Daily Nebraskan

LetterHE Nebraskan was established as a private enterprise, in October, 1892, by a few students of the University. It was a two-column, monthly magazine of from twelve to sixteen pages. The first page of the paper was entirely given up to the staff personnel and editorials. The humorous section was called "Sand Burrs."

In its second year the Nebraskan became a semi-monthly publication. Then after two issues under such an arrangement, it was changed to a four-column, four-page, weekly paper, issued every Friday noon. Then in 1894 the paper was enlarged to five columns, and the price of the paper was made seventy-five cents a year. In the year 1895-96 the nickname "Rag" came to the Nebraskan, from one of its editors, "Rag" Riley. This name has remained with the Nebraskan ever since.

The Daily Nebraskan was begun on September 18, 1901. In 1916 the paper was made six columns, the arrangement lasting until 1924 when the publication was enlarged to a seven-column paper.

The staff is elected each year by the Student Publication Board, composed of faculty and student members. The Nebraskan has become a laboratory for School of Journalism students, each member being required to do a certain amount of work reporting and editing as practice and experience. The past year has been one of the most successful in the history of the publication and the future has much in store for the paper.
