His father was born November 17, 1828, in Pennsylvania, and his mother was born October 20, 1828, in Pennsylvania. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Reece died at Ashland, Nebraska. They were the parents of six sons and two daughters.

John A. Reece spent his boyhood in Pennsylvania, coming west to Malvern, Iowa, when he was about nineteen years old. That was the time of the gold rush activities in the Black Hills, so John joined a group of men bound for the mines. He spent two or three years in that region, during the hectic frontier era, when lawlessness was rampant and the six-gun was the frequent arbiter of men's differences.

Mr. Reece, a quiet and friendly man with high ideals, found the conditions there at that time so distasteful that he returned to Iowa and turned to farming. Later on, he moved to a farm in Cass County, near Greenwood, Nebraska. While living in this section of the state, he married Alfa C. Laughlin, at Plattsmouth, Nebraska, on August 5, 1885. Alfa C. The Wooden Sole Shoe Factory had been operated in Columbus from 1885, but was still a small concern when Mr. Reece took it over in 1912.

He acquired new quarters for it, increased the equipment, perfected several new lines of shoes, on some of which he secured original patents, and built the business to a point where it became one of the outstanding manufacturing enterprises of the state; in fact, the only factory of its kind in this section of the country. He enlarged his trade territory gradually until now the Reece Wooden Sole products are sold in every state in the Union and exported to Canada and Europe, the widespread sale attesting their superior quality.

His daughter, Genevieve, who was associated with him in the operation and management of his manu-
