The Freshmen
SINCE
the installation of the one-year residence rule,
the Freshmen team has taken the place of the scrub
team in giving the Varsity its workouts. The
Varsity team of 1911 was a great team, and no small
amount of their prowess was due to the fact that
they constantly lined up against the husky lads of
the first-year class.
The Freshmen of the scrub team
are always the men who do most for the Varsity.
When a team "bucks" as big a team every night
during the entire season as the Varsity, they
certainly do nearly as much for their Alma Mater as
the "N" men, but they must content themselves with
a dirty jersey from the manager and hard knocks
from the first team, in place of good care and
glory. However, the Freshmen have their time
coming. Of the championship team of 1911, every
member had played at least one year on the Freshman
or scrub team, and four or five had played two
years. The same has been true for several years.
Members of the Freshmen team make up the Varsity of
the years to come, and the Freshmen who worked so
hard last fall have a very good opportunity to make
good in the future.
From the Freshmen team of the
past year it is a hard matter to state just who
have the best chances of making the Varsity. They
all played good ball and were faithful in practice.
Mastin and Hawkins at the ends, Allan at center,
the Fauts brothers as guards and Obbie Myers at
tackle, will all make strong bids for the line
positions. In the back field Howard, Halligan, Beck
and Dalametre will all be strong contenders for
regular places. Howard and Halligan are especially
good punters and this faculty, together with their
playing ability, will make them very strong
candidates. There are a great many others who
deserve mention for faithful work last season, but
there is not sufficient space.
