Lawrence M. Shaw has been engaged in the practice of medicine at Osceola, Nebraska, since 1889. He was born at Powershiek, Iowa, February 4, 1868, the son of Lanson and Mary Elizabeth (Valentine) Shaw. His father, who was a contractor and builder, was born at Berlin, Illinois, September 22, 1840, and died at Osceola, Nebraska, November 2, 1920. His mother was born at Degraff, Ohio, October 25, 1848, and died at Osceola. February 20, 1930. She is a member of the English family of Crane, and is descended from Lionel Gardner who came to Hemstead, Long Island, in 1657.

Dr. Shaw attended the grade school at Osceola, and in 1884 was graduated from the high school there. He attended Nebraska Wesleyan University, later, and in 1888 received the M. D. degree at the University of Iowa. He has been prominent in the medical world since his admission to practice at Osceola, and has held the following positions: president of the Nebraska State Medical Society, 1908-09; chairman of the board of counsellors of that organization; vice president of the society, 1908. In 1906-be assisted in the re-organization of the state association.

His marriage to Etta Moffett was solemnized at Osceola, January 15, 1890. Mrs. Moffett, whose ancestry is English, was born at Falmouth, Indiana, August 24, 1866. Their four children are: Marion A., who is a regent of the state university; Lawrence, who is assistant United States district attorney at Omaha, Nebraska; Leale, who is a teacher and aviatrix at Long Beach, California; and Irma. Marion is married to Laura J. Pratt; Lawrence married Emma J. Ritchie; Leah married William R. Shirey; and Irma married Elzie E. Calvin.

Dr. Shaw is affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church of Osceola, and takes an active part in the Young Men's Christian Association. He holds membership in the Red Cross, the Nebraska Medical Society, the American Medical Society, and the Masons. During the World War he was a member of the local board of examiners.

His favorite sport is golfing, while floral culture and reading are his hobbies. Residence: Osceola. (Photograph in Album).


Marion Ansley Shaw

A leading lawyer in Butler County, Marion Ansley Shaw, was born at Osceola, Nebraska, April 2, 1893. He is the son of Lawrence Madison and Etta (Moffett) Shaw. His father was born at Poweshiek, Iowa, February 4, 1868, and is a physician and a former president of the State Medical Association. His ancestors came to the United States before the American Revolution, and some of them fought with the American forces.

His mother was born at Falmouth, Indiana, August 24, 1867. She is active in Woman's Club, P. E. O., Daughters of the American Revolution, and in all local school affairs. Her ancestors were English and came to America prior to the Revolutionary war and fought in Washington's army.

Marion Ansley Shaw attended Osceola, Nebraska, grade and high schools and was graduated in 1911. At the University of Nebraska in 1917, he received a Bachelor of Laws degree. He was a Theta Nu Epsilon, president of Sigma Alpha Epsilon in 1917, and received an "N" for baseball while attending school.

On April 3, 1918, at Evanston, Illinois, he was united in marriage with Laura Josephine Pratt. She taught in kindergarten before her marriage. She was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, February 14, 1893, of Irish descent; her parents were born and reared in Ireland. They have three children; Jane, born February 11, 1919; Susan, born March 19, 1922; and Patricia, born November 16, 1925.

Mr. Shaw was appointed city attorney at David City, Nebraska, for 1930-31, and acted as Polk County judge in 1915. He is a member of the board of regents of the University of Nebraska, and chairman of the finance committee, and from 1919-23, he was a member of the legal firm of Roper and Shaw. Since that time he has been a member of the firm of Coufal and Shaw.

During the World War he was in the First Officers Training Camp, at Fort Snelling, and four months after he was commissioned second lieutenant he was promoted to first lieutenant. He served in battery A 339th Field Artillery and was in France, from August, 1918, until January, 1919. He is a former member of the state executive committee of the American Legion, is a past post commander, and now service officer of Kregger Post No. 125.

Mr. Shaw is affiliated with the St. Luke's Methodist Church, and holds membership in the David City Commercial Club, of which he was president in 1929, and a member of the executive committee in 1927-28. He is a member of the Nebraska State Bar Association, the Masonic Blue Lodge at David City, the Scottish Rite at Lincoln, and is a Knight of Pythias.

He is a member of the Nebraskana Society, the Lincoln University Club, and holds membership in the David City Country Club. Golf, fishing and hunting are his sports. Residence: David City.


Relvia Ulysses Shaw

Relvia Ulysses Shaw, merchant now retired, was born at Redding, Iowa, November 7, 1863, son of Samuel Reed and Sarah (Phelps) Shaw. He settled at Cambridge three years before the railroad entered that section of the country.

Samuel Reed Shaw, a farmer and mason, was born at Bridgetown, New Jersey, February 26, 1814, and died at Cambridge, Nebraska, July 13, 1891. He owned a flour mill and a woolen mill at Clarinda, Iowa, and the family did their own weaving. His father came from England and settled on a homestead in Bridgetown, New Jersey.
