THE QUEST OF KNOWLEDGE

Tell me, what lies over the hill?
A hundred fields of waving corn,
Bathed in the dew of a summer morn.
   Yellow cornfields over the hill.

But tell me, what lies beyond the corn?
A mighty river, deep and wide,
Flowing down to the ocean side.
A mighty river beyond the corn.

Beyond the river, what find I then?
   Cornfields, then mountains worn and old;
   Towered cities and wealth untold,
Beyond the river the spoils of men.

Good stranger, beyond the mountains, pray:
The ocean deep, strange waters dark,
That would dash asunder thy fragile bark--
Mayst always remain among the corn!

I fear not; beyond the waters deep?
   A hundred children, asking still:
"Tell me, what lies over the hill?"
Yea, Children the whole world o'er.

SpacerTHE FAIR CO-ED
SpacerHow very learnedly she talks!
And writes!--a modern Sappho,
And all her Thoughts on Woman's Sphere,
Would surely make you laugh-o.
She says that she will never wed,
That wedded life is narrow,
But woe. Ere seven months have sped
She's slain by Cupid's arrow.
And next we view this fair Co-ed,
Her husband's house adorning,
At half-past six she crawls from bed,
To fry waffles every morning.

SpacerDAD'S CHECK
They talk about the slowness of turtle and the snail,
Of students and of debtors, and of ships that used to sail,
Of Englishmen who never see the point of any joke,
Of Congressmen and Gratitude, and other things that "poke,"
But the slowest thing a-going was surely going some
When you think of how you've waited
   For ........... your ......... check ......... to ......... come.
You hear and read about the speed of modern aeroplanes,
Of light and heat, the U. S. mail, the steamships and the trains,
Of lightning, wit, of bullets, and the auto's rush and roar,
Of Roosevelt and Engberg, and things that run or soar.
But the thing that really does go, is really going some
It's my cash when I have wanted

Our most strenuous efforts were spent in securing a man who came up from Lincoln, and we are glad to report that, owing to our superior powers of conversation, our house, an alumnus' automobile. and the name of the fraternity as of such high national standing, we can present to the fraternity at large the name of Ed Field. who has joined the glorious standard of Phi Psi.
(One more.)
   * * * We have just finished one of the most strenuous rushing seasons in the history of Lambda Phi chapter. One man especially was rushed by every fraternity in school and yet good old S. A. E. finally got him. as they do all good men. This is Ed Field of Lincoln, and it is with great pleasure indeed that we announce his acceptance of our fraternity.
(And yet another.)
    * * * We have just finished the most successful rushing season in the history of Lambda Nu chapter of Phi Gamma Delta, and we take pleasure in presenting to the fraternity at large the name of Ed Field of Lincoln and several other men from various parts of the country.
(Only one more.) From Beta Theta Pi.
   * * * Our rushing season was conducted on a strictly original plan this year. We worked hard all summer on Ed Field and several other promising men, and by the time school opened had at least a dozen well lined up. * * * By the time pledge day arrived we had pledged sub rosa every important man, among them Ed Field of Lincoln.
(There were others, see Ed Field's scrap book.)
From "The Arrow" of Pi Beta Phi, Nebraska University:
Dear Sisters in the Bonds -- This year has been one of the most successful in the glorious annals of our superlative sisterhood. Everything has just gone along too perfectly great for anything, and all our dearest sisters have striven with the greatest eagerness and most unfailing earnestness to make an extremely sensational impression both upon the professiors and the fraternities. And we have succeeded, too! (Though it was awful mean of the horrid boys not to call as soon as the Formal invitations had been sent.)
We came back last fall with several girls. a bunch of D. Us., and the ever faithful of the Phi Gams, and immediately started rushing. And let me tell you that when, on pledge day, nine of the most beautiful, accomplished, popular, and otherwise perfectly lovely girls in the Uni came walking up to our porch. we just jumped right up and down and screamed. and we didn't care how many pictures the horrid boys (but they are lovely most of the time) who stood on the opposite corner, got of us. We hope to be

even more successful next year, for the girls have practiced all year in talking "hot air." and one of the Freshmen, Charlotte Allen, is acknowledged to be an artist along this line.

Yours in the sweet bonds that shall eternally hold together our most dear and beloved sisterhood.

From "The Kappa Alpha Theta Journal," Nebraska University:
Beloved of K. A. T. -- At last we have reached the pinnacle of perfection long desired by us, but until now always denied because of some of the cheaper sororities. We are now THE exclusive sorority. We admit it. Why, dear sisters, there wasn't enough really good sorority material in school this year, and so we only took the two girls who were eligible to enter our mystic fold.
And another proof of our exclusiveness is this: almost every one of the girls has a MAN of her very own, and is actually wearing his pin (triumph of triumphs) and those two or three who haven't got that far yet will have by the time you read this. At least they say they will. Just ask "Baby" Anderson.

We have spent a great deal of time on chapter affairs this year, and some of the girls are almost perfect. The other day some horrid man called up from the CORNHUSKER office and asked for the name of the journal, and one of the girls almost got it right without asking any one, or looking it up at all.
SpacerExclusively yours,
SpacerRUTH LINDLEY.

From "The Key." Kappa Kappa Gamma. -- Nebraska University:
Dear "Sis" of the sign of the Keyhole -- Say, maybe you think we didn't come "back with the goods" this season. Believe me, we were "there and over" and "then some." Everybody "pulled the con game good and strong;" the "classy rags;" and dragged the children about until we got 'em "on the hook," and then we sewed the little brass button on 'em where it wouldn't come off and would show up "swell." Cert. Surest thing you know. We "sure" were the "real thing when it came to rushing. even if we did only take in a few of the fair handmaidens.
And say, little one, "take it from me," there's no use talking when it comes to the "swell fixing." This bunch certainly can "put it over anything" in this little "burg" when it comes to the "fancy frou-frous." What? You don't get me? Well say, Mame. "wake up and hear the birdies sing." I mean skirts, hobbles, et cetera, CLOTHES,
